Two heads surfaced from the deep cold waters near the North East Pier, from a perspective of one of the cities balconies, you would have been literally amazed to see the red and blonde heads bobbing in the water. Worse still, even just a casual glance would tell you they could be in trouble as the blonde did her best to guide her companion closer to the nearest safe haven, a pier. The only trouble was, the top of it was at least twelve feet above them and very little in the way of handholds.

"Uuuooooah!" A sudden gasp escaped from Melinda's mouth as she and Julia came up, it was quicker than she thought, but also the total time was longer and only that last ascent was in any way rapid. She trod water, trying to kick their way closer to the structure, but that same tide had waves, small ones but waves nonetheless pushing them back. She couldn't speak, not even if she tried to.

In the last moments before surfacing, vision rimmed in black, Giulia did the stupid thing and gasped. Rather than air she got a mouthful of salt water, her only salvation was that they broke the surface in time for her to wretch it out.

She felt like she was coughing up a lung, which she would thank it kindly to remain where it was now that oxygen was flooding back and needed to be distributed around her body. Legs kept kicking, deternot tmined to stay afloat and not to duck back under.

Once she had her breath back enough, her eyes lifted to see the structure of Atlantis, feeling very small and in awe of its structure. That awe was by more coughing, renewing the coughing again. Looking again she could see the new problem that faced them, there was no way they were getting close to the City and getting up was going to be difficult. The only salvation she could think they had at this point was the city's sensors picking them up.

By now Melinda had one arm around Julia's torso, holding her as fast as she possibly could, all the while treading water and doing her best to stay as close to the pier as possible. Which was beginning to prove difficult with the tide going against them. "I've got you Julia, try and relax....just let yourself go loose, I can hold you." She was of course over estimating herself just a little, already drained from the lack of oxygen and the swim up from below, Mel was teetering on collapse herself. She started speaking softly and slowly, as one would knowing it might be their last words. "I am so sorry, really sorry I got you into this. This whole damned thing is all my fault and if I hadn't been so adamant as to want to study every animal close at hand I find, this would never had happened." Possibly the most she had ever said in one statement in her life.

{Richard Woolsey}

Richard with his coffee in his hand took a sip of the warm liquid that he enjoyed so much.
He decided that he would get a good view while he enjoyed his short break and went out onto the balcony where he overlooked the large mass of water below him he studied the water far below him.
He was always amazed at how beautiful the city was and was truly thankful that he was aloud to see it.

Richard was about to go back inside when he heard some peculiar splashing he looked straight down to see two women in the water who appeared to be in distress.
Suddenly his mind shot into action as he realized that they needed help he rushed back inside to find help.

"Hello is anyone there!" he yelled out trying to get anyones attention as quickly as possible

"There are people in the water down there I want someone to get down there immediately and help them!" he yelled out

It didn't take a great deal of intelligence to know something was wrong as soon as Chuck heard Woolsey yelling, the man rarely raised his voice. To save a lot of time, Chuck used his radio in the first instance, secondly he went to his city wide cameras to get a view and he could clearly see the problem.

"I'm on it sir." He didn't even have to leave his seat, next he made a base wide call. "Emergency teams, North East Pier, we have Doctors Montale and Olofsson in the water." Then he wondered how the hell they got there? Where was Ronon and the alien woman?

Cameron Mitchel

When the warning sounded, Cam started himself up as he took his gear. He called the radio for his team and started running for the exterior of the city. Some of the personnel brough rope so he carried it halfway towrd there. He spoke to the gate tech, "Whats going on, Campbell?"

Chuck pointed toward the water and Cam's eyes went up when he saw both women in the water drowning. He reacted as he yelled out, "Alright people. Lets get them out of the water! Get a med team on standby!"

He took the rope and tied one end to the balcony and tossed the other end into the water. He shouted down, "Doctors, grab that end of the rope. I'm coming in."

He ran and took a dive into the water below with a splash.

"Sir wait!" He was about to tell the Colonel to at least take of his boots and socks but it was too late. "Guys, grab the other end of the rope, otherwise we'll be saving the saver as well." More than likely that would be the situation, with Cam's boots dragging him down.

Giulia tried for a moment to relax, but a burst of panic as felt herself nearly sink under spurred her to keep kicking her legs, though sporadic lyrics interrupted by her wrenching. A mouthful or two of salt water was not a recommendation for her health.

"Do not beat yourself up.... about this, you were not ....to know the damage.... down in that section."

It was an effort to talk between coughs and wretches but Giulia was not wanting to hear this guilt trip. In all honesty, she would have done the same in search of a new technology she could reverse engineer.

Her head ducked under the water, scrabbling in the water, Giulia fought for survival, fought to get herself up and above the water.

"You can make it up to me by .... teaching me to be a stronger .... swimmer."

Smilng a little at her friend, holding on to her fast as she heard the splash, feeling hope but she was unsure how long she could keep swimming, her legs were waning.

"Oh no you don't!" Mel all but yelled as Julia's head went under; she tightened her grip around the others waist and kicked harder all the while focusing on that now receding pier. About then as her head came up for direction, she saw Cam and a team come running down the long walkway, for a moment she was confused as she saw the Colonel dive in, boots and all. Mel knew only too well what that would mean, more so as she saw the rope come spiraling out towards her. Grabbing the rope with one free hand, she quickly tied under Julia's arms, reassuring her as she did so. "Deal! I'll have you swimming laps like a pro, now ...." A gulp of water went down her own throat, almost causing her to gag. "Now hang on and try to float on your back."

The boys and girls up top, saw the line go taut, so they began to haul on it. Meanwhile Mel swam strongly now, unencumbered by the extra weight, she headed for Cam stopping just short of him. "Sir, do you mind if I say that was foolish?.....but thank you just the same." If anyone was to do what he just did, it would be Cam Mitchell, never leave anyone behind. "We need to help Julia out, I'm fine, she is not and there is nothing to climb up with." Her head inclined towards the slippery structure of the pier.

