P6A-669: Galina Varvera
« on: January 26, 2015, 09:09:48 PM »

| This planet has a well-used Stargate such that there is a smooth stone path leading from it to a nearby village. The Gate is the primary source of income for the planet, which is a trading planet much like Belkan, though the people here are slightly less wholesome. During the day, travelers are safer, though only the toughest of men venture here after dark. Many in Pegasus refer to Galina Varvera as the Thieves Market.

While there is no longer a cohesive government to speak of, the village is run by a band of mercenaries to whom the whole village is loyal. If you do anything you shouldn't be doing, you will need to answer to them |

<< From M3S-462 >>

Nyreese steps through the portal to a familiar sight of the stone path and run-down village just ahead. Though no one is there to greet them, nor do passersby stop to say hello, she knows they are already being watched. The mob who runs this place has spies everywhere and would know her group by sight and hopefully leave them to their vices. Typically, they were only there for any reason the others would be. But this time was different. She wonders briefly if things might be different since they were not accompanied by Aiden - someone who instilled fear even in the leader of the ruthless gang. She would deal with that if the problem arose, however, and begins to head towards her first destination - a tavern at the south end of the village where she trusted the owner enough to not poison them or sell them out. A continuous supply of a few of her special herbs ensured his loyalty.

<< From M3S-462 >>

Came out of the gate walking backwards, turning around with a hand combing through his hair and wiping off his face.  He never liked going through face first, always so disorienting, better to see the world dissolve like its pulling away rather than lean into it like diving off a cliff into the unknown abyss.

He'd heard enough horror stories of Ancient Ring mishaps to also be aware of post-arrival problems...

Turning his head side to side, seeming casual and cordial as possible, even cocking an elbow toward Nyreese with that rogue's 'Good ol' Boy' smile that did nothing to soften his almost black eyes.

Nyreese gives Keran a slight eyeroll at his antics. The man really is endearing in many ways. But she can't suppress the slight grin. It felt good that he was comfortable enough with her in the lead to behave as he normally would on any other mission. Which sets her at ease a bit more. Behind her, the rest of the team would come through, and they would go their separate ways. Anyone there would just think it was business as usual, each of them moving to their perspective contacts.

"The tavern first, for an update and small delivery," She murmurs to Keran, indicating the satchel she'd brought along. The tavern owner's due fee plus a little extra, in case this should all go south. "Reynos should be there with information about any of Them. Meet with him and I will join you once my business is finished." Keeping her strides steady and head held high, she leads them closer to the tavern.

He listened to her as they walked, though he made a show of a moc pout when she didn't take his arm, moving effortlessly to keep pace with her shorter frame as he walked along, pausing briefly when they passed a fruit vendor to snag a peach, paying with a trade of flint that was easy to come by in the caves, but harder for this place to acquire.

When she spoke of the tavern, he arched a brow, glancing briefly behind them as he took a bite from the fruit and took the time to chew and swallow before answering. "Thought you didn't want me out of your sights?  And I'd never hear the end of it if I let you out of mine.  So where you go, I go."  His nearly black eyes would swing to get her to look at him as he took another seemingly casual bite of fruit, though his deliberate slowness while he stared unblinking at her over it had it's own messages. Again he took the time to chew and swallow before speaking, letting her think about what it meant.

"After you..."

The young boy runs through the small crowd of people bartering in the afternoon heat. These were the two the really nice man had pointed out -- just ahead. He needs to get their attention. He tugs urgently at Nyreese's leg, his little legs pumping furiously to keep up with her longer strides. "Hey, miss. Miss! I gots a message for you."

Nyreese gives a somewhat satisfied grin at Keran's mock pout. But they both knew that her showing any sign of weakness or femininity around here would be very bad. It was still cute of him to offer, though. She'd have to make a point to do something nice for him later. Well, not too nice ..

