Title: Stargate Command-Level 21-Chapel
Post by: Mim on July 05, 2013, 01:48:00 AM
The Chapel of Stargate Command is situated just down the hallway from Med Bay. It is multidenominational and everyone is welcome at any time, 24 hours a day. If the base Padre, Colonel Francis McCarthy is not here, you can always find her in her rooms.

*The Chaplain is in*

{Colonel Francis 'Fran' McCarthy-Chaplain} NPC

Three good books read and a nice tipple of sacrament wine and Fran was feeling rather chipper. They were short books, barely a hundred pages each and all on English history during the medieval period, her favorite subject. Then, just as she was about to go and prepare the chapel for the Presidents visit, her desk radio went off. Annoyed, she tapped the switch. "May I remind you Sean of a little protocol. I'm your chaplain, not one of your subordinates." She added a hearty chuckle to the end. "So you managed to convince some poor unfortunate lass that the wolf was worthy of being leashed?" While she was talking she was going through her desk drawer, he was in luck, she had three licences there with her. "Save my poor aching pegs man, and bring your lady up here so I can do it properly alright?"

Col George Sanderson

George had been playing basket ball with one of the bigger US Marines on base. And with in two muinetes he had been smacked in the face and had a split lip and blood running from his left nostral. He walked in to the Chapel and pulled off his Maroon Para Berra and shoved it in to his BDU pocket. George wasnt a religious man, but the Chapel gave him a place to think. He nodded to Colonel McCarthy. "Padre." he said sitting down on one of the back seats.

"I'm not going anywhere Sean." Fran told him and stood from her desk, license in hand and a nice pen, one of her fathers in fact. She started walking into the chapel area proper, when one of her favorites came in, George. He had been a regular lately. Fran nodded at him and then followed behind and sat near him. At the tone of a whisper she spoke. "Who was it this time George, or more rightly what? Soccer? Basketball?" She pulled out a hanky and handed it to him. "I would put it to say, that our Lord sent you here, nice timing." That was a little cryptic, but then her former Air Force occupation of nearly twenty years ago taught her that."

Sean exited the elevator first as was custom for all senior-ranking officers to do so, and together with Ruby and Sarah made their way down the hall before entering the Base Chapel.  But what surprised him was seeing Col. Sanderson sitting towards the back of the chapel.  Sean nodded at the man, then looked at Colonel Francis.  "I apologize for the short notice, Padre, and normally you would want a bit more time to prepare for such an event.  We've an unexpected guest arriving soon, someone from an organization that we all don't particularly care for, and so this will have to be a short ceremony."  He held onto Sarah's hand.  "But as you can probably guess, Lieutenant Colonel Devlin was the one who managed to leash this old sea wolf, as you so quaintly put it, and we were strongly advised by a certain service secretary to tie the knot.  We don't have any rings, but we do plan on a more formal ceremony at some point in the near future."

Sean looked over his shoulder at Sanderson.  "You may as well be our other witness to this, Sanderson," he said to the British Detachment Commander.

George took the hanky offered, but then passed it back, not wanting to get blood stains all over it. He then looked up as the Admiral arrived and jumped up as best he could with a salute. "Sir." he then looked around confused.

"Wait, sir, Im sure there is a rule against this somewhere." he shrugged. "Not trying to ruin this day for you sir, but you are one to stick to the rules. If you get Married wont one of you be transferred?" he shrugged a little He was talking to the guy who had busted Gunnery Sergeant Cooper back to Staff Sergeant for a kiss Lt Lawler had given him spur of the moment. SO if him and Sarah were getting married, they must have been fratanising some where down the line. but unlike Davidson George didnt stick to the rules like a bible so wasnt going to complain.

Sarah did her best to keep up with Sean.  He was on a mission and when he got that like it wasn't always easy to keep up.  Although she liked this mission.  They were finally going to get married.  The young woman smiled when Sean mentioned that they would have a bigger ceremony later.  Good.  She wanted an excuse to wear a nice dress and be with all her friends.

Sarah's face paled at George's words.  "Oh, I hope not," she said, looking up at Sean.  Would they make one of them transfer?  She hadn't thought of that when she had agreed to marry Sean.  She didn't want to be separated from him.

George looked at the Lt Col for a moment and shrugged. "Listen, I dont want to see you two broken up, but isnt that standered Operating Procedure in your armed forces? If your in a relationship with somebody else you cant be in the same chain of command?"

Lt Gen Jack O'Neill, USAF (NPC)
Secretary of the Navy Ramon Mobius (NPC)
Secretary of Defense Richard Gates III (NPC)

<<Jack, Gates, Mobius from Level 15>>

The elevator doors opened and all three men filed out, and walked down the corridor.  Voices could be heard coming from the open doors of the chapel, and at least two of them were distinctively British.  One male, one female.

"Not trying to ruin this day for you sir, but you are one to stick to the rules. If you get Married wont one of you be transferred?"

"Oh, I hope not,"

"Listen, I dont want to see you two broken up, but isnt that standered Operating Procedure in your armed forces? If your in a relationship with somebody else you cant be in the same chain of command?"