With Cam disappearing beneath the water, he inwardly cursed or swore to himself. Positioning himself undewater where he is facing up, he was sinking. Fast. Because of the extra weight. Good thing he could hold his breath or he would have drowned. Taking his knife from below his belt, he cut the laces off from his shoes and pulled his shoes off. He did the same with his other feet as well and placed the knife back into his sheath. For what it seemed like five long seconds underwater, he firmly and strongly propelled himself through the water and cut through into the gaping oxygen rich environment as he gasped once for breath. For the moment he wasn't thinking straight when  he dived in for the girls. It was sort of his heroic moment and then it kicked him on the head.

As Mel approached him and both reprimanded him as well as thanking him, Cam responded half out of breath, "What can I say?"

He left that thought standing as he swam to Julia and grabbed her gently but firmly as he pulled her above and along the water toward the pier, "Hang in there, Doctor. You're in safe hands"

He wondered if it could be about time when an Asgard beaming device would come in handy at some point because they would really use it.

The security of the rope around her chest could not have come soon enough. That single tether gave her the chance to rest, her already punished limbs, though the surrendering to her natural buoyancy was not a smooth transition. Any time she felt she might sink, Giulia rotated her arms to get away from the sensation.

Reluctantly she watched Mel move away to meet Cam, then watched the water move around her as the line was pulled on. Water spilling down over her head and some going down her already wretched raw throat. If it wasn't for that, she might just enjoy the ride but there was something daunting about the deep fathoms below her. Never more now than did she understand the phrase "being all at sea".

For a moment she jolted when Cam took hold of her, then relaxed when she realised it was help. As she was pulled along, she fought against surrendering to her exhaustion, the want to sleep.

With the small team hauling on the rope, Chuck at the head, it took only moments to draw both Julia and Cam in. That was when the moment came for Cam to let go and tread water for a while, at least now those two were close Cam could at least get a hand hold on something. "Sir you can let her go now." He looked over the edge of the twelve feet or so drop, slippery as you would expect, almost vertical yet at least there were a few indents Julia might be able to get a foot hold on if necessary.

"Doctor we'll pull you up steadily but you might need to fend yourself off the sides to avoid getting hurt." A proper warning he felt needed saying. "Come on guys, now pull."

"I'll take that as an apology Colonel." Melinda really didn't have anything on the man, he was brave to a fault, so much so she'd have to get him those boots soon enough. With that, seeing he was okay, Mel struck out for Julia, she reached the bottom of the pier just as they started to lift her up, one hand reaching out to steady her friends feet. "Dinner is on me Julia for the next year." She called out to her dangling above.

As Cameron looked up watching Julia ascend to the pier, he looked back to Melinda as he thought a bit. Looking around, he noticed the waves quiet. A bit gentle. It was slightly windy outside. He responded, "You know, you're next, right?"

He stood at ready still floating on the waters near the pier.

Feeling herself starting to rise out of the water, Guilia forced herself out of her sleepy state and put her arms out to keep herself from bashing into the side of the City pier to much, while being greatful for Mel's help. She heard her offer of food for a year, but she was both mentally and physically exhausted to make a decision wother to hold Mel to it. Only determination was keeping herself going and that was mostly just gas fumes.

Icy water dropped of her body, the cold was made all the worse by the light winds, making her shiver as her body sought to keep her warm.

"Yessir." Mel thought for now she'd forgo the salute, surely Cam would understand. That was the difficult part for the young Dane, being technically a civilian on the base, but still having her reserve status as a Lieutenant in the RDAF, it was confusing sometimes.

She watched as Julia eventually disappeared over the edge, then the rope came twirling back down again.

"Tie it on Doc." She heard Chuck say.

"No, just hold tight Chuck." With that, she pulled back on it, testing the strain. Being assured those strong people up there had a tight grip, Mel went up, hand over hand and soon she was on the edge and over it. By then her adrenalin had run out and she collapsed next to Julia. Her head turned to the side, this experience had bonded the two rather inward and shy doctors for life in her view. "Teyla's people have a sister bonding ceremony, for those not of the same blood. Would you go through it with me?" She said almost whispering to her in Italian. The sky above looked beautiful now.

There was a blanket, or perhaps she was so cold she felt warm. It didn't matter really, her eyes were fixed on the sky above. Endless as the ocean she'd been plucked from. What she knew for certain was she felt alive and an affinity for her new friend now collapsing beside her on the pier deck.

Turning her head, she faced Mel listening to her request in Italian, then replied likewise.
" Yes, I think after this we should. I would follow you to hell my sister, at least it's warm down there. Thank you for saving my life. "

Shivering, another thought passed into her tired head.

" Ronon and Ashtah, they are still trapped down there."

"We'll have you both warm and dry soon Doctors." Chuck went on one knee to assure himself both were okay, yet he was thrown off a little when Julia mentioned Ronon and the visitor Ashtah. "Trapped ma'am? Do you know exactly where? That was the strangest thing you know, for the last thirty minutes or so we had none of you on the city wide life signs detector. Last we saw you all was near Doctor Zelenka's rooms."

As he spoke, one of the other SF's threw down the rope to Cam, it landed with a splash right near him. "Sir you want us to haul you up, or can you climb?" He asked.

Sometimes in your life you find a bondmate, sometimes that happens over time, but for Melinda and her new found sister Julia, it happened almost the very moment, as difficult as it was, they met. There seemed to be a common link, an energy that joined the two of them as one. She did try in vain to prop herself up, yet for now her own energy was spent and in that she knew the two of them would be carried to sick bay and some TLC. "To hell and back." She repeated in perfect Italian.

Thoughts off Ronon and Ashtah seeped into her mind, she knew they would be running low on air. "Chuck...call Woolsey, there is a door three levels below Doctor Zelenka's room, its jammed shut....we...we couldn't open it." As she spoke, her hand rested on that of Julia's, that touch, it was worth gold. "I think in that...what we did in a way saved us both." That was true, because not long ago, Melinda's spirits were at a low ebb, now she had something more than she did before.

