Title: PG8-K59 Alpha Site- Landing area
Post by: Mim on September 12, 2013, 01:00:23 AM
Since the war with the Hozgura, the defences of the alpha site had been upgraded to a degree a dedicated battle carrier landing site was cleared from within one of the older mining areas. This was as close as reasonable to the head quarters bunker as practical, but for Commander Jordan O'Neil, the bases newly appointed XO it wasn't good enough. She felt it was too exposed to the Borg's frontline and with good reason. Since the end of that war; with the base a local population cut down to almost a third of its original number, the Borg had taken the advantage; gathered as much left behind technology of the Hozgura and made themselves a serious threat. Their number alone could wash over the base in a matter of hours; but they needed time themselves to come to terms with their new found power.

"Come on you lazy good for nothing layabouts. The ship will be here any time now. I want these bulwarks completed before she gets here." Jordan shouted over the din of the workers and machinery. They have been at it for two weeks, building small gun towers on the low circular ridge line that surrounded the natural bowl that was the landing area. She was panicking slightly, they had already fended off one attack only yesterday.

{Brigadier General Lucille Chalmers}

The walk from the Alpha Site bunker to the landing area was a good twenty minutes. Lucille could well have taken one of the humvees had she chosen to, but decided the walk in the fresh morning air would do her and her temperament good; she'd been feeling a little lethargic lately and the constant skirmishes with the Borg didn't do anything to cool her mood any either. She needed to do something other than have to be looking over her shoulder every few minutes to see if the next noise she heard was the swish of a blade or heavy mace.

Just as she arrived, her radio burst into life not too unexpectedly. "Saggitta this is General Lucille Chalmers,  its about time. What kept you? We thought you would be here days ago." A status report? How on earth does one explain chaos. "You're safe to land for now. Have General Caldwell and his team disembark on the field and I'll fill him in once he is here." That was really all she could say for now, unless of course he wanted a minute by minute report of every fight over the last two weeks or so, or how low their supplies were at this very minute.

To say they didn't have much time to clear the area was an understatement. One moment Jordan saw the 'boss' talking in her radio and the next moment there was a sonic boom way up above. She looked skyward to see far up in the upper atmosphere the dark shape of a ship rapidly descending. "Everyone out!" Jordan yelled at the top of her lungs. "To the bunkers if you don't have time to clear the ridge!"

Her voice echoed around the basin of the hollow and to suit her words, Jordan herself sprinted to the nearest bunker entry, grabbing Lucille by the arm as she went. "Sorry ma'am, no place to stand here." She said quickly. Only seconds later they were inside and the thick steel door slammed behind them. They were just in time, only seconds after they were inside a loud 'thump' told them the ship had landed. Jordan waited for the dust to settle and then hit the 'all clear' horn.

"That was close, too close Jordan. I hope everyone got out of the area safely." Lucy said to her XO, the woman had proved invaluable over the last few months, not only sharp, but quick of both mind and limb; a surprising thing for Lucille, as they weren't all that different in age with her almost fifty and Jordan close behind at forty six. Lucy all too often had something else to do, rather than spend time in the gym and cross training, unlike the SEAL commander. "Come on, we'll go and greet General Caldwell and his crew."

A few minutes later the two of them were standing alone at the base of one huge support strut of the Saggitta, Lucy with her arms behind her back. Her eyes widened visibly as she took in the marvelous sight of the great Ancient ship.

"TACO, any sign of hostile activity?" "Nein, Herr General." "XO, keep her ready to lift." He got up from his chair and crossed to the bridge arms locker and opened it, donning the helmet and body armor kept there. He then reached in and pulled out a pistol belt and strapped it around his waist. "Lieutenant Morrison, form a secure perimeter around the ship. Commander Harkness, begin unloading the cargo as soon as the perimeter is set up." He looked around the bridge. "Captain Aston, you will accompany me." He moved over to his chair and flipped a switch. "Major Durette, Colonel Harrington, meet me by the hatch."

