Title: Southern Regions
Post by: Ellen_Ripley on June 11, 2015, 06:08:48 PM
Far to the south of Foreston, over rugged hills and vast swampy fields, beyond the Cradle Mountains lie the steadings of the Borg Hill tribes. Though not known to be as ruthless or as savage as their Mountain cousins in the North, they number vastly more. There has been no interaction though between the humans of the Cavaleiros for some three hundred years now, a quiet truce between them has existed for that time.

One thing you could say about Bobbie, despite her diminutive size, she had guts. She'd not held back almost a year ago now when she head butted a big lug of a Marine who got foul mouthed in front of her and Kim when they were doing their training for Zulu station and she never flinched when facing down those zombie things just over a day ago. She wasn't about to back away from this either and more so, she had friends. "We'll live. I don't think they will harm us." She nodded at Calis as if she understood. Still whispering. "I am so frakking hungry though...does that surprise anyone?"

Kim managed a smile for her friend. She was getting frustrated with this situation.  Just who did these people think they were?  They had just survived Zulu and Kim had just wanted to relax.  She was tired and frustrated with things right now.  "No, but I'm getting there too," she admitted.

"Not at all sweetheart we barely had anything to eat yet."

She gave a look at the dirty rags and rolled her eyes at the guards.

"Is that supposed to scare me I can chew through that without a problem. I guess you mistook me for an actual lady."

She was still smiling as if it didn't affect her. But she knew the others were getting frustrated. Her stomach made a low growl.

<LA Tel'tak>

{Lucian Alliance} NPC's

The cloaked man made no further comment, he had an unnerving way of completely ignoring those who sought to get under his skin, his only focus being on piloting the small craft as it was buffeted on the winds flying at such a low altitude and low speed to avoid detection.

{Calis Nisk} NPC

Calis, dressed in her long black leather coat, knelt in front of the three girls; she had a khaki pack with her and on opening it, revealed some very earthy MRE packages. "Here, now please be quiet. You will not be harmed but do not test our leader's patience more. He can be very brutal." They were at least bound with their hands in front of them, so eating wouldn't be too difficult.

"True on both accounts." She said and for once Bobbie didn't grumble when the Asian looking woman told them to shut it, added with the incentive of food. Bobbie took one of the packages, sniffed at it, cookies she presumed and ripped the seal off with her teeth as she held it between her bound hands. It was, Scottish shortbread one of her favorites and it made her wonder where they had gotten it. "Thank you." She mumbled as the first biscuit was devoured, then another. Then she handed the pack over to Teya, took another from the bag and gave that to Adrianna, that one smelled of chocolate. "May I ask....how far are we going?" She said at a bare whisper to the woman.

Kim leaned her head back against the metal of the ship.  This was not how the day was supposed to go.  She wrinkled her nose though when the woman showed them she had brought food.  just what was the deal here?  Well, for now she would keep quiet if it would get them more answers.  The smell of the food was enough to make her mouth water.  They hadn't really had a chance to enjoy their meals before this all happened.  "Then why are we bound?" she asked softly.  If they weren't to be harmed then why the restraints?

{Lucian Alliance} NPC's

The bumpy ride continued for sometime until at least you could feel it climb slightly, if the three women could see out, they would notice that the small Tel'tak had began ascending over a mountain range as the terrain following guidance system did its work. That though didn't last long and soon enough it started to descend again rather rapidly. The man at the helm announced. "Three minutes Calis, get them ready now."

As he spoke Maxis the heavy fellow grunted, then went into the far rear of the ship out of sight of the others. There was the noise of equipment being moved about and the heavy breathing as if he might have fitted some type of armor to his body.

{Calis Nisk} NPC

"We've read your files remember? More for our safety than yours you must know that." At her leaders command, Calis began unbinding their ankles, then extended a hand to Kim so she could stand easily. "Help your friends up please, I must be ready when we land."

"I have never even seen my file. I imagine lots of red and black ink."

She was a huge trouble maker so it probably had plenty of disciplinary things in it. She wasn't good at listening sometimes. She watch Kim get untied and Bobby asked how far they were going.

She wanted to know if she could reach something in her back pocket. That and her nose itched. She let Kim help her up. She thought about attempting a mutiny.

She gave both Kim and Bobby a signal asking to see if they wanted to try to take the ship.

"There was always hope." That was something Alex had told her not just a few days ago when their backs were against the wall and this was no different. So, complying with the woman Calis, Bobbie stood when she was helped up, keeping silent and praying at the same time. She didn't have to wait long as she felt the ship land with a small bump. The door at the side slid open and if they thought they were in the poo earlier, they were in for a big surprise now. Out in the gloom, Bobbie could see thousands of torch lights spreading across a wide plain, thousands of them. Her heart sank to her ankles and she almost fainted from the shock.

Kim wasn't sure what was going on, but as soon as her hands were free she moved over to help Bobbie and Adriana up.  Before she got a chance to acknowledge Adriana the ship landed.  Her eyes widened in shock as the door slid open.  What was going on and were they ever going to get out of here alive?

{Lucian Alliance} NPC's

The hooded man settled the ship down, ran the engines into idle before finally switching off the power. Hopefully if all went to plan they wouldn't be needing this useless piece of garbage any longer and he, with his team would be leaving this wastehole in something far more fitting for his station. He urged his two lackeys to herd the three girls out into the oncoming darkness, a darkness lit by the torches of over fifty thousand Southern Borg tribesmen, their former arms of axes, cudgels and spears replaced now with weapons supplied by the Alliance and two solid weeks of constant training with them.

Of course when he and his small group first approached the tribes with their deal, they weren't all that well received, but with a promise for them that they could eliminate the Cavaleiros once and for all, it didn't take much more convincing after that. He himself left the ship and his crew, to seek out the leader of the tribes so that the wheels now could set in motion to carry out their plan. Safe in knowledge that the women could do little with their current circumstances, he left Calis in charge of them.

{Calis Nisk} NPC

There was something odd about the Asian looking woman, something about her manner and bearing, something out of place with this man and his group. She was never rude nor brusque with them, in fact she had gone out of her way to be nice to them. It could be a case of 'good cop, bad cop' and only time would tell which way the pendulum swung. "This way please." She told the three of them, her gun held in a semi threatening way. "I'll take you somewhere you can be safe away from those brutes." Her head tilted over to the left beyond the ship and the gathered tribesmen.