" There was severe damage to that section, how much..... I can't tell, far to dark down there..... fried doesn't cover it."

Giulia told Chuck between chattering teeth and pauses to ease her raw throat, not to mention the exhaustion that made her limbs feel like deadweight. The touch of Mel's hand just registered as warmth crept slowly into her fingers and toes.

Her eyes closed, partly because of exhaustion and partly to enjoy being alive with her new sister.

Soon a medical team had arrived on the scene laying thermal blankets over both women then proceeding to lift them gently onto gurneys. "Easy with them guys, they've been through a lot."

"We'll take care of them Chuck, Doctor Keller is on stand by. Don't worry they'll be fine." Harris, a rather lean looking young man told him.

"Thanks Danny." Chuck was grateful at least now that part was off his mind. He bent again to Julia. "We'll send a team down there Doc, hopefully maybe Doctor Zelenka can figure it out." He knew McKay would at least, but in lieu of him, Radek was just as good. "I'll wait here for the Colonel." He said at the end.

As Cam watched Mel ascend to the last part of the pier and the rope was tossed down again, he was satisfied that both girls were safe. Taking the rope, he tied it a bit around his waist to make sure he doesn't fall. He shouted up letting Chuck know he was coming up, "Rope is secured. Keep a tight leash and I'm coming up."

Securing himself, he grabbed the other rope and pulled himself up while grabbing a handhold. Taking a foot, he found a foothold and climbed up with their help at pulling him up. One by one, he was soon atop of the pier for what seemed to be a while. It was a little windy but not much. Sure he was drenched and barefoot, but he was a soldier. He was bred to endure. Once he reached to the top, he pulled himself up and readied himself for Keller to come by and check him for hypothermia because the water was so cold.

For now, all the voices were a blur as Mel's coldness started to set in, just for a moment. Then she suddenly began to warm up as someone placed what must have been a thermal blanket over her; one hand slipped out from underneath, reaching out to Julia. "You know..." She said softly. "...I've always wanted a sister more than a brother. Never got either but now I think my wish has come true." Her voice trailed off as the medics took them away.

He followed the group toward the medical section of Atlantis satisfied that the girls will be fine. He was concerned and wondering where Ronon was and that other missing woman.

"You look like my cat after the rain sir." Chuck had to hold back from a hearty laugh, he'd never seen a Colonel looking so miserable before, yet at least they did what they had to do. "We have them Mister Woolsey, sending both ladies and Colonel Mitchell to med bay now." That would at least satisfy him, now all Chuck had to do was make sure everyone left the pier safely, it was looking like a storm brewing in the west.

There wasn't much feeling in her cold fingers at the minute, the thermal blanket was helping bring in heat, however feeling Mel's hand she moved her hands to hold on, she was not planning to let go. Aria searched around the pier. Scuttlebut said her commander was somewhere down there. They had been running ragged across the Pegasus galaxy looking for Mike. He was nowhere to be seen. She knew Elle, but she never knew just how much obsession she had to find him. There was pain in her that she wanted to find him. Several times, Aria wanted to object but she couldn't very well get in her way. Nobody should anger an Aussie. Aria knew that because there we times she could get angry herself.

Stopping before the raised ledge, Aria placed her boot on the raised platform and looked out into the sea. It was usually calm with a cool breeze. Aria hoped it wouldn't change. That it would stay the same. It was pretty out there. Still, she was looking for Elle and couldn't find her somewhere. She even checked the north and south pier. Her commander was somewhere.

Looking to her right, Aria finally saw Elle on the balcony. With an exhale, she left her position and walked over to it approaching her.

It had been almost six hours since Elle left her room. She started at six am sharp, donning her 'active wear' then heading straight for the gym. She had spent an hour there, soon after she headed outside to run, just run. That was all she wanted to do now, as if she was running from something, or most likely to something. Elle knew Mike was alive, she could feel him and she swore that if possible, if she ever caught the Wraith responsible for taking the one single thing out of her life that gave her passion, she would kill that Wraith with her own hands.

So she had been pushing herself hard. Already she was back to the weight she bore when at the peak of her fitness when she was in her mid twenties. At 38 she felt like she could run to hell and back again, just short of six foot tall and 61 kilograms, she was like a rock, a long tall rock. Yesterday she ran on the mainland, sparred with Teyla for three hours until it was Teyla who had to quite. That evening she was back in the gym sparring with one of the marines. She had to be ready.

A sound behind her alerted her sharp ears, even over the music in her head. Turning her Ipod off she saw her XO Aria. She had stopped running hours ago, so here she was simply sitting there looking down at the fish swimming around the base of the city piers. "Hey." She said, not cheerfully, just a greeting. "Looking for something Aria?" Of course she was, it was the first time Elle had stopped doing something for a month.

Aria nodded approaching her, "Yeah. You."

It sounded almost cheeky but Aria knew it wasn't the time so her cheekiness was cloaked. Barely. The woman hoped she wouldn't notice. She kept her professionalism as her expression was of concern for her captain. Standing within the balcony, she placed her hand on the railing overlooking the waters and inquired, "Need company, Elle?" Her stance was straight as was her long, braided ponytail.

They were friends. Friends don't let friends...hangout...alone. Aria was concerned, but she wanted to know if Elle would be alright. At this point, it wasn't time to get back to work till her captain was ready to go. No rush. She'll back her game any time, any where as long as she doesn't go to far this time and listens to her XO's counsel.

"I might." She said looking back into the water, the very place she spent most of her teenage life, in the water, on the water then she joined the Navy and it continued. At the moment, most of the heat she had been generating everywhere had died down a little, the constant heavy work outs were starting to do what she wanted them to do; help her focus on living rather than the mood she had carried for almost a month now. She was ready to rejoin the human race, and to be sure, make a few apologies all round. "I guess I've been a bit of an arse lately haven't I?" That was the easiest thing in the world to admit.