Steven and Captain Aston took the elevator down to the lowest level, where the hatches were located. The Royal Marine and the French paratrooper were waiting for him there. Morrison and his Marines had already egressed and formed a perimeter around the ship. Looking through the open hatch, Steven saw General Chambers and her XO approaching. He stepped through the hatch, noting the flurry of activity as the cargo was being unloaded, and returned Chambers' salute then shook her hand. "Let's go to your command bunker and talk. I think you'll like a lot of what I've brought for you." As they walked he introduced the other officers.

Flynn looked over at Maria after they landed.  Apparently the two of them weren't to go too far.  Oh well.  Hopefully with time she would be able to get off the ship and explore a bit.  "Have you ever been here, Lieutenant Colonel?" she asked Maria.  It looked like quite a place to her.  at least from what she had been able to see so far.

"General Caldwell, lovely to see you again." Lucy said shaking his hand in return. "This is my executive officer Commander Jordan O'Neil and before you ask, yes she is the one and same of that SEALS controversy some years ago." Lucille pipped her radio. "Briggs, this is Chalmers, send two Humvees over to the landing area and have three squads of our security section assist with guarding the Saggitta."

A reply came through with some static. "Yes ma'am, they'll be on their way in two minutes."

She started to lead Steven and his people back up to the surface. "This is only a safe bunker Steven, the main base entry is a twenty to thirty minute walk south and you don't want to do that come sundown." That was the most active time of the Borg lately and they were becoming as regular as clockwork. "I'll be looking forward to some decent steak right now and soap. Real soap." She told him.

As the two of them made their way off the ship and onto terra firma, Maria breathed in deeply; the smell of real air was so invigorating after being aboard a ship supplying manufactured air and here, it was even better, the sweet fragrance of a pine wood wafting across the deep natural basin that made the landing field.

"Not since the war no Flynn. But prior to that, it was a regular stop over for us and the other ships as well. Being so far out on the edge of the galaxy, it requires more power to operate the gate both ways; so supplies are more often transported in by us." It was odd that a lot of the newcomers to the Stargate program hadn't spent their initial training here, but then that was under both Landry and Jack O'Neill. With Sean it was a whole new ball game, sending new recruits out with SG teams to other off world places as their first taste of the alien worlds. "You'll love the locals here and I don't mean the Borg. They are horsemen and women; they spend most of their lives training for war from horseback. They are not primitive by any standard though, quite advanced. They simply prefer tradition and it was several thousand of their mounted horse that saved the day back six months ago." They should stay close to the ship unless Steven called for them, but it wouldn't hurt perhaps to do a little exploring close by.

"Pleased to meet you General. I've heard a lot about you and your old ship the Deadalus." Jordan said in greeting. Getting to the surface first and standing by the open bunker door, she scanned the area, quiet so far. The site of Marines patrolling around the ship lifted her spirits, the Borg are stupid, but not that stupid to launch an attack now. It should be an easy night hopefully.

Steven grinned at Lucy as the group entered the bunker. "I've brought plenty of steaks and lots of soap too. I've also brought a lot of other things I think you'll like." He shook hands with Commander O'Neil. "I hope I have time to introduce you to my XO and my tactical officer. Maria was my XO on Daedalus, and Sieglinde was the assistant tactical officer there, and she got a well preserved promotion when she came to Saggitta. She also happens to be one of the richest women in Europe and heiress to a ducal title." He introduced the other officers with him. "This is Captain Richard Aston, he's my new chief of staff. Now that I'm fleet commander, I need one badly. This is Major Durutte of the French special forces. He's the recon unit CO on Saggitta. Colonel Hamilton here of the Royal Marines is the new commander of all the Marines in the fleet."

