Ace Combat - Infinite Horizons (Story)
« on: August 21, 2017, 05:25:09 AM »

<602nd Airbase, Shymkent, Kazakhstan>
May 1, 2019 - 0715 Hours Local

One of the briefing rooms at the Kazakh Air Force base was set aside for the mercenary teams sent by Daemon-Knight Strategic Solutions, Galm and Crow. At the head of the room was an older man, in his mid-50s with no hair on the top of his head and a black mustache, wearing a blue flight suit. He had an easy and welcoming smile, but everyone in Demon Knight (as they were often nicknamed) respected the man. They called him "Pops", owing to his fatherly attitude when training new arrivals, but his real name was Peter Beagle.

First came in the pilots with Galm Team. They were led by a gruff man, Jack Bartlett. He had black hair that was cropped closely and what seemed to be a perpetual five o'clock shadow. Following him was a younger man with a mess of brown hair, Larry Foulke, and a man with black hair that was kept in military regs, Marcus Lampert. Behind them was a red headed woman, their newest addition, Veronica Zerro.

Pops smiled to each and every one of them as they took their seats, and then to the members of Crow Team before he started the briefing. The lights dimmed and a computer projection was put up against the screen behind him.

Jack looked over at his pilots and grunted.

"Nugget, you're flying with Pixy." Bartlett said. Larry looked over at Veronica and nodded.

"Don't worry. Sounds like this should be a quick and easy payday." Larry said. Veronica nodded in agreement.

"Does anyone have any questions before we get ready to launch?" Pops asked.

He had followed in behind his new team - Crow; Freddie Durand, Monika Stark, Joshua Bristow, who had all followed in behind Galm. Hans was not the most talkative type on the ground as he settled into the briefing room, folding his arms across his chest.

Hans Francis Ƙdegaard was one of the shorter members, a second generation Norwegian whose parents had immigrated over to the UK. Standing at 5'8", with close cropped blonde hair and blue eyes, Hans scanned the briefing several times over, making sure he had his orders clear before his eyes drifted across the other faces in the room.

"Does anyone have any questions before we get ready to launch?"

Deciding this was one of the few opportunities he was going to get, Hans raised his hand, "Who am I flying with?" His Norwegian accent was still lingering, no matter how long he had spent in the UK.

"I suppose that's up to your flight lead." Pops replied.

"I'll head up with you." Crow's Lead, Freddie Durand, said. "I'd like to see you in action personally. Don't sweat it, just fly normally. Like Solo Wing said, this'll be a walk in the park."

Pops nodded and then toggled the screen to the next setting. Cross-training in various fighters was now exceptionally easy, since Werhner and Noah Enterprises were churning aircraft out en-masse thanks to their advanced automated aviation plants. So at least this was now a question to ask.

Veronica paused for a moment, mulling over her choices before deciding.

"I'll go up in the Tiger." She finally said.

Hans gave a curt nod at the fact that their team leader was going to be flying with him. And, like Freddie said, he wanted to see how he flew but it was daunting nonetheless. The mission provided very little room for error in this case - one stray plane and that was that. He breathed gently in and out as he reviewed the next screen.

Once he had heard what Veronica was going to fly, it was his turn. Hans, keeping a level-head, read over the screen and the stats of each one before he made his choice, "I'll fly the Draken."

A single rocket was sitting on the last active launch pad at the Cosmodrome. Space travel was much more risky with the threat of the asteroid fragments still in Earth's orbit. The Stonehenge guns broke up Ulysses up some, but never truly destroyed it. The threat of the Near Earth Objects hung above the planet like some sort of cosmic guillotine waiting to come back down.

"This is Baikonur Control. UNF fighters, we see you on our radar." The accented voice of the ground controller said over the radio.

"Copy that, Control. This is Crow One, representing Daemon-Knight, authorized by the UNF to enforce the no-fly zone for today's launch. What's the sitrep down there, Control?" Freddie asked.

"Mercenaries? One of the most important launches in the last three years and they sent mercenaries?" The ground controller muttered something else in Russian.