Gates looked at his two ertzwhile companions, then put on his most stern look, his offended face, and stepped through the doorway.  "While it's typically frowned upon for two married people to be in the same chain of command, Colonel Sanderson, let alone the same office; because Admiral Davidson chose Lieutenant Colonel Devlin to be his first officer, this places them in a very unique situation.  This however, does NOT excuse them from their irresponsible behavior while they were stationed together in Afghanistan."  Gates glared at them both, and Sean was already at attention; the former Navy SEAL already feeling his cheeks burn.  "And prior to my being appointed as the Secretary of Defense, my predecessor had one of his underlings revise the procedures for military personnel assignments to address the issue of having two people, both in the military, being a married couple.  I expect both Admiral Davidson and Lieutenant Colonel Devlin to carry out their duties as commissioned officers, and as the commanding officer and executive officer of Stargate Command.  While this may be considered as a 'combat zone'; that procedure doesn't state that either one of them has to be transferred.  Not unless they have children at some point, and can prove there's a hardship case.  But otherwise, they're expected to maintain decorum at all times, and that means refraining from any public displays of affection while in uniform.  I also expect them to behave, and for Admiral Davidson to not show any sign of favoritism towards his soon-to-be wedded wife."

"Earlier today, I had Secretary Mobius issue my ultimatum to Admiral Davidson and Lieutenant Colonel Devlin.  That's why they're here in this Chapel.  Rather than dismiss them both from service, especially in Admiral Davidson's case, they had the option of getting married instead.  Only I didn't expect it to be this soon.  Admiral, any reason why you and Lieutenant Colonel Devlin are doing this right now?"

Sean worked his jaw for a moment before answering.  "I received an email from Matthew Keller, sir.  One of the civilian contractors filed a complaint with the IOA about the orders he was given.  Mr Keller emailed me to inform me that while he wasn't pleased with my apparent lack of maintaining order, he was sending a representative to investigate.  That person is expected to arrive later today."

Mobius and Gates exchanged glances, and Jack nearly swore aloud.  "Damn him," Jack muttered under his breath, and Gates caught it.  "Excuse me, General?"

"It was Doctor Rodney McKay, sir," Jack said, clearly unhappy.  "He must have contacted someone within the IOA, and Keller caught wind of it.  I told Doctor McKay that his orders to be assigned to the Saggitta came from the IOA themselves."

Gates shook his head.  "And did Admiral Davidson hand down those orders?"

"Aye, sir, I did," Sean replied.

Gates tsked.  "Get this little ceremony done as quickly as possible," he said to Sean and Sarah.  "Then come up with a plan to get this IOA rep the information he needs so he doesn't cause any trouble, but at the same time to keep him as preoccupied as possible.  How long will he or she be here for, Admiral?"

"Until Keller decides that the rep needs to leave, sir," Sean replied.

"Which basically means he's being attached to the SGC."  Gates started to muse thoughtfully, then looked at Colonel McCarthy.  "Padre, if you don't mind making this as quick as you can, after the ceremony I'll need to speak with our newlyweds in my office."  He then took a seat, and Mobius and Jack likewise found seats and waited.

Sarah closed her eyes briefly.  George was right, she just hadn't thought about that.  She turned and quickly stood at attention when the doors opened to reveal a couple more guests.  Well, apparently this wedding was going to be bigger then either of them had thought.

"Sir, both the Admiral and myself will keep hands to ourselves and make sure that we are professional at all times."  She cast a glance at Sean.  "I've never known Admiral Davidson to play favorites and I highly doubt he'll start now."

She frowned slightly when Sean mentioned about the representative for the IOA coming.  Oh, this was not going to be good at all.  She had a feeling they were all soon to find themselves in hot water one way or another.

Jack was the one who spoke up when George asked his question about having to be here.

"Didn't realize you weren't one for weddings, Colonel," he said, somewhat amused at the Brit's unsettledness. "But no one's making you stay, either."  Sean shook his head and nodded at George, indicating that he was free to leave if he chose, then Sarah voiced her confirmation about behaving properly when Gates gave the soon-to-be-married pair a firm warning.

George shrugged. "Well sir I..." he stopped reallising he was about to blurt out about Fred and Flynn. Fred had confided in him after asking 'Is it possible for you to marry some people.' Also Fred had been worrying about praposing to her and about wearing his fatuiges like he wanted and not a dress uniform as expected. So didn't want to be around more wedding people. "Never mind." he said giving a quick salute before nodding to the Secretary and headed out, wondering if the Secretary s found being saluted by the highest ranking british officer on base with a blood covered lip and face had affected there judgement of Sean, then decided if it did they were more than likely arse holes.

Sean didn't say anything when Sanderson started to speak, but was rather curious that the British Detachment Commander stopped in mid-sentence.  Jack, Gates, and Mobius all exchanged glances, but before Jack could say anything he heard a "never mind" followed by a salute then a nod to one of the Secretaries before the Brit departed.

Gates shook his head.  "I wasn't aware that I was that unpopular," he blanched, and Sean cleared his throat.  An eyebrow arched over the Secretary of Defense's eye, which prompted Sean to ask, "Permission to speak freely, sir?"

"Go ahead, Admiral.  This should be good."

"About six months ago, there was an incident that I was witness to.  I had to officially reprimand two people under my command for violating the fraternization policy.  Over a public display of affection."

"What was this...'display of affection'?"