"When we got into orbit we deployed some comms satellites in geosync orbit. You'll have no more comms problems, now. Around the clock coverage. We also deployed a bunch of recon sats in low orbit that will give around the clock, all weather coverage of this area. We also brought lots and lots of drones of all different sizes. We even have some the size of insects that can park on a tree and observe all kinds of interesting things. We also brought all kinds of things to help with perimeter defense, like 81mm M252 mortars and M240 medium machine guns, with lots and lots of ammo. You're going to have first priority on reinforcements and equipment, if I have anything to say about it, and I think I will."

As much as Flynn had enjoyed being on the Saggitta, it was nice to be on firm ground again.  She took a deep breath as they stepped off and smiled.  The smell of pines reminded her so much of home that it almost made her homesick.  Although this place looked beautiful to her.

"Really?" she asked in surprise.  "I hadn't realized."  She wondered why they had stopped coming to the Alpha site that.  If they used to use it all the time it didn't make sense to just suddenly stop.  Of course she wasn't in charge, so she wasn't going to question it.  She was getting a chance to see it now.  Her eyes lit up as Maria talked about the people that lived here.  "Ooh, then I should feel right at home.  Oh, it will be great to get to be around people who love and respect horses again," she said brightly.  Yes, she had managed to get Fred on a horse, but she knew he hadn't really liked it.  And she hadn't had much time to spend with Guy.  "Do you think there will be any problems here?" she asked, noticing that Mesa was still up in the air with her craft.

The dust cloud from the approaching vehicles could be seen clearly in the southern skyline as sun started its downward journey in the west; it was a scarlet red horizon and that most often meant the Borg would try something. Even setting fire to one of the guard towers and nothing else; had been a regular event. So there was a few minutes to wait, so Lucille took the opportunity to bring Steven up to speed. "We've been without decent satellite coverage since the war Steven, as you might be aware we lost not only two thirds of our people, including the locals, the attacks of the Hozgura took out our defence network and communications first. Odyssey provided us with one, but for a base this size and our outposts its just not enough. Your arrival is though late, timely." She told him rather bluntly.

Walking a little more into the open, Lucille watched the Marine force of the ship go about their business. She hoped they wouldn't be needed but that hope faded everyday. "My local commander Josile Senatel should be here by the time we get to the command centre, a good lass and she can pass onto you any requests for back home her people need. Another thing you should be aware of, apart from imminent attacks by the Borg, is that we're experiencing a drought as you can see from the land. Water restrictions are in place so I'd appreciate it if you could pass that onto your people Steven." By that time, the two large Humvees had arrived, pulling up with a squeal of brakes. Lucille walked over to the first vehicle. "One more thing, I put in a request for replacements of our missile defence, was that taken note of?"

"It was. Your missile defenses will be replenished, along with a lot of spare parts for everything." He looked around as he got into the Humvee. "I'll make sure you get earth-moving equipment so you can build proper defenses. I've got concertina wire and claymores with me as part of the shipment." He turned to his chief of staff. "Richard, make a note that we need to get a mechanized battalion out here right away, and ratchet it up to a reinforced brigade task force as soon as we can. I want at least one armor battalion and a battalion of self-propelled artillery, as well as an attack helicopter company. Make plans to put together a multinational force of division strength. We need to be able to take the offensive and stop these attacks for good." He nodded at Lucy. "I'll also order some seismic equipment so you can search for water and drill for wells. If we're going to hold this place then we need to put enough personnel to hold it."

Jordan kept silent as both Steven and Lucille talked. She normally had a lot to say, but for the moment she listened, there was still a lot about the Stargate program she needed to learn and listening was the best way she knew how. When the Humvees arrived, she climbed into the second one, some of Steven's people joined her; still she didn't say anything, her nerves to were a little on edge.

