*0450 hours local time*

-On approach to Volgograd Airport-

While some slept, Brooke couldn't. Well yes she had grabbed a few hours and a little to eat; she just wasn't good combining flying and sleeping in one package, plus she was still slightly time disorientated from the flight to the US out of Australia. She had just spoken to the pilot with him informing her they were 30 minutes out and would be making their approach soon. Now she found herself weaving through the cars and their gear to find James in the rear somewhat  dodgy passenger section. Cross bench seats made for Russian paratroopers back in the 90's.

"Hey." A simple wake up statement. "Sergey said we're about 30 minutes away and we'll be landing soon. I thought this might be the right time for one last pep talk. Oh and he said Alice is giving us our own wings if this first mission comes off. A fully worked over A330 with all the mod cons and a special car bay in the belly, now that has got to be better than this old crate."

This was all familiar territory for James, having spent plenty of his adult life in the back of military transport aircraft - C-130 Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III, C-2 Greyhound and so on. He'd never seen the inside of an Antonov, specifically the An-125, but it wasn't a problem. Besides, the way he figured, if he was uncomfortable, he could sit in his Shelby.

"I already gave the pep talk. The problem is that the PMC doesn't exist. Or rather didn't until like a few months ago. The intel you guys found isn't all that promising." James said with an annoyed sigh, "We still need to figure out a game plan, and ideally, we should do it without heavily involving the Russians. Whoever helped put this together for us is likely to end up dead, possibly a suicide with two gunshots to the back of the head..."

<0450 hrs; on approach to Volgograd Airport>

During the flight, Chris had managed to get some shut eye. Though, it was mostly the fact that he was a light sleeper when it came to missions that had him up and about. The plane that they were traveling in looked like it was falling apart at the seams, but if it got them to the place they wanted to be in, he couldn't argue. Not like he had much else to go on if he were kicked back out onto the streets.

Chris had been laying on one of the benches, his eyes staring up at the ceiling, his leg dangling off the side with a tennis ball in hand as he heard someone else approaching before sitting up. He was just annoyed as Hunter was having heard about the news regarding the PMC that they had tried to look into, nothing of real importance seemed to have flagged up. Most of them were ex-military or those who had flunked out of Spetsnaz training.

"Looks like it could just be a front for some other operation that they're planning on executing. Haphazardly thrown together for this transport job, at least looking as if they have been. If this Mr. X bloke is such a bigwig, I doubt the PMC is all he has up his sleeve." He paused to look at the both of them. "Walking up to the PMC and saying 'how do you do' probably would get us all killed."

Gabby tried sleeping a bit but she never did fall into a deep sleep.  She heard every creak and groan and tried to ignore it.  Should this thing even still be in the air? She had spent most of the flight praying they made it there in one piece.  Once on the ground it was anyone's guess what would happen.

When Gabby heard the voices she pushed off the hard bench she had been laying on and quietly made her way toward the back.  She just kept quiet as she listened.   She wasn't military and she didn't really have anything to add to the conversation yet anyhow.

Trying to find a comfortable place to sleep was elusive, the old Russian bench seats weren't exactly conducive to sweet dreams nor was the constant drone of the aircraft's engines in what was a barely insulated fuselage. When he heard the voices, Tom threw off the barely there blanket rolling easily to his feet. He stretched to iron out the crinkles in his bones and muscles to join the others, hearing James's view of how things stood for them. "Likely they'd want to keep as far away from us and what we will be doing anyway. No, we're on our own from here on in whether we like it or not. Have we any further updates from our Alice as to their disposition? Where exactly they are starting the convoy from, what might be the make up of vehicles, escorts, or even if they are going in one group? Until we have some kind of conformation on that we're not likely to be able to forward plan too much?" Surely this mysterious benefactor of theirs knew that much at least.

Thankfully Brooke had taken the time to upload all of Alice's latest data available onto her laptop, she had that in a bag around her shoulder so it was only a simple matter of sitting down to balance it on her knees. It took all of two seconds to fire up. "This is what we know. These blokes or whoever they are, have been setting up what looks like on the surface a charity organisation to ferry urgent food and medical supplies across the border into Kazakhstan on the pretense of helping out the current six year long drought they have been enduring. To make sure they are looking all squeaky clean, they've been doing genuine runs with the blessing of the UN for the last five weeks. Now comes the big pay off." She scrolled through the information piece by piece. "This map gives us some possible roads and I say that loosely, once we pass through Volzhskiy there are few and for the most part unsealed. If we follow them to Maksima, at least there is a highway north and about 80 kilometers west. We have no idea which road they will take or if they will remain as one convoy. Alice suggests they want to make it harder for us."