"Control, Galm One. Yeah, mercs. We're already here and we're being paid so just can the waterworks and answer the question." Larry replied.

"Very well. Launch preparations are proceeding smoothly. We are currently at T-Minus ten minutes until launch....your drones are getting too close to the launch pad. Please divert them to bearing one-eight-zero." The controller said.

"We didn't bring any drones...wait, I see them on radar. Control, those aren't our drones, is there anyone else operating in this airspace?" Freddie asked.

"Negative, you're supposed to be it. We will attempt to contact them in hopes of getting through to whoever is flying them but you are authorized to shoot them if they do not divert. Drones are at bearing zero-two-zero." The controller replied.

"Copy that. Cipher, take the lead here, I'll go trail. Should be easy enough." Larry said.

"Yeah. Crow Two, take point as well. If they've got any friends, I'll help keep them in line." Freddie said.

"Galm Two, copy." Veronica angled her fighter at the bearing that was indicated.

He listened to the exchange between Freddie and ground control, to which they seemed less than pleased to have a couple of mercs coming to their aid. Some of which he could understand the grumbling, being a rather important event.

Drones?

Hans glanced down at his radar, to which he could see blips.

His brow furrowed as he listened to the back and forth between his team leader and ground control, wondering who was flying the drones.

"Yeah. Crow Two, take point as well. If they've got any friends, I'll help keep them in line."

"Crow Two, copy." Hans replied, angling his plane at the bearing. "Who's drones are they?"

"Who knows? But maybe some stunt by that big terrorist group...Troy something?" Avalanche said.

"Sons of Troia. I wouldn't put it past those lunatics, they'll do just about anything to cause chaos these days." Pixy replied.

Like so many of the rising terrorist groups, the Sons of Troia were made up of those disillusioned refugees displaced and then mistreated in their new homes. And like the mercenaries that popped up all over the world, the ease of access to stocks of discarded weapons, vehicles and aircraft made it possible for these people to actually bring firepower to bear that was impossible 20 years ago.

As the distance closed, all four aircraft began to get alerts from their threat receivers that they were being tracked by weapons.

"Those drones are armed." Cipher said.

"Confirmed. Cipher, you and Crow Two get in there and start mixing it up with them, see if we can get them to get into a dogfight. Avalanche, let's try to thin the herd." Pixy said. Both of the senior mercenaries spread out and began to acquire target locks at medium range with their Sparrow missiles.

"Copy." Cipher replied and ran her F-5's throttles to full, the afterburners engaging as she raced into the formation.

"Avalanche, Fox One."

"Pixy, Fox One."

A pair of Sparrows streaked out ahead of the two junior pilots and after a few seconds, two of the drones were clouds of debris. The rest began to scatter and move to either engage the incoming fighters or try to get past them.

"This is Baikonur Control. Our ground teams are tracking them now. They are advanced drones. Part of the formation are Phantom Rays, the other part are Skat-type drones." The ground controller said, "...be advised, we're getting news that Quox drones are attacking Tokyo."

All of those models were state of the art UCAVs. The Phantom Ray was an American design, born of the aimless and de-funded X-45 project, while the Skat was a Russian MiG-created design, and the MQ-90 Quox was a joint American-Japanese UCAV. All of them were small, agile, and able to carry missiles. They were also fairly stealthy, but with the Cosmodrome's ground radar focused on the Phantom Rays and Skats, they were lit up well enough.

x4 Phantom Ray UCAV - Moving to launch pad (ETA to firing range: 1 minute)
x4 Skat UCAV - Moving to intercept fighters

Hans did not like the sound of it, but judging from the conversation - it was going to hopefully be a smooth flight. But, a cold chill rippled down his spine as he heard that the drones were armed, mouthing 'sh*t' underneath his mask.

"Confirmed. Cipher, you and Crow Two get in there and start mixing it up with them, see if we can get them to get into a dogfight. Avalanche, let's try to thin the herd."

"Copy." Hans replied, increasing speed to catch up to the formation.

To which he watched as two missiles streaked ahead of him, blowing the two targets out of the sky but that was only the start of the battle. "Which two have been downed and how do we want to play this, Cipher?"
