Title: Stargate Command Level 27~ Officer's Lounge/Beaming room
Post by: Mim on September 22, 2016, 12:55:40 AM
Located on level 27, the officers lounge serves as both a meeting place for SG team CO's and a place for officers in general to just sit back, chill, play a video game, read or watch TV.

An adjoining room is used for most beam outs that do not occur in either the Gate room or main briefing room. Designated as safe for all beam outs.

A blinding flash and a blink - and they all were deep in the SGC once again, in the officer's lounge. The star were that nobody but SG-4 was in the room right now at the moment and Elena didn't want to waste the opportuinty while it still was there.

"What's on your mind, Catherine?"

Redhead folded her arms, staring in the eyes of her XO, waiting for a fast and honest answer.

Cass was happy to be on solid ground again, solid Earth ground. The smell of the SGC was familiar and comforting, all she could think about though was food. "How long do we have before we head to Russia? I wouldn't mind getting some American home cooking here from the SGC cafeteria. I love the meatloaf and of course blue Jell-O."

William couldn't help but chuckle at his teammate's comment
"While the DFAC(dining facility) usually has decent food, this is an Air Force installation after all, I wouldn't classify it as home cooking. I'm sure if we ask around we could find a nice hole in the wall restaurant nearby.".

One by one they appeared in the exact spot Cate thought they would, SG4's old office in fact. Well not exactly 'their' office, it belonged to all the teams, though it was a simple fact of life that since SG1's missions had been scaled back, this place was used by SG4 more than any other team. Almost with precision, the instant Cate appeared she fell back into the comfortable sofa that was facing the huge 50" TV screen on the wall; she picked up the remote to turn it on, then surfed through the channels until she found something mediocre that wouldn't attract attention. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives came on, so Cate left it there, no one would even bother looking in with that on. Though for her to be perfectly honest, she loved the show and the host Guy Fieri, he always gave her reason to laugh, especially his language and the descriptions he used for the food he 'road tested'. Cate often felt she missed her calling when she watched that show.

She turned the volume down to a level they could talk, but eaves droppers would have to come in to hear what they were saying. "We have four days leave Lena, more than we've ever had since the team was formed." A raised eyebrow at Cassie and William would let them know exactly the intensity the team had been working under in the last three years. "Guys, Lena and I made a promise to each other ages ago that if the opportunity ever presented itself, we'd take each other to our own home countries for a little holiday. Given that has never occurred and given that I am supposed to be doing this thing with the El'Dari we have no idea when this chance will ever come along again. So..." She sucked in her breath, this was the part where the TV came in handy as what she was about to say went against all the rules. "Colonel Davidson of the Apollo is a close friend of ours, though using a 304 for a personal taxi is stretching our team entitlements just a bit. I know he'd go for it, but as far as the base is concerned we're still on duty." She pulled up short when she realised what Cass had said about the Blue Jello, which made Cate smile broadly.

"Lena can cover for me, maybe you three can skip into Springs for a couple of hours. Do what you need to do, pack a small bag and so on. I'll go see Davidson and get it organised, then pick the three of you up from wherever you are. Cassie, Raphello's on Main in Springs is our goto place." She had so many great meals there which included Blue Jello.

Cass blushed and stuck her chin out. She genuinely enjoyed the meatloaf right here in the SGC cafeteria and was feeling a bit mocked by the rest of the team. She let out a big sigh and rolled her eyes.

"I really do like the meatloaf here, the gravy they use is good especially on the mashed potatoes they always serve with it. However if everyone else wanted to go out I'd be up for some sunshine and fresh air."

Cass was stubborn but also a very "half glass full" person and cheered up instantly thinking of the warm sun on her face. Colorado was great, cool crisp air and warm sun, being over a mile closer to the sun had distinct advantages in her book. She wished they had extra time so she could go for a hike on Pike's Peak. Cass heard the "four days off" line from Cate and it hit her, she needed to enjoy every minute of down time, but also she needed to do a better job of finding enjoyment and bonding with the rest of SG4 because she will likely spend more "quality" time with them than with anyone she has ever been around before. She has always been a bit of a loner, not usually letting people get too close, but now it was time to change that.

William shrugged. He had to remember that while on an Air Force installation, the rest of his team weren't members of the US Air Force. When returning from deployments, most everyone had separate cravings for food not available in the desert. While not a deployment in the strictest sense of the word, SG-4 had been through enough in the last few days to warrant some consideration.

"How about a compromise. We'll go to the DFAC this time, but before we ship out again I'm treating the team to a meal off base?"

Catherine surely did feel like at home in the officers lounge. It even could seem to a random stranger that the woman had it so planned before the teleport so she'd land straight onto the sofa. However, when Cate turned on the TV, Lena got a bit suspicious. When she saw the show her friend chose, it was hard for the redhead not to grin from ear to ear - by now Colonel could easily guess when her XO was doing a cover up to something fishy and mischievous she had planned. And just to better hear what deviousness was on the menu today, Elena plonked herself right next to Catherine, pretending to stare at the TV and taking a relaxed pose.

"Yeah, that's true. I can't remember us having more than two days free and that's usually cut short by one shitstorm or another. SG-4 somehow had it plateful from the very first day, and when by all mean we were supposed to get a break, we kinda replaced SG-1 in importance. I got sort of a leave not so long ago, but that's only thanks to the fact that I was recalled to Moscow for a long overdue promotion and a formal report for nearly eight years. Yikes... I serve here that long already..."

Anyway, what Cate is saying here was just like she puts it - when we became friends, we both expressed interest in seeing each other's homelands. That also seems to have been before this planet was formed... And to be frank with you, I don't really wanna waste the time. Moscow is one thing, hopping to my hometown is another. I wonder if my flat is still intact or some gypsies had moved in and burned it, need to visit grave of my Gramps too. He's probably wondering where's his little girl, why she's not coming for so long..."

Cate had to lean forward to focus on Guy for a moment. How ironic was this? His current segment was in a Navy yard canteen and he was sampling what was supposed to be the best burgers in San Diego. That did it for her and she knew then and there Cass was right. They needed sustenance before they left and they had the best restaurant in all Colorado not far away. She offered Lena her sleeve though, she couldn't stand to see her 'sister' weep. "Hey." She said, placing a reassuring arm around the Russian. "Guys, why waste an opportunity, it'll still be hours before we land somewhere else, so I'll go with it as Cass said, although for me it'll be one of the Chef's burgers...and the Blue Jello." The mash she could pass on, right now she felt like a healthy side of fries.

Cass let out a little squeal and broke into a big grin.

"I am thrilled to get some comfort food! I love to try new food too though Lena, I will definitely take you up on that!"

Elena rewarded Catherine with a warm, sympatetic glance feeling her arm wrap around her subtly, that glance being the only thing that said 'thank you' but that actually was louder than any word.

"Fine, fine, you've convinced me. Let's go and waste a few dollars in the local diner. And, Cass, watch out, you might be in for the more than you've bargained for with Russian food. Will, I will do, just try to keep your phone charged, okay? Cate, if you're so craving those burgers, then unglue yourself from that screen. The more time we wait, the less time we'll have to eat them."

What Colonel did not say out loud was that she was still trying to make her mind on what to do back home. Part of her was scared that after so many years serving in an international unit not just abroad, but often in other galaxies, she'd find her homeland a bit weird, completely out of the picture her memory still had.

Quite often with Lena things said on the fly or in rapid conversation ended up being lost in translation so to speak. It was of course no different this time as the discussion went from the SGC cafe to a restaurant in Springs, bouncing back to the base cafe again; any wonder the content got lost along the way. Cate let the hug remain for a moment longer before she made sure they were all now on the same page. "Simple Lena. Food, here, SGC. After that gather bags, belongings, beam up to the 'Pollo." Nothing could be simpler nor easier for these galaxy wide adventurers.

At that point Cate did stand though her eyes were still drawn to Guy stuffing some over  sized delight in his mouth. She licked her lips in anticipation of her own culinary devouring. "Thataway." She pointed to the doors.

"Don't you talk to me like I'm two. It's just that you lot kept hopping from one idea to another like a bunny on speeds that I've lost the train of thoughts. Okay, let's go to the damn cafe."

Colonel made sure to give a really evil eye to everyone on her team in case one of them was going to be a smart arse and headed to the doors out.

Major Fred Rivers
Captain Harly Green
First Lieutenant Charlotte Summers
Company Sergeant Major Gary Carter

in pairs SG-12 made their way to the officers lounge. a place they didn't often come, preferring to take residence elsewhere during their down time. Fred and Charlotte were first. She had stopped in to his office, most SG team leaders had an office, and most, taking after Jack O'Neill, didnt use them. But Fred did for calls and it was often where SG-12 spent their free time on the base. Fred had been getting an update from Whitehall.
"So did you find out why Air Vice Marshal Fraser was recalled Sir?" Asked Charlotte. Fred shrugged.
"No idea just something to do with Brigader Hunt telling the Chief of the General Staff, that having a Dame be head of the SGC was a security risk." He shrugged. "I mean not even Harry or William know about the SGC sure the PM, the Queen and Phillip do and William will some day. The idea that the head of the SGC has a Wikipedia page was a little concerning." Charlotte frowned making her way to a coffee machine as Fred flopped down on the sofa.
"Why did they put her in the position in the first place?" Fred shrugged.
"Something about the Space Kelts probably. Get a Dame to head the SGC, looks good when the whole shoe gose public." Charlotte frowned as she turned to him.
"The SGC is going public?" Fred shrugged.
"frak knows." He sighed as he heard foot steps and the faint sound of Harly telling Gary something. He looked to Charlotte who frowned.
"Hang on Dosnt Air Vice Marshal Our Rank Brigadier?" Fred nodded.
"Yeah. But Hunt's been in this game since you joined the SGC. Fraser was a last minuet introduction, Basically Hunt has more pull at the MOD." She nodded.
"Why hasnt he been promoted then?" She asked Fred looked to her as he moved and rested his foot on his knee.
"Politics." He shrugged. As he finished Harly entered the room.
"Umm..." Gary said from outside.
"Am..." He frowned.
"Am I allowed in an Officers Lounge?" Fred glanced over the head of the sofa.
"Sure, if anybody has an issue with it, they'll have to fight me." he said with a small shrug. It was one of those nationality things. In some places Non Coms wernt allowed in a Officers Lounge Full Stop, in others they were allowed in when invited by a Officer over a specific rank and others allowed higher ranking NCO's in as if they were officers, and there wasn't a sign on the door. Gary stepped in but remained standing they had no idea who was about to give their briefing, and he didn't want to stand up if it was somebody that was picky on the rules.