She saw how dark the landing site was. She wondered how safe the Lucian Alliance felt at this moment. She knew quite well that they didn't think they could do much. She let her eyes adjust to the flickering lights. She saw the Borg tribesmen and grinned even wider the usual. It almost looked insane.

"Would you look at that..."

She whispered to the others. They probably knew her grin had to do with being in the tribes territory. She knew they weren't liked at all by them. She was reclaclating there chances now knowing full well that the tribe was not one you could cross and you shouldn't try.

"Dont worry girls. We will get out alive. But I don't think unscathed.Keep your wits about you. They will be needed."

Bobbie chanced a look over her shoulder as the Calis woman led them away from both the ship and the horrid tribesmen, she didn't like what she saw. If she could guess, she'd say somewhere in the vicinity of at least thirty thousand or more, she also knew that wouldn't be the end of it; if this was a prelude to a battle front pointed right at Foreston and the Alpha site, there would be more than that. Bobbie remembered reading once, when she was posted here last time; a battle between the Borg and the humans of the Wold, a battle that lasted months and that story told of hundreds of thousand of Borg against a much smaller force of Cavaleiros and only for their advanced weaponry were they able to prevail. Yet they (the Cavaleiros) had lost almost half their population and all of their major towns...that was two hundred years ago.

"I'm looking and right now I want to puke. Honestly I'm about to lose any wits I had right now." Bobbie had taken her mood from outright fear to anger, but she refused to show it. Adriana was right, if they kept clear heads they might well get out of this before that horrible man's plans came to fruition.

Kim quietly followed her friends off the ship. Right now there wasn't much they could do and if they tried to run they wouldn't get far.  Especially with the hordes of Borg around.  She shuttered as she looked around at how they were surrounded.  "You have got to be kidding me," she groaned as they followed Calis a little ways away from the tribesman.  "First Replicator things and now Borg?" she asked in disgust and disbelief.  She wanted to start the day over again and make sure this didn't happen.  Kim squeezed Bobbie's shoulder.  "We're not letting them take us down," she promised her friend.  "Alex and Michelle will realize we're gone."

{Calis Nisk} NPC

The woman said nothing as she took the three girls upwards to a small tent perched on top of what could only be described as a bump in the relatively flat landscape of the valley. Making sure every now and then that neither none of her Alliance comrades, nor the Borg were following them, she led them into the canvas shelter, checking one more time before closing the flap.

Inside it was bare earth, a table, two chairs and a few odd cushions strewn about and a small lamp. There was a rug of sorts and one small camp cot, a locker which may have food in it and that was it- spartan and hastily erected of course, certainly not meant for longevity. Within a heartbeat of getting them inside she did two things, the first placing a finger to her lips, the second she quickly wrote in the soil with her boot tip. "Major Calista Chang-Lee NID. I'm wired." She left it there long enough for them to read it, scrubbing it out just as fast as she had written it.

"Everyday and new puzzle isn't it Kim?" Bobbie had found something to focus on now, escape and it would certainly seem that the security around them wasn't all that tight, with just one lone woman to watch over them. Fair enough their hands were bound, but that was all and they were in front of them, not behind. It was rather strange to her, to laxed; but then there was this to consider, they had traveled at sub light speed for maybe eight minutes, how far away were they from Foreston? Bobbie calculated in her mind around one thousand kilometers or more, now that might be a problem.

Now they were in a tent, a very smelly one at that with just small oil lamp to see by and not much else in the way of comforts. That didn't bother her much though, it was though something of a oddity to see the woman stop and make letters in the dirt. Right then and there Bobbie's fine eyebrows nearly shot off her head when she turned her head around to read what had been written. "Oh...!" She slapped her hand over her mouth.

When they got to the tent she looked around. It was very far from the Borg tribesmen. She wasn't looking forward to being there prisoner not with the rumors spread about them and torture techniques. She looked at the note and wonder whom the wire was for. She smiled and started to think.

"Too bad we didn't grab the ship before landing. Now it's too dangerous to try."

Kim rolled her eyes.  "Yeah, I could go for a bit of peace for a couple days though," she sighed.  this was just plain ridiculous.  No one should have to go through all this.  She managed to pull here attention away from the Borg though.  they didn't look friendly and she didn't want to meet them.  She followed the others into the tent, her eyes widening in shock as she read the note in the dirt.  She then looked up at Calis, her eyes demanding answers.  Where did they go from here?

{Calis Nisk} NPC

Calsita had to find a way to communicate with them, she didn't want to scrubbing around in the dirt forever. Then she recalled something she had read in one of the files of these girls, she couldn't though remember which one it was. There of course was only one way to find out, so she began making signs with her hands. "Which one of you can understand ASL?" That was one aspect of her training, sign language, it came in handy so often when you needed total silence in communication and she had to communicate with these three.

For a moment there Bobbie thought she and her friends were going to be answering forty questions in the sand, not that she hadn't done anything like that before, the only difference being the last time she played that game she was ten. But there were two things that stood out here, well one mainly; the woman had completely taken them into her confidence in telling them she was NID, in other words she was risking her life as a plant among the Lucian Alliance. That she and they to be precise, had gleaned their files thoroughly told her this was long in the planning, but how did they even know crew from the Zulu station were going to be here? That was a puzzle. Bobbie signed back, her thoughts of Marta her elder sister sharp in her mind. "That would be me. May I ask, are you the good NID or the bad bunch?" There was no harm in asking that, of course her friends would be lost in translation, so she whispered to them exactly what was going on.

She recognized what Calis was doing but she herself didn't progress very far in ESL classes so she switched to some other language. She knew some military protocols in ESL but not much more. She was versed in Morse code which is probably easier for the alliance to listen in. However Bobbie knew what was being said she nodded and then pressed her lips together and placed one finger on her lips indicating that the wire could pick up whispering.

"So now what? Death and injury? Is us being held hostage a lie to kill us here?"

She really did not wish to blow the girls cover. It would end badly.

{Calis Nisk} NPC

"I work for Malcolm Barrett, one of your own Catherine Hughes knows me well, as does the CIA agent Sydney Bristow. Good enough for you?" She signed again, her fine features showing no reflection of a lie.