"We won't be out of each other's sight, Keran. Merely on opposite sides of the room." Beofre she can continue, she's interrupted by a tugging at her leg. Instinct winds up her muscles for a kick until she stops suddenly, hearing the child's voice. No matter how tough and hard her exterior may be, Nyreese can never find it in her heart to push away a child. Even if that child is from this planet. But she knows better than to let her guard down or expose herself to possible theft.

"And what would that be, little man?" She asks politely, without that tone in her voice that most adults reserve for young children. She remembers that tone used with her. Often. She hated it then and still does. Children are just little versions of us. No reason to treat them that differently.

Keran had no such qualms about children, and when the little street urchin spoke, outwardly his composure did not change.  Only the keenest of eyes would have noted the knife sinking back into it's sheath as he took another bite of fruit with the other hand.  Should the boy run, or do anything untoward, a limp would be his best departing option.

Even as Nyreese spoke to the boy, his nearly black eyes casually but intently scanned their immediate location.  Often times children were the best decoy, lulling one into a sense of security and superiority.  Any alleyway got a hard stare, any shop front with an open door got a glance, and he glanced up at rooftops feigning he was gauging the time of day by sun's position.

The boy looks at Keran and then back to Nyreese. "He scary. I talk to you." He grins up at her – a big, toothy smile for the pretty lady. She's nice too – maybe nicer than the man who sent him to deliver this message. So he has to get this message right. He puts on a look of intense concentration. "Other Man want you and Scary Man to meet him at tavern – one of the back tables. He approach you. He says… he says it would be mistake not to."

Nyreese doesn't miss Keran's casual observations of their surroundings. When the boy calls him Scary Man, she grins softly and winks at Keran. Alright, time to place the nice, mommy-type lady. Knowing that Keran has her back, she crouches down, at the same time, giving Keran a better view of their surroundings - ensuring that her adult body isn't in the way of his viewpoint.

"Don't worry, I'll protect you. He is a bit scary, isn't he. And stinky, too." She wrinkles up her nose at the last part. "It does seem that the other man is not giving us much of a choice. So I guess we should do as he says, hm?" She tells the child then reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small green gem.

"Here is something for being a very good messenger." She says handing it to him.

Everything else is lost on him. His eyes grow big at the sight -- a round, shiny gem that glints in the sun's light. His mouth makes a little 'O'. For him?

He snatches it out of her hand before she can change her mind. People did that here. You needed lightning quick reflexes to survive. "You nice lady," he nods sagely. "Consider less scary friend."

And, with that little nugget of wisdom, he disappears back into the crowd.

Nyreese can't help but laugh at the child's reaction. She had anticipated something similar. But what she hadn't anticipated is that the child did not run back in the direction of the tavern, where she assumes this man is waiting for them. One would think that the child would want the other part of his payment for delivering the message. But either this isn't the case, or Nyreese had just made another actual friendly contact here. Definitely something in their favour.

Now to see about this man. As she stands, she looks towards the tavern, rather glad that it had been their destination in the first place. She doesn't appreciate threats. And more often than not, she does the exact opposite when they are involved. But in this case, she feared for the child's safety. So even if the tavern hadn't been their destination, she would seriously consider changing her plans. In her mind, she places a soft, gently hand across her lower abdomen and sighs.

"Well, then. It seems we have someone who would prefer we stay on track." She murmurs to Keran. "Same plan. We go in, I make my deposit, you find a quiet table nearby. If this man approaches you, inform him that I had business to take care of and will join you very soon." She tells Keran and makes the final strides to the tavern.

< Tavern >

Inside, the air becomes thick with the smell of beer, smoke and food. Nyreese fights back the instinctual urge to cough and makes her way directly towards where the owner of the tavern is.