"A kiss, sir.  A deliberate kiss.  Instead of charging First Lieutenant Lawler and Gunnery Sergeant Cooper with violating the no-fraternization rule, I would have probably just given them a verbal reprimand had the lieutenant not been insubordinate towards me and towards Lieutenant Colonel Devlin.  Lawler didn't exactly leave me with a whole lot of options with her attitude."

Gates had to think about that one, when Mobius spoke up.  "Ah, that was why you didn't recommend her for promotion to Captain.  Although you never said anything about the fraternization, just the fact she was insubordinate and was displaying conduct unbecoming of an officer.  Twice in one day."  Mobius shook his head.  "You realize, Admiral, that by withholding that information, I could always have you charged with conduct unbecoming of a flag officer."

"I wanted to keep that off of Lawler's record, sir.  I wanted to give her a chance to redeem herself.  As for Gunnery Sergeant Cooper, I felt it best to bust him down to E-5 as I thought he knew better than to let himself be drawn in like that.  He's recently been re-promoted to E-6, and is trying his hardest to regain his former rank."

"Where are they now, Admiral?"

"SG-Eight's been dispatched with SG-Twelve off-world, sir.  Trying to track down a warlord, from what I understand."

Gates narrowed his eyes as if thinking hard, then nodded.  "Admiral, provided that rep doesn't try anything foolish, I want Lawler promoted to Captain and Cooper's former rank reinstated as soon as they return.  I'll have Mobius draw up the paperwork."

"Aye, aye, sir."

Sarah's eyes widened and she glanced at Sean.  "Uh-oh," she said.  Now what were they going to do?  Sean would have to meet with the IOA representative.  Yet they hadn't had time to actually perform the wedding ceremony.  Oh what a mess.

After being interrupted, then having people talk over the top of her head, really ticked Fran off. She was a patient god fearing woman, but this was her chapel, her turf and no one, not even the President had authority over her in here. "Shut the hell up all of you. George!" She yelled at the man's back. "Come back here please." Fran took a deep breath. "Now I don't give a rat's behind of what has gone on before today, or what will happened tomorrow or the day after that. When you come into my chapel, you do so with all the respect it deserves. That means in a word...silence unless I speak to you. Have you all got that? Now, Sean and Sarah, I need to speak with you both alone, in my office. The rest of you may sit and wait if you wish... in silence!" Yeah, she was p*ssed.

Sean simply closed his eyes and shook his head.  Sanderson, as competent of a commissioned officer as he was, always had a mind of his own.  Sure, it was never a bad thing to be somewhat independent-minded, but to blatantly disregard the Chaplain like that was just asking for trouble.  In his opinion.

Not exactly the type of person the head of Stargate wanted in a subordinate as a possible candidate to replace him, when it was time to step down.

Jack, Gates, and Mobius all looked at each other, then looked over at the Chaplain when she issued her order for silence.  It was her domain, so they pretty much all shrugged and nodded.  Sean, in the meantime, started to usher Sarah into Colonel McCarthy's office.

Sarah glanced back at George as he started to walk out.  "Colonel Sanderson, could you please come back?" she asked.  She liked the guy after all.  He was nice.  Her face flushed slightly though when it was obvious that Fran was ticked.  Never a good thing.  She quietly let Sean lead into the office, wondering just what Fran needed to speak to them about.

He closed his eyes and lent back and though about all the thinge Fred had asked him about marriages. even though George had no idea. he had a partner, but wasnt married, so didnt know. "Don't you even think about leaving." Francis told George before she followed the other two. Once the two of them were within her office, Fran closed the door quietly and went behind her desk. "Sit down please, Sarah, Sean. There are a few things we need to go over, one or two of those are by-laws of the state, the other personal questions that as your chaplain I am obliged to ask you. Once we've done that, we'll call two witnesses in, then if I am satisfied, you'll be man and wife withing the hour." Just like that, no fuss, no pack drill. But then that is Francis, that is who she was.

"I hate beaurocracy don't you?" Fran started as she opened a drawer on her desk. The marriage license she had in her hand and laid it out in front of them. "It's standard procedure, nothing to be concerned with really, simply put the State of Colorado wants to know that the two of you are meant for each other and won't head off to Tijuana  for a quicky divorce next week." From the drawer she took out a simple question and answer form that she would submit to the State Licensing Board immediately after the ceremony, that is after two others signed it apart from the newly weds. "How long have you known each other?" That was the first of a few questions.

"Padre," Sean said with a heavy sigh, "I've dealt with bureaucracy for nearly forty years.  If you count my time at the Naval Academy.  Never did care much for politicians, nor politics in general.  But it's a game that, as a flag officer, I have to play almost every day unless I happen to be on some personal time-off.  Which, these days, is extremely rare."  He shook his head.  "I'll just be glad once this IOA rep who's now on-site is satisfied enough that he sends an all-clear report to his boss, so I can get back to being a commanding officer again."

Sean listened as Colonel McCarthy explained the gist of the by-laws, that neither him nor Sarah were planning on a Mexican divorce within the week.  He couldn't help but grunt with contempt at the prospect, but looked at his executive officer and wife-to-be at the first question.  Just how long had they known each other, anyway?  By his estimate, it was at least since 2003, when they'd first met in the Middle East.  "I'd say probably eight years, at least," he said after a moment's thought.  "Definitely not less than seven, though."