"Yeah, they could've taken the short route from Omsk to Kazakhstan, since that's where the missile base is, but evidently our boys put up an APB at that border crossing. So that's why they're way the hell out here." Jason said with an annoyed sigh.

"We take two teams, then. Getting them to stop is the problem - we can catch 'em no problem. The real issue is that part because if we go running them off the road like it's cool, we could be leaving Russia with significantly more rads than we started this trip with. Nukes don't blow up like that, but they can always leak. Or our friends could go decide to light 'em off anyways." Jason continued.

"Our PMC, as the intel Chris and Brooke found, seems to draw its shooters from all the countries who hate us in the Mid East but give them good training. Figure probably a few ex-Iranian Army or even Quds Force shooters mixed in to keep them together. Gear will be stuff that won't attract attention here, so customized AKs for the most part." Jason said. "So. We need a plan to stop these convoys when we catch them. Who has some ideas?"

Not having the military focused background the others came from, Tom weighed everything up from his own perspectives and how he might deal with it purely from a law enforcement point of view if he was dealing with narcs heading towards Baja. "The way I see it is we have only one choice. I imagine our orders are explicit, stop them before they reach the border and at the same time we're to do whatever we do away from the eyes of the locals. We've got hundred kilometer stretch or close to it between Maksima and however you pronounce that place." His well worked finger stubbed at the point showing Put'll'cha. "So that is where we need to strike, much the same if they take the southern route, we do have more distance there so as you said two teams, one north, one south. As for the how? I did one take down six years ago south of Glamis out of the dunes, three trucks loaded with weapons and drug lab equipment headed for Mexicali. The only way we could stop them effectively since we were without air support at the time was to get onto the rear of the trucks while moving and believe me when I say it was nothing but madness at near eighty on dirt. We did have the advantage of the Lenco Bearcat, but still since we upgraded those two cars someone must have had this tactic in mind."

The whole thing was insane, then again so was life. "That leaves the two best to do the athletics, Brooke and Ash. Someone will need to drive Brooke's car so that leaves us to just four vehicles which won't hurt us. Gabby can drive her own, so I am assuming Ash will ride with her." Each point he ticked off in his mind except one thing, the tyres they're all wearing won't do the job for the long haul, a change wasn't out of his mind if and that is a big if, they have any available in the right wheel sizes once they land.

Gabby wrinkled her nose.  "They sure know how to play two faced," she commented.  "That's quite a feat to cover up their real agenda."  She agreed catching them would be the easy part.  Stopping them not so much.  She certainly wasn't much help in the military aspect of things but she could drive.

The young woman tried not to smirk as she pictured the scene of Brooke and Ash on the hoods of the cars.  "I feel like we're mimicking a movie." She grinned.  "But I'll make sure to keep a close eye on whoever is crazy enough to ride with me," she said with a half grin.

For a person in a small five feet seven inch broad shouldered frame, Ash was built like a truck. She didn't need much sleep as during the flight, her free time was spent tinkering with her motorcycle. Working in a few physical workouts and a small break in between, she managed to take a nap before they arrived and woke up when the wheels hit the ground. Ashlyn Wolfe was a light sleeper.

Walking into the room with the group, Ash listened to the discussion about the mission. She sighed, "I'm ready. Whatever happens. Not saying it's going to be easy. It never is, but we're a big group. Going in two teams is a good idea. We cover more ground."

"Taka, you're right up to the point of who gets to do the incredibly stupid and crazy part of jumping on the trucks." James said as he stood up and stretched. "It ain't Brooke. It's me. Brooke doesn't have my level of combat experience, and it's her car. Aces in their places; you don't want someone who isn't in sync with a car behind the wheel for something like this. Besides - you all have a lot to learn on the hardware you brought with you. Nothing good for something like this."