Well, that wasn't so hard to admit, Aria thought to herself. Offering a smile, she shook her head, "Nah. You're good. I understand and would have done the same in your situation if someone was taken." She looked out at the oceans. The waters around Atlantis seemed different than Earth. They had an odd smell or scent. Back on Earth, she wouldn't have thought all water based planets wouldn't smell so different. Just the same. When she visited the first planet with water, she was wrong. The smell was off. By a few.

Aria nodded responding to her, "We should go. If you're ready, that is." Unless she wanted to promote her commander of the UNS Dreadnought, Aria would be fine with that. Either ways. She always wanted a command of her own. Someday. Not now, but later. Much, much later.

"You know Aria I never realized until today how much I need people like you. I think at some point we all tend to isolate ourselves when we're going through hardship. We either let it get to us, or we overcome it. For me it took a little longer, think yourself lucky I'm not my Grandmother. When Pop passed away too young, she never got over and was the angriest old woman you'd ever want to meet until the day she joined him. But you know what? We all understood where she was coming from." She pulled the earphones away from her head, folded them neatly, holding them tightly in her hand. "Come on, who do I have to apologize to first?"

Aria shrugged responding, "Don't know. So whats the plan?" She thought about adding boss, but maybe not the right time?

She was thinking and processing what Elle said to her about her grandmother and pop. Her family. It was a  lot to think about. Aria followed Elle out leaving the Pier. They were ready for the next mission and hopefully this next mission they will be bringing Mike back home. It has to be.

As always, Elle winged it as often as she could. She often found the best plans rarely worked out anyway. "Carrie Svennson first. Then Annie and anyone else I've offended lately. Aria nodded and shrugged following her, "Yeah. I haven't seen her. She might be in the cafe though." She had her ears almost everywhere. It was nice to have friends to rely on for information. The woman walked about halfway when her stomach grumbled. The commander sighed patting her stomach and muttered, "Great. I'm hungry. Might as well eat something."

Aria knew where they were headed to. The Cafe. They might have some kind of special waiting for them, but a Mediterranean chicken salad waited for her. She just hoped they would have it this time.

<<From Gate room via pilots ready room>>

With the time available Jordan knew she wasn't about to go for a grocery run. Leaving her SEAL pack behind in the ready room, she procured a helmet, coms link and the 401 flight data pack thanking the Airman as she then hurried back the way she came, asking directions twice before finding herself walking up to the Griffon. By the time she arrived AR-2 was already there. Locked out of course as she had the data plug for the side door. "Ugly thing isn't it?" She casually remarked while aiming the small data remote at the door panel, it opened with a hiss of air allowing the steps to unfold.

With her helmet tucked under her arm she took the four steps up breathing in the battle smell of the little ship. She shouldn't have bothered though collecting the headware as there was already a dozen of them sitting on the rear compartment seats. There was a rack of small arms on one bulkhead, that was pleasing with the knowledge of what they were about to do. "If you don't mind doing the driving Major, I can look after Tactical, more my thing anyway."

Evan eyed O'Neil, then glanced at his team.

Maxwell was standing at perfect attention, like a puppy eager to please.

"One of us can pilot, sure," he said. "Do you have a preference, or should I let the good corporal get some more flight time?"

Jordan had her mouth open to reply when immediately behind Valentine she saw the two El'Dari women hot footing it towards them. Very rapidly her words left the mouth. "Erm Lorne I don't see pilots wings on his chest." Not wanting to sound sarcastic, she could see the poor guys enthusiasm though. "He can sit up front with you in the co-pilots seat. Valentine..." Jordan nodded to her shooter. "In case we need it, you can do the gun slot again and by the way, where the hell is the other two?" Her team members were MIA at the moment.

Around the time O'Neil said her piece, Sunniva and Kara arrived. "Excuse us for interrupting Commander, Major. We need a small favor although we're aware you're in a hurry to leave. We have just missed the young Doctors leaving for the Mainland in one of your 'Jumpers' and if you could would it be possible for you to drop us off on your way out?"

Jordan thought about it for a minute. "Lorne, I guess we could do that don't you think. We certainly wouldn't have to land." They had beaming, that was good enough.

Evan glanced back at Maxwell, whose eyes had gone wide at O'Neil's comment about his lack of pilot wings. Yep, just like kicking a puppy. He'd have to give the kid some flight time in first seat when there wasn't a crisis, should such a time ever exist in the Pegasus Galaxy.

Then he nodded at the two El'Dari who'd arrived. "We can beam you down to the mainland, if that's acceptable." To Maxwell he said, "Be my copilot."

Maxwell looked like a kicked puppy for an instant before he nodded and said, "Yes, sir."

Evan gestured for Maxwell to precede him aboard the ship, then waited for a response from the El'Dari.

Another ride in the ship sounded fun, though having a couple aliens in seemed like an odd combination. He did like the sound of taking the gun position again.

“You El’dari been in one of our ships before, you have your own ships?” he figured being nice was the right thing to do.

“What are you both doing here anyway?” He asked curious why the El’dari were here.

Kára followed her leader a bit along the interior of the city toward the exterior via the elevator without much of a backward glance. Being new here, she felt uncomfortable among the humans. Even being stared at was causing her to become slightly agitated. Upon arriving to the piers to meet the teams, Kára managed a few breathing to keep her emotions under control. Last thing she needed was an intergalactic incident with another ally race.

Turning her face away, she noted the outside of the base and exclaimed softly. It was massive and breathtaking as well as not cold anymore. She was growing warm under her heavy coat. Her mistress spoke causing her to focus on the shuttle before them. She could feel the staring again and someone asking a direct question out of turn. It wasn't the right place to ask this question before a commanding officer.

Not wanting to respond, Kára kept her silence and breathing minimal to avoid speaking out of turn. The human's tone was all sort of wrong to her. It was making her upset. She was a warrior. Warriors pride themselves as being formal. Mostly.

Jon was late again as he approached Jordan's side. He spoke letting her know of his position, "I'm here, commander. Want me to, umm, pilot something?" He wondered while eyeing the shuttle on the pier.