Sarah relaxed in her chair a bit once Fran said that it was just routine questions.  That should be simple enough at least.  She was caught off guard by Fran's first question.  She wrinkled her brow a bit as she tried to remember exactly when they had met.  "I would think closer to eight," she agreed with Sean.  Had it really been that long?  It didn't feel that way.

Sarah shook her head.  "I'm not playing on running off anytime soon," she answered with a smile, nudging Sean's side.  She would have his head if he even thought about doing that.

Sean leaned back in his chair and thought for a moment.  It definitely seemed like a lifetime ago, when he and Sarah first met and wound up in each other's arms, outside of prying eyes.  That relationship burned out, but there was still the proverbial glowing embers that remained.  Now that the fire had been rekindled, it was more of a steady flame this time around.  But she was right.  It was closer to eight, and Sean nodded his agreement.  "Sounds about right."  He then looked at Colonel McCarthy.  "Eight years, then."

He felt his fiancee nudge him and declare that she wasn't planning on running off anytime soon, and he turned to give her a mock glare.  "You go running off, Sarah Devlin, and I'll find you no matter where you may try and hide."  Sean's mock glare turned to a playful wink.

Fran tapped her lips with her BIC pen, hmmming as she did so. She looked up and eyed both of them. "Eight years huh? So I would have to say the both of you have known each other intimately? That's off the books by the way. Alright, both of you. I'll sign off the waiver, as I'm satisfied you meet the requirements of the state, Sean, go call Jack and George in here please, they have to physically witness the two of your signatures." She slid the licence over to them with a fine ink pen.

Sarah blushed slightly, but nodded.  Apparently it was obvious and Mobius had already found that out as well.  Her eyes widened as the message came across the intercom.  She turned to her fiance.  "Sean?" she asked, ready to get up herself.  This didn't sound good at all.  She just hoped that this wasn't how their marriage was always going to be.

Sean was about to pick up the pen and sighed when he heard the alert over the PA system. He groaned and shook his head.  Luckily for him, the door opened and Jack stuck his head through the doorway.  "Begging the Chaplain's pardon," he said to Francis, then looked at Sean.  "But the lucky groom is needed down in Ops."

Sean turned to look around and saw that Gates was standing right behind Jack, then sighed.  Gates caught on to the sudden dismay, and nudged Jack to enter into the office.  "Go ahead and sign the license, you two," Gates said to Sean and to Sarah.  "Then, like the man said, get down to Ops immediately."  Not wasting any more time, Sean picked up the pen and signed his name, then passed it over to Sarah.  Once she signed the license, both Gates and Jack signed off as witnesses, and the Secretary of Defense practically pushed all three of his subordinates out the door of the Chaplain's office and back into the Chapel.  A red-faced airman was standing at attention, clearly out of breath, and his name tapes on his BDUs read "J. NELSON" and "U.S. AIR FORCE".  The airman wore the rank insignia of an Airman First Class, and the unit patch indicated he was a member of the SGC's security detail.  His eyes widened as he realized that the Secretary of Defense himself was here, as was the Secretary of the Navy; the airman remembered not to salute the Secretary as Gates was the senior-most official in the room.  "Begging the Secretary's pardon," Nelson said, "But there's a guest up on Eleven, sir.  A Mister Nicholas Devore from the Eye-Oh-Ay is here, and..."

Jack waved off Nelson's report.  "At ease, Airman," Jack said to him.  "I know who he is and why he's here, although he's picked a real fine time to show up." He glanced at the newlyweds, and Sean immediately issued his orders, having taken the unspoken prompt.  "Captain Forster," he said to Ruby.  "Report to the Dreadnought immediately.  And for Heaven's sake, be careful out there."  He then looked at George. "Colonel Sanderson, you're with me.  Airman Nelson, carry on."

The airman saluted Sean, which was returned, and the security operative left the Chapel.  Gates turned to Mobius.  "Inform the President that now we're at DEFCON Four, he and his family would be wise to remain here on base.  Then notify the other dignitaries of the same.  After you've made your rounds, come join us in the Control Room."

"Yes, Mister Secretary," Mobius said, and promptly left.  He headed down the hallway and waited for the elevator to arrive.  Once he stepped into the lift, he pressed the button for Level 25.  The doors closed.

<<Mobius to Level 25, Room 277>>

Jack looked at the others.  "I'll go meet with Devore, although his boss is about to get an earful from me.  I've dealt with Keller before.  He wants to throw a hissy fit, he can come here himself, although he'll never get past security as long as we're above DEFCON Five."

"I'll make sure Keller receives the proper authorization to get through security, sir," Sean said, and Jack nodded before heading into the hallway and towards the elevators.  Within a few moments, the elevator arrived and Jack stepped in, pressing the button for the appropriate level.  The doors closed.

<<Jack to Level 11>>

Gates looked at the remaining officers in the room.  "Let's go," he said, leading the way to the elevators.  "Admiral Davidson, Colonel Davidson," he said to Sean and Sarah, "I guess you two will have to celebrate your nuptials later, not to mention have a more proper ceremony.  But otherwise, congratulations."   He pressed the call button, and waved Ruby, George, Sean, and Sarah into the elevator.  Once everyone was inside, Gates pressed the button for Level 28.