*Current date and time 26-09-11 0740 hours*

"Good morning SG-12." Cheryl of course knew each of them by name, though it saved her time to speak to them collectively. There were both lounge chairs and tables, they were round except one of them being oval catering to seat at least 15 people around it, as the Officer's Lounge often served as either a less formal or secondary Briefing room.

She pulled out a chair at the head of the table, placing her laptop down before plugging in the power cable and WiFi. "We'll be joined by both SG teams one and seven in a moment so perhaps you'd like to get yourself some tea or coffee. If you've not yet had breakfast I can call the kitchens to send up something." She naturally as an early riser had her cornflakes and toast at six am. "Did the Admiral outline anything of the upcoming mission for you Major?"

SG-7 managed to beat SG-1 to the Lounge, stepping inside.

"Morning. Captain Brian Coffin and SG-7." Brian said with a wave before going to set his M4A1 on an empty table in the back. Brian and Stan both had the same weapons, an M4A1 and an MP5K-PDW with suppressor fitted, but Brian's M4 had an ACOG with backup red dot while Stan's had a holographic sight with magnifier. Denis had an M4 and MP5K, but his M4 was also fitted with an M203, just as it had been during the skirmishes and raid at the Alpha Site. Nikolai had the short barreled Mk. 18 CQBR, the very compact cousin to the M4A1, and his Dragunov SVU bullpup sniper rifle that was also present with him at the Alpha Site's battlefields. Astrid had the Swedish Ak5C she sported on the castle raid, as well as the short Mossberg shotgun she used for the breaching action therein.

None of their weapons had magazines loaded, and they had no ammo on them except for two pistol mags on the opposite thigh of the Five-Sevens they all wore. They all found seats clustered together but separated from SG-12 and sat down.

After finishing his last text, Cam stepped into the room as well.

"Cheryl. What's going on here, doesn't the Admiral or Colonel handle briefings or did he change that?" Cam asked.

Major Fred Rivers
Captain Harly Green
First Lieutenant Charlotte Summers
Company Sergeant Major Gary Carter

Fred looked to Cheryl as she entered and gave a nod, Gary was about to stand but Fred tapped his side for him not to, there was no real point, if he stood once he would be standing for any officer that came in the room.
"I haven't spoken to the Admiral about the mission know, cause, you know, that's what briefings are for." He said with a small shrug. All he knew was that SG-12 were scheduled for a mission today and that was it. He then watched as SG-7 entered the room, he nodded to the Captain.
"Major Fred Rivers. SG Twelve," He then nodded around to his team. "Company Sergeant Major Carter, two IC. Captain Green the team boffin. And Left-enant Summers team medical officer." He took a moment to look the 5 man team over he was wondering why he haddnt seen SG-7 before, then he noticed the Alpha Site patch on their shoulder. Now he remembered, it was a new team stationed off world, no wonder he didnt know them. Though they all looked ready and able, even the older guy. SG-12 had moved to take the far right of the sofa and Harly and Charlotte has taken a seat at a table with their drinks. As Mitchell entered and spoke Fred nodded to Coffin.
"Why the FN?" He asked nodding to the pistol on the Captains leg. It was nice to see another SG team carrying pistols on base, He and Gary had been doing it for a while. Having been knocking about since 2003 they had seen a few foothold situations. Though it did make him think if SG-12 looked a little, disorganised to other members, with outdated DPM camoflage trousers and specially made Green Hoodies, Fred had a weeks beard as per British Military Regulations, though if he were honest, he only had it because he could. And two of them carried side arms at almost all times, he knew his team often received mixed reactions. So he wondered what they would get from SG-7 and SG-1

Cheryl dipped her head to the new arrivals as she set up the screen at the other end of the room for the briefing. Having visuals made it so much easier for her. "Good morning Captain, SG-7 and..." She paused as Cam joined them. "Morning Colonel." There were still several more to join them so she began making sure she had everything she needed. "Oh, Colonel Mitchell I'm sorry, the Admiral is quite busy and Colonel Davidson is off world currently, so I was tasked with the briefing this morning."

The first thing she did was to bring up a display of the dig site. "Just to get you started then Major Rivers I'm sorry, I thought Admiral McRaven might have outlined something; its not important though at this point as we still have others to join us. But in any case what we're about to delve into is basically an Ancient treasure hunt to use a standard turn of phrase." Cheryl felt quite excited really, here she was about to brief officers and NCO's who had years more experience than she, put together possibly as many years as she had lived or more. "This is PX7-994, it has no name other than we're calling it our 'Dig Site' for the time being. A little over a month ago a science and exploration team led by SG-9 began the task of uncovering an Ancient ruin...."

With Taleeya in tow, Vala got them to the right place in reasonable time after the call from Walter finding Cam already there SG-12 and another team she wasn't familiar with. Giving each in turn a cheery hello she guided her new friend to a chair around the large table; looking up at the screen already displaying a world that somehow looked so much similar to many other abandoned worlds out there in the galaxy. She only caught the last few words of the base Pay Officer, one of her favorite people. "Did you say treasure Cheryl?" He eyes lit up as she hung onto that single word.

"Senior Lieutenant Koralov, Sergeant Vallois, Doctor Grecko, and Miss Lofquist." Brian said, introducing his team in turn. Nikolai merely nodded once, Denis gave a single wave with a grin, Stan smiled and bowed his head slightly, and Astrid positively beamed as she waved. "As for the sidearm, well...low recoil, good armor penetration, high capacity, and it's a baseline for all of us. Otherwise, I'd have an M11, Lieutenant Koralov would have to decide between like 4 or 5 sidearms, most of which would be incompatable on ammo, Sergeant Vallois would have the French Beretta, Doctor Grecko I believe would be using a Polish Walther copy, and my Tech Specialist would be using a Glock." Brian explained as they found a seat, letting the Lieutenant begin the briefing that evidently she didn't normally do.

Well, that got all of SG-7's attention. So far, all they had done was capture the Forerunner Princess/Empress/Figurehead, and so they had been itching to do more than pull operations that were all too similar to what all of them had done or trained to do on Earth. Stan was particularly interested, this was right up the older man's field of expertise.

"Guess I'm not used to the one in the big chair delegating around here. But a good 'ol op on spelunking into an Ancient site. Don't suppose you know where Jackson got off to, because I think we'll need an expert on the matter, and I don't see one in here." Cam said.

Brian raised his hand, "Sir, Doctor Grecko is one. He's studied Doctor Jackson's work while obtaining his Master's from the University of Warsaw. Plus he's a veteran of GROM, Polish Special Forces. My team's lucky to have him." Brian's voice was neutral, but it was clear he took the slight against one of his own people as a slight against him.

"I'm also not familiar with every single person who walks through the door, Captain." Cam replied with an edge, which softened a bit as he continued, "That said, I stand corrected. But the more, the merrier." Cam had to admit that while his point stood about not knowing everyone here, he still did put his foot in his mouth assuming as much. It also did make him realize that without Daniel or Sam, his team had suddenly fallen short on that matter. Not unless Vala had suddenly become an expert in the matter recently or Taleeya or Cooper had a previously hidden talent they had yet to reveal...

Fred loosened for a moment to Cheryl and then nodded to Coffin as mentioned why his team carried the unique pistol, at least unique for the SGC, though it did take him a while to recall what an M11 was, but he glanced to the P226 on Garys leg and remembered it was the American name for that pistols smaller brother. He had to admit it was a solid reason. Same reason he carried a Glock 17 with his gear along with his Para Ordnance, that way he would share ammo with almost every other SG team. He took a moment to not to Harly as people were talking about Archaeology. "Harly here is a tech specilist, but she has read enough of Doctor Jackson's work to get by." He then realised he was the most experienced person in the room, well, at least for the SGC. Having been introduced to the Program in 2003, a few years before Mitchell had jumped ship from the Prometheus 302 Squadron.
"Though I will point out, from experience a lot of these, searching for ancient treasure missions tend to be quite annoying." He shrugged.
"Ancient Ruins get boring very quickly when you dont find things." He looked to Doctor Greko. "Though you might have a field day Doctor." He looked to Cheryl, "So are we all off to the same place or are we all gallivanting around the galaxy to different planets?"

"Boring Fred? How could you say looking for Treasure, erm I mean Ancient artifacts could be boring. Really, SG1 has always found these type of missions to be rather exciting haven't they Cameron?" Yes, like having to fight for your life with some old virtual Knight of the realm, or dragons! Now that was exciting. She whispered to Taleeya. "I'll tell you about that soon." She added a wink.

Cheryl looked up briefly, then down again to switch the view on the monitor. All it showed was a series of gate addresses, some explored (in Green), some banned from travel (in Red) and some that had yet to be looked at. One of those was highlighted. "Ahem, Doctor Jackson did arrive back at the SGC two days ago, but I understand he is busy reorganizing his lab and didn't want to disturbed for the time being. Now, we have analyzed some of the data from the scripts Doctor Bannerman sent us, from what we can discern this is something of a puzzle, that address is the first and as such all three teams will begin from there and any clues to further sites of addresses may hopefully be found there, or, if we're lucky it will be the one. It is P6G-12M (http://lostworldssff.com/index.php?topic=2846.new#new). So far no team has been there but we have sent a MALP through and everything looks to be in order."

"Don't push your luck, Major." Cam said in a warning tone to Fred. Yes, Cam had put his own foot into his mouth earlier, but that wasn't an open invitation to start taking shots at him. Or his team.

"Okay, so, we've got ourselves some Ancient stuff to go find, SG-9 got things started for us, and I assume the research team you mentioned is still there?" Cam asked.

"Sorry to bombard you with questions, but are we all going together or is this a 'divide and conquer' type situation?" Brian asked with a notepad in his hand. Stan had a larger one also out, likely so he could get information on what they were looking for written down, and Brian had no doubt the older man's notebook had a plethora of information already scribbled down.

"Wasn't trying to push it Colonel. Just pointing out a fact, your the flagship team, normally you dont have to deal with the boring stuff." He said with a shrug, it wasn't that he was judging Mitchell or the rest of SG-1 for that, they were the SGC's flagship team, it was to be expected other teams did the leg work, and he was fine with that, he more just wanted to make Vala aware that, she got the exciting missions because other teams didnt. Though things had been changing recently, Fred was very aware SG-12 would always be back up to some other team now that the standard objectives for SG teams no longer seamed to be Off World Exploration.

