Background: The X-307 is not so much intended to go into production but act as a technology demonstrator and flying testbed. The idea is that technologies that are to be introduced can be tested on the X-307 before they are approved, but this has resulted in an exceptionally overdesigned fighter as a result. The X-307 uses a semi-delta wing design with forward canards, canted vertical stabilizers, and Two Dimensional Converging-Diverging (2DCD) thrust vectoring. The cockpit is all digital and uses helmet-mounted HUD displays. While the X-307 has exceptional maneuverability in atmospheric conditions, it is also very inherently unstable, requiring an experienced pilot to keep it in check.

Currently, there are three systems that the X-307 is testing for possible future deployment. The first is a prototype fighter-carried heavy railgun. One general concept to address the limitations of fighter weapons is to mount high powered railguns on them to limit the need for anything more than what is in the current inventory. The current type on the X-307 is a 40mm bore railgun firing a new type of shell, a combination of a Sabot penetrator and the High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) tank round. The idea is that by having the majority of the projectile flatten on impact and force an armor piercing penetrator through a small surface, the kinetic force is most transferred into the impact, and the penetrator further compromises structural integrity by punching through.

The next is what is being called “Omni-Directional Multipurpose Missile”, which currently uses three pods to fire swarms of small missiles that are self-guided and can track air and land targets. The idea is to address complaints from pilots of being hamstrung by the limitations of the weapons available to them without having to convert any more weapons, as well as to give Earth forces an edge against enemies who favor quantity over quality. The ODMM is already being nicknamed the “Iron Man Missile”, in reference to the qualities mimicking technologies used by the comic book hero. The current drawback is that these missiles, though they can track a large number of targets, are quite small and do limited damage, even with naquadah explosive enhancements. They have given rise to the possibility of a larger system in order to overwhelm point defense systems, however.

The final system is rather peculiar. Dubbed COFFIN (Connection For Flight Interface), the idea is to eliminate the need for a transparent canopy and place the pilot in an enclosed space with realtime feeds in 360 degree projections. There are possibilities of going further, such as neural interfaces and even allowing a pilot to remotely operate their craft in realtime in a separate location, but for now, COFFIN is focusing on a reliable means of putting a pilot into an armored cockpit. This has proven tricky, since the slightest EM interference ruins the projection systems, but there is promise in the design. The argument for COFFIN is that it reduces the possibility of losing experienced pilots but can function on a greater capability than just normal unmanned drones. There is also the possibility that it could allow for a greater understanding for the Ancient control chair systems, which if it is successful, pairing COFFIN with ODMM could result in creating an Earth-created version of the Ancient Drone weapon system.

In order to still test the actual aircraft as a potential advanced model for future production, it still can use conventional weapons, with two missile hardpoints on the wing, and the internal weapons compartments for the heavy railgun and ODMM launchers can be repurposed to carry conventional weapons as well. Gun mounts are present in the wingroots for normal railguns or energy weapons as needed. There was a proposal to integrate the ECM system from the F-306, but the power constraints were never really worked out in the first place, and the X-307 was decided to not need that strain on it. Additionally, most of the same avionics and sensors are used in the F-306, as there was no need seen in introducing a whole new suite of electronics into what would likely either be a limited test run or would end up seeing updates if it ever went into production.