Doan, Tavern Owner

Ksenia Malikov

<< Tavern >>

Ksenia lounged in one of the informal seating areas of the tavern, one leg draped dramatically over the back of the sagging, once overstuffed and badly worn leather armchair. A small glass of some indistinct beverage sat warming on the nearby low table, and Ksenia idly dipped one finger in it before raising it to her lips and sucking the droplet off her fingertip. Her eyes- startlingly icy blue and clear- regarded a patron shrewdly from beneath thick dark lashes. The patron in question licked his lips nervously, shifting uncomfortably in his seat, a victim of his own traitorous anatomy.

The tavern owner, Doan, paused behind her chair, a tray of empty glasses in hand. He took in her gaze and the obviously discomfited customer, snorted in amusement and bent low. Lips against her ear, he said in a low whisper, "Save your time, sweetling. That one just emptied his pockets at the glasnot booth and came away the poorer for it. He's more likely to try to slit your throat for the contents of your purse than to take you up on what you're selling, and you bring enough business in that I'd hate to find you in the rubbish bin in the alley."

Ksenia snorted once and turned slightly toward Doan to reply, her eyes never leaving the now-sweating and no longer potential customer. "I'd like to see him try, but thank you for the notice." With a dramatic sigh- making sure to showcase her petite but attractive bosom- she got to her feet and wandered away after Doan without a look back, sliding onto a stool near the tavern owner. "Pickings have been slim lately, Doan," she sighed, toying with the spear of a drink garnish before popping it into her mouth.

Doan watched her darkly, but Ksenia just smiled around her mouthful of snack and dropped the now-bare spear onto the floor. He sighed. "You're not the only one with slim pickings," he growled. "Keep an eye out. My sources are telling me that we're going to see some action soon. In particular... look for a tall, exotic, female mercenary. Name's Nyreese. She and her crew are supposed to be coming through here any time now, and they pay a pretty penny for the privilege."

"Tall, exotic, can pay... sounds like my kind of woman," Ksenia drawled. Doan snorted.

"They're ALL your kind of woman. Or man. Just need to be breathing and have coin in their pocket."

Ksenia shrugged nonchalantly. "The truth is the truth." She didn't want to show Doan how his description had piqued her interest. Mercenary... itinerant... with money... she didn't want Doan to know how much she wanted out of this tavern, off this world, away from this life. Technically she was beholden to no one, but Doan was the double recipient of her talents; first, from the fees he charged her to operate in the bar and second, from the business she brought in while her clients waited.

Granted, it was a darn sight safer than thieving, but even she wasn't fool enough to think it could last forever. And she wanted out. And with that thought, she turned to keep an eye on the door through the gloom of the tavern. As if on cue,  two people entered- a hulking and forbidding looking fellow, and an reasonably tall woman with dusky skin, high cheekbones, and almond-shaped eyes. Exotic is understated. She's stunning.

The pair strode purposefully through the crowd, heading for Doan. Ksenia leaned forward a bit on the stool, posturing slightly to put herself in a better position to overhear and potentially interject should the opportunity present itself. The woman's companion looked big and rough, but was handsome enough and looked to have all his teeth; a welcome change from her current clientele. Either one would do...

{{Specialist}}

<<From M3S-462>>

Specialist emerged from the gate at a walk onto the smooth stone path, the town nearby. Those who had gone through before had set off on their mission, which Specialist wouldn't complain about. After all, time was something of an issue here. They had to make sure they could set up before any unfortunate circumstances took place.

That said, he began to scan the area, looking for good spots to set up that would give them an eye on the Gate, as well as a perimeter of the area for if Ronon and his team showed up. That should be easy enough, and he'd be done by the time the other two came through the Gate behind him. Then, they could get straight to work.

<< From M3S-462 >>

A few moments after Specialist strolls through, Martel comes out, eyes darting everywhere. He knows their mission, but he waits for Specialist's orders. He knows his job and just needs to wait for when he needs to do it.

In the distance, he manages to spot Keran and Nyreese  heading off to their destination. Not  that it really matters to him He just likes to know where everyone is.