Beyond the small tent there was movement, large formations of troops assembling far beyond the canyon, the sound of both machinery and the harsh tongue of the Borg, mixed with the shouts of Alliance humans. Calsita motioned them further back into the tent away from the flap. "That raid the LA carried out on your Alpha site the other day was a ruse merely to get themselves in a position down here. They had been in contact with these brutes for sometime now, each attack they made on your base was a cover for them to put their people down here. They are planning an attack on Earth via the SGC and through the Alpha site. I've been working inside their ranks now for over a year." She explained rather painfully, she had the scars to prove it.

She felt like screaming. She was quite frustrated with what was going on. Mostly because Morse code could probably be picked up by the alliance. She had trouble deciphering what was being said. Robyn's translation was hard to understand. Why wasn't the new attack being sabotaged as soon as they could. Maybe because it would fail even if it got through. It suddenly made sense why they were kidnapped.

{Major Calista Chang-Lee} NPC

Seeing the anguish on the other two girls faces not to mention Hatfield's reaction made Calista feel sick to the stomach. She wished she could have done something to prevent all of this occurring or even getting as advanced as it had, yet she couldn't even save her own teammates who had died at the hands of the LA on the very first day they had infiltrated Lucia and only by luck she herself had escaped and managed to create a new identity among them. It was brutal and hard, she still bore the mental scars of those months she had to endure. Once again she signed to Robyn. "This army of Borg move very fast and they will do so at night. When the sun sets they will march all night till just before sunup and then camp again. By the end of the week they will be close to Foreston, yet 'he' won't show his hand until he knows the Dreadnought and Guadalcanal have left for Atlantis." Her mind was aching knowing what may come of all this. "There is a mole in the Alpha Site." That was the last she gave them, harsh voices were approaching the tent, Calista made shooing motions to the girls for them to sit by the canvas wall, looking like to captives they were.

"Girls this is bad, like read bad. This army is marching on both Foreston and the Alpha site, they are going to attack Earth from here. Kim's eyes widened when Bobbie told them what was going on.  No, no way was she letting that happen.  "We'll figure something or go down swinging," she growled.  She was not going to let those monsters near her home as long as there was still breath in her.  She just hoped that they were able to accomplish something to help the others out before the Borg were able to do any real damage.

Her mind began to whirl. She had started to think really hard about something. Usually she used her plots for harmless pranks but even those had the same finesse as tactic plan. {Major Calista Chang-Lee} NPC

The sounds and noise from out in the valley grew louder and more violent, voices were raised, some in alarm some in fear and panic and those were the human voices. A huge explosion rocked the ground sending dust and debris flying in every direction, shaking the very earth to its core. Maxim, covered in dust and blood staggered into the tent, you could see fires and flame behind him as he fell. His voice harsh he spoke raggedly. "Run Cali, run. The Borg have re..have revolted." His last gasp as his head hit the dirt. What he didn't and wasn't able to say, was that Lorax the dark cloaked man had not ten minutes ago found out that Lucia had fallen to an unknown enemy. He was speaking with Maxim and three others of their group, unwittingly he was overheard by the leader of the Borg; with now no support from home, the LA here were on their own with Lorax telling his men and women they should leave. That was his end, the Borg leader slew him then and there. Calista's face was white, she turned to the captives about to speak when a staff blast took her in the back.

Down in the valley, the one and only escape route, the small Tel'tak ship was ablaze, Borg soldiers were like flies on a carcass everywhere. Calista struggled as more loud hails drew closer to the tent. "Take my knife and gun, behind this tent is a weapons cache and clothes. Go, run north as fast as you can." Her breath came in fits and starts, the burn from the blast in her back was fatal.

You didn't need much of a hint to know what was going down, not only could Bobbie see it with tear stained eyes, she could smell it and hear it, death and destruction on a large scale. Even though she was hurting, her shoulder burning like hell she wasted no time in taking charge, even if she was the junior officer to Adriana, she was quite possibly more experienced in ground combat and dire situations: of course they'd soon find out if that were true.

She ran to Calista's side, knelt close by to feel the woman's pulse by the neck, then slowly shook her head at her friends. There wasn't anything they could do for her, she was gone. Bobbie took the knife in silence, went to the rear of the tent making a long slice down the canvas, in the gloom outside she could see the other small shelter which was obviously the weapons store the woman spoke of. "Come on, if we're to live, we have to hurry." She slipped out, not before tipping over the oil lamp behind her, soon flames started spreading across the floor.

The weapons cache was some ten meters up a little hill, Bobbe made it in an awkward sprint, slipping once or twice. When she got there, she crouched down behind some large crates to wait for her companions, all the while she was praying and begging God to spare them.

Kim could hear the shouts and she wasn't surprised when the man ran in telling them of the danger.  The loss of Cali though was heart breaking.  She had suffered enough loss recently and this one didn't settle well with her.  Bobbie was right though they had to move.

Kim took off after her friend, figuring Adriana was behind them.  She winced as a blast burned get upper arm, but she wasn't letting that stop her.  She hadn't survived those wretched replicators just to die by the hand of the Borg.  She slid down beside Bobbie.  "We gotta find a way out of here."

Somewhere way up above there had to be a guardian angel watching over them, Bobbie felt that for what each of them had been through they deserved to live, they deserved a break; yet she couldn't very well shout that out as she wanted to do. "North, that's my only guess Kim. I had an inkling we went south and feeling as cold as it is here now tells me that is where we are. How far I have no idea but given the flight time and speed of the Tel'tak, I'd say at least a thousand kays, if not more." If they weren't so ill disposed they could bet on ten days travel time, the problem is, they'd need to eat and shelter, and that would make it longer. Their best hope was to be found by Cavaleiros patrols, Bobbie knew they ranged out far so that was a hope to hold onto. "Grab everything we can carry, then I'll rig a charge to blow this stuff after we've left." She'd already had one crate open, it was full of their own weapons and gear, including back packs.

Kim hated this.  they still didn't know exactly why the three of them had been taken and now the Borg were revolting.  If they got out of this in one piece it would be a miracle.  "Perfect.  I'm never wearing a skirt again," she grumbled.  Right now she would love to have her jeans and hiking boots back.  Well, couldn't change that now.  Right now they needed to get to safety.  'Got it."  She grabbed up a backpack and started to stuff things inside.  They needed to move quickly if they didn't want to get caught.  She just prayed they would be found by friends before long as none of them were really prepared for a trek like this.