He also noted one of the El'Dari being uncomfortable. He couldn't blame her. They were the aliens here or rather, the humans were the aliens to the El'dari. The team XO wanted to tell Valentine to be quiet, but he felt it wasn't his place to do that. He was just simply asking a curious question. No harm done as he casually shrugged.

The young human's curiosity appeared to have gotten the better of him, Sunniva for one didn't find that too out of the ordinary nor strange. Nothing more than a slight distraction. "We have in answer to both your questions Corporal." She did note his rank. "As to why we are here, our mission is twofold. On the one hand we came to secure out alliance with your people, on the other hand your Athosian friends need our assistance on the mainland for a problem they have encountered. Does my answer satisfy you?" She was smiling, much like a cat before consuming its prey.

Looking over the young man's head, Sunniva lowered her chin slightly in thanks to Lorne. "We are grateful, we do seem to have come unprepared. Thank you Major." She remembered not too long ago when he visited her world, he was like an awe struck teenager then, in this light though she could see the veteran warrior in him.

Jordan was becoming impatient, at least Jon had showed up. It was passed time for them to leave and as fate would have it, she saw Guilia running to them. "You'll have to sit in back this time Lieutenant, the cockpit is already taken up now." With the rear ramp door down, Guilia ducked in quickly to find a seat, Jordan nodded her presence then spoke to everyone at once. "Take your places, we leave in one minute." With that she herself climbed up into the cockpit, fitting her helmet on at the same time, then taking the TO's seat behind the co-pilot. A good thing if Lorne needed her input for the exit, from there she could see everything.

Sunniva took the cue, gaining a seat on the benches in the rear section, she strapped the seat belt on while looking around her. The design was rudimentary in her eyes, but more than functional for its purpose.

Evan pressed his lips into a thin line at Valentine's comments but said nothing; let his own CO deal with him.

To Agathon he said, "Maybe you can take the stick on the backswing."

Once everyone else was aboard, Evan climbed in, headed for the cockpit, slid into the pilot's seat and buckled himself in.

Maxwell, bless his overeager little heart, had started the preflight checks, informed Evan of where he was in the process.

Evan told him to continue, corrected him gently when he missed a step, and then he fired up the engines.

He checked in with the control tower.

"Atlantis, this is Griffin. Are we cleared for takeoff?"

Then he checked in with his passengers. "Is everyone strapped in?"

She knew she was running late, hence her sprinting for the ship once she was on the pier. No one saw her, at least from within the 401 as it was turned outwards with the rear door closing as she drew near. Luckily the side door was still open, Teyla's boots barely touched the steps as she more or less flew in. The door hissed closed just as she found her way in. Strapping herself in quickly with a reddened embarrassed face, she called ahead to Lorne hearing his words. "We are now Major."

Evan glanced back, made sure Teyla was buckled in, made sure the rear hatch was secure, checked the coordinates.

"Thanks, Tower. Griffin is a go for takeoff."

Then to the rest of the ship, he said, "Please make sure your seats and tray tables are in the upright and locked position. Sit back and enjoy the flight. Today's weather at your destination will be fair to middling, with a dash of intergalactic emergency. We'll have a brief layover at the Mainland before we begin our in-flight entertainment."

"In-flight entertainment?" Maxwell asked.

Evan glanced at him as the ship started to rise. "You can sing, right?"

The taking off part was easy, relatively. With the 401 at low altitude while in the vertical vectoring mode you had to be careful of the downward thrust. The ship's own turbulence had caused many a first timer to come unstuck, with two fatalities already marked up to her early prototype flights. Hence the moniker the 401 had been saddled with in those initial flights as the 'Widow Maker'. Lorne's little airline spiel gave Jordan a decent reason to undo her typical frown, her mouth curving into a half smile. She half wondered given the long flights the 401 was capable of, if in flight entertainment wasn't a bad idea. "Lorne, when we get back, remind me to send a memo back to the SGC to see if we can do something about that."

As luck would have it, Lorne was an excellent pilot having no trouble at all getting the Griffon up. With a quick swing around the city, they headed directly for the mainland. At about 3,000 feet directly above the Athosian village. "Ready Sunniva, Kara?" She called back to the rear compartment.

Sunniva leaned forward to look directly towards the cockpit, she gave Kara a nudge with her elbow, unfastening her belt as she did so. "We're ready." She swallowed hard, for although her race were masters of all kinds of technology, which of course included beaming. She was just a little apprehensive of the skill applied to this small ship. She had nothing to worry about though as Jordan locked onto the two of them.

"In three, two, one." She activated the beaming node, sending the two El'Dari down to the village below in the Asgard beam.

After they were gone she spoke to Lorne again. "It'll take five seconds to spool up the hyper drive, lock in the coordinates now please Major."

Kára followed Sunniva and took her place beside her in a guard position near the exit of the 401. Moments later they reached the coordinates for the beam down. Her leader nudged her causing her to follow suit as they took position. She waited as the beaming took them away from the 401 and to their destination.

Jon nodded at Lorne's comment about him taking the stick on the way back. He'd like that as he took his seat across from the El Dari. Watching them vanish in a beam of light, Jon wondered if he would ever see the El Dari again. Seeing as not many were nearby, it might be awhile before he would see one. It was rare.

The 401 continued on its journey toward the Dreadnought.

Riding in a ship was always fun, unless you felt your life was in danger, which it usually was.
John was satisfied with the answer the tall aliens gave him but he could tell they weren’t entirely fond of him either, perhaps he came off too strong?

Kara, El'Dari Warrior

Kara led the way onto the balcony to speak with the commander. It was a cool breeze outside of the building. She had been inside the base for some time that even fresh air was most satisfying for her. Her long, braided side cut hair was let loose over her shoulder as the breeze brushed it aside. Placing her fingers through her hair, she moved it across her left shoulder and approached the railing.

Placing her hand on the railing, she spoke assuming that Woolsely was behind her, "It is pretty outside. It's nice to be out."

