Had noted the boy's departure in the opposite direction as well, pursing lips faintly and finishing off the last bites of fruit as they headed toward the Tavern.  Nyreese had earned a few points when she decided the plans didn't change because of a few veiled threats.  If nothing else it gave him more leverage if things turned sour.

He closed his eyes before entering the tavern a step behind Nyreese so that when he opened them inside, he was already adjusting to the dimmer atmosphere, and could spot tables with and without people.  He noted the petite at the bar with a rogue's slight wink and cheek dimpling sidelong smile before upnodding to Nyreese and moving off to one side.

He didn't so much sit in the chair as turn it around, step over it and slide into it, leaning back so his shoulders were against the wall, and the chair balanced on two legs with it's back in front of him, where his arms folded loosely.  Languid and lazy was the impression he gave not to mention unarmed by conventional means, but the position he took was only a few steps from the front door, and gave him a wide berth view of the whole front of the bar.

Pulling out one of his toothpicks, he popped it into one corner of his molars, and made as if he was looking for a wait staff.

Nyreese gives Keran a slightly slower nod as he retreats to a table near the wall. Only after taking note of his location does she continue towards the bar where she finds Doan with a young woman who clearly isn't a patron. She's seen the woman in here before, but never had an encounter with her. In fat, she had been making it a point to avoid her. She didn't exactly disprove of her living, but she had never been able to understand how one could sell their body for a living. Of course, they likely had more to do with her own personal past than anything else.

Still, this one wasn't like most she'd seen. This one almost seemed respectable. And of course she wasn't about to turn down a potential contact. Especially not one that Doan approved of. So rather than feign disgust towards the girl's all too obvious tactics, she offers her a smile, bringing her eyes down, then back up again over her body, as if assessing her worth. She moves her eyes from the girl's to Doan's, leaving her with an impression that she might have a chance, if she plays her cards right.

"Hello, Doan." She practically purrs at the tavern owner. "Any news on how the market is selling today?" Normally, Nyreese would insist upon moving to the man's office. Or what he calls an office. But she knows that this woman has decided to take up residence here for a reason. Likely to listen in on their conversation. No reason to not indulge her. If the girl can decipher the code they'd developed over the years they'd been in partnership together, she deserves to hear what's going on. And perhaps deserves some more attention on Nyreese's behalf.

{Lantar}

<< From M3S-462 >>

Lantar is the last to come through, but he's no less alert than his two team members. It's his job to watch the gate and, even though Nyreese hadn't specifically come out and said it, Martel. The kid was a genius -- maybe smarter than the rest of them put together, but he was no soldier. On this planet, that could prove fatal, if you let it.

He looks to Specialist for orders. He doesn't like being out in the open. Exposed...

{{Specialist}}

Specialist glanced back at the other two as Lantar and Martel came through the Gate, it shutting down shortly after their arrival with typical procedure. The two looked to him for direction now, and with his mind made up, he was ready to provide it. Lantar was good for this sort of thing, but Martel they would have to be more careful with. Which either meant keeping him out of harms way, or pairing him with Lantar so they could be sure.

With his mind made up, he shifted then to face the two, demeanor calm and casual as always. "You two go there, top floor, get up a vantage point on the gate and main square, as best you can," he instructed, gesturing behind himself to the second tallest building in the place, which seemed to be some kind of inn. That was reasonable, since anyone who expected that they'd be watched, or who was cautious like Ronan probably was, would check the highest point. This would lessen their chances of being noticed.

"Stay in radio contact, let me know if anything comes through the Gate," he added as an afterthought, since they really didn't need that instruction.

Seeing Nyreese address the tender, he let the legs of his chair back down with an audible thunk, leaning back still against the wall however, and with eyes on the petite, made a beckoning motion with one hand, patting his knee after it. If Nyreese had business with the man, the woman was a distraction, and if he could manage that distraction, business could be concluded faster.

He pulled out a pouch off his belt and set it on the table in front of him after patting his lap, one would assume it was coin or tender for some kind of pay.  If she was what she seemed to be, she'd come over.  If she was a wait staff, she'd come over.  Either way, away from Nyreese; threat resolved.

<<Tavern>>

Stay long enough, they said, and Aiden Ford's team would come. Sure enough, even across the tavern, there could be no doubt. The questions… the bribes… the hunt had paid off. And now the fun begins. He smiles, a predator among pretenders.

Watching. Turning mismatched colors – one dark brown, one ice blue – on the woman when the two mercenaries went their separate directions. Following her across the room with those distinctive and, many had said, unnerving eyes. They stop where she stops: at the bar, where she's already striking up a conversation with the tavern's owner. Her contact on this planet. The companion is there as well, though she seems slightly less interested in selling her services and more interested in what they're saying.