Sarah breathed a sigh of relief when both Jack and Mobius stuck their heads in.  It may not have been a proper ceremony, but at least they would be able to sign the marriage license and be legally married.  Sarah took the pen from Sean and quickly signed her name as well before handing it to Jack.

"Thank you, padre," she told Fran.  At least this step was done.  "Oh trust me, Sean will make it up to me," she teased her new husband before following them onto the elevator.  She couldn't help but wonder what they were going to be walking into.  She gave her friend a quick head. "Stay safe, Rubes," she whispered in her friend's ear.  She didn't wan to see Ruby injured again.

Fran nodded with a slight grunt, she hated interruptions and this was no different and under the circumstances she blushed visibly. "Right, no time to waste, I now by authority vested in me, pronounce you man and wife. Get out here you two...go on, its official enough." She smiled at them and noticed young Forster. "What are you waiting for lass? Go on go!"

Ruby wasted no time, she kissed both her friends quickly on the cheek and hugged them, wordless, she was often like that but they would know how much she loved them both. a sister she never had and an older brother who could be, like all brothers, a lovable pain in the arse.

Anne walked fast, very fast. By the time she reached the long hallway leading to the chapel she was running. Though she was neither devout as a Christian, or even a practicing Catholic (she had been raised as an Anglican, yet had seen her life more through Catholicism) once she was withing Fran's domain, Anne did a small curtsey and crossed herself. "Forgive me dear Lord, for I am about to sin." She mumbled under her breath. Not seeing any sign of the padre, Anne went to the altar and called, keeping her voice low, but at a volume Fran would hear. "Francis McCarthy, you about?"

Francis was, indeed about, though she had been in the adjoining office of the chapel. The Chaplain had been hearing bits of chatter from her desk radio, but had yet to go investigate anything.
Obviously, the current goings on was a general interest for her to check into, but she had not had that chance just yet, having finished up some paperwork during her day. Stepping from the office, she gave Anne a smile. "Yes, I'm here," she said in a friendly tone for the older woman. "What can I help you with today?"

Anne put her arm around her old friend, that could only be seen as a dangerous sign, not something you would see the old girl do too often unless she wanted something. "Two things Fran. This may come as a shock, but my daughter Cate is alive and well. She's with the Admiral now." Now came the good part. "We have an IOA stooge poking his nose into our affairs, the whole SGC operation. That doesn't bother me in the least, its his possible interference into the medical division I'm concerned about. Any chance you can call in some favours from you CIA contacts?" It was more than possible Fran could do some digging herself. If anyone could find a little dirt on the IOA it would be her.

As Anne placed her arm around her shoulders, Francis' wheels began to turn. Just what was the older woman wanting to ask her about? The news of Cate drew a sincere smile from the Chaplain and Fran. "That's great news that Cate's alive and even better that she's well. I hope you're feeling well relieved by that?" she inquired in her reverent tone. Her eyebrows raised inquisitively at the request and she gave the Commodore a mischievous smile before her next words. "I may be able to do one better for you. We can't have our medical team getting the short end of the stick, now can we?" she said with a smile. She could do some digging on her own accord and even get some favors paid up in helping out the SGC.

"If you want me to be honest with you Fran, I'm not entirely sure. How do you go back? How do you stop mourning, when the person you were sure was up there with the good Lord has suddenly reappeared. Its a little akin to a resurrection isn't it?" There, she had finally gotten that off her chest. Moving on. "I'm sure someone in the IOA is either fiddling the books, or up to no good, that organisation is to open to corruption. See what you can find out."

"The good Lord works in many mysterious ways, my friend. He has blessed you in many more ways than you know just yet," Francis said with a calm smile as she pondered Anne's words. The IOA had always drawn a suspicious mark in her mind and it was of no coincidence that she felt like they were up to no good digging into the affairs of the SGC. "I'd say there's more going on than they let on for us to figure out. I promise you I shall do my best digging for you and for all of us here," she promised, already thinking of what favors she could call on to get things done for her friend.

Anne shook those weird thoughts from her mind, concentrating on the matter at hand. "We have someone who can help us you know. I'm sure you are aware that Cate was with the CIA for a time, if she remembers that is, at this point I'm not sure how she will fare in that department, nor how long she will be inactive. It might give her something to do. Why not the both of us go see her, it could be enlightening for us." That was something Anne needed to do, give her daughter a focus.

Soft footfalls padded down the carpeted hallways leading to the chapel. It was the only place within the entire SGC, where the floors were covered in this way, barring individual rooms of course. But no other hallway was, and it was of course for good reason. This area was one meant for peace, quiet and solitude. Cate pulled up short of the double glazed doors leading into the Chaplain's domain, she looked in the glass of one door, hoping to see some kind of reflection of herself, she didn't, the glass of course was coloured stained glass, a mural. Putting her doubts and fears behind her, she pushed the door open gently, only to be met by her mother coming out, with another officer Cate immediately saw as the base Chaplain. She didn't know her of course, it was simply the womans insignia of the cross on her lapels that gave it away.

Her eyes welled up immediately, she crossed the few steps to Anne and embraced her tightly. Her choking voice soft and almost unheard. "Mum....god I missed you."