Richard had to speak to several other base staff along the way so he let Kara go on ahead of him. Soon free of the last interruption which was a request for some kind of timeline for the Hermes arrival Richard had to tell them he had no idea and they probably would know before he did.

He took in a deep breath as his feet touched the balcony, the smell of the sea was always an intoxication to him, one he could savor for the rest of his life. "Sunniva has told me she's left you here as the El'Dari Ambassador is that correct?" He asked as he leaned his arms on the railing. "From what I know of you, you're more of the warrior type so I need to ask has your training included diplomatic aims; I'm sure that must have been on her mind when she made the appointment."

Kara, El'Dari warrior

Kara gazed into Woolsey's eyes and offered her slight smile. With a slight shrug, she nodded responding, "Diplomacy comes in many forms, but you are right. I am first and foremost a warrior. However, I do have some training in diplomacy. I will do my best to represent El'Dari interests."

Turning her head to face the buildings and the waters below, she exhaled taking in the cool breeze.

A good start Richard thought to himself. "Very well then Kara, I'll set the wheels in motion to find accommodations for you, after that I will have to look into finding a suitable candidate for a reciprocal arrangement from our side to be sent to your world. Are there any special needs you require as far as food goes? I am sure we can cater to almost any nutritional needs, as we have had people spend time with us from all corners of the Galaxy." He quite frankly had no idea what the El'Dari diet was, not having the opportunity to have dined with them.

Kara, El Dari warrior

Kara listened to him and nodded, "That would be feasible. Thank you. I am sure your mess hall will have what I need." She responded. Remembering back when she explored the base, she noted a mess hall. While she was here, she would try a few human food.  While she was here, Kara started to think where she would stay. A room with a view would be nice. Maybe a small pond where she could dip her toes into. Then, as her warrior drive kicked in, her luxury needs were gone. She only needed a few simple things. Nothing fancy.

Kara inquired, "Is there someone I should go to who will show me where my room is? I need to rest for a bit to gather my thoughts."

<South West Pier>

Since the arrival of the Dreadnought 4 AC401's had been allocated to Atlantis as a permanent Squadron attachment to the city. The Squadron itself had yet to be named or even numbered as that was felt left best up to Colonel Sheppard.

One of those 401's had been the ship used by Commander O'Neil when quite by accident and a decent whack of luck she and her crew had taken out what they now believed to be a Vanir light cruiser. A single small black silhouette was painted under the canopy on the fuselage; the ship itself had been named 'Vulture' and aptly so. Inside the cockpit dangling from a chain above the main panel was a small Killer Whale soft toy. The other 3 ships are now stored in the main PJ hangar.

Sheppard made his way outside, before making his way up the lowered rear ramp of the -401 in question. He took a seat and started powering up the craft to standby levels. That was fairly easy to do. The rest was waiting for Zalenka to arrive so they could initiate the patch in.

Zelenka

He arrived at the 401, it was chilly out there as he ran across to the craft, he shuddered as he climbed aboard it and into the cockpit,  Shepperd was waiting for him.

"Hello Colonel, sorry I took so long, so, we need patch this into the tower ?, this should be no problem"

He unhooked a wire from his tablet, and reaching up he pulled open a panel, squinted into it, and attached the said wire to it.

"Shouldn't take long"

He pushed his glasses along the bridge of his nose as his tablet beeped,  he began to press the buttons on his tablet, his eyes darting around the screen.

"Yes, yes, I think, yes, that is it, give it a try Colonel please"

"Okay, one sec..." Sheppard made some adjustments and cycled through menus on one of the DDIs before flipping the comms to play through the PA system of the craft just to be sure.

At first it was just static, but either there was an atmospheric anomaly or the comms were just that good. Either way, Sheppard wished Zalenka hadn't gotten it right after it started playing...

This is...zzzt....please, we're just carrying women and children, cease fire! WAIT! NO! MERCY PLEASE! zzzzzztttt....

...troops outside the bunker. We are requesting immediate support! They're breaking through the door *explosion* zzzzttttt....

More and more messages started to pipe through at random, but they were all the same. Begging for mercy or help from what was obviously a slaughter. It was the Vanir. Sheppard killed the feed and made a quick adjustment to stop receiving these signals.

"Check in with the control room, make sure they have a solid link. Otherwise, I think you got it." Sheppard said as he stood up and headed out of the rear ramp of the -401. He then tapped his earpiece.

"Woolsey, it's Sheppard. Get down to the hangar, southwest pier. We need to talk. This sitting on our hands waiting for this to blow over stuff isn't going to work." Sheppard said sharply.

Sheppard looked at Zalenka while he waited for a reply from Woolsey, looking clearly agitated and impatient. It was the look he had when he wanted to do something, anything, to help those who were in danger. The look that usually was followed up by some insane plan that somehow worked in the end, usually by cheating death for another day.

"I know. We're going to do something about it. The Vanir are probably spooking us into hiding so they can kill more people. I'm not waiting around, and if that Kara girl can't speak for the El'Dari on this, then I'm going straight to Sunniva." Sheppard said, "Thanks for your help, and I'm sorry."

Sheppard left off, though, that it was going to only get a lot worse until they could turn things around. The Vanir would prove their most difficult opponent yet, worse than even Michael Kenmore...

Zelenka

Zelenka pushed his glasses along the bridge of his nose and looked at Sheppard, he felt a little awkward, but he could see Sheppard was agitated and wanted to try, at least, to help

"It is not your fault, I am sure you would do something if you could, hopefully Mr Woolsey will sanction a mission, if only he could hear those cry's....

Radek stopped and started to play with his tablet

...wait wait, it recorded it, I have it set on record, just in case we miss anything when trying to connect to device, instruments are much more sensitive, can pick up the tiniest thing"

He clicked away and what they heard in the 401 played back, but Radek shut it off before it played in full.  He shuddered and sighed.