{Adriana} NPC

Effectively as usual, Adri took the six, she simply wanted to make sure they'd not been seen by the Borg and so far so good. She caught up to her friends quickly, joining in the rummaging through the LA stuff. If they could see her eyes they would have noticed how wide they were. "Girls look, clothes...proper clothes and boots. Its all our stuff, I mean not ours technically, but SGC issue, makes you wonder about those plans of theirs doesn't it." It bothered her deeply if the LA had pulled it off.

All Bobbie could do was swear under her breath about skirts, dresses and boots with heels on them, she had to agree with Kim completely that for a very long time, no matter how much she yearned for something pretty, she wouldn't be seen out or either uniform or battle dress. "Or stockings, or anything with lace." She lamented. When Adriana finally caught up revealing her little find, that did a whole bunch of morale boosting for Bobbie. "Jesus....look at this stuff." She said when she moved over to that crate. There was every option and plenty of it, fit for both genders as well. "They must have been planning something big, which makes me wonder just how many LA were down there when the Borg went berserk, must have been hundreds at least." She counted at least a dozen crates the same as the one they were looking at. "Okay, as quick as we can, find what we need, so long as it fits and something warm especially. We'll move up further, I can see a small rock overhang up there, that could be safe for us to change." It might also be a cave and home to something worse than the Borg.

Kim did smile slightly at Bobbie's ranting.  Neither one of them had chosen wisely for a day like this.  She nearly hugged Adriana when the other woman pointed out the clothing, but then frowned.  'I don't like this at all.  It doesn't sit well with me.  I agree Bobbie, they were planning something big.  But will the borg still try to carry that out now that they revolted?"  That's what worried her.  Kim snagged up a handful of clothes and moved with Bobbie so they could get changed.  They needed to get moving again if they had any hopes of being found.

{Adriana} NPC

Finding the right things wasn't easy in the semi dark, you had to go by both instinct and feel for the most part, except the boots, Adri at least could see the sizes on the tongue which made that part easy. For clothes she chose a set of black BDU's, complete with SG4 patches which made her curious, how in hell were they going to pull that off, everyone connected with the Stargate Program knew exactly who that team was and exactly who was on it. Unless? The thought chilled her that the LA might have had access to old Baal's cloning set up. She went then directly up to where Bobbie indicated first, then once there a quick scan and she called back to them quietly. "Clear." She dropped her bundle on the ground, complete with M4 a side arm and ammo and a few grenades.

"I hope maybe without the LA leadership they might think twice about it. But Ive been here twice now and I know the Borg at times just like to launch a quick raid simply because they could. Never amounted to anything and never with more than a few dozen. This.." She pointed down the hill to the fire lights. "....this is unprecedented." She set about planting a few claymores with proximity switches and a few packest of C4 as well she had found. With that done she grabbed her own selections pretty much as Adriana did and then headed up the hill. Once there she stripped as fast as she could, not wanting to be caught by anyone semi naked as it were, plus it was freezing.

Kim could deal with the pants or shirt being big.  She didn't care as long as it was pants and she had boots that fit.  Once she had her cache she moved up with the others, not liking what she had seen on some of the uniforms.  Just how had the Borg gotten their hands on SG4 patches?  That didn't sit well with her.  She wanted to get back to the others and tell Alex.  She also couldn't help but think about Michelle and Alex and wonder how they were.  "Perfect.  Now they decide to band together," she groaned as she quickly got changed.  She didn't know how much running they would need to do, but she wanted to be prepared.  "Everyone set?  The sooner we move out of here the better."

As she was dressing, Bobbie had a partially unbuttoned shirt over head, she keep up the conversation. "Chalmers gave everyone a lecture back then, a very long lecture. She told us all about the tribal organisation of these guys....ouch..." She pulled her shoulder again, touching it and Bobbie found it was wet.  There wasn't much she could do, just pray it didn't get infected. "... the southern tribes consist of about thirty or so family groups, or those related by family at least. At the last count which I might add was over two years ago, there were roughly two hundred thousand and they are supposed to be the less aggressive of the Borg." Almost finished, she sat on a rock to do up her boots, luckily the socks she found were clean; well she did sniff at them. "Imagine if all three groups joined together? The Plainsmen are the biggest group, maybe three times the size of the Southern tribes." Bobbie shuddered to think how the Cavaleiros coped, a census taken of them four years ago put their number at around six hundred thousand; the thought was scary. "Right I'm set, we ready? Of course we are." She did at least make some kind of smile.

The backpack was annoying, it took her a good five minutes to get the straps so it didn't rub on her shoulder, that was just so inconvenient. "I remember my grandad singing 'North to Alaska' when I was a kid, we won't make it there, nor will we get rich, but we will live." She started the uphill climb into the lower mountains, this was going to be the hardest part.

Kim pulled her boots on, her own shoulder a bit sore after being slammed by the gun.  Although she hadn't take as much of a beating as Bobbie had when they were on Zulu.  She really just wanted to go home and not think about any of this for at least a week.  Kim pulled a face at Bobbie's words.  "You've got to be kidding.  How are we supposed to stand up to that number if they do decide to band together?"  She had heard of the Borg, but she didn't know much about them except that they were fierce and didn't care who they took out.

Kim grabbed up her own pack and started to pull the straps tight.  This could be a long hike.  She just prayed they would be found by friendlies and could get back to the base.  "You guys didn't by chance see a radio in all this mess that we could use to get in touch with Alpha Site?"  It would make things a bit easier.  Of course they would still have the walk and who knew what else they would run into along the way.  "Hey, I'll just be happy to get out of here."

There was a few disgusted grunts that came from the tiny woman, you would have not been mistaken if you had thought her a sailor such was the colourful language she used. Twice now since Bobbie started leading them upwards she had to adjust the left side strap of the pack, Kims proclamation concerning the Borg didn't help her mood either. "It'd be easy if the stubborn arsed Cavaleiros allowed us just to fry the Borg from space; no more problem. But you know what that uppity leader of theirs said to Chalmers once Kim? It was their fight and they must do it with honour. Honour be damned, those guys just wanna plunder, rape, pillage and destroy, you can't reason with a wild animal." She was even more furious now thinking about it, so much so it made her walk harder. "Radios...sh*t no, I didn't even look."