The older woman was visibly shaken; how do you console yourself the fact your only daughter you thought dead, had come back to the living world. There was no answer, you simply couldn't at all, even despite the fact that the two of them had spoken on the phone less than an hour ago, Anne's mind was still a whirl. She returned the embrace, giving Cate a pat down just to make sure she was not in a dream. After a few brief seconds, she let her daughter go and stepped back.

"You're taller, your hair is darker and I rather like that white embellishment." Anne said, her voice a little hoarse with emotion as she reached out to touch Cate's hair. "Somehow this seems so surreal Cate, I'm still struggling with it." Then she remembered where she was and turned to Francis.

"Cate, this is Francis McCarthy, our new chaplain. You may have met her before I believe in your 'other' duties with that agency." Anne didn't mention ASIS or the CIA by name. "Francis, this is of course my wayward daughter Catherine." At least a little of her laconic humour had returned.

Francis nodded with a smile, having nothing to do for the moment and so turned to follow Anne back to the Medbay. "I'm sure it will help her more than harm her, my dear," the Chaplain said lightly. Seeing the young woman who practically met them at the chapel's doors, Francis gave Cate a friendly smile. She waited patiently for the mother and daughter to get through their greeting, glad that they were both alive. There was nothing better than life right now. Nodding politely, the Chaplain gave Cate a smile. "It's wonderful to meet you, Catherine. How are you faring this day?" she asked. The young woman was either on her way to the Chapel for some quiet reflection or a confidential talk or had been directed this way to find her mother. By whatever means that she was here, it was no coincidence, she was certain of it.

Cate took on an apologetic face, she had just returned, reunited with her mother, and her husband as well and now she had to leave again. She cast her eyes down for a moment, then shook the ill feeling away, then looked up at both of them, speaking generally; there was nothing she could really say privately to her mother right now. "Pleasure to meet you to Francis, although...Mum, I'm sorry, this is terrible, we should be spending a rather long time together. I assume you know already, there is trouble out there and Sean...I mean the Admiral has put me on ops as soon as I have been cleared, which your new Doctor has already done."

She looked hard at Francis, then it dawned on her. "CIA, Langley right?"

"What? Cate you've just come back to us from who knows where!" Anne said in a burst of anger. "Sean has lost his marbles surely? Why you? Sweetheart no, this is absurd." Tears began forming in her eyes, she wasn't the emotional type, and rarely had anyone seen her this way. But to hear this after just being reunited with her daughter was extreme. "He can bloody well send someone else, I'll revoke Carrie's clearance!" With that she began to push past her daughter and head for the passage way, a thunder head hovering over her.

"Anne! Temper dear you'll blow a fuse and don't forget where you are either." Not that Fran was all that shocked, she had used such language from time to time herself, then of course asked for forgiveness. "Langley? Oh, now I remember you Catherine, I couldn't quite place the name at first. You're Sydney Bristow's doppleganger aren't you? I think I was responsible for some of your joint missions, the intel at least. I do hope my actions never got you into too much difficulty."

***************

Cate expected that reaction from her mother, what else would she say. Knowing Anne as she did, she knew she would make a rather nasty show in front of Sean and at this time of the night, he was by now in bed. "Yep that was me and no, I doubt you did." Cate said in reply, then turned to Anne. "Mum, you know better than I do how it works. How often did Dad get taken away when at times he had just arrived home?" There was no need to answer that, Anne would be well aware. "This is a minor mission compared to what I've done before, come on, lighten up I've already done my bit." She wasn't about to say, she had already died once.

With a wry look at Mother and Daughter, Fran held the door open. "Anne, give over my friend. She is her mother's daughter after all. Put yourself in Cate's position."

"Thank you Colonel." Cate said in acknowledgement

"Fran, down here at least. Shall we?" She said, holding her hand out.

"Oh dear lord!" Anne sighed softly. She was outnumbered and outgunned on this one, primarily because she knew Fran was right, and so was Cate. "Very well, I'll keep my trap shut for now, and I do apologise Fran. Forgive me." Not that her friend would be too critical, Anne knew very well that Fran had her own choice of appropriate words at the right occasion. "I'll walk with you Cate and at get a few moments with you. Fran and I were on our way to Med Bay, so we can exchange a few words at least."

Luckily, the SGC chapel was on the same level, just the different wing of the base, but it still took some time for Colonel to find all the correct turns - a chapel was something she visited like once in twenty years, and this one was not an exception. In there, she caught Cate talking with her mother and some other woman. Lena figured by the clothing it was the chaplain. Not willing to interrupt the family reunion Elena leaned against a wall by the glass doors leading to the small place of prayer and waited. After all who was she to Cate? Commanding officer and a friend, but that hardly qualifies for the family in the long run.

"No need to aplogise Anne." Fran told her as they began walking. She just happened to look up and see Lena standing there alone. "Ah, Colonel Ovcharenko, I haven't seen you down this way for quite a while. You're looking I take it?"

Cate saw her best friend, someone who to her was as good as family. "Fran, Lena has a dreaded fear of church, she thinks if she steps inside your doors, she will probably come out married to someone." Cate's weird sense of humour was back as well. She looked back at her mother. "Well mum, now there's 4 of us to chew the fat. But we'll be making a detour as soon as we hit the elevators. I need to get my gear and change, as does Lena."