Curious. He leaves his seat and navigates the sea of tables, making a circuitous loop for the front of the tavern. He's carrying an energy pistol and an assortment of blades only partially tucked away – just the weapons you're meant to see. The others aren't so obvious.

He makes no effort to hide – to blend in. There's no need. He wouldn't have arranged this meeting if he didn't intend to be seen. And it's time to make himself be seen. Though the man who had accompanied her would surely have noticed him by now. Despite appearances, observing the tavern's proceedings with a trained eye. Professional killers had a way of recognizing each other that transcended disguises. He bares his teeth in a barely contained snarl as he passes by. It's time to put on a show.

Approaching the tavern owner at the bar, he tosses him a dark velvet pouch full of flawless, rare gems. More coin than legally passes hands at one time in establishments like these. Someone of his skill, he has more where that came from, but this is enough to make his point. "For your… hospitality."

Knowing full well he's interrupting, he puts on a fake smile for the mercenary. "I think you got confused. This is the front of the tavern," he says, settling onto the stool but facing her. He's done his homework. Only a fool comes to Galina Varvera unarmed, and the people he's hunting are no fools, but he's completely at ease. Oh, yes, he knows all about the Wraith enzyme, how it enhances a user's natural abilities. He's still not impressed.

If only they knew who I am.

{{Lantar}}

<<By the Gate>>

It's not the tallest building near the gate, Lantar observes, but it'll still give the two of them a good vantage point. He slings his modified rifle over his shoulder; the added weight of the weapon making him feel more comfortable. He may have been a criminal by his own people's standards but this is exactly the place he would have avoided had he still been on his own. The things his boss asked of him. He sighs. "Alright, kid. You heard the man. Let's go."

Lantar glances at Martel and elbows him. He looks tense, eyes darting back and forth repeatedly. "Hey, I just hope he didn't send us to the nearest brothel. That would be embarrassing. Although… it looks like you could use the relief. Seriously, you're making me nervous. Ford's trained us for this."

He may not have been with the team for long – a few months now – but he's come to believe in the cause. Ford's cause. If Ford says these are bad people and needed to be stopped… well, he'd do his part. For now.

< Tavern >

Before Doan can even greet her or she can fully assess the woman who had taken up space nearby, a rather cocky man approaches, clearly intent on ... something. While she isn't immediately certain what that is, she isn't fool enough to think it's benign. It doesn't take a genius to recognise another mercenary. And to think that anyone with this amount of ego could be anything else around here was pure insanity. But if he wanted her dead, she would never have seen his face. And he clearly wants her to see his face. And the bundle of gems he presents to Doan.

Her initial reaction is a slightly raised eyebrow with a mildly amused facial expression. Was this supposed to impress her? His gaze is clearly fixed directly upon her rather than the companion nearby. Is this supposed to be an insult? Inferring that no woman could possibly be anything but either a trollop or a tavern servant? A woman like Nyreese with the amount of self confidence she has is rather difficult to insult. Something he would have already figured out.

"I believe it is you who is confused. Interrupting another transaction around here could be a hazard to your health." She says casually, though places a hand on her sidearm to illustrate her point. She nods towards the bag of gems, intended to be some kind of payment, presumably for Doan. If this man has been allowed to operate in the tavern, the owner has some serious questions to answer. "Trying to make up for something?" She asks, looking him up and down, pointedly giving one location in particular more attention than the rest of his body before returning her gaze to his eyes. Having stared into the eyes of Aiden Ford for so long, his are not unsettling in the least. In fact, they are rather normal in comparison.

< Path From Gate >

Martel shrugs his shoulders, adjusting the pack on his back to a more comfortable position. He gives out a low grunt at Lantar's elbow. It didn't actually hurt. In fact he barely feels it. But it just seems like the appropriate reaction. He winces at Lantar's suggestion. He was never really that popular back home. In fact, any time he got close to a girl was because she wanted to use him. His brains, not his body. He'd actually not mind it so much if it had been for his body, but he knows better. In fact, he'd been told better.

"R-right, I know." He half stammers. "It's just ... this place ... " His eyes continue to glance around as he relies on his enhanced senses to follow Lantar to their destination. If he's ever going to get caught, it would be in a place like this. He'd been on the run for almost two months when Nyreese had found him. If anyone understands what he's going through, it's her - she saw how terrified he'd been back then. His fear and lack of ability to defend himself is what prompted him to take the enzyme Ford offered. But he still didn't trust himself to be able to fight off the people his government would be sending after him.

{{Specialist}}
<<By the Gate>>

With his orders given, Specialist was content to see both Lantar and Martel move off to follow the instructions, little to no complaint given. That was the sort of thing he expected when he was in charge, though he was certainly open to alternative suggestions if a better one could be presented. But at this point there was no such thing, and so they could get to work, before they had unpleasant visitors.