Right there and then she thought of turning back, if not for the loud explosion that rocked the ground under her feet. Bobbie turned quickly to see the trees below where they had just left illuminated by fire. Her booby traps had gone off. "We'd better move it." With her head down she bent to the task, climbing ever upwards.

Kim hadn't seen Bobbie this mad in quite some time.  Of course she herself had never stayed at the Alpha Site, so she didn't know the things that Bobbie had experienced.  A frown marred her brow as she picked up her pace to keep up with Bobbie.  "You've got to be kidding.  I mean I'm all for giving someone a chance, but it seems like the Borg won't ever change."  It sounded like all they wanted was pure mayhem and death.  Perfect, just perfect.  She shrugged a shoulder.  "Can't change it now.  I don't think of any of us thought about the possibility of a radio."  It hadn't been the first thing on her mind.

She glanced over her shoulder as the ground rocked under her feet.  "Oh shoot," she grumbled.  That meant those monsters were getting close.  "We've gotta find help soon," she spoke the obvious.  Otherwise they could all be done for.

*approximate altitude 12,000 feet*

If the girls thought they were cold before down in the valley, they were in for a big surprise as just like back at home, even in the tropics like Indonesia, once you get above 10,000 feet or so you can expect frost. Get up to 12,000 and you will have snow and ice and that is exactly where they were heading now. For over an hour they trudged on, with their breathing becoming labored and difficult, each step painful and exhausting. Finally as Bobbie winced once again in pain she called a halt. "Girls, I don't know about you two, but right now I'm so cold I feel like a popsicle and my feet are killing me to. Do you think either of you we've been followed..no don't answer that."

They knew very well they weren't, taking it in turns to run back every ten minutes and wait; that tactic was another factor in the exhaustion. "We need to camp, we'll have no light soon anyway and I don't fancy walking in these mountains in the dark. We can eat and see what the morning brings and hopefully we had enough sense to pack some warm stuff, I can't even remember what I threw in my pack. Kim, I know one thing, once we cross this range we should be in Cavaleiros territory, there is that hope we'll find a farm." Trying to be reassuring under these circumstances was something at least.

It was bitterly cold, well below zero with a westerly wind blowing light snow across the mountain top. The girls could go no further as they sheltered in a small cave or more correctly an overhang in the rock face that was at least deep enough to give them some protection. The last thing though they needed right now was to fall asleep, yet that is exactly what they did, huddled together for warmth with Bobby being the smallest in the middle. They had packed everything around them they could, packs, extra clothing etc, just to provide a little more.

Kim woke up shivering.  She hadn't realized it was possible to be this cold.  Sure, she had been on Zulu and there had been times it had gotten chilly, but nothing like this.  She gently nudged Bobbie's and Adriana's shoulders.  "Time to wake up," she whispered, her voice sounding hoarse.  She felt a bit sick and prayed that they would find that farm that Bobbie had mentioned the night before.  Actually she would just be happy to see people.  They needed help.  One more day like the previous day and she didn't know if they would survive it or not.  They were ill prepared for this type of adventure.

Somewhere in Bobbie's dreams she was on a beach back home with that cute guy from the panel shop, the one who fixed her little Datsun so many times. It wasn't that Bobbie was a bad driver, she just apparently was one of those people plagued with bad luck, having been either rear ended multiple times or side swiped once or twice. He was incredibly nice, not only to look at, his manners were impeccable to with a nice sense of humor, he was the the type of man many women dreamed of and that was exactly what she was doing when she felt someone shaking her. "What?" She said wearily, Bobbie was freezing to the bone, she'd never felt so cold. Nudging Adriana brought no response either no matter how hard she tried, then panic set in. "Kim, Adriana is unconscious...and I....I'm barely awake to. We need heat badly, we need to make a fire if we can." There was no way they could even think of moving right now.

Kim sat back on her heels, shivering badly.  She normally like the cold, but this was insane.  "Oh no," she groaned, getting to her feet.  "I'll see if I can get some wood.'  She staggered to unsteady feet, wrapping her arms around her waist to warm up.  "Stay with Adriana.  I'll be back."  She staggered toward the woods to find some dry branches.  They didn't have much time.

Watching her best friend drag herself out into the snow and wind was agonising for Bobbie, she wished she could do more to help but as it was, she felt barely alive herself; her breathing was hard and heavy, as if there wasn't enough air to be had and what she did breathe in and out hurt. She tried once again to wake Adriana without success and soon slumped back into a cold induced sleep herself.

Kim was shivering badly as she stepped into the snow.  She couldn't keep going like this.  Her body was failing on her, but she had to get back to her friends.  Kim dug in the snow drift, finally managing to find a few branches.  She tugged and pulled with all her might, soon loosing her balance and tumbling back into the snow.  She groaned softly as she picked herself back up, now completely covered in snow.  The young woman shivered and collapsed again, her energy spent.  "Just a few seconds to catch my breath," she mumbled before slowly giving into the sleep that kept tugging at her.

If it were the first time or the millionth time, it never ceased to give you a buzz in the 401, as not only was it a dream to fly both in combat or just tooling around, the take off and atmo re-entry was simply astounding. (Cate refused to use the word amazing in this context, she'd feel like a seventeen year old if she did)

"You guys okay?" She shouted over her coms, the noise from the air flow outside threatened to explode your ears, even with all the protection you had. Taking off from the Dread was exciting as you launched at over seven G's, with all your internals pushed back into the seat. Coming into a planet was even more so as the exterior of the ship came in like a burning comet and if it weren't for the shields, that is exactly what they would be.

Finally she was able to settle the bird into a smooth flight over the frozen alps of the south, now they needed to find the girls. "Cass, get on that spectrometer, see if you can pick up that titanium trace again, Lieutenant, jump into the co-pilots seat, you can do a thermal sweep from there."

William gave a thumbs up, even if Cate couldn't see it.
"Yes ma'am. I've been jumping out of airplanes for most of my career, the adrenaline rush never gets old. For much of my career I've also been on standby during shuttle launches should they need to bail out. I've often wondered what that must feel like, now I have a good approximation."

Once things settled down, William slid over to the co-pilots seat to try using the thermal sensor. He was unfamiliar with the controls, but after some trial and error figured it out.
"Do you know about where the titanium trace was located? Might be a good place to start the thermal sweeps?"