Stepping quickly back into the room, Cooper caught onto one word, that perked his ears up!"Sorry, had to hit the dunney.." he grinned sheepishly. Grabbing the nearest empty chair, he quickly sat down and sat quietly.

Cheryl looked up briefly when the Chief came in late; she dismissed it quickly as she knew Cam would let him know anything he missed out on. "I'm sorry if I have confused the issue Colonel. So to be precise, the dig teams are still located on PX7-994 where more extensive research is being carried out. P6G-12M is where all three teams will be going first up. As it is a large and vast area that needs thorough investigation it was felt from the outset it better to start this way. To make things easier, a Long Range Patrol Vehicle (http://lostworldssff.com/index.php?topic=1596.0) will be made available to each team. Have I covered everything?"

Vala was ticking off the boxes in her mind as each point was brought forward. She didn't hesitate to giggle at certain places with either Fred or when Cooper arrived, a question she said openly nudging Taleeya at the same time. "I've heard many expressions here on Earth, but not that one Chief. What exactly is a dunny?" She had an idea though. Moving on. "So treasure is only a 'maybe', what we're really looking for is possibly technology or something like that?" Vala had her eyes on the MALP camera view of the planet in question, she squinted at it. "Whoa! Am I wrong or does that look like Atlantis's spires in the background?" She could be mistaken of course though it was doubtful in this case, that image was just far too damning not to be.

When Cheryl mentioned the trucks that made her smile. It sure beat walking over miles of unknown terrain. "Cammy dear, can I drive?"

Fred glanced to Harly and then frowned she had been studying the image intently. He haddnt even noticed the spires, he had been so used to ancient ruins with nothing left that he had just thought it wasnt an amazing picture with lines in the back ground.
"It dose look like a spire, It would make sense, I am sure Atlantis wasnt their only city ship..."  Said Harly frowned. Fred then added.
"But the ruins in the foreground look gould." He had never quite taken to the proper pronounciation, he also didnt hold a pen properly or bother to pronounce his TH's correctly. But everybody still knew what he meant. That was when Gary then gave Fred a nudge. Fred frowned so Gary asked up.
"Who has the ATA Gene?" He asked. Fred frowned for a moment, He had to admit, he wasnt aware if Mitchell had it, it had never come up, but he knew Vala and the new girl on SG-1 likely didnt, it wasnt impossible, but the chances were slim. Honestly so were the chances of the others in the room, most people with the gene got cherry picked for Atlantis. Gary then added.
"Because that might decide who goes where. No point having SG-12 drive around a forrest in a jeep if Fred's the only one here with it." He made a point, if they were all going together, they had to pick and choose who went where, unless they wanted to spend hours there. Charlotte then added.
"How many people fit on each of those trucks?" She said, she knew there were at least four places, And if that was the case they would need at least four trucks, unless they all piled in to an open back ine.

"Roge. Sorry, just wanted to be clear." Brian said before glancing to SG-12's CO.

"Sir, both myself and Ms. Lofquist have the necessary gene. I underwent the gene therapy during training, she's a natural carrier." Brian commented, "As for these LAVs, well, you can get six if you toss out a couple ammo cans. They tend to go heavy on the ammo, no idea why. So at worst, we're looking at three vehicles, one for each team. Just depends on how we want to split this up. We might even consider the possibility this could take longer than a couple of hours, bring supplies to set up a base camp of sorts." Brian suggested.

"By the way, Koralov, you're driving." Brian said, glancing at his team's sniper. The Russian cracked the smallest of grins, he did rather enjoy off-road driving. He'd driven many backwoods roads and trails for enjoyment in his surplus UAZ before joining, and hoped to do so again at some point.

"Absolutely not." Cam said in regards to Vala's second question, half serious and half jokingly serious. Between his love for cars and his past as a fighter pilot, he hated being a passenger when he could be in control. Plus, Vala's driving was about as carefree as she could be at times...

"Terrain doesn't look too bad, but depending on what we're looking for out here, we might very well need the wheels just for transport. Any idea what we're even looking for? I mean, I seem to recall looking for a shiny red gem about the size of a bouncy ball and came up with an Ancient and some doohickey we had to finish from Ancient IKEA." Cam asked.

Taleeya actually giggled.  She had never been with a group quite like this  and as for a dunny,  she had no idea what that was.  Taleeya squinted her eyes a bit.  Atlantis? She hadn't had the pleasure of visiting there yet,  so she couldn't answer Vala's question.

"ATA gene?" She questioned.   "What is that?"   A grin touched her lips when she saw the machines.  "Now those I would like to learn more about."

Cheryl hadn't noticed it before, she looked hard at the screen nodding her head up and down. "I believe you are both correct. I could get Doctor Lee to do an analysis of it before you leave perhaps." The other questions went answered so she moved on as it flowed. "The ATA gene Taleeya is a genome that some humans possess that we understand was passed down through generations from the Ancients when they must have bred with early homo sapiens, or as we say modern man. It allows people such as General O'Neill, Colonel Sheppard and others to manipulate Ancient technology. That was something that always caused the Goa'uld issues when trying to back engineer the Ancient's devices, much of it needed the operator to have that gene." She went through her notes again remembering something from Doctor Bannerman. "Colonel Mitchell, one of the dig teams Linguists found what was translated into Latin as 'fons virtutis'. Which is if I am right is 'the power source." A ZPM maybe?

Fred stood up. He was thinking about what was needed to set up a camp. Maybe nothing, at least for his team their large packs, that they hardly took anywhere anymore, were always set for a planned night off world, plus up to 5 nights unplanned.
"Why dont we take a Puddle jumper as well?" He asked. "Two trucks and a Jumper. Give us a bit of air cover and I am sure a jumper is faster anyway." He frowned as he took a closer look at the picture. "Plus if anybody, or anything is home in the tower. Might be helpfull to show up in an ancient ship." He then looked back to the others. "Plus its probobly pointless taking three of the trucks, I dont think we'll need to use thee of them at any point, and if we all need to bang out I am sure we can mount up in just two of them. "But assuming nobody is home it might be worth setting up camp in the control room in the spire, plus probably worth bringing a few naquada generators. I'm not suggesting we fly the city or anything, but its easier to explore when the lights are on." He said with a shrug. He took a moment to look to the colonel, trying to see how he felt about the idea.

Vala bit her lip in mock disappointment. "Aww gee." She feigned a genuine let down, but she also knew that driving one of those sixteen geared beasts took some courage and bravado at the same time, which was a lot different to driving her little Lexus hatch. And why did they have two gear sticks? Wasn't one enough, better still they should have been automatic in her opinion. "Puddle Jumper? Do we even have one here that works?" She asked, she'd only ever seen one and the last time she was able to sneak down to that area it was as if it were in the repair shop for the next few decades or more.

Cooper had sat listening to all of the conversations, while looking at the screen and trying to visualize the area.  When Vala had asked her question, he reddened slightly and decided to tell her later, or, maybe just give a simple"loo" as his response,"Ma'am, what if we have never been tested to see if this gene is present and can it be done before we depart?
Looking to Vala, Cooper simply said"Vala, 'dunney' is simply Aussie slang for a 'Loo!"

"Chief, did you somehow end up spending a long time in Australia and the UK? You answered her question with a slang term Americans also don't use." Denis commented with a wry grin.

"Didn't pick that much up when I was at Lakenheath..." Brian added, before returning his attention to the briefing, "But loading more people isn't an option, Major. Trust me, I said the same thing, no one thought of an unarmed version. Personally, I hate driving them, it's like driving an even more top heavy MRAP. But, we don't fight with the tools we wish we had..." Brian trailed off, relating to a rather poor remark that the Secretary of Defense had made to soldiers asking for uparmored Humvees in Iraq.

"Cooper, you've been here far too long, if you haven't been tested already, you're not going to hold up a mission to do what should've been done YEARS ago." Cam said with finality. "Alright. Three trucks, three teams. We'll go with Fred's assessment and make our base camp at the site itself. Cheryl, tell them when they give us the vehicles to pull all the ammo out of 'em. I mean all of it. We've got 13 people here and SG-7 brought enough firepower for two of them, so if we run into trouble and can't deal with it ourselves, well, we deserve whatever we get. Plus, we'll need the space for base camp gear." Cam said.

"Is there anything else we should cover, or should we go ahead and get geared up?" Cam asked, looking around the room.

She couldn't help stifle a decent giggle at the exchanges, well it was typical around SG1 at any one time in their history, she'd read enough reports to know that and watched hours of video on their briefings. "Yes sir Colonel. They can do that in minutes, I'll get Master Chief Sergeant Siler on it immediately. The upper turret ammo is stored in the ceiling anyway so that shouldn't be a problem, but looking at that terrain, as Captain Coffin pointed out we may need to shred some of the weight on top. We can remove the missiles and the actual 30mm turret leaving only the .50 cal sir. The camp gear is already packed on a second MALP sir."

Fred looked to Cooper. "If you were in any SF community in 2005 or 6 you would have been checked. And if you had it you would have been recruited for Atlantis." He shrugged.
"I would say lets sort out who's going where, like the colonel said, there ate three teams here, would be pretty dumb if we all sat around in the same place, two teams may as well explore whilst one sets up a camp." In the back of his mind he was thinking about the trucks.None of his team had ever driven anything with more than 4 wheels. He could drive, they all could bar Charlotte, but he knew Americans had to do special courses to drive things and had no idea if these trucks were different in their eyes. And he didnt actully enjoy driving. Though he did love flying puddle jumpers, he was a little suprised they didnt have any seamed a little stupid, last he checked Atlantis had more than enough he wondered where the rest went. But it wasnt his place to argue. But he did have to add. "A Malp is a little slow isnt it?" He said with a frown. "Also if its possible can we take one of the ones with a rail gun in the back?"

Taleeya was getting a bit confused by all the talk.  The ATA gene now made a little more sense, but now the weapons talk was getting confusing.  The Jaffa didn't us3 all that.  Everyone else seemed to understand though, so that's what mattered.   She didn't have any further questions so she would just wait to see where they wanted her.

Cooper felt like he had been hit in the head with a hammer! He sat and thought.."So, if I had had this gene, I would have been posted to Atlantis..but, because I don't have this frakkin' gene, Im being cut from this mission? He quickly realized that he had spoken to himself a bit louder than he was aware."Colonel, I guess I don't have this gene, as Im sure the Major is correct!  But, my record should speak for itself, even before I joined the SGC.  So, I cant 'commune' with Atlantis..I can still fire a rifle and my marksmanship has never been questioned, Sir!  Im still able to work with this or any other team..I need to 'see' Atlantis..Sir!" Then, quickly looking at his two questioners, Cooper quickly replied.."To answer your questions..Im an 'Aussie-phile!'  I love the country and I was able to take almost 3 weeks leave there, between 'assignments'.  I also love the colloquialisms..'Dunney' and 'loo'..'sheilas'..fair dinkum!! Smiling, he turned back to look at the Colonel.."Sir?"