"Russians do not marry at a church, Cate, you of all people should be aware why I give this place a wide berth... But you're right, a fresh change of clothes would be splendid right now..."

It happened a little too fast for Anne's liking, but then that was exactly how she had come to know Lena, always afraid to show a little emotion, much like her own daughter. Which reminded Anne, that she often looked upon the young Russian women, Cate's best friend for nigh on four or five years now, as her 'other' daughter. "You two watch each others backs." Linde walked to the front and nodded to the altar. It was amazing what an air of peace and sanctity there was here. She was a devout Lutheran and always looked forward to attending Sunday services whenever she was here. She wondered if Chaplain McCarthy knew anything about the history of her family in relation to the Lutheran church. Wettins had commanded Protestant armies during The Thirty Years War, and along with King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden had ensured the survival of the Protestant faith in Germany, smashing the Imperialist armies under Tilly at Breitenfeld in 1631, and halting the last serious attempt to impose the Catholic faith on all of Europe.

She found her favorite place and sat. The pews were comfortable, there was no effort to keep the congregation awake by making them suffer through the service. Linde closed her eyes and began to meditate, reflecting on the events of the past week and where they fitted into the overall tapestry of her life.

Looks like she has you cornered again my friend, said Malachi in his head.  Yes, so I see.  I was never much good at tactical strategy, came Robert's mental response to his erstwhile mental companion.

"So it is," said Robert to his good friend Fran.  He sighed, seeing no way out of Fran's trap and tipped his king, conceding the match.  He chuckled.  "A great game as always.  You were always the better one at tactical strategy," he said to her with a smile.  "Oh.  I have some good news for you.  I've asked the base CO if my friend Lukas and I can be assigned here permanently, since you've told me before that you could use some extra hands down here," said Robert.

"He gives up to easily, and here I thought with Malachi he'd walk all over me." Fran thought to herself, although she had to admit she had him outwitted three moves ago. If only he hadn't sacrificed his Bishop earlier he might have had a chance. She looked up over her glasses at him, squinting a little in the dim light which was certainly not the best thing for her considering she was already having eye trouble. "I certainly could use the help, and I'd be grateful to you Bob. But you know..." She pushed back her chair a little to pour another small tipple of port for each of them. "...we have rather a large flock at the Alpha site that could use some taking care of. Our last Pastor there felt too isolated and requested a return home. For the last three months General Chalmers has been doing the Sunday services and I feel she is just a little too much fire and brimstone, if you know what I mean."

{Rev. Col. Robert F. Sheen}

"I know you think I gave up too easily.  But you got me fair and square.  I didn't want to use Malachi as I thought doing so would be an unfair advantage and I wanted it to be a fair game," said Robert, who had a sense of fair play.

"And I guess we'll see what the base CO has to say.  He may very well decide to send me on over to the Alpha Site and keep Lukas here since in addition to his status as chaplain assistant he's also a licensed massage therapist and could also be of some use in the Infirmary.  And he'll also make a heck of a corpsman. You'll see why when you meet with him," said Robert fondly thinking of the large Hulk-sized Russian man that was about 20 years younger than him who he'd come to regard as a son after taking him in at his home parish's orphanage.

A small chuckle erupted from Fran's throat, she for one would only wish Malachi would have played her. "Maybe next time Bob you can let him try." Being competitive was one of her main attributes or faults, depending on which way you looked at it of course, but then her former occupation with Intelligence tended to mold a person that way.

"I'm sure Carrie could use him in that regard. Oh, you've not met the new CMO yet have you? I keep forgetting you've been away for a while now." Which meant he didn't know about Cate either, Fran knew Bob was a close friend of the MacGregor family, he was quite close to Will, she had read that much on the late Admiral's file. "Nothing surprises me these days Bob and I'm confident you'd love the Alpha site, but I won't sugar coat it either, its not a tropical paradise that's for certain." Now how does she tell him about Catherine? Let Anne MacGregor tell him of course. "Have you seen Anne yet? She's on base as far as I know, either that or home, she has a house right here in Springs."

"We shall see," said the reverend with a smile at his friend.  "And no I haven't met the new CMO yet, nor have I had a chance to speak with Anne.  But Lukas should be pulling into the car park right about now.  Once he gets here we can all meet with them then.  I hope all is well with the MacGregors" he said, thinking sadly of his friend Will.

{Rev. Col. Robert F. Sheen}

((OOC: LMT - licensed massage therapist))

Lukas and the SF stepped off the elevator onto level 21 and walked down the hallway to the chapel.  "Here you are sir, the chapel," said the SF as he returned to his other duties.

"Thank you," said Lukas to the SF.  "Hello Father," he said with a grin as he gave his friend and mentor a friendly manly embrace.  "And I take it you must be the chaplain," he said to them both, holding out a rather large hand for Fran to shake.  He was a little startled as when he saw the name he thought it would be a guy but evidently Francis could be a lady's name too, not that he minded working with a lady.  He flushed a bit as he knew his facial scar was visible and she probably thought him ugly.

"Hello my friend," said Robert as he returned the embrace of a man he thought of as a son.