At that point then he went off himself, making his way over to a ground level position that would allow him to complement and augment the oversight of the other two, for better sight, and so he could get the blind spots. That sort of thing was important for any surveillance, and he put the training he had to use.

So, he took up his position then, near the main square, and near the junction of the main road. Time to settle down and wait. "In position, let me know if you see anything," he said over the radio, his only indication that he was related to the men above, before settling into innocuous activity.

Doan, Tavern Owner

Ksenia Malikov

<< Tavern >>

Doan glanced warningly at Ksenia- it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out he wasn't happy she was there, but knew there was nothing to be done about it so was settling for a silent 'keep your mouth shut' approach- and then turned his whole attention to the mercenary. "Quiet as a vacuum, and just as ready for something to fill it," he replied easily, putting together a beverage below the bar with practiced movements and setting it gently on the bar in front of her.

Ksenia didn't miss the assessing look Nyreese had given her, and was about to move closer when she noticed the big man against the corner gesturing her over. She bit her lip, momentarily torn between wanting to know what this whole 'arrangement' Doan had going with the mercenaries was and the prospect of some additional- and potentially pleasurable- coin to be made. If she played her cards right, she mused, she should be able to garner a little of both.

Her decision was made when the man with the mismatched eyes approaches and inserts himself into the conversation. She wanted nothing to do with him; the vibes he put off were in the seriously creepy category and the last thing she wanted was to call his attention to her. She gives Nyreese a small, wistful smile, and steps around her as she moves toward the big man, fingers trailing across Nyreese's lower back as she moves past. She doesn't miss the pouch of what sounds like gems hitting the counter, and the man's low threatening tones, and suddenly wants to be far far away and the potential protection of the mercenary's large companion is looking more and more attractive.

She eases herself onto the knee he'd indicated and feels very, very small next to his bulk. Good. Maybe then no one will notice me if things go south. Saucily, she drapes one leg across his lap and leans in close. "I don't think we've been properly introduced. I'm Ksenia."

With a deft scoop and sweep, he repositioned the girl so she was straddling the one knee but with her back to him, and his left hand went around her middle, resting his chin on her small shoulder with a rakish smile even as he set the point of the sabo knife just under her ribs below the level of the table and hidden by her own arm. "I'm the one, that makes sure she walks out of here alive... play along, and so do you.  Tell me, pretty little Ksenia.  Have you seen any strange groups pass through here lately?"

He kept his voice pitched low and against her cheek, the faint rasp of half a day's growth against her ear keeping her close just in case she responded poorly.  All the while he kept his peripheral vision on the bar itself, his other hand resting on his opposite thigh, ready to draw and throw.  It was less than six or seven meters, almost point blank for him.  Even if the man was fast enough to evade, it would give Nyreese a window to strike or get clear.

{Faolan}

"Nyreese." Faolan pronounces her name slowly and with measured intent, his lips curling in disgust, as if just acknowledging her has somehow dirtied him. Overtaken by the sudden need to bathe, he leans forward. Judging her. Finding her wanting. "Bold suggestions… and from someone so utterly insignificant. You're from some backwater planet. Uncivilized savages, still wallowing in the dirt, the lot of you." He waves a dismissive hand. "So, why don't you tell me, which one of the men fancies the barbarian girl? Is it Aiden? That would explain why he keeps you around. He must not be able to get any from a real woman."

But he's not finished. His eyes, so cold and unrelenting, fall next on the Genii, who is putting on a rather convincing little act. Such a tiresome affair, really. It needs to come to an end. "And, you, Keran," he sneers, keeping the other man locked in his sights. "At least you're from proper stock. But what are you really? You're a disgrace to your people. Stripped of your rank, reduced to… nothing. The price of choosing the losing side. You think Aiden has given you new purpose? You'll never make a difference against the Wraith. Aiden must pity you to keep you, the eternal failure."

Aiden's lieutenants – the so-called healer and the spy. In person, they're even less impressive, if that's even possible. Though maybe they'd like to keep on breathing. He's learned not to underestimate loyalty, but he's seen too many men sell out another to save their own skin or to fill their pockets with a little more coin. "I know you, but I don't care about you. There's another that I do. Hand him over. Ithir claims him as our own. You have no claim."

< Tavern >

Feeling the fingers of the other woman slide across her lower back, Nyreese feels a pang of sympathy for the girl. Even makes a mental note to seek her out later. Not for any kind of pleasure - that's not her style. But to find a way to help her, if only to give her some financial stability. There's something about her that attracts the healer. In a motherly sense.