To say Cam was p*ssed was a severe understatement. As Morgan threw his fit, Cam made his way over.

"Hold on, before you go...got something that doesnt belong on you." Cam said all too casually before ripping the SG-1 patch off of Cooper's shoulder. His expression was one so furious, Vala had not seen it in years.

"If being on my team is such an inconvience to you "comuning" with Atlantis, whatever the hell that means, then let me solve it. You are off my team. Get the hell out of my sight!" Cam barked. He'd tell McRaven later, but right now, he was so furious he was seeing red.

"Anyone else got a gripe I can resolve, or can we act like professionals and do the damn job Cheryl is trying to give us?!" Cam demanded, holding up the patch with the meaning clear; he would pull more from -7 and -12 if things didnt shape up right now.

Vala didn't know what was going on as she looked from one team member to the other. She sure as hell knew though it wasn't good and it certainly wasn't a good idea to get under Cameron's skin. Granted she did and often, but that was different, she did that in the way he and others expected her to do, Vala was the jam in the bread, that little bit of sweetness that made the sandwich much more palatable than plain old white slice. "If I may, I think we're talking ourselves into oblivion, wouldn't it be better to just get out there and see what we need to see before we start asking ourselves what we're all doing here?" That included everyone. Poor Taleeya must be wondering what craziness she'd gotten involved in. "Don't worry too much about the melodrama Taleeya, it does get better." She had to reassure her.

She nodded.  "Thank you, " she whispered to Vala.  "This is all very strange to me right now."

Cooper still sat in his chair.  Not being sure about what had just happened, he ran the "outbursts" over in his head.  Mumbleing , he said to himself..I had had no intention of 'honking' the Colonel off like that.  I just wanted to explain why this mission was important to me.  Im a member of SG-1 and Ive had my share of experiences here.  Im also a historian and a S.E.A.L.!  The chance to see something like this, something from Earths history/mythology is a fantastic opportunity.  Im also pretty good with a sniper-rifle and we are going into unknown territory and my particulay skill set will come in handy there.  I may have been a bit overzealous, but Ive always been that way..keeps me on my toes!  But, if I have to "Eat Crow", I will!

Meaning that if you do not get your sorry butt out of my sight, I will have SFs do it for me, and I will authorize them to zat you to do it. Sitting there and muttering while I am right fraking here isn't helping. Also, no one in Australia talks like that, I have been there before." Cam gave one last glare to the man who was one step from getting punched in the mouth before looking to the others.

"Everyone else, get your gear and report to the Gate Room in Thirty. Someone make sure that we have the supplies needed to set up base camp at the site included in our trucks." Cam ordered, and then headed up to Cheryl.

"Now, Lieutenant, what is it? And if Morgan hasn't left yet, get the SFs ." Cam said.

Brian and his teammates shared a look between each other but offered nothing. Had the Chief just snapped and lost his marbles right there, or was this something else? It was like the comment Major Rivers had made set this dude off on a one way trip to Crazy Land, despite the fact that it more or less was a true statement. Even Brian had been told that four or five years ago, he'd have gone to Atlantis because they were in dire need of operators with the ATA Gene. Now they had so many that it wasn't a big deal.

"Roger that, sir. SG-7, grab your gear, let's go ammo up and get whatever else we need." Brian said, standing up and taking the lead to collect the empty rifles, SMGs and shotgun that they had brought from the Alpha Site.

"Ah. So. You must be Vala? Astrid Lofquist." Astrid tried the waters, trying to break up the tension somewhat. But Brian knew the tension would take a while to pass. After all, there were five women in the room and Denis hadn't made a single flirtatious comment to any of them. If anything, the French Commando had a serious expression on his face that was more at home with Nikolai's stoicism, not Denis' more laid back attitude.

Cheryl guided, coerced Cam into a corner of the room, basically behind General Landry's rubber tree that had a little sign on it 'move it under threat of death', it had been there since Hank took over some time ago and it would probably remain there until the small tree died of natural causes. She was whispering just above hearing level. "Sir you're still down a member, I know Doctor Jackson is back on base, I can call him quietly if you wish sir. And yes on the last Colonel." She glanced out to see the others starting to leave.

Not everyone was always suitable for the lead team. "Yessir, I'll get on it immediately. I think as well we have somewhere that we can place the Chief so he can get his mojo back if you know what I mean sir." She let him go, then as she was walking away she pipped her radio. He let out a frustrated sigh, "C'mon, Fred. Sorry I snapped at you, and no, you didn't do anything wrong. Turns out my former fourth was about as nutty as a Payday Bar." Cam said to Fred, before leading the way to the Armory.

Major Fred Rivers
Captain Harly Green
First Lieutenant Charlotte Summers
Company Sergeant Major Gary Carter

Fred shrugged as Cam spoke to him. He appreciated whatnthe colonel had said, even if hevwasnt sure the colonel needed to say it. But still.
"Ill see younin the gate room sir. My teams gear is held somewhere different." Basically when they had joined the armourers had never seen a L85. So they had been required to stor their own gear for a while, and it had stuck. So he perled off.

Hurley was the first to the beaming room, adjusting his plate carrier straps as he walked through the door. He had been wearing his NWU fatigues since stepping back on base this morning, so the change to combat gear has been quick. Plate carrier, helmet, gloves, and he was good to go. Even though he didn’t get out in the field much, he always keep a fully loaded kit hanging in his locker for situations like this. Over the last couple of years he had found himself letting the straps out more and more, a sign that he needed to double down on his PT in his old age.

An airman sat in the corner of the room with a laptop and comms setup. Hurley handed him their target beaming coordinates - the closest Apollo thought it could get them to without hitting the jamming field. “Priority tasking, three-man team to Cartagena, Columbia via Apollo.” The airman brought up the command console and began calibrating the beaming grid.

The CWO patted down his gear while he waited, double and triple checking that everything was secured where it should be. The only thing worst than forgetting something was dropping it in the field for the enemy to find. The last things they needed was SGC-issue gear falling into the hands of the enemy or the local police.

"Yessir." The young man sent the coordinates and the request directly via a coded transmission. A minute later he received the confirmation as the Australian came in. "Confirmed sir."

One floor up wasn't far as the two men swung by the officer's lounge. Ben was half tempted to switch on the TV, as he knew today his beloved Bulldogs were in the preliminary finals. Well yesterday really back home. He checked his watch..."Damn, kick off in one hour and I'll be playing shooting gallery with some mercs and Jaffa. Have a nice day." All that mumbled under his breath as they reached the more secure beaming room.

He moved just out of earshot of the Airman, keeping his voice low. "Listen Mr Hurley, I need to ask you this. When we're being shot at madly and there is a lot of screaming and death, can I call you something else." Ben said with his lazy Aussie drawl. He was never too sure with Americans, some were sticklers for the regs, others were not. God even with his own team back in the Stan, his Lance Corp called him Ben in the field.

There was one other thing. "Excuse me airman." He reached across to the keyboard of the controller's desk tapping in a few keys. "This is the live feed from the Apollo, we need to pick our entry points now." Of course in a matter of minutes that could change.

The last man as usual when Taer walked into the beaming room. Breathing a sigh, he pressed two fingers against the side of his neck to test his rapid pulse and realized he was cutting a bit close. Just a under a minute since he was required to meet the Colonel in under eight minutes. It wasn't too bad.

Walking across the room into the secured area, he recognized Ben and saw the other team member. Taer realized they might be able to pull the mission off with just three of them, but he was hoping maybe another one would be joining them. Then again, three men seemed enough. Looking at the Colonel, Taer saluted, "Reporting as ordered, Colonel."

Looking at the other team member he didn't know, the captain freely introduced himself, "Captain Amir. Taer, which is my nickname, or Captain would do just fine. Doesn't matter."

The Colonel joined him in the beaming room just as the airman in the corner confirmed their beaming request on his console. Michael smiled at MacGregor's request. "Colonel, I've been called a lot of things in my time, almost none appropriate. Warrant or Hurley is fine." It would normally takes weeks, if not months, for a small team like to start working together properly. This was going to be a trial by fire for TF Blackbird.

The third member of the team entered the room and introduced himself as Captain Amir, USMC. "Warrant Officer Hurley, US Navy." The three men on the ground would almost double the strength currently represented by SG-9, but it might still not be enough. The CWO had been handed the latest aerial surveillance on his way to the briefing room, which showed an overwhelming hostile force surrounding Colonel Reynolds and his team.

"Alright, let's do this.

"Right, Hurley and Taer it is then. In case either of you get tongue tied at any point in the heat of the battle, I answer to Grizzly more than anything else." Ben doubled checked the map. "We'll insert just outside the wire near the lake, that's about 150 meters. Taer, we need that wire to come down quickly, how good is your underarm? I've done it before quite easily, all you're doing is gently rolling a grenade to stop at the wire...boom! We're in. Hurley and I will take out the corner guard post and that group nearest. From there we run like hell across the rear section, lob frags into the back door and then take care of the further group near the second top guard post. Hurley, you'll call SG-9 and tell them to leave the building via the side door and bolt north. We'll lead them out into the field to the East. From that point we'll see what our exfill options are."

For the entire walk to the Officer's lounge Cate went through everything she had learned about not only herself, but the people who had filled her life and all of those connections that tied back to Mike. There were a lot of them and sifting through what meant something and what was a minor thing wasn't going to be easy for she knew that in the end to bring Mike back to the here and now had to involve those things in his life that no matter how trivial they appeared, were a piece in the puzzle.

The TV was still on, she saw the situation in Japan and that raised the hairs on her neck making her want to rush out there and do something. She had to switch off; picking up the remote pressing the red button made that part easy. From there she cast her eyes around the room, it was comfortable, inviting, making it the right atmosphere to make this happen. Until Mike and Coops arrived she chose a slow pacing to fill in the time.

The ride down with the elevator was a pure nightmare for Mike, being trapped inside the small confinement of the cart with absolutely no way out. He kept his eyes trained on the door, sweaty palms tightly clutched inside the pockets of his pants and for all his might, trying to remember the breathing technique Annie had taught him as a way to handle this. Long and slow breaths. The feeling of anxiety won’t kill you, it’s just a feeling. Nothing bad will come out a feeling. Yes, it’s scary, but it won’t hurt you. Breath, long breaths in, hold it and count to 3, let it out as you count to 3… and again.