Fran tapped on the table for a moment, she could quite well start a round of bridge if there was a better chance of competition there since there was little else for her to do on days like this. But since Robert's arrival, that did indeed give her options to make her day a little fuller to a degree. "Well come on then I'll give you the nickel tour, I think there has been some changes since you were last here. We'll go...." She didn't finish when a large man appeared at the door, Fran was taken aback somewhat when she saw him. "..oh, um yes I am. Colonel Francis McCarthy." She told him as she stood extending her right hand. "Bob?" Fran tilted her head towards him, prompting for a formal introduction.

"Ah yes.  This is my friend Lukas Sadorav.  He came to our orphanage many years ago from a very hard life in the Soviet Union.  He's the guy I just told you about who can help out both here in the chapel and with his massage therapy license he could be of some help in the infirmary too to help with various soft tissue inuries," said Robert with a smile.  "Now you know what I meant by him making an excellent corpsman.  He also knows the MacGregors.  Used to give Cate piggyback rides when she was little."

Lukas chuckled and shook Fran's hand.  "That's me," he said, taking Fran's hand into his much larger one with surprising gentleness and shaking it.  "It's a pleasure to meet you.  And Father is right.  I remember the MacGregors.  Cate and I used to have hours of fun together, with me as her faithful steed,"  he said with a chuckle, recalling fond memories of simpler times when his only worries were trying to forget about the USSR and their brutal murder of his parents.

The hand shaking nicely done, Fran took note of the fact that unlike a lot of men built as Lukas was, he didn't overdo it; she was still a woman after all despite her hard edge. "I've not known them all that long but I do know a little of their history. I assume that would have been years ago when he father was attached to the Australian Embassy as Military Liaison officer? I did read she and her twin brother Ben attended school in DC back then, she would have been around ten at the time I recall from her file. Rather a gifted child but a handful then and from what I've heard she's more than a handful now." She paused to collect her thoughts for just a moment. "I believe that was around 89' wasn't it?"

"Yeah," said Robert in agreement, also remembering fonder times with the MacGregors.

Meanwhile Lukas merely flushed a little bit as he thought that her hands were soft yet strong, not to dissimilar from his own.  His hands had also become tough, from both his size and because of his time in Soviet labor camps.  He was single after all and he couldn't help but notice that Fran was a beautiful lady as the 3 of them made their way to the medbay, Lukas bringing up the rear as the strong silent type, a reputation well-earned.  A lady like her must already be spoken for though, thought Lukas to himself.

The day had been one that started out quite normally, by lunchtime it was still 'normal' and now approaching the late afternoon it was still boringly normal. Fran had popped over to the Academy hospital to visit some of the SGC patients there, then into town to by a few things for the Chapel then back again. Had coffee and something to eat briefly in the cafe and now here she sat wondering how to fill in the next couple of hours. That was interrupted by the phone, she saw it was the Gate room before she picked it up. "Walter what can I do for you? More directly what can you do for me, I'm being driven to distraction by having nothing to distract me if you get my drift."

*Radio*

"Ma'am, I have a request from Commodore Whitmore to speak to you. He's over at the Alpha Site right now, on radio. Would you like me to patch it through?"

Well now that was news. Fran wondered what it could be about. "No thanks Walter, I need the exercise, I'll be up in five." She replaced the receiver then left promptly.

Taer entered the room. It was empty with chairs facing a Mural. Before it was a podium. A few days after being recalled temporarily from the Alpha Site, the captain used his leave wisely tending to his motocycle in the garage or working out in the fitness room. Among those two were exploring the SGC and interfacing a few rooms for a few seconds to strike up a conversation. The big man had a lot in his mind on a few things but he couldn't wait to get back to duty soon.

Taking a seat near the front, Taer adjusted his tunic to take out two things. His dog tags with a small cross attached to a ring and the pendant he always wore. This small ancient device was always a mystery to him and had been since activated since he received the implanted Ancient Gene. Bowing his head down for a few moments, he closed his eyes and thought some more about several things.

Taer never was much for religion, but he believed that a certain person was looking out for him. It could be anybody or anything. Being the only one in the room was easy for him as he could drown himself in his own thoughts.

Taer stood and exited the room. Five minutes of waiting around was plenty. Tapping his radio, he decided to call the one who requested his transfer, "Colonel McGregor. I am here if you need me right this moment." He was hoping Ben would have something for him to do. He waited too long.

"Captain Amir, get your butt down to the armory, gear up and meet us in the beaming room. You have exactly 8 minutes. I'll meet you and brief you when I see you."

Taer nodded after responding, "Yes, sir. Right away." After ending the radio, he recalled the timeline he had given him. Eight minutes. That was almost enough, but cutting it a bit close to the last minutes. Fortunately for him, the captain was good at running. He took off brushing past several people that protested as the big man barreled past. The last man was shoved aside at Taer stepped into the elevator and requested the number to take him directly to the armory.

The chapel was quiet at this time of day.  Which was just fine with Ty.  He wasn't really in the mood to deal with many people.  There was so much going on in his head.  How the heck had he managed to let himself lose his temper enough to actually punch a superior? He hung his head.

Ty jerked his head up at the crackle of the radio.   Well looked like his time to mope was open.  He shoved up from the pew.  "On my way, ma'am," he said into his radio.