"I will leave this with you if you wish, you can get it back to me later and i will erase it"

For a man getting on in years he didn't do too badly for himself and why shouldn't he? The food was now top class, he had a few hundred people much younger than himself around him to keep the motivation going and Richard had to admit, of late he was enjoying the fact that he could keep fit without ridicule from some of his peers.

Just those few minutes he said it'd take him, his feet found the side door of the small Earth borne attack craft, the first time really he had seen one of them so close at hand; he stopped to admire it for a moment, running his hands over the smooth side near the door. Stepping up the four rungs of the ladder he found Sheppard and Doctor Zelenka in the cockpit section to his left. He poked his head in without climbing up further. "I take it from the urgency of your call Colonel something has happened in the last thirty minutes or so?"

"Thanks, Radek." He said, taking the recording. When Woolsey arrived, Sheppard approached him and said nothing as he hit play. He let the transmissions go for a minute or two before turning it off.

"Atmospheric accident when Radek and I adjusted the -401's comms to make a patch through it. But it's clear; the Vanir are parking ships in sensor range because they know our first instinct is to hide and hope they leave." Sheppard explained.

"They want us neutralized so they can go their merry way about slaughtering people. The place we went to, it's abandoned. Completely. The Vanir either abducted or killed them all. Probably took the bodies afterward. We are wasting our time sitting on our freaking hands, waiting for this to blow over." He continued, "Since that Kara gal doesn't seem all that interested in acting as our line to the El'Dari, I'm going around her and straight to them. We didn't do a lot of good for people sitting around on our butts when it was the Wraith or Replicators, and the Vanir are a hell of a lot smarter than either of them."

As the conversation continued between the three, another unexpected transmission came through.

<UNS Rabaul>

 {Commander Edward O'Connel RCN} NPC

"Atlantis, Dreadnought, this is Commander O'Connel of the Rabaul. We are situated on the very edge of the galaxy, our mission completed thus far. What I have to report is not what any of us wanted to believe was possible from any sentient being, let alone relatives of the Asgard. So I will be brief."

"We tracked the fleet as soon as we arrived cloaked, keeping at a range and attitude we left the minimum of evidence of our presence. Currently we are looking at a fleet of twenty seven ships with various smaller attending ships. A count of eight capitol ships, quite large by any standard I'm sending long range images of their make up. Added to that twelve decent cruisers and the rest made up of escorts of varying sizes and two ships that I can only ascertain as troop ships. In the time we've been tracking them they have already razed one populated planet and I'd like permission to return there to search for any survivors."

With his mouth hung open in shock Richard listened to the remnant transmission, water forming in the corner of each eye. "Thank you Doctor Zelenka, that isn't something any of us needed to hear." He looked Sheppard in the eye, the man was right in his evaluation of the situation. "Do it Colonel, we've sat on this far too long as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to appraise the SGC and Colonel-" The man followed what he could hear coming from the cockpit concerning the Rabaul. "-if Captain Radovic agrees tell Commander O'Connell to do so, only if and I stress that, only if it is safe for his ship to proceed. But, we want him back here as soon as possible."

"I'll let Radovic handle this situation as she needs to. In the meantime, I'm going to steal Hanley and that new Sergeant in security. I'd pull more but Teyla and Ronon are needed on the mainland with the Tamorans." Sheppard said.

"Let her know what your orders are, I'm going to take one of these and get to the El'Dari now."

"I'll speak to her shortly Colonel." Too many things to think about, too many concerns to deal with all at the same time. Yet they had to gather every ounce of intelligence possible in as short a time as they could manage. "We need to contact Radim, I'll see to that after I speak with Colonel Radovic- oh and Colonel Sheppard if you're going by ship to the El'Dari you'll need Arctic gear which I think is a waste of time. You can gate there much faster. While you're gone I'll get in touch with the operation on the Mainland and see if we can speed things up. Doctor Zelenka-" He lifted his head up to Radek in the cockpit. "Can you connect me with the Dreadnought from here please."

"Yeah, but the Stargate needs power, and considering Rodney won't let anyone plug in even a toaster, you can call it a waste of time all you want but it's either shut the cloak down and see what happens or take a ship and I lose a few hours in the transit." Sheppard replied. "I'd rather take my chances with flying there, but if you want to roll the dice, that's up to you." His tone implied that he was quite against the latter idea.

"Lieutenant Hanley, Sergeant Lawson, its Sheppard. We're going to be taking a trip. Hanley, I'm going to pick you up and bring you back to Atlantis. Lawson, drop whatever you're doing, gear up for an off-world mission. Pull your gear for Arctic conditions. Hanley, make whatever call you have to for your gear to be ready to change into when we get back." Sheppard said, tapping his earpiece to call up the comms.

"...roger that, sir. You're really running me through the wringer today, sir." Hanley commented.

"I'm aware. But we're all being run through it if it makes you feel any better." Sheppard replied.

Climbing into the cockpit Richard realised that once again he had overlooked the obvious literally. "Yes, thank you Colonel I didn't take that into consideration. All I can say is good luck on the journey and please be careful out there, we both know the high stakes in play here." He took a lungful of air simply because he failed too often to get outside of that tower and see the sun on his face and breathe that rawness of life that came hand in hand with where they were. "I will say this Colonel, meeting Sunniva in her own environment is a world of difference to meeting her here. Be prepared to be overwhelmingly amazed, that's about all I can say. When you arrive you'll be outside their complex, there is a long bridge leading into the city that crosses a frozen river, I think that would be the best place to land and the closest. Be sure to hail them when you break hyper space, they are a touchy lot on protocol."

Next was to get the ball rolling in other spheres of the galaxy. Richard gave Radek a reassuring pat on the arm. "Much appreciated Doctor." The man was efficient and damned irreplaceable in his mind. "Colonel Radovic this is Richard Woolsey. Inform Commander O'Connel he has my blessing but please reiterate to him that we're putting a timeline on his search. If he doesn't find anything within two hours, he is to return here immediately. We don't want to risk things now, with his presence in that sector for longer that necessary." Even two hours was far too long in his mind.