As the doors opened, Mike pushed out of the elevator even before they were fully open, only stopping when he reached the concrete wall opposite, bent over with the hands on his thighs and inhaled deeply before straightening up again with his eyes closed.
“I am so not going to do that again,” he muttered quietly before facing Coops, “Please tell me this is not how I usually handle these kinds of situations!”

"Easy Mike, easy." How many times had Coops said those words on the battlefield? How many men and women had to be consoled by someone with the red cross on their sleeve when there were no visible signs of wounds? He had lost count, the thing was this reaction from Mike had something to do with memories of his deep past, memories triggered by what? The confinement of the elevator, closed in spaces? That had to be it and there was another piece of the puzzle for someone to work out. Whether or not it was Cate and whatever she could do that the professionals couldn't was to be seen. Still Coops had seen quite a few so called miracles during his time with Stargate Command. If she pulled this off his skeptics meter was going to take quite a dent. Arm around the shoulder Cooper semi guided, pushed Mike towards the lounge. "No it isn't buddy and we'll find the answers one way or another. Come on, I think we're on the last road of your journey back into the world." He stopped at the door.

"Cate, how you doing? I guess this is now or never for Mike isn't it?" He asked her, not entirely sure what else to say there and then.

The first thing Cate noticed for some reason was the fact that Cooper was wearing sandals, that made her smile bringing back memories of her father and his favorite footwear. She looked at both of them, her arms open wide and welcoming; this with the will of God was going to return Mike to himself and those who loved him. Then she did a double take, looking back at Cooper's feet, yes feet. "Whoa!" She exclaimed softly, realising that was a subject for later as Mike was the focus now.

"Mike please, will you sit with me here on the lounge?" She backed up, legs against the soft furniture. To Cooper she left it up to him. "This might take a while Coops, you can go for a walk if you like and I'm sure you'll know about it when we're done."

The arm Coops offered helped ground him in the here and now, so after a nod, a quiet “That’s comforting to know,” and another deep breath, Mike accompanied him in to the room where Cate already waited.
He sat where she’d indicated; elbows resting on his knees, hands clasped together in front of him and looked up at Coops, “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine as long as I stay out of that elevator.” Turning to Cate he said with a slight strain in his voice, “So how do we proceed from here?”

"No elevators I promise." Typically Cate avoided a direct question and that didn't set well with Cooper. Either she knew what she was doing or she didn't, there could be no half way measures with this. "Listen both of you. I have no idea Cate what you're about to do, but I do know this. If it involves Mike's mind you had better damn well have someone here on hand in case-" He wiped his hand over the bald head. "- well I don't have to spell it out. I'm sure you know what I mean and if its not me, then Anne or one of the other MO's."

Mike bowed his head with a sigh. Somehow he’d hoped they would be able to keep this as low key as possible and with no audience. At all. But the thought of having one of the doctors on stand by had crossed his mind too, hadn’t it?
He looked up at the others, “No, not Anne. While she’s skilled in her ministrations, I don’t want someone here that I haven’t even met face to face yet. If you feel you absolutely have to call someone, then see if Andy is around. According to Elle, he’s the one I’ve worked closest with over the years.”

While Cate took her place on the couch she sighed deeply. Maybe she was in sync with Mike or maybe it was her instincts; from her point of view there was no way in Hades she was about to allow her mother in her while she did her voodoo magic. Anne is the last person on the planet Cate would allow in the same vicinity for what she knew had to be done for not only from that family connection angle and the trepidation it could cause; the woman as a doctor was far too regimented in her ways and to her as a Doctor was going to see this as nothing more than hocus pocus. Shaking her head wearily the answer came easily, Mike was right. "Coops I love you man but no. I need this to be as undistracting as humanly possible so my mother? No way. You can go fetch Andy if you must but when he arrives here I'll need him to be as inconspicuous as humanly possible. Capisce?"

Taking a moment while she could before Cooper's answer came she turned to Mike. "Don't get the wrong idea Mike, we're going to hold hands during this as I need to have as much physical contact with you as I can. At no time are you to release my hands until this is over, I have to stress this." There were other ways as Sunniva had taught her, this though was the most practical for Mike.

The blank look on Cooper's face said quite clearly he wasn't overly convinced. Being who he was though allowed him to just go with the flow on this; Mike had made his point as had Cate, so that was it. "Okay I get the point. I'll go chat with Andy and hopefully he remembers who I am; which if he is duty MO today he'll have to sign me in as it is my first day back." He patted the orders from the Air Force Medical Administration board in his back pocket, well folded and pressed by now.

“Oh crap, I’m pretty sure I pi$$ed him off, but I guess I’ll just have to deal with that later,” Mike muttered when Coops had left the room, “…if I live to tell the tale.”
He pulled off his sweater, because all of a sudden it felt to hot in the room to keep more than one layer of fabric on and placed it on the armrest behind him.
Adjusting his position to be able to sit facing Cate, Mike placed his hands in to hers and made eye contact, “Well, I’m not going to allow you any more physical contact than this anyway, so let’s get a move on before I change my mind. What’s next?”

Nodding her agreement Cate spoke in a way Mike may never have heard her before, if he could remember of course and that was to whisper. "I believe we both have. I'll make it up to him later." Then she straightened her back, gazing into his eyes as if seeking something there and well she may. "That is all I need Mike, now close your eyes and think of nothing but a butterfly, a clear blue sky and a fresh wind on your face. Nothing can hurt you here, nothing at all...." Her voice by now was an echo in his mind as for both of them they were transported to another realm, as if experiencing an out of body event.

"Open your eyes." They were no longer sitting on the couch, rather standing in the Alpha site infirmary. It was rather odd, as if someone had stripped away most of the colour spectrum, leaving shades of grey generally with light touches of colour here and there. There was no mistaking the reddish colour seeping through a bandage wrapped around a woman's torso, her torso in fact as the pair of the here and now Cate and Mike stood behind Mike some three and a bit years ago......Thursday January 8th 2010

                                       ***************

Cate turned over slowly, a mouthful of expletives on the verge of being spewed out as the pain in her side and her bandaged hands were felt beyond the morphine she must have been given. One eye opened slowly to see a man sitting nearby, she glanced at the wall clock, hell she must have lost a whole day. Rather than swear as her nature wanted her to do, with a croaky voice she spoke to him. "Who are you?" She hadn't seen him before, somehow she felt rather than took notice of the fact he was a Doctor. "How long have I been out?" All she recalled was trying to hook up that naquada generator to the main power room for the gate when she was thrown back in an explosion of sparks, her chest searing in pain to match the terror she felt in her hands before everything went black. That was Wednesday around noon, Cate looked up trying to see the digital clock behind the stranger, his head was in the way.

Doing as he was told, Mike closed his eyes and let go, focusing on that butterfly and how its wings slowly moved in the air… in the cool breeze…

The feeling of being in one place one second, only to be somewhere completely different within the blink of an eye, must have been the strangest feeling he’d ever had. ‘It has to be… if this isn’t?’ Mike thought as he watched himself get up from the chair and approached the woman, Cate, in the bed.

Mike crouched by the bed, “I’m Dr Mike Jaworski, member of the medical team who spent close to three hours, pulling shrapnel out of your body after the stunt you pulled by the generator.”
Glancing at his watch, he made a ‘so and so’ motion with his hand, speaking in a low, serious voice, although the amused spark in his eyes was a dead giveaway of him not being so serious as he sounded, “I’d say you’ve missed Thanksgiving, Aunt May’s birthday, and probably Christmas Eve, but what do I know? I spend too much time patching you guys up, only to watch you ruin my handiwork and come back like two days later for yet another make-over. Anyway, since I apparently have lost count of days, you probably only just missed the 2200 dinner.”

Mike frowned at the scene in front of them. This ‘Mike’ seemed so young in lack for better words, even if it couldn’t be that long ago, judging from the appearance of this version, and the version he’d seen in the mirror this morning.
The headache he was all to familiar with, had started to make itself known again. But for now, it was only a nuisance in the back of his head. Nothing more. Nothing he couldn’t handle.

Pulling herself up she was happily grateful that she had something to cover her in the way of a sheet at least. Underneath that they hadn’t yet given her a ward gown so she realized she must be still in recovery. “Well then Doctor Mike I owe you don’t I? Three hours and all that fun afterwards?” She mused on the outcome of it all, but since she was here and he was there so the base must have survived after all.

                              *************************

Like phantoms, the watching Mike and Cate moved around the bed unseen, she was in control and it would be a disaster if she let go now. Even here there was a thing as entropic cascade failure. The scene shifted rapidly, giving Mike flickering insights into important events in his life. A beach party in front of the hangar bay at the Alpha site, of course there was no pool but there was a tiny little creek out back of the hangar. Everyone in their swimmers, some even with Navy issue life vests, deck chairs and a game of volley ball. Cate and Lena vs Bonnie and Cooper, not a real fair game really, Cooper was a one man team. Score. CL -0, BC-10. Watching from their chairs sipping faux Pina Colada’s were Mike and Elle, their heads just perhaps a little too close together and just maybe they weren’t watching the game at all.

Blurred motion, another change, Mike was in Chalmer’s office, they were not having a really good time of it, and for a while as the solid Cate flicked through Mike’s memory files there were gaps, gaps that he had hidden himself and they were not pretty. She knew it was Afghanistan and she knew what had happened. He was trundled out of the Stargate Program for a short while and she wasn’t going to touch that.

Movement again, a camp on an island in a lake, laughter then a storm and a dramatic sea rescue; images of all Mike’s friends smiling at him passed by, Emily Harris, Andy, Jim Lucas, old Doc Gordon, Ruby and of course Cate’s Mother Anne and so many others. Finally the movement stopped and they were on a spaceship, the Daedalus to be precise. Mike had just finished working with his close friend Carrie, their patient was Bonnie Heckman, she had been burned badly, had multiple life threatening injuries, lost her left arm and leg and they were deciding whether to turn off her life support until Major Marks begged them not to. “That plucky kid saved 12 people down in Engineering, we owe her, isn’t there something we can do?”

Both doctors were skeptical but in the end as the ship drew closer to Earth they sent her down for further examination.

                              *************************

“She is alive because of you and some ground breaking science we thought only possible via science fiction, a virtual mini Terminator, Mike but in a good way. As you saved me and many others, this was a part of your life and the biggest parts are still tucked away in there.” She tapped lightly on his noggin. The scene blurred one more time. It showed a rare glimpse into something from Cate’s memories as she sat on a bed with Elle; consoling her. They were still looking for him, after three weeks Elle was breaking and the tears hadn’t stopped for days. Normally these two were like cats in opposite corners, but Cate knew pain only too well.