Nyreese barely manages to keep the reaction to her real name slithering out of the man's mouth away from her face. Very few, if any, knew her by that name. Least of all, anyone from around here. Here, they knew her as Katya. So how would this man have learned not just her name, but apparently the names of everyone in their little family? As well as where she comes from? And the others? She manages to affect a bored, even tired look as he makes futile attempts to insult her people. A people who were no more, in fact. Sure there were other tribes on her world, but her tribe had been wiped up shortly after meeting Aiden. But she hadn't looked back. She'd never been one to dwell on misfortunes. Especially ones she had no control over.

When the man turns his attention to Keran, she gives Doan a meaningful look. One that no one would understand but him - a system they'd developed long ago. 'Prepare. The odds of this ending well are slim to none.' Before Faolan can look back at her, she's refocused her gaze on him, trusting Keran to send the silent notification via the radio to the other three outside. She would have done it already, but the audible static from the radio would certainly be heard by this man and that would not bode well for them.

Then the man says a familiar word. 'Ithir.' She had heard that name only once, from one other person - Martel. She gets a cold feeling in her stomach. The boy had always been afraid of this day. He spoke of Death coming for him. His world would hunt him down, and any other defectors. There had only been a few others above him on the list, but none of them had escaped at the time he had; the leaders of the Resistance, Cullen Shea and Ashtah Teyanos. The former came from a poor family of fighters, the latter a daughter of a high council members. Her relationship made her family even more determined to capture, torture and kill her as a warning and symbol to the rest of the Resistance: no one is immune to our power.

Outwardly, Nyreese is still the calm, neutral-faced mercenary. A slender shoulder rises in a delicate shrug. "Even if I knew what you were talking about," She says smoothly as she reaches for the drink Doan had prepared her. "What incentive do I have to do such a thing?"

Ksenia Malikov

Ksenia lets him handle her; she's used to it, and when he's got her settled- facing away from him, okay then, whatever floats his boat- and he curls one of those big arms around her waist she almost feels a little safer....

Until the gentle prod of the knifepoint against her ribs. Oh for... can't a girl catch a freaking break? Just once...

With a sigh of irritation, she wraps her ankles behind his lower leg, locking them into place just behind his (sizable) calf. It serves two purposes; first, to make sure he doesn't go anywhere, quickly, without her, and second, gives her leverage to lean back and continue the charade. She rests the back of her head against his collarbone and turns her face toward his neck, nibbling gently on his earlobe. "Just like Doan told Nyreese- been dead as a churchyard lately. He's been waiting for you jokers to show up for a week or so. Only thing out of the ordinary has been Mr. Creepy over there, lurking off an on for a month or so."

She stays as she is, nuzzling his neck and ear, as the aforementioned person of interest addresses her captor, then the woman, pretending not to notice but mentally aligning herself with the mercenaries. In for a penny, she thought desperately. The lid is going to blow off this sooner than later and I want a quick reliable exit strategy when it does.

Doan, Tavern Owner

Doan stands quietly behind the bar, the sinking feeling in his stomach intensifying as Faolan confronts Nyreese. He doesn't like this, not one bit, and the longer the mercenaries face off the more likely there is to be damage above and beyond an average bar fight.

Eyes steely and moving slowly, making sure everyone sees what he is doing, he reaches under the bar and pulls out a sawed off shotgun and sets it on the counter, one hand on the stock and the other on the barrel. "Your business just became none of mine," he snarls under his breath. "Out. All of you. Now. I don't give a damn what you do, but you won't be doing it in here."

Keran leaned his head back and to one side to actually seem to open his neck and ear to the girl's nuzzling words, even as black eyes stared back at Faolan without emotion.  A pitiful man to attempt to use emotional barbs on a Genaii soldier.  Anyone who knew anything would know that was beaten out of them at very young age if they joined the service.  His own brother did that for him in fact, a dual sided barb that favor.

As the girl gave her information so readily, he smiled faintly and turned the knife he held against her side around, and subtly nudged the handle of the blade against her palm resting in his lap, giving his rogue's smile as the bar tender effectively kicked them out.  It gave him an opportunity he hadn't had a moment before.

Raising and pushing the chair back in one motion, he used the chair legs scraping to cover the three quick taps to the radio on his belt, even as his other arm was turning Ksenia around to face him, the knife he'd given her trapped between them. Aloud he said "Looks like we do business another time, dove..." cupping her cheek and bending to apparently give her neck a nip.

Whispering as he did this, "Feign disappointment, and flop in the stool facing his back... I will not fault you if you choose to do nothing ... but if you do, I can see a lucrative future ahead of you..." Straightening, he gave her rear a pat to send her on her way, and since he wasn't pretending to not be with Nyreese he could openly nod to her once.  Outwardly, it was a sign he was ready to go, but between them it was an affirmative of what she'd hoped he'd done.