Cass definitely enjoyed the ride, her bones and her brain felt like jelly after the adrenaline left her body. It took her a moment and she shook her head to get feeling back. "On it Cate!" She turned on her monitor and began looking for the titanium signature. The frozen environment, was much more real this close to the surface and she suddenly felt a huge sense of urgency. She couldn't see how anything could be living out in this frozen wasteland. She made a few adjustments to try to hone the sensors to detect the tiny titanium signature. Cass saw something but wasn't completely sure.

"Cate I think I see something at the summit of that mountain, on your 3 o'clock, could you head that direction so I can check, please? Troy, you see that mountain, could you check the thermal readings in that direction? I can see a slight reading , but I can't see how high up it might be."

"It does get better Lieutenant believe me. Wait until you experience one of these in combat, in space!" The rush of that, even the mere thought of it turned any jet jockey pail on their first time. Yet you got over it soon enough and simply became addicted to it. "Stand by."

Fortunately the view from the front of the AC401 was glorious, not to mention the huge HUD display, Cate zeroed in on the target Cass had pointed out for her and as sure as eggs make chickens she had a bead on the top of the particular mountain. It looked small from here but as she drew closer she could see a reasonable spot to land; there were trees of course, there was always trees. But amid that, there was also a large flat space just big enough for the aircraft. She leveled out at the same height, set the bird into hover and it just sat there, nose pointed at the mountain top. "Go for it Cass, you should be able to pick up the fillings in their teeth. The second you have a contact, I'll set down."

Troy looked at the terrain pointed out by the scientist.
"Good eye ma'am. The area is slightly sheltered from the wind, which is important in a situation such as this. Let's hope our missing people remembered that from their survival training."

He had only skimmed the medical records of the 3 missing members, but knew they had some military experience. Even if they didn't have formal training, hopefully common sense would tell them to try and get out of the elements.

Focusing on the surrounding area, William looked for any sign of heat against the cold snow.
"I think I found something, actually make that 2 somethings. One is underneath what appears to be an overhang, and the other's a few feet away from that."

Cass tweaked the settings on her display here and there and was able to fine tune them. She saw the titanium very clearly and looked up through from the screen out into the real world and was dazzled at first, then suddenly overwhelmed by the sheer height of the mountain in front of her. She couldn't imagine how cold and high up that little blip on her screen could be in real life! "Up there about 3/4 of the way up the mountain. Looks like there is a little alcove, there is a very distinct titanium signature coming through. I have no idea how they got up there, but between the cold, the altitude and the sheer exhaustion from the climb I truly hope we aren't too late. Are you picking up any kind of heat Troy?"

Cate didn't waste time on talking. She rotated the 401 so its rear end faced the escarpment then gently set the heavy aircraft down in a billowing and flurry of snow, that for several moments completely enshrouded the craft. "Right guys..." She said as she unstrapped herself, then removed her helmet. "Suit up, I won't open that.." Her hand pointing rearwards through the cargo bay to the rear ramp door. "Until we're fully protected. No sense in us freezing to, I just want to see our job done and have our girls safely aboard, time is of the essence here."

Cass didn't need to be asked more than once. The cold weather was something she did not want to encounter under-dressed! She unbuckled her restraints and hopped out of her seat. She began systematically getting her winter gear on. She was going quickly but very carefully, she knew that if she even missed a button or a zipper was partway down she could be looking at frostbite or worse very quickly in these type of conditions.

As soon as the dropship touched down on the side of the mountain, William was out of his seat and heading towards the duffel bag with his cold weather gear. For sake of time & modesty he was already wearing compression leggings under his flight suit.
The base layer was topped off with an insulated shirt much like the leggings and a pair of smart wool socks. The mid layer was a fleece track suit and a cold weather balaclava. The final layer was a pair of snow pants and an insulated parka. While the red color wasn't what you would expect from military gear, in this operation he was more concerned about viability than staying hidden.

Lacing up his boots, William addressed the rescue operation.
"My recommendation is to get them inside the craft as quickly as possible. Once inside, we should get them into some warm, dry clothing. I snagged several pairs of long johns for that very purpose. If they are conscious, we should start pushing fluids. The galley provided several thermoses of peppermint tea. If they aren't conscious, then I shall start IVs and run them through a warmer. Considering we're only a few minutes away from the Dreadnought, we just need to get our people stabilized. The medical staff on the ship will take over from there."

Grabbing a small med kit and 2 portable stretchers, the medic put up the hood of his jacket before donning the googles and gloves.
"Ready when you are."

Foregoing any real sense of modesty (not there was all that much to see anyway) Cate stripped off her flight suit to reveal a very lovely set of pale blue thermal underwear, top and bottom; by unzipping the legs of the suit she was able to remove it without taking off her boots, which in turn made her look rather ridiculous for a moment. She then went to her tote bag, pulling out two ski pullovers, a pair of lightweight ski pants and finally over the top of that she slipped on an air force issue white arctic suit complete with faux fir lined hood and very thick gloves. "Time is of the essence here so we need to be a quick as we can. Every minute we have them exposed takes the dangers for them up a notch. Lieutenant, I'll follow your lead on this one Cass.." Cate pulled an M4a2 off the rack, handing over to her, she retrieved another for herself. "You never know." She said simply then hit the big red button to open the door. Snow almost filled the rear compartment instantly. "Move out!"

Cass took the gun, she had had all the training needed to handle the weapon but she was still far from comfortable toting it around. She strapped it on over her winter gear and let it hang. She wanted to pretend it was just a purse, but she knew that she needed to be aware of the weapon at all times and be ready to use it. She tried to put her mind into a state of readiness as she has been trained to do.

Cass braced herself for the cold as the door opened and she was not disappointed! The freezing cold air entered the rear door and she immediately choked as it froze in her throat despite having her face covered. She exhaled and took more shallow breaths, hoping nobody noticed. She set foot out into the cold and got her footing and turned to take in her surroundings and her team.

Stepping off the back ramps of the landing-craft, William squinted from the sun reflecting off the snow. The goggles were tinted, but it still took him a minute to adjust to the conditions. Pulling out a compass, the medic soon got his bearings.

"Nice landing Squadron leader, our people should be a few meters to our left. Just over that ridge. As we each are carrying a stretcher, the plan is fairly simple. Once we reach them, we will each load one person into our stretcher. The stretchers are fairly easy to use, but let me know if you have any trouble with them. Once loaded up, cover the person in a regular blanket sandwiched between 2 space blankets. That way the blanket doesn't soak up any moisture and we can prevent any additional snow from getting on them. Not that I expect any more snow, but better safe than sorry. After that, get your person back to the ship and in some warm and dry clothing. If they are awake, have them start sipping some tea. Any questions, feel free to ask."