“What do you remember?” Her voice a soothing river trickling by as the sun shone down on them, that rainbow had returned.

Mike let out a small chuckle, “I’ll call it even if you promise me you’ll never call me Doctor Mike again, and I might just throw in a “Get well soon”-party for good measure.”

  ******************

The lights so to speak flickered and they were outside…'The Alpha site?' popped up in Mike’s head and with not so little fascination he looked at himself sitting there, close to ‘Elle?’ They looked so content, so happy… and totally oblivious to the game upfront.
Mike pulled down the baseball cap over his eyes because no matter how nice it was to sit here, warm and relaxed close to someone he really cared for, his head had started to throb. If he was honest to himself, he actually cared more for her than any other woman he’d ever met, and that had been quite a few over the years, but there was no way he was going to tell anyone about it. Not in a million years.
He must have spent too much time in the sun with too little to drink and was becoming dehydrated – hence the upcoming migraine he concluded, maybe it was best to cut this party short and head inside in the coolness of the underground bunker.
‘No wait. That’s not at all what had happened. They had partied till the sun more or less went down. Up until the point where Colonel Sharp came out and more or less by force had made them clear the landing strip…’

Another flicker and he were standing in front of Chalmers. The head ache he had was really starting to annoy him by now.
“Do you still stand by your decision to refuse to follow orders, Major? I am giving you one last chance.” Her voice was calm and icy. Not a good sign, Mike was very much aware of that, making him feel more or less like he was back in the principal office while in junior high. This time though, he *knew he, as per say, hadn’t done anything wrong. Not like when he and Cate had produced a home made "Who me?"-pouch and placed it under the seat of her office chair.
‘Primum non nocere’, Mike took aim at a spot on the wall behind the Alpha site CO. “Yes, Ma’am. I can not or will not participate in the interrogation of the Goa’uld prisoner.”
There was a dead silence for a few seconds before Chalmers spoke again, and Mike could almost swear she enjoyed doing this. “Very well then. Since 24 hours in solitary confinement didn’t make you change your mind, you leave me with no other choice than to send you back to Earth and let the SGC deal with you.” She waved towards the SF’s by the door. “Escort Jaworski back to the SGC. Dismissed.”
‘Looser! I knew all along you wouldn’t be able to follow a simple order!’ shouted the voice of the man who called himself his father from a distance. CRAP! His head hurt!

Then, the images came so fast! Faces and names. Places he wanted to forget and he were totally lost again…

Med bay. The Daedalus. Yeah, he knew this place. He’d all of a sudden, for some unfathomable reason been transferred from Landstuhl back in to the Stargate program.  He’d come onboard to try and guide that knew CMO, a pure civilian, on her first voyage in space, so half a sleep due to jet leg and a large, steaming cup of coffee he’d entered the med bay. Coops in tow… no, wait wrong memory… this was later… much later… after they’d amputated Coops legs and now he looked down at Bonnie. ‘The most humane thing to do is to turn everything off and call defeat. Don’t let her suffer. Primum non nocere…’
But Mike kept quiet; there was nothing he could say. He was afraid his voice would break if he spoke. Carrie would have to call it. She was the boss, the CMO, not him, not ever. He was just so darn tired about all of this hurt and blood and gore and suffering… and his head that was threatening to explode any second…

  *****************

When he saw Elle sitting on the edge of the bed, it brought tears to his eyes. Tears he thought he’d stop producing eons ago. “I’m so sorry hun. I never meant... I’ve missed you so much…” he mumbled as the room faded and a vision of an open field emerged.
Taking a deep breath he sobered up a bit and turned towards Cate, “To much… I remember way to much… but I’m not sure I want to go on. Not sure if I can take any more of this?”

Stepping in to the room, Andy found it all quiet and deserted apart from the two in the couch. Sitting absolutely still, opposite each other with their eyes closed and holding hands, the scene could easily have been mistaken for something else than it really was.
Afraid to disturb or interrupt anything, Andy slowly slid off the back pack on the soft carpet and as quietly as he could took a few steps nearer to be able to have closer look at them both.
Mike had a few drops of sweat on his forehead, but apart from that he seemed to be doing fine with no real signs of distress. Same went for Cate. Nothing obvious at least, he concluded.
Slipping an inward sigh of relief, Andy retreated just as quietly and sat down on one of the chairs a couple of yards away, turned the sound off on his radio, but kept it in his hand, then leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest. Ready to wait for as long as this took.

The story of Mike's life, his most recent life unfolded in rapid succession, one scene after another like the preview of the next latest movie and the viewer has to try and fit the pieces together to make sense of it. Cate knew most of it, some of it although she wasn't present she had either heard about it or read in mission reports. A pang of sadness ached in her heart knowing how hard this must be for him, the last scene the most poignant. There was only one last thing she had to do. "No Mike, you have reached the end of your journey, your memories will return and though I cannot promise you won't feel a sense of suffering in the coming days, I want you to know I and others will be there for you." In this grey world she placed both hands, one either side of his forehead, Cate drew deep down into the gift she was given, she found it ironic that she told him he might suffer; what she was about to do may well cause her pain of its own. "Remember, remember..." She repeated a few times her voice becoming a faint whisper of an echo each time. When she took her hands away they were both awake, sitting as they had begun. Cate's eyes looked at his, for a moment, then she fell back on the sofa holding her head in apparent pain, tears streaming down her face.

His first instinct when Cate reached out for him was to back off. Fast! But then he remembered. ‘Friend’ and stood his ground in the gray world he so long had wanted to tear apart. To leave behind.
Listening to her voice, he slowly became aware of them sitting in the lounge again, facing each other.
Mike met her eyes for a split second before the pain in his head came back with a vengeance and he thought that this was it, this was truly the end of everything…  a moment later the darkness engulfed him, he slipped a sigh and let go.

“Oh Craaaaap!” Andy got up from the chair faster than a 100-meter runner leaves the starting block and knelt by the couch. Seeing someone go into a seizure was bad, seeing your friend cramping up like this, was even worse, but all he could do right now was to push his emotions aside and try and act professionally. Rolling Mike over to a prone position, make sure his airways stayed free, Andy then turned towards Cate. “Hey, Cate! Talk to me! How are you doing?”

"Ooooooh bloody hell." Through watery eyes Cate could only barely make out the face in front of her yet she knew the voice only too well. Aside from that she was as confused as you can get for the time being as reality had not set in as quickly as it should. Dizzily she answered. "Andy what are you doing here? And for that matter what am I...." Then she realised exactly where she was, wiping her eyes with her sleeve one at a time, she sat up. "Andy...M..Mike, he will be having a massive memory recall, please get him into the infirmary pronto and you may want to give him a light sedative....he isn't going to be a very happy camper when he wakes up." That was the sum of it.

Andy turned on his radio and pushed the call button, "Flemming, Sutton. Get a medical team down here and a gurney…" He shot a look over at Cate and added, "No wait, make that two." then placed the radio on the floor next to him and hauled the bag closer to one handed dig out some equipments to monitor Mike’s vitals.
“Oh, don’t worry, Cate, I’m getting him there alright. In fact, I’m taking both of you with me. As soon as Mike’s done with the CT, you’re next in line and there will be no arguments from you about anything I do while you’re there.”
He blew out a frustrated snort, “What the h€ll were you two thinking? I guess Mike could always blame temporary insanity due to amnesia, but you? You know better!”
Finally Mike’s body relaxed and he pulled in a deep breath, but didn’t move apart from that. “Thank you for small graces.”  Andy mumbled as the pulse oximeter whose numbers had been declining at a worrying rate at first, but was now starting to get back up to a safe 98 and 99.
When he spoke up the next time, facing Cate, his voice was much calmer. “I just don’t understand how you dared pulling this sort of ‘Vulcan mind trick’ on him without any kind of monitoring… and yes, McCoy does have my sympathies.”

(https://i.imgfly.me/atfeD.jpg) (https://imgfly.me/i/atfeD)

Distant voices. The faint smell of recycled air with a hint of dampness in it. Lying on his side... Crap it was hard to think straight, difficult to keep track of his latest thought… Soft material underneath him, so still on the couch then. Very slowly Mike started to take stock of the surroundings… and himself.
Sore muscles and the still ever present head ache made him slip a small groan of discomfort.
The feeling of a hand on his shoulder made him pull in a deep breath, “Hey there. You with me buddy?” Andy’s voice was low, close, as if he instinctively knew Mike had a full set of percussionists in his head.
Mike managed to nod a bit and whispered, “How much Diazepam did you pour in to me, man?”
There was a soft chuckle accompanied with a sigh of relief from the doctor, “Actually nothing, but you had a small seizure and you were unconscious for a couple of minutes, you’re probably feeling the effects of that. I take it this means your memory is somewhat back? What do you remember?”
Waking up in Wraith cell. Confinement, Hunger. Tight place with no way to move. Transport to another ship. Rhiase. Pain. Confusion. So much pain. Cold… then pain gone – everything gone. Darkness. Yorvis. Soft nozzles of Elle… It all ran through his head within a split second. “Everything…” he managed to say before he needed to swallow back the nausea. “I remember everything.”
Andy gave him a soft pat on the arm, “Ok, we’ll talk about that later. How does your head feel?”
“Bad hung over?”
“Like you know anything about that,” Andy said in an amused tone, “Look, I’ll give you a quick once over as we wait for transport up to the infirmary, then it’s off to a CT. So just hang in there and I’ll have you sorted out as soon as I can. Ok?”
“Whatever.” Mike mumbled, relieved that, even if he didn’t fire on all cylinders for now, he was aware of it, and for the moment, he took that as a good sign.

"I've got Coops here Andy, I don't think we'll need any orderlies. We'll be there in a jiffy."

                                         **********************

"You're pullin rank on me Andy?" She still had time for levity. "Next or last its all the same...." She flopped back down again. "...yeah a nice taxi ride would be good, I don't think I could walk a foot right now and please remind me to send a harshly worded email to the El'Dari some time soon, these 'tricks' they gave me should have come with a warning label." She rubbed her temples while looking at Mike. "Hey.." Cate dug him gently in the ribs. "It was a nice little holiday without the worry of Visas and Passports wasn't it?" As serious as it was, Mike will in time make a full recovery. Cate on the other hand had another kind of mending to do. This was dangerous for her and she had to be careful. There are others who might have the ability to walk in dreams, others she may not want to meet.