"Alright, we're coming in. We split into two teams. I'm riding with Brooke, Ash is going with Gabby. Taka, you call the shots with Gabby and Ash, you've got the experience and know-how here. Briggs, you're with me and Brooke. They won't be expecting us to come at them like this, but don't let your guards down. We're dealing with pros, they won't hesitate to put two in your chest and one in your head if you let 'em. Mr. X doesn't like loose ends and he buries anyone who gets in his way." James leaned into his Shelby and pulled out his pack, plate carrier and MPX, setting them inside Brooke's car. He already had both of his custom Glocks on him, he was already figuring he'd likely be using his Glock 34 way more on this, but it never hurt to be extra prepared.

The lineup also now made more sense, the Shelby and Corvette were furthest from the cargo bay door, they wouldn't be needed and so they weren't blocking the egress of the rest of the team's vehicles.

The aircraft's smell was getting to her, most of it was old, very old body odor and other things she didn't want to think about. "Most of these crud have more than one game to play Gabby, many of them use legit businesses as a front, which I highly expect that is what our Mr X does when he isn't planning the downfall of civilisation as we know it. We deal with one bridge at a time; like my old man is always telling me, life is a circle, what goes around comes around." She reflected on that and her father, god how she wished he could see her now. "X will get his due in time."

The plan as laid out by both the older men was sound as far as Brooke was concerned. She could do it of course, the whole jumping thing as it wasn't much different to jumping from a RHIB to a SEV on a rolling sea...but she did prefer driving her own car. She blinked, a green light on the rear loading door came on. "No, no, no. We're not bloody parachuting out!" Basically she said that to herself, but all was well as Sergei's voice came over the intercom. "Ve are making our approach now, please sit down people and fasten ze belts." They had cameras in here so he knew exactly what each of them were doing. Brooke complied finding the nearest bench to sit, then fastened the lap belt around her waist. "Its a dangerous life we live I guess is the best way I can sum it up. We give and take. We'll do this, oh and James, absolutely no hanky panky just because I'm driving okay?" She didn't know what he was like, but she found most men tried their hand to take advantage of a girl at the wheel.

Several bumps later the Antonov was taxiing in to its designated position. It rolled to a stop and then the door whined open to reveal the night air of southern Russia. "Game on." She repeated.

Chris folded his arms over his chest, his eyes bouncing between the figures who were up and standing with them. An eclectic mix of folks, each one being here for a reason. When Brooke had fired up the laptop, he had slowly gone over to glance over her shoulder at the map that she was looking at; his own personal want for a big map laid out across the benches were out of the picture.

It seemed that they were slowly forming a plan. Chris nodded as James mentioned riding with him and Brooke. "You the only bloke jumping on the trucks or you need a hand?" He might have been older than most of the crew, but he wasn't willing to rule himself out of the fight just yet. Chris hadn't joined the Royal Marines to have an easy life, nor had he been discharged because he wanted to. It had all been out of his hands, and this gig was the closest he was going to get back to his former self. "Just be prepared; if they're going to shoot you, don't give them the opportunity. Return the favour. They don't care much for your well-being, just remember that."

With that, Chris walked away to make sure his kit was squared away in his boot; patting it as he shut it closed. He was going to have to keep with the pistols for the time being, until they hit ground. The command to take a seat, Chris had strapped himself back onto one of the benches, feeling as the plane dropped in altitude and made its landing.

Not ever been a great passenger when it came to flying all Tom could do was press himself into the back of the seat with the belt tightly pulled into place as he closed his eyes. Helicopters he was fine with, big lumbering aircraft that defied gravity not so. When it was all over he was out of that not so comfortable excuse for a seat in a second flat. "Right then we have a course of action. According to that map and our schedule we have somewhere near ten kilometers to reach the end of the city limits. We should decide here and now who is taking north and south roads. Other than that, yes we are going to be shot at the moment they're onto us, so we'd better make this the fastest operation any of us have ever been on. Are we good with that?"

Gabby blew out a breath.  She knew Brooke was right but she didn't like it.  These guys were evil on more then one level.  She studied the map on Brooke's tablet.  They would have to move fast and she was glad to be driving her own car.

"I've always been a northern girl," she commented.  "Unless there is a reason that the other team should go north," she said.  Hopefully she wasn't stepping on anyone's toes but they would be landing in just a few minutes.