Normally he would do a quick assessment on the person before moving them but William knew there would be little use to try and work on someone outside in sub-zero temps.

Raising his rifle, William set out with the 2 ladies following close behind in a small version of the wedge formation. Having placed a thermal scope on the rifle, it allowed him to better locate the missing people while not impairing any defense actions he may have to take.

It took the team a few minutes to reach the ridge, but once they crested the top a small rock outcropping could be seen.
"Keep your eyes pealed, our people should be here somewhere."

Reaching into a front pocket, William pulled out an electronic whistle, he pressed the button 3 times in the universal signal for distress. If anyone was somewhat awake, hopefully the whistle would let them know help had arrived.

Being the last out, Cate took with her the ships remote; it wasn't practical for her to close the ramp, so as that had been foreseen by the makers, the ships shields could be activated simply to keep weather out, a touch of a button on their return and they would walk straight back in. Better than waiting the 90 seconds it took to lower the ramp again. "Thanks elTee, I think I'm getting the hang of it." That was typical Aussie sarcasm with a grin.

She listened to William intently, this was his turf and there was no way she was going to screw her part up. Now standing next to Cass with her own little stretcher dragging behind, fur surrounding her face, she nudged her friend. "He's shaping up okay for a guy isn't he?" Then she trudged on, the glare of the white snow could blind you if not for their goggles.

Soon after, Cate came to an outcrop of rock, within there seemed to be a pile of bags and other things heaped up on something, which looked for all the world like a Salvation army clothing dump. "I've got two!" She called out loudly as she realised there were bodies under that mess.

Voices?  Were they really voices?  No, couldn't be.  It was subszero.  No one would be out in this.  But the voices just continued to nag her.  "Help!" she tried to croak out, but the cold had gotten to her.  She could barely feel her limbs anymore and she wasn't sure if she could even move.

There were two people next to the outcropping, which still left one person unaccounted for. While the ladies started working on who had been found, William surveyed the terrain looking for the 3rd member. Thankfully it didn't take long, as a person laying in the snow stood out against the rest of the scenery.

"I've got the third!"

As he arrived where Kimberly was laying in the snow, William knelt down beside her.
"I'm Lt Troy, US Air Force search and rescue. If you can hear me, I'm going to get you onto a stretcher and back to the dropship for transport to the Dreadnought. You'll be warm and dry in no time."

Unrolling the stretcher, he grabbed the back of the Sergeant's shirt and drug her onto it. Before securing the buckles, he wrapped Kimberly in blankets.
"Hang on, I'm going to have to pull you back to the ship."

Cass listened intently to Troy, he was an intense soldier, more "soldier like" then she expected, but he definitely brought something needed to the team. His instructions were simple but instantly became complicated by the conditions that were already beginning to wear on her. She was thrilled to hear Cate say she found 2 of the missing. She followed Cate over to the pile of gear. Cass could barely tell there were even people in there. Cate began loading one of the women onto her stretcher and Cass did the same. She wasn't sure if the woman she was handling was conscious, or even alive but she felt like she should say something since she was moving someone else's body. " Cassandra Thomas from the US Air Force, I'm going to move you onto this stretcher and drag you back to somewhere warm, how's that sound?" Cass didn't wait for a response but was quickly moving. At this point she was relieved to hear Troy's shouts of confirmation of discovery of the last missing member of the team. Cass was stronger than she looked thanks to the intense workouts she had been doing to prepare for going off world. She loaded the mostly limp and rather heavy body onto the stretcher and wrapped her in the layered blankets as the lieutenant had instructed. After securing her into place she rearranged her weapon in order to get a better grip on the stretcher. She was ready to and get back into the warmth of the ship herself. She looked over at Cate for confirmation of departure. "Ready when you are Commander."

{Flt Lieutenant Bobbie Hatfield} NPC

Getting the girls onto the stretchers was easier than Cate thought it would be, they had found at least the two in the cavern were partially conscious to some degree. Cass had drawn the lucky straw to, in having picked up the smallest of them in Bobbie, Cate had the older woman Adriana, the Dreadnought's CAG. She was puzzled to say the least as to how this one in particular was out here with the other two, guessing that they must have met up last night in town.

"Robyn- Bobbie Hatfield." She corrected herself, not even her family called her by her given name. Her eyes of course were only half open, snow blinded for the better part but she'd get over that soon enough. Even talking was an extreme effort for her, she felt as if her entire body was simply one large frozen mass. "How, how are the others?" She asked, the voice a mere rasp.

Cate was by the other woman's side, kneeling for the moment her hand on the side of the neck. She was alive at least but only just, not something that Cate wanted to give any indication to at the present. "Adriana will be fine." Quite possibly a lie, but it was the best she could do. "I'm good Cass. Troy how you doing?" Cate fiddled with the radio, which proved difficult with her thick gloves on. While she waited for a reply, she wrapped Adriana up as warmly as possible with the blankets and a few extra pieces she found in their baggage.

William had just finished loading his patient and was prepping to return to the dropship when his team mate radioed for an update.

"I'm good here. Let's get these ladies out of the elements.

Attaching the tow straps for the stretcher, William carefully set off towards the waiting craft.

Kim continued to shiver as her teeth chattered.  She had been out in the snow too long and her body felt numb.  "Kim...Paine," she managed to get out between chattering teeth.  She barely nodded as Troy pulled her onto the stretcher.  She wouldn't have been able to help even if he had needed it.  The young woman was barely staying away and snow coated her eye lashes and her lips were turning a light blue.  "Bobbie?" she managed to ask about her friend.  'And...Adriana?"  She had been trying to get fire wood to warm them up, but had never made it back to them.  Were her friends still alive?