Andy picked up the radio and replied, “Copy that. Flemming out.” Then turning to Cate, he said with a hint of a smile, “You’d bet I'm pulling rank! Doubt you’d cooperate if I didn’t.”
Focusing back on Mike, he ran through a battery of neuro check on a slightly reluctant patient.

Mike really did his best to be cooperative, but when Andy pulled out the small flashlight, he finally had enough and batted it away, not being able to for the love of his life open his eyes straight in to the all too bright light.
Effusively, he placed an arm over his eyes as he quietly replied to Cate, “Trust me, I’d even take 20 security checks and a ride on a C-130 any day before I do this again. So agreed on the waning label. Make it a big sign, because I feel like crap.”
That last remark made Andy actually raise a brow. As he recalled it, he’d never ever heard Mike complain about anything when it came to physical pain for as long as he’d know him.

Making every effort she could muster to make one of her classic cheeky insubordinate faces and failing miserably, Cate resigned herself to her fate and the good hands of Andy. "A hopeless cause either way, right now I have about as much fight in me as a rag doll. I wouldn't even resist Andy if you wanted to turn me over your knee."

The rolling sound of a gurney or two came down the hallway, one handled by Kim and the other by Cooper.

"Sorry we took so long Andy, some of our gurney's are down in maintenance so we had to take these from post op. Hi Cate." The other blonde said to an old friend. "Banged up again I see, with no visible injuries hmmm?" Although she knew the score, Kim was as much of a tease as her opposite on her day. "Mike we'll take care of you buddy, this is the express to happiness." She said tapping the side of the stretcher.

"It's all in the head Kimbo." She stretched her long neck to see Cooper bringing up the rear. "Mike, its almost like old times isn't it, here comes the Alpha site's best volley ball player, even if he does cheat." At last something passing for a grin creased the sides of her mouth. "Take it from me, I'll be right next to you on that Mike."

Andy offered Kim a small grin as she entered the room, “It’s alright. We’ve been keeping ourselves busy. Help Cate, will you? Coops, give me a hand over here.”
“No rush on my account, Kim,” mumbled Mike. “Not going anywhere.”

Turning to Mike, as the gurney was rolled in to position in front of the couch, Andy said, “Alright, take it easy now, ok?”
While Mike understood the fuss and would probably act much in the same way, he still hated being in the receiving end, but he sat up slowly, not wanting to aggravate the head ace any further and noticed that for what it was worth, at least he didn’t feel light headed. Taking a deep breath he then moved over, slumped down on the gurney and before he knew it, he was laying down again, eyes closed against the offending lights in the ceiling.
“Yeah, right. It’s cheating to hit a ball so that it more or less licks the net and ends up on the far back line. I keep telling you, baseball is fairer. Less opportunity to cheat.”

With an affirmative nod to Andy, Cooper bent to the task to be ready to assist his friend if needed. The man wasn't physically impaired so in the end it was only a morale booster he could give. "Between you and me Mike, if we don't pass anyone on the way I will not tell a soul why you're on this gurney. Because honestly buddy, no one will believe it no matter which way we spin it." He had to lean down to keep his voice low, not even wanting the other three to hear him, not that it mattered all that much if they did. "Alright then, patient one ready to roll," he took a quick glance over at Cate, she was in much the same condition. "I'll make mention here now Cate and you as well Kim, our charges here should experience the best ride we can give them, right?" On another day and under other circumstances there were times some of the Nursing staff when lumbered with gurney pushing lost all decorum, making a two litter squad into a race of sorts.

There was unusually no fuss nor drama from Cate, she actually and willingly allowed Kim to assist her onto the bed of the gurney. Things were looking up then in the eyes of the base's chief nurse and stitcher upper. "Well I am impressed." Tilting her head up to where Cooper stood with Andy and Mike on the other wheeled contraption, she had to smile just a little. "Do you know the stories of you lot from the Alpha site did make good reading once all the classified files were cleared; I think you could make quite a good television show from your adventures out there back then." And she didn't know the half of it. "Andy if you like I'll get a CT unit set up when we get back. I know that Karen has gone home but I'm fairly handy at running it now." That will help to rule out a lot of things.

"Did you hear that Coops?" Cate managed to say from her backwards position, the pillow was most welcome. "Adventures, well sporting adventures aside there were moments and when all is said and done we did have a ball didn't we? Mike...." She turned her head. "...I think I'll teach you cricket then, we can square it up with the big guy for sure." Was that a wink? Surely not!

Mike gave Coops a grateful nod about keeping the transport as low key as possible, but then replied in a low voice. “I promise you, if you run with this gurney, taking the corners on two wheels, it’ll be bed pan duty for the rest of your life.”
Andy released the brakes with a smile, feeling much better now when Mike was answering back more and more even though his discomfort was still apparent.
Looking over to Kim, he said, “Please do, and if you can run ahead of us and have everything set up for us as we arrive, I’ll owe you. Between Coops and me I think we can handle these two on our own from now on.”
Squinting towards Cate, Mike threw out a hand in an averting gesture, “You already tried that, didn’t work out very well. Too many bruises,” before pointing towards his temple with a hint of a grin, “I remember now…”
Without giving Cate a chance to reply, Andy pushed Mike’s gurney out of the room, heading towards the elevator, confident that Coops would follow suite.

"Cars and driving were never my thing Mike, given the choice I'd rather hoist you on my back if needed and carry you. I think though we're both past that stage in life, unless of course you two want to make a challenge of it?" He could see it now, Andy with Cate on his back, him with Mike and a race through the halls then getting caught by the base CO. Yes, old times were fun up to a point when suddenly you've found you've grown up. "Nice and steady buddy, nice and steady." He half grinned when Cate did mention cricket, there certainly wouldn't be a contest there, for during his high school years in Australia he tried the game and failed miserably.

The only place left for her to look was here in the Officer's lounge since none of SG4 were in their rooms and none had left the base. Cheryl's guess was right on the money as she entered this hallowed space, at the same time coincidentally that Cate had returned from the Gate room. "Commander I am glad you are here. Colonel Ovcharenko, these are your new orders." She handed over the very official document signed by the Admiral and General O'Neill. "You are to take up command of the UNS Victory forthwith. Her testing trials have been completed and she is ready for service."

"Say what?" Cate stood there perplexed. "So who's going to be our fearless leader then?"

 "You are Commander."

"Oh my god!" Cate facepalmed herself.

Flynn had been enjoying a bit of downtime.   She had even tried finding her brother, but apparently he was out on a mission.   So that left her here with her team.  Her eyes widened though as they were told the news.  "Congrats to both of you," she grinned.  "I think.  Or should we be worried?"

The team was relaxing in the officer's lounge when Lt Brownwell entered the room. To the surprise of all gathered, she was carrying a set of official orders transferring Colonel Ovcharenko to command of the Victory. William was aware trials were ending soon, but didn't pay much attention to the speculation over her Commanding Officer.

With the promotion of the team's CO that put Cate into the leadership role of SG-4.

"Just remember us grunts on the ground Colonel, while your zipping around in your Starship."

He rummaged around in the fridge for a minute before coming up empty handed.
"I say we go change into something less conspicuous and find a place to celebrate the promotions."

To say that Will would've acquired a few hours of sleep would've been an overstatement; to say that he wanted a bit of coffee to wake up would've been an understatement though. The truth was that he had just returned to the SGC after spending 6 weeks of training at the Alpha site. His room wasn't entirely in order either, the things still lying around in crates and boxes  scattered all across the room, and even if he managed to set up some stuff, in the end those extra hours of sleep were deemed to be of more vital interest.

After taking a quick, cold shower and putting on the base attire, his first task in the early morning was to seek out Lt. Brownwell, as per instructions that appeared in his email. It was easier said than done, considering she wasn't in her room when he stopped by it and after a few yet frantic knocks on the door, the frustrations that came hand in hand became more noticible. "Oh God, I could really use an espresso shot or two..." Will told himself.

Luckily once he paid a visit to the payroll office where she was supposed to be at, Brownwell wasn't there either but at least an SF directed him to the Officer's lounge. He finally managed to catch her at the entrance, much to his relief and his face shone up a little every time a beautiful woman greeted him in the morning. "Lt. Brownwell I assume? I'm Major Lebel, at your service..." he initially said, kissing her hand in the process, as the courtly gentleman he was. "As instructed per email, I am to report to you in the morning at first notice." he said smiling.

Once awaiting her reply, he spotted a set of characters he'd been allowed to preview through a database; His assigned team, SG4. "This is 'Rosey' once again isn't it?". Will couldn't help but draw parallels between the SGC and Institut Le Rosey, as the job descriptions were perhaps radically different but nevertheless both consisted of new people, foreigners in fact, he had to learn to get to know, make useful contacts and friends and so on, which wasn't going to be an issue he hoped.

"Lt. Brownwell, would you like to have a cup of coffee with me some time? Hope it isn't much to ask but besides the fact that I'm about to have these people as members in my first team, I wouldn't mind gaining a friend or two to show me how to handle the ropes, heh." Will asked her after the briefing was over with.

The kid was literally knocked off her feet. A thought flashed through her mind on the one hand 'why aren't American guys like this' and then on the other hand she was in a mild state of shock, no one, not in all her entire very short 25 years had anyone treated her with such gentlemanly respect...oh well that didn't include that ever so dreamy country boy who worked at the Candy store in Springs, he was from Nashville, so it was kind of an expectation as far as that went. Such a pity he had moved on to other things, like long distance trucking. "Er, ah..." She stumbled over her tongue, tactfully withdrawing her hand. "Yes I am Major and I'm pleased to meet you. I must say you're early, but that's a good thing you found me here." Looking quite embarrassed still her eyes were drawn to SG-4 for a little help, which was at hand.

"You should be Flynn, hell I'm worried. Whoever in their right mind would put me in that position, right Lena? Sounds like some twisted conspiracy to me." With that in mind she gave Troy a thumbs up. "Well since you mentioned it William, as my first act I'm making you XO mate and you're buying!"  Then a new bloke wandered in, Cate had one ear on her team and the other one Cheryl's with her new companion. As she was but 5 feet away she turned then took a step forward. "Who's your new bud Cheryl?" Ever inquisitive, though she heard it all, confirmation was the key to good intel.

The girl still looked startled as her mouth moved slowly. "Well, um, Wing Commander MacGregor this is Major Wilhelm Lebel, he's only just returned from his Alpha site training and having passed that more than adequately, command felt that he was an appropriate choice to fill out your team numbers."