"Doctor Zelenka, what are you doing in the next hour or so?" Richard needed a bigger advantage for the city, he wasn't sure right then and there what it could be but he did have something in mind if they could pull it off.

Whilst waiting for Sheppard's response Richard carried on with what was at hand. "I understand Colonel Radovic, I'll leave my radio open for you." Now he knew John was anxious to be away so he started to leave the cockpit speaking to Radek as he climbed down the stairs.

"Something that I read from old SG1 reports Doctor. During a skirmish with remnant Ori forces back in 2009 decoy drones were deployed from both our ships and the AC-401. Now I know that all of our ships carrying them and I was wondering if it were possible to deploy batches of them in various areas, say near other planets for example, to give the Vanir the impression that we are more of a force than the are reckoning on." He had read that these drones gave off the energy signature of the ship or ships they were deployed from; his reasoning was that this would give the impression they had more numbers than they actually had. It wouldn't work long term, yet it would buy them time as the Vanir went chasing ghosts.

"What?" Radek said wearing that permanent confused look on his face when Woolsey was talking. It did set in and he did remember reading those reports and on the face of it given the abilities they had it felt like a solid plan. It could be done. "Yes, yes I'm sorry I understand what you're getting at. If you arrayed them within the belt of the thermosphere in a geosynchronous orbit that will work and give you the impression you need." He pushed his glasses of his face. "Was there anything else?"

"I think I understand Doctor, in fact I am sure I do." There were times when Richard was totally baffled with science speak, not this time, Radek had made the point quite clear. "We'll head back in now, there is much to be done." As he finished speaking a call came in that while not expected, it was appreciated. "As of now Petty Officer I'm on the piers heading back inside. I'll meet you in the base canteen, I'd like to make an address to as many as possible. Could you ask Amelia to make an announcement to call everyone there; we have a lot to cover and very little time to implement it."

Landing the fighters had been fairly easy, since the position chosen had been intended to support a -304 to land on it, and so it was more than enough room for the two fighters to land. Jack's fighter had remained mercifully stable on final approach. The hardest part was first lining up due to the cloaking field, requiring them to start their approach purely by instrument flying.

A crew was already on the ground to secure the craft for storage, at which point, Jack and AJ were told of the possibility of an attack and required to be armed at all times. This meant they were issued kevlar vests, as well as Jack being given a P90 and AJ taking an M4. They already had their own sidearms, M11s, which was the US Military designation for the SIG Sauer P228.

"What the hell did we just land into?" Jack asked while clipping the PDW to his vest. He was a little uncomfortable with this, he'd undergone advanced weapons training after joining the Program, it was mandatory for just about every member of the military joining these days, but the Navy never put much emphasis on his firearms training. He was qualified with pistols and rifles, but only just, his skillset used weapons on a far larger scale.

"I've no idea, but maybe we can get some answers." AJ replied as she slung the carbine over her shoulder. AJ's Marine Corps service had ensured she'd been better trained with small arms. This was less to do with her career field and more to do with the Marine Corps own institutional mythos of itself. Moreover, she had been sent to numerous field exercises with Marine ground units, as part of a program to better connect the Air Wing with the grunts on the ground and what they went through. Unfortunately, being stationed at Miramar often meant she had to go to Twentynine Palms, where she felt sorry for the Marines sent to that hellhole. It was far better to go to Okinawa while stationed in Japan.

"Well, I am starving, so CAG's prerogative, we're getting something to eat and then we'll report in fully. And somewhere along the way, we'll find out just what the hell is going on around here." Jack said.

"Aye aye, Commander." AJ replied with a smile, pulling herself under Jack's arm for a moment as they walked.

Having brought the Liberty down smoothly with little fuss, Alecia gave Rob a high five, he deserved it. She unbuckled herself from the pilots seat, hung up her helmet before unlocking the seat turn mechanism. "I imagine there will be some kind of debrief with Woolsey and Sheppard, one or both. Most of which will be from Lorne and his team's point of view with us and Hobo adding points where necessary. Most of all I want a decent shower and something proper to eat Rob and do some catching up as I am pretty damn well sure we've missed a lot since we've been gone." Standing she made her way through the back of the cockpit, down the four steps to address AR-2.

"Now we're here Lorne, you guys can lead us off. I don't know where they want us, but I'd say the Gate room might be a good start." She opened the airstair to be greeted by a maintenance crew waiting for them all to disembark.

Rob returned the high five.  Somehow they had all survived and returned in one piece.  It was certainly something to be happy about.   "You're probably right, " he agreed.  Debriefs were the worst in his opinion but he also knew they needed done.  It was the only way to know what was going on.  He laughed a bit.  "A shower would be much appreciated.   And a good hot cup of coffee." Sure they had had some while they waited but now he knew they didn't need to stay on alert.

>>From Cafeteria>>

Jack and AJ's F-302s were still waiting on the pier, and one was quite visually striking, even before the hole was taken into account on the top near the vertical stabilizers.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

The body was a lighter shade of grey and the markings were all much higher visibility. The roundel was red white and blue, all of the USAF markings were replaced with NAVY in black, and the nose number was in orange, along with the tail letters. The edges of the vertical stabilizers bore an orange trim with black accents. To the uninitiated, it was needlessly flashy.  But to those who knew, it was the mark of being the Air Group Commander and Squadron Commander, a mark of pride to stand out among a fleet of low visibility grey and black marked aircraft, a call back to the days when all fighters in the Navy's inventory bore such bright liveries.

"Can't miss the hole, Doctor. It looked to me like it was an energy blast, but much slower moving and a bit bigger than, say, laser cannon fire from a Wraith ship. Kind of followed me but not as accurately as a Drone. I'm going to have my guncam footage pulled and forwarded to you guys as well. But my money says that the Vanir haven't been idle." Jack said, while a ground crew team moved a ladder into place.

"I'll try to answer what I can, but pretty sure there's not much I can say unless you wanted to know the capabilities of their craft and pilots. My wife has a better head for math and science than I do." Jack said a bit sheepishly.
