Title: Music! Just the best, country and the classics
Post by: Mim on January 10, 2017, 09:10:13 PM
This thread is somewhat different to the other music threads, because unless its country or the pre-80's classics nothing else gets in the bar here if it was after 1982! Rock, pop, country, yeah all that.

Warning! Post anything after that and it WILL be trashed.  <P

This one gets a lot of play on the radio in Canada, on account of Neil Young's involvement

That is classic stuff, I've never heard that one before, though I do know him and his old band. What was the relevance of the song?

I have loved this since I can remember as a kid, I'm sure Mum used to sing it for me  <3

What was the relevance of the song?

It was about the Kent State massacre in 1970, where the Ohio National Guard fired at a crowd of student protesters and ended up killing 4 of them.

I don't really know much country music, so I'll stick to classics. Here's my favourite Beatles song:

More Johnny Cash!

And Krusty's version of it...

While I'm in the genre of old guys with guitars, here's Stompin' Tom Connors:

And now I remember I actually do know a proper country song. I know this one because it was in that old movie, Platoon:

A bit older than '82 but still a good country song.

^ Troy that's the point :D anything older than 82 and Alabama! Yesh! I have that album on CD.

Humon, I think most regular people who are not especially fans of country often don't realise that certain songs come from that genre. Talking to Mum and Dad over the weekend about music in general, they told me that back in the 60's and up until FM in the late 70's there was no such thing as separate stations for styles of music, not here at least (except for classical) Dad said he was at sea once when A boy name Sue knocked Hey Jude off from the #1 spot :D

One topic that I am pursuing in my studies (thinking of doing a BA in music history) is Motown. It was an era on its own.

possibly one of the best groups from that period

It may surprise you all for me to say that I do in fact remember when those songs of Johnny Horton's were being played on the radio. I would have been quite young though as I recall.

The theme from Space Odyssey was very popular for a while in the early seventies, it was essentially Elvis's introduction. That is the only source I remember it from.

Car songs were immensely popular in the mid 60's.

Someone say Beach Boys? :D

When I was around 14 or so, my sisters and I were always at the beach surfing, summer or winter it didn't matter. This became our theme song, even though by our time it was several generations old.

Originally an 80s pop song by a guy named Bruce Cockburn (hehe), this title was made into a countryish cover by the Barenaked Ladies, and got a lot of spins on the radio in my country.

Alex, what is:

The Barenaked Ladies - Lovers in a Dangerous Time (1991 cover)

This one comes at you from the Roaring 20s. I only know about it because Steely Dan covered in in 1974.

Duke Ellington - East St. Louis Toodle-oo (1927)

(It reminds me a bit of the Star Wars cantina music)

Umm... gonna stab this with my Steely knives...

Steely Dan - Do It Again (1972)

...might as well link this one too...

...turn up the Eagles, the neighbours are listening...

History repeats itself (1983)

On the other hand, I also hear that this flooding was entirely preventable; that the Texas state government knew about its vulnerabilities to flooding more than a year in advance of the big storm, and chose to continue building new houses and roads on floodplains, etc.

As long as those houses would only be bought by poor people (ie. blacks and hispanics), who cares, right? Greed trumps all.

My cousin is neither hispanic nor black. For some those areas are all they can afford with her husband on a disability pension and her on some meager carers allowance. It is really the same story the world over.

Favourite night is Saturday night...
Cuz me can watch hockey fight!
Me like hockey!

Toronto at Montreal on a Saturday night? Yes please

So it turns out the 'Hey' song so often played at hockey games was written in 1974, so into this thread it goes.

Here is Rock and Roll Part 2, by Gary Glitter:

In 1974 my then future husband and I were going almost every Saturday night (when he was home in Sydney) to a venue called the Texas Tavern. Before we went upstairs at 8pm for the Country Music show, we'd be downstairs in what they called the 'Snake Pit'. The Tavern was popular for sailors at that time, especially for the US servicemen on R&R in Sydney. Around that time Gary Glitter was immensely popular and whenever Ray and I came down those stairs the barman would play this on the jukebox as soon as he saw us.

 Dusting off the cobwebs.

Sometimes when life gets to me I find so much solace in song. Lately as my health has been on a roller coaster ride I've been spending a lot of time in my tiny little studio singing for hours and hours. It's done more for me than any medication ever could and so I thought I'd share something with you. Yes I know, as my brother says often, 'Mel don't give up your day job'. But who cares how bad you sound when you're happy, right?

This is my tribute to Patsy Cline.