"Wait? You're putting a rawbone on SG-4? No offense Major." Those blue/green eyes focused on the Lieutenant. "Brownwell this is a not quite how things are done you know, please explain."

While she was used to being put on the spot, being looked down upon by the Aussie could be slightly intimidating. Luckily for Cheryl it had all been worked out in advance. "While on his SG team training ma'am, his class was caught up in the fighting south of the Alpha site, his file is all there if you want to go through with it. He performed above expectations Commander and the decision was made by General O'Neill and Admiral McRaven."

"Hmmm, well we'll just have to see won't we." Cate held out her hand. "Forgive me for my bluntness Major, our team is not quite what you'd expect, we're often doing operations not given to other teams for the exception of SG-1. So you can understand my hesitation. Officially, welcome to SG-4. Behind me is Doctor Flynn Hart our Science Officer and Lieutenant William Troy, team medic and now XO. The redhead there is Colonel Elena Ovcharenko, our former CO and now Captain of the Victory."

Cheryl took a step back. "Major I'll take you up on that, there are a few things I need to go over with you. Say in about an hour?"

"I'm looking forward to that cup of coffee; shall we meet in the caféteria later then?" he told Cheryl with a smile whilst patting her on the shoulder. Now that she was out of the Picture temporarily, it was time to mingle with his team members, oh how exciting this was going to be surely, saving the world and kicking alien butt with these people. Of course there was a lot to live up to, so Will felt that he needed to take every chance at showing what he was capable of.

"No need to apologise, Winger Commander Macgregor. I appreciate those who often speak of the truth, no matter how blunt it may sound. I would also like to extend my congratulations to Col. Ovcharenko here for the promotion; a celebration is in right order in fact. Greetings to you as well Dr. Hart and Lt. Troy." Will stepped forward and kissed the hands of the women, whilst simply shaking hands with the Lieutenant.

"I know still yet have to prove myself to all of you, a worthy member of the team and all, as a battle or two isn't enough. Hopefully in time my efforts and contributions will make themselves known to everyone and that SG4's reputation will be intact." He then paused for a moment to let it all sink in.

"Anyone interested in a Fondue evening in the future?" he asked spontaneously.

Flynn grinned at Cate.  The team was going to get interesting but she had a feeling Will would keep them in line now that he was XO.  She turned as she heard Cheryl and a voice she didn't recognize.

The next shock came when they learned he was their new team member and a gentleman if the kiss to the hand was any indication,  her cheeks reddened a bit.  She wasn't used to men like that.  "Fondue huh? Count me in,"

Elena was enjoying the rare case of a downtime given to her team, especially since it was going to run out quite soon and more missions, possibly suicidal, would follow. To get the most of the stress out of her system and recharge for what's about to come, she was chilling out in the lounge with the rest of her team, engaged in a lively chatter and laughter. But enter Cheryl Brownwell and instead of a hello drop a bomb. Lena rushed from her chair and snatched the clipboard, leafing through three pages long document, hearing confirmation of what that young Lieutenant was saying.

"Yeah, Cate, it clearly says it here - I am to take command of our newest ship, and you are to finally stop stepping onto my toes and fill into my shoes instead...

Russian felt the urge to join her friend, who had just turned into former XO, in a facepalm, but the utter feeling of joy had her overwhelmed and her eyes glistening and sparkling like a necklace of diamonds. Her quiet talks and prayers were answered at the very long last, and she was going to be able to fly around that lovely space, dark and deep, exploring the secrets it has to keep, and it would be her ship to fly around, her own. The others in the room were not going to leave the woman in the state of dreaming with a silly beam on her face, however, and congratulations shot out.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

"Thank you, Flynn, and yeah, you ought to be worried..."

A smug grin sneaked on Elena's face as she imagined what kind of a commanding officer Cate is going to be.

"Don't worry, Will, I won't. You, in turn, don't forget to video Cate's epic fails as she tries to be me, and send them over to me regular, you hear?" She giggled under her breath. "But, yeah, you're right, it does call on a trip someplace to celebrate right now, because after that I'm going to have a lot of reading to go through... Heck, I might even consider wearing a dress tonight!"

She laughed just before an entirely new face waltzed onto the scene.

((I have no idea WTF is going on, but until we fix the problem, big posts are no-no and are to be split like I am doing it here))

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

The silence hung in the air for a little while, and Lena's eyebrows climbed up toward her hair, bemused, as she watched the man introduce himself and kiss Cheryl's hand like in some old movie. The situation defused quickly, though. Cate was finally past her facepalm phase and went into a blurry of orders and questions like she was in command already. Wait, Elena told herself, she IS in command now.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Perplexed that the newcomer went and outright kissed hands of all the women he met caught Elena off-guard and she was unable to jerk her hand back when he pulled the same trick on her. She balled it in a fist and back into a palm several times trying to get rid of the weird sensation. Chivalrous or not, it was an intrusion into personal space of someone who's getting shot at daily for money, by someone who is a total stranger, so it was his luck that she was, after all, ready to tame her instincts and not kick him one. Redhead did however gave him an evil eye before finding strength to soften her reaction and speaking back.

"Thank you, Major. And, Cate, looks like your team ain't going to be all-female ever again like it used to be. Unless we fix a thing... Or two... In here."

She let the newcomer know with her eyes and a smile that it was just a joke, aimed to add a bit more cheer in the air, while her mind went spinning. She never expected this position, so it was now a hell lot of a catch up job. What class of the ship Victory was? What was she capable of? What made her tick? Who's on the crew? Does she have any choice in who's going to be XO, Chief of Security, Chief Engineer? And what would be her first mission? Plus there was that tiny sting of her Motherland watching how she'd be captaining that ship.

"Heck, guys, let's go get a really strong drink before my head spins off of my neck. Oh, and does anybody know what kind of ship Victory is exactly and how bad I will have my arse whipped if we go rogue to some distant stars?"

Not only did the departure of Elena elevate Cate to the position of team leader, but the Commander turned around and promoted Troy to team XO. It made sense, of the remaining team members he was the most experienced, but like the other revelations it came as a surprise.

He smiled at Elena's response to his comment.
"Will do Colonel, or should I call you Captain? I'll add a GoPro to the equipment load, and send you the footage when the Victory comes in comm range of Earth.

He then addressed being made second in command.
"XO, huh. Aye, Aye Commander. Guess I can now bark orders and patch you up when things go sideways."

About then a new face walked in the door, who according to Lieutenant Brownwell was the newest addition to SG-4. The leadership certainly didn't waste any time, he knew of a few instances with the 'real' military where it took a month or more for vacancies to be filled.

"Welcome to the team Major. I'm Lieutenant William Troy, United States Air Force."

The man's accent was European, but he couldn't quite place the origin. He thought about asking, but was sure that info would come out during the course of the evening.

"Since I'm buying, I recommend the Dusty Dragon. Not a mainstream establishment but the owner's prior military. There's a chance we can get the side room, or at least a corner booth."

Still feeling slightly taken aback, Cheryl faltered out a reply as best as she could. "Well sir if I have time I'd like that." She had to admit he did have something about him, although the age factor might make her have second thoughts later on. Still it'd be nice to talk to someone new. "I must go, I'll see you all later and Colonel Ovcharenko, Commander MacGregor, congratulations to you both." Making a hasty retreat with a blush on her cheeks, Cheryl moved as if she had somewhere important to go.

Pulling her hand away slowly from the Major, she felt odd, but not in a bad way. "Funny kid that one." Cate said earnestly after the girl left. "Par for the course Major because you're likely to hear me say many things I really shouldn't then find myself having to apologise for it later on. The old saying applies, putting my mouth into gear while the brain is in neutral or something to that effect."

One thing for certain she was going to miss Lena, they'd been a team for near on four years now and that was going to be hard to ignore. She gave her a warm hug, one of many over the years as they had watched each other's back, either one saving the other's neck more times than both of them could count. "Bugger all that Lena, I am going to miss you, you know that." She didn't want to dwell on all the other factors, her head was swimming enough already. "Victory is sister ship to the Dreadnought, so the same I'd say although I believe she's said to be slightly faster as they made changes after the Dread was proven." She looked around at all of them smiling innocently. "Well change is on the wind and I suppose it had to happen sooner rather than later, but we're balanced at least, two for two. Worried? I think we should be." She had no time for all this gender nonsense, if they could do the job, that was all that counted.

It was a lot to take in all at once, emotions were filled with events. "You'll get the picture soon enough Major as to how we operate so you'll get your chance. And I'm sorry to rain on our own parade here, but we are on duty for the time being so the rest and recreation may have to wait a bit. Hopefully we can kill two birds with one stone tonight if we're not called away, that is if the Dusty Dragon serves Fondue."

"No complaints from me," Flynn grinned.  "As long as we can slip away." She hoped they didn't get called away.  Although one never knew.  Anything could happen.  She was looking forward to getting to know the Major and seeing how they all meshed.

"Bye lieutent," she called after Cheryl.  She hid a giggle though as she noticed Cheryl's blush.  She then turned back to the rest of her team.  "Stay in touch,  Elena, " she said.  "It won't be the same without you."

Wilhelm stayed with his new team in the lounge for a good hour, trying to get to know them as much as possible, even if one wouldn't have delved into all the layers in a first encounter. Still, he started to feel much more comfortable around the people whose lives he had to depend upon and vice versa.

"So, unless there's something else important you'd wish to discuss, I believe it's time for me to head to the caféteria and have my coffee date with our lovely Paymaster." After waiting for additional topics to be discussed, it was time to exit said lounge. "I bid all of you farewell for now until then." he then saluted before heading to the door.

*PA Announcement*

"SG4, please report to the Control room mission ready immediately. That is all."

As soon as Wilhelm had made his move, that inevitable call came through. Cate went from all casual and relaxed to a SG team leader in a heart beat. "Sorry people we have work to do, we'll have to take a rain check on the fun department. Lena, don't forget I do have email." She hugged her one more time then headed for the door. "Major! Wait up, we're on call." She turned to her teammates. "Gear up as quick as we can, then straight to the Control room."

He was about to call up the Dusty Dragon, but the announcement changed those plans. Instead he grabbed a bottle of grape juice from the fridge and a couple of protein bars from a shelf. Opening one, he tossed the others in a pant pocket.

"No one can complain the SGC doesn't keep one busy."

Flynn silently groaned.  Well so much for a bit of downtime.  Hopefully soon and hopefully whatever this mission was wouldn't get them into too much trouble.  The young woman shook her head.  "No.  They certainly keep us busy and guessing."