"...what are you, 16? Or just that insecure? Wow." James said to Brooke's comment as he pulled open his pack and pulled out the Hardbook, booting it up as the plane touched down and began taxiing to the cargo terminal. He then keyed up the earpiece radio. "Chris, buddy, you ain't the only one who saw combat. This is not my first rodeo by any stretch. Gabby, fine, you can go north."

The personnel at the cargo terminal were all paid off to not ask questions or even look inside the arriving aircraft. A small group of airport security personnel, armed with AKS-74s, were also handy to keep away prying eyes. They also did not stop the cars as they drove out, instead just directing them to the back service gate where another trio of guards who were currently on their side waved them through.

James busied himself with pulling up realtime overhead feeds, pirated off of a couple CIA spy satellites overhead for a while. All of the cars had tracking devices, this would make life very easy to track progress, but it was going to be a little work on their part to locating the target vehicles.

With her hand on the overhead railing, Ash held on as the plane touched down. The rear loading door started to open at one point before as Brooke muttered something about parachuting out of the plane. Personally, Ash would have liked to but at this point, she sided with her. They're not parachuting out at this point.

The opened as Ash released the railing to walk forward to take in the Russian air. It was almost familiar, but it had been awhile. Still far from home, the daughter of de Jaager realized there were far more important objectives to do here. Turning her head slightly behind her, she turned to the group. They were still unfamiliar with each other, which made Brooke's comment to James understandable. With a sigh, she shook her head and responded to counteract James' comment, "Okay. Settle down. We're all unfamiliar with each other. Let's remember that. This mission.".

Looking down, she took out the Beretta from her holster and checked her side arm over. Making sure the safety was on, she removed the magazine checking to see if it was full. Putting it back in, she placed it into her holster and continued, "From what I hear. It's important, so let's just focus on our objectives. Trust that we have each other's back. I don't know about you, but I'm about to make them think twice about crossing my path,"

Looking at Gabby, she nodded, "Like he said. We'll take the north. And anyone who crosses us will pay."

"I'll give you a lesson in Aussie humor some other day." One of many apparently for Brooke, don't put your mouth into gear while your brain is in neutral; a very wise old adage her old man so often quoted. Quite soon after they sorted out who was going where so it was Gabby and Ash with Tom as back up going North with James and herself heading south with Chris as their guardian angel. Once out of the AN-25 and into the streets their immediate destination was a an old trucking garage on the edge of Volzhskiy that had been set aside for their use while they were here. A last minute check of weapons and vehicles with a tyre change for all four cars, going to a all terrain type or at least one that was suitable for the cars without hindering their performance in any great way.

Just outside Volzhskiy soon after they left the garage the two teams made their split, one last radio check and a final satellite check and they were on their way. According to Alice the convoy was traveling at around 60 kmh, or roughly 40 mph. They would have to slow down once they hit dirt but for now both groups had the luxury of around maybe 80 kilometers or so of bitumen to cover and they had a twenty minute head start on them. "We'll see you hopefully at way before the border guys and good luck." Basically that meant whoever managed to finish their mission first had the pleasure of traveling either north or south in between the two main roads, a real cross country challenge.

The harnesses were set, strapped across the bonnet (hood) with a clip, all the rider had to do once he was standing or at least in a kneeling position was to unfasten the clip and use the two ends of the harness to steady themselves. They had practiced it at almost 100 mph so they knew it was safe and would work. "I can't see them yet. How far have we come?" Brooke was not quite yelling but almost as the combined noise from the tyres and engine made normal speaking difficult. Chris would have heard her as well over the radio, so he hopefully was checking the satnav as they tore along the road. Ahead there appeared to be a dust cloud, that was most likely the end of the sealed road.

In response to James' comment, Chris had shrugged in mild indifference, a ghost of a smirk on his face as it was the closest he would come to apologising. Though it was soon that they were revving their engines and driving out of the back of the cargo plane, to Chris' relief that they hadn't blown up mid-flight. He had been taught the art of remaining in a small group of cars, not too close and not so far apart that they were burning fuel to catch back up. Chris was quick to pick up on the fact that he was playing overwatch to the duo of Brooke and James.

He had his pistol on him, concealed by his leg against the door and the other in the glove compartment should he find himself in dire need of duel-wielding or, worse case scenario, out of ammo on his primary pistol. There was also the art of multitasking with the satnav and driving along a road trying to keep eyes on. He pressed a finger to further block out the sounds over the comm as he deciphered what Brooke had asked.