"On my way Troy." She replied and once again Cate bent to feel at Adriana's neck, her concern was the woman's colour which was going from blue to ashen grey. She needn't have bothered though, there wasn't anything for her to detect, no a murmur, no pulse whatsoever, nothing at all. Pulling the blanket completely over the face, a long sigh escaped from Catherine's mouth, this wasn't going to be happy news for any of them, especially Elle. She could just faintly hear the voice of the third woman Kim over Troy's radio, for a moment she didn't know how to respond then she had an idea. "Lieutenant I heard the Sergeant. Tell her that Hatfield is okay, Croumer though, just lie for the moment. I'm going to ask Captain Forster if we can borrow the ships stasis chamber as this poor woman is essentially a popsicle now, so it is quite possible we might be able to play the hand of god." It was a long stretch of course, though Cate had seen some fairly radical things since she'd been with the Program.

Outside it began snowing again, a light powdery snow which wasn't a huge problem for the moment, just an inconvenience. "Cass you should follow in my trail, it'll be easier for you that way." As she spoke, Catherine began hauling the lifeless body of Adriana back to the 401, not one of her most pleasant duties she'd performed in her career.

Cass was grateful for the trail, she was already getting cold and tired. The stretchers were very light and easy to use, even dragging a person. She was worried about the women, but she tried hard to focus on the task at hand. She followed Cate to ship and they climbed into the warmth of the ship. They began to unload the women. The woman Cate had recovered was in bad shape, really bad shape. The woman Cass had dragged in was in better shape but not by much.

William didn't like lying to patients, but at the same time wasn't about to tell the woman her teammate was likely dead. Keeping his response vague, he keyed the radio.
"Roger that, I'll let you make the request once we get back to the dropship."

Now was the task of reassuring his patient that her comrades would survive.
"Ma'am, let us worry about the others. We have rescued all three, and will soon have you all on-board the Dreadnought with state of the art medical care."

Even without Stargate level medical tech, people somehow managed to survive longer in the cold than in the heat which lead to the interest in cryogenics. Hopefully the same would hold true in this case.

Kim coughed a bit as she snuggled down deeper into the blankets Troy had wrapped around her.  She really wanted to ask more about her friends, but what little strength she had left was draining fast.  'okay," was all she managed to say as she fought to stay awake.  She didn't want to lose consciousness again.  Help might be there, but one never knew what else could happen.

<AC401 Bald Eagle to Dreadnought>>

Cate wasn't one to worry over much about anything, even death never bothered her so much as she had seen more than her fair share of it. But right now she knew the mental state of the others was paramount and if they were to survive on that score the needed to be treated with cotton wool. The instant all were aboard, she set the heaters on full, effectively almost making the interior of the dropship almost as if it were a sauna. She then stripped off her arctic wear then once again knelt by Croumer's side; there was a pulse, barely and this was going to be touch and go. "I'll prep for launch, then radio the Alpha site with some good news at least." She raised the ramp once more, then headed for the cockpit to go through the standard routine. When that was done, before dust off she called the alpha site with a brief message. "Alpha site this is Bald Eagle. Three birds safely in hand." That was all she needed to say.

Entering the craft, William quickly stripped down to the base level of clothing and got to work. Taking the vital signs of all three women, he was glad to discover all had a pulse. Some of them were weak, but a weak pulse was better than no pulse. He also glanced over at his two teammates to see how they were doing.

Cate was all business which was to be expected from a career military. Cass seemed a bit taxed by the ordeal, even shivering a little.

Cassandra, get yourself some of the tea, it should help boost your warmth and energy. Once that's done I need your help with our patients. I want them out of their wet clothing, it is just serving to hamper our efforts. When that's done, wrap them up in blankets and place some heating packs under their armpits and on their stomach. I'll get the IV's started which will help warm them p and replenish lost fluids."

As the medical equipment was stored near the cockpit, William made sure to remind Cate of one other aspect.
"It should be standard procedure, but make sure to remind our friends in the sky to have a med team meet us upon landing."

Kim was drifting in and out of consciousness.  She wanted to make sure her friends were both safe, but she just didn't have the strength to continue.  She coughed hoarsely again as she started to shiver, feeling like she was a block of ice.   She wanted to be home and laughing and joking with her friends again.  What everyone was saying was just going over her head and she could barely make out words.

Cass was suppressing the shivers but she was focused on more pressing matters. She was thrilled that Troy had taken point (as he should being the medic) and told her exactly what she could do to help without being asked."On it Troy" She stripped off her outerwear and took a few sips of tea before returning to girls that were far colder then she.

She began peeling off the girls clothing. It was frozen stiff around the edges which worried her, that kind of ice against skin could easily cause frostbite. She then put warm packs in the essential areas as Troy instructed. She then moved onto the next woman. Troy was putting in the IVs and they were moving in harmony tending to the 3 women. It was nice that they worked together so well and so efficiently without having to coordinate every little detail.

"Typical male." Cate wasn't impressed with Noah's reply, he could have waited a second for her to respond, hell how did he even know something hadn't happened in between. Still nothing did and the best thing was they had their girls in hand, though she was worried about Croumer, a friend from the past of her mother's and that always cut deeper.

"When you're both ready give me a shout. I want to take a look over that area the girls originally came from before we head back." Yes she knew every second counted and likely Troy would argue the point, but what she planned would take no more than an extra few moments. Cate began working through the dust off procedure, her hands tense as she felt the chill still in them. Checking her gauges she was surprised to see it was minus 25 outside.

"Won't be more than the shake of a cats tail Will..iam." Cate paused at the name briefly, he had the same name as her father and everyone who knew him, even subordinates called him Will. Not exactly and always to his face though, he was after all not so long ago Admiral and Commander of the Stargate fleet. She knew also everything Troy's name came into her head, she'd get a lump in her throat.

The lift off was smooth and easy for them as was expected considering the delicate cargo they carried. Cate did her best while in atmosphere to ensure the inertia dampeners were set to full, even if it did waste a little power, the ship could well afford it. Taking a smooth arc on a flat trajectory over the top of the mountain, she lowered the 401 into the valley where the Dreadnought had last 'caught' the trace of the vessel that had taken the girls. She did a quick sweep and found nothing visually, although her sensors would record much more, Cate didn't have time to analyse just yet, she'd take care of that once they were back. "Okay guys I'm done. We'll push on back to the Dread now. Everyone okay still?" She had to ask, the condition those girls were in could change at any time.

<Elara>

Elara is a small farming community situated roughly forty miles south of Foreston. The town is essentially a single main hard dirt covered road with some twenty or so businesses arranged either side. There are around eighty families in the area, most of them growing grains or raising live stock such as sheep and cattle. Some of the 'Wold's' best cheeses come from this region.