"No eyes on yet. Anyone else, Brooke, Jim, you seeing the dust cloud ahead? Or is my windscreen fogging up?"

Gabby rolled her eyes.   Apparently not everyone had a sense of humor.  She was quite grateful to have Ash instead of James.  James was a good leader but it seemed way too easy to tick off.  Of course she didn't really know him or the others well enough to pass any judgment.   And her father had always told her not to judge.

She grinned at Ash and Tom.  Okay yes the mission was very serious but at the same time getting to drive her car cross country was always a good thing.  "Careful out there, " she said to the other team.  "And see you soon."

Gabby headed her car north.  Now they would need to keep their eyes open.  "Anything?" She asked her team as she looked around.

<Northern Road>

All this for the old red, white and blue, freedom, liberty and all that. Then again Tom could be enjoying a nice retirement on some remote Pacific island if he had wanted to and what? Total, complete boredom after he'd landed one or three Marlin, or wiped himself out on some tropical brew. No even at his age he craved excitement and what they were getting into now was right up his tree it had to be said.

With Gabby's car in front of him, he kept a reasonable distance to enable him to see ahead of them. After the split with the other team he kept his radio quiet to the only absolute necessary messages; he didn't have too much faith in the supposed secure channels they were given. Passing through Maksima was uneventful, a patrolling Russian police vehicle, much to Tom's surprise being a Chevy Silverado, even escorted them to the outskirts of the town and then it was on to Put'll'cha. He was still boggled as to how that was pronounced.

This town saw a marked difference from earlier passings; the people for one showed more of a Islamic influence and it didn't take too much wisdom to notice the unpleasant looks the cars received as they drove sedately through. The local speed signs showing a passive forty kmh limit. As they cleared the last of the ramshackle houses the road ahead became clearer, albeit the hard bitumen and concreted surface soon dwindled to packed sand and stone. "Heads up Gabby, push it out a bit now girl. Nothing on visual but I am checking our satellite feeds and I think our target might be about seven miles or so ahead of us. There appears to be five vehicles traveling at around thirty to thirty five miles an hour heading east."

"Alright people, show time." James said as the vehicles were closing into view. He pulled on his plate carrier over his shirt, and then pulled the MPX out of his pack. This he racked with the AR-style bolt handle, flicked the safety into place and secured over his back before climbing out the window.

The vehicle up ahead was a Kamaz, a common vehicle in the Russian Army so it would not attract much notice. What he wasn't expecting were the GAZ Tigr truck in the middle of the convoy, armed with a Kord 12.7mm HMG. That would be a problem as he grabbed one of the straps. The flap of the rear Kamaz's cargo area flipped open, and a soldier in khaki combat fatigues and a black balaclava stuck out a customized AKM that he was bringing to shoulder.

James wrapped his left hand around the strap for better stability, before using his right to pull up his Glock 34. The AK let out a familiar chatter, bullets zipping past him or flattening harmlessly against Brooke's car. He brought his pistol up in a modified one handed grip version of his usual shooting stance, the pistol was at an angle and closer to him for better recoil control, and then fired several shots. One finally found its mark, and the mercenary's head snapped back as his body fell into the truck.

"Get me closer. Before more come out." James urged. As soon as she did so, James released his grip on the strap, holstered his Glock, and jumped up onto the back, rolling over the tailgate and into the compartment. A mercenary shouted at him in Farsi as he jammed the custom muzzle brake of his AKM in James' face. James pulled the barrel away, kicked the soldier's left leg, and then pulled the soldier on top of him. He rolled to the side, drew his Glock, and began firing. AKs and pistols, CZ-75 P07s, responded, but the bullets were striking their compatriot or his vest. James's fire was much more accurate, and after one final bullet to put his shield out of his misery, James reloaded and saw he was clear.

Northern Road

They had practiced a lot before the mission, so Ash felt like she was ready to do this. Being strapped to the hood of the car seemed easy till you start climbing out the window and clinging to the car going a hundred miles per hour. With so much wind pressure against you, you'd have to be sturdy enough to fight against it.

Geared up and ready, Ash placed herself near the window of the car. Looking ahead of them as she listened to the radio, she squinted till she saw the fine lines of the objects coming over the horizon. The car seemed to be going fast enough as she spoke, "I'm ready to do this. Just let me know when. Keep her steady, Gabby."

That's one. The moment James landed, Brooke waited for a few seconds to see that he was okay, even if he was getting shot at from her position there was very little she could do. He was okay and that was all that counted right now, so she tapped the brake pedal quickly to bleed off some speed then pulled sharply to the left (her car being RH drive), accelerating hard she sped past that last in line truck while looking at the blackened marks that were left imprinted on the bonnet of the Monaro; close, so damned close: one of her wiper blades was missing.

When she drew near the front of that last vehicle, she wasn't expecting what she saw next. A type of IMV with a frigging gunner on top and what looked like a 12.7mm MG. The Gunner's eyes were elsewhere though, off to his own left as he watched what was going down in Jame's truck possibly waiting for his moment to pick her partner off. Damn that was an irritation! While driving there were very few choices open to her except one; do a very very insane thing, that being holding the wheel with her knees as she reached for the ACR, flicking it over her shoulder first. Grabbing the wheel again as she tried to match speed with the last truck, she flicked the safety off to auto. Holding the wheel again with her knees she sped up a little to just barely in front, her heart beating faster and faster as the last thing she needed now was for the driver of that truck to see her. Luck held out as she drew the weapon up and out of the window, sweat now pouring off her as this was not going to be aiming with precision, there was no way she could sight her target. Squeezing off a quick burst she hit the armor shield protecting the gunner. That drew his attention to her as he swung in her direction; Brooke's heart almost stopped as her eyes met his. She fired again, her rounds hitting him in the neck; he fell forward as she dropped the weapon onto the passenger seat, grabbed the wheel again to speed forward to the front of the five truck convoy. "James you're clear. IMV gunner scratched, I'm heading for the lead truck." She told him over the radio then answered Chris. "We've got em Chris. James has mounted the last in line, I'm moving up. Pull in to cover him from his rear. Steeler out."

Chris went about unholstering his Glock 17 when the vehicles came into view, lowering the window as he saw the rear flip open on the Russian vehicle and a figure with an AK popping their head out the side. He had fired off a couple shots, but it seemed James had managed it on his own. It was the driving that he needed to focus on, as he glanced at his dash before they went back to the vehicle that they were following.

"Roge, moving into position now." Chris replied, drifting over so that he was more capable of covering James from the rear. He placed his pistol in the side pocket of his car. "How's it looking in there, James?"

Gabby kept her car headed straight.  The territory was certainly boring to look at, but it also made it easier to catch sight of their target.  She tried not to draw attention to themselves though as they passed through a couple tiny towns.

"Got it, Tom.  Nice and steady. " A grin crossed her face as she pressed her boot to the floor.  The car rumbled under her.  Now this was going to be good.  She kept the car straight and steady though.   "Almost there. "

Gabby soon saw the cars Tom had mentioned.  They were moving fast.  There was no doubt there.  "Just about there, Ash.  Get ready. And be careful."

Expect the unexpected, that was Tom's motto for life and the enemy they faced decided to deliver that right there and then when he checked his laptop screen and the satellite feed. Three small blips coming at them fast due north about a kilometer away. Too small for cars, Tom felt he had to check it out. His problem was, even with the off road tyres and the slight spring lift to his car, was the Nissan capable of handling the dirt? He was wishing he had of opted for the big Chrysler right now, so he was about to find out the hard way.

"Gabby, Ash, go for it. I have three contacts due north and I need to check it out. I'll be as quick as I can." Dropping back a gear he swung off the hardened dirt road to his left with the car bouncing to an almost airborne state the moment his wheels hit a slight rise in the undulating surface. The first two hundred meters or so were similar to the road itself but then it changed rapidly to a very rough typical red desert flat, rock strewn ground. He could hear and feel the change with the sound of something like a machine gun going off beneath the car as stones pelted the belly of the Nissan, a large dust cloud swirled up behind him. If he wasn't a feature on the landscape before he certainly was now.

Spotting his 'blips' a minute or so later he could see exactly what they were, large dirt bikes of the type used in the Dakar Rallies. From where he was they appeared to be possibly Suzuki 650 XT's, all three had pillion passengers and all passengers were holding what he felt were Uzi's. That was going to be a disaster for them all if he didn't do something about it.