Walking up the sides of the ravine, Maria kept one eye on Flynn and another on the ship and the people below. It was a little hard going and the sides of the slope were slippery with flint and rubble from the excavations, but soon they were on the top of the edge. "One would hope not." She answered her friend to the question of trouble. "At least not while we're still on the ground anyway." By that she meant the ship. She turned westtward and took in the late evening view. "Oh my god, look at that Flynn." Maria pointed to the horizon, there as the sun was going down, was the sea, not but a few short miles away, red with the sunset and a flock of huge birds wheeling away from something far below. "I wonder what spooked them?" They were obviously flying away from something, heading out to sea.

Mesa guided the little craft through the air, looking out the side window.  "All still good, Bella?" she called back.  She hadn't seen any trouble, but she was relying on Bella to be her eyes as well.

Flynn took careful steps as she followed Maria.  They certainly didn't want to fall and injure themselves.  Not on her first mission anyhow.  And the place was gorgeous.  She had never seen anything like it.  "I know what you mean," Flynn agreed.  She turned to look at the horizon that her friend had pointed out.  "Hmm, I don't know, but it usually take a lot to spook birds that badly," she commented.

Maria looked around, there were plenty of armed personnel nearby, she didn't think it would be out of the ordinary for the three of them to do a little scouting. They could keep withing site of the ship at least; the top of the ship would be visible for miles and there were lookouts stationed on the bridge. Surely that was enough; maybe some weapons for the three of them, as they each only had their side arms. "Flynn, lets head back to the ship, grab some decent protection and back packs and we'll do a little poking around. I'll radio Caldwell when we're there. I think this warrants some investigation don't you?"

Flynn continued to watch the birds.  Something was definitely going on over there.  She just hoped it wasn't anything bad.  She nodded at Maria's suggestion.  "I'm in.  Something is definitely going on there."  She turned to follow Maria back.  She wasn't too worried.  Yes, she hadn't ever been in the military, but she knew how to handle a gun.

Linde was on the bridge, supervising the unloading and keeping watch. She noticed the unusual bird activity over towards the seacoast and directed some drones over in that direction. She touched her throat mike. "Wettin to Aguayo and Caldwell. Noticing some unusual activity in the direction of the coast. I'm sending some drones in that direction."

The radio seemed awfully loud, perhaps it was the proximity to the ship. Maria adjusted the volume and she and Flynn headed back that way. "Linde, its Maria, I'm on my way back. Flynn and I are going to do a recon. Having the drones up is a good idea, make sure the infra-red cameras are working....come on Flynn, we best hurry, that sun looks like it is setting fast. I'd say about another ninety minutes or so of usable daylight."

She raced ahead, not entirely sure she was doing the right thing, but that was of little consequence now. Protection of the ship was paramount and if there was some danger out there, it was her duty to be on top of it. They reached the bridge in good time, the elevators were fast, much like the ones on Atlantis, they were more transporters than simple elevators. When the two of them arrived, Maria's face went red. "Craig!" She exclaimed. Dodging past Linde, she went straight back to her monitor; there only static. She tried to raise him again and again with the same result and in the end she sat there, tears running down her face.

Flynn nodded and followed Maria back to the ship.  "Certainly don't want to get caught in the dark," she agreed.  Not knowing the territory well wouldn't bode well for them being out there in the dark.  Not to mention they really didn't know what they were getting into.

Flynn followed Maria onto the ship.  She went to grab her own kit and backpack, not having realized that Maria had left someone on the radio.  She turned when she heard Maria calling for Craig.  "Maria?" she asked, touching the other woman's shoulder.  "We should go if we're going to check it out.  But I can go alone if you have more pressing matters."

"Drones launched," Linde said. "Should be over the area in about two minutes." She looked over at Maria, standing there looking forlornly at the monitor, tears running down her face. She went over and put her arm around the other woman's shoulders. "Liebchen, be grateful that you have a man who loves you for what you are. With most men I'm just a walking bag of euros, a way to a life of laziness sitting on their rears and drinking wine and eating caviar at my expense," she said somewhat bitterly. "There are times when being rich and titled is a curse, because you never know if someone likes you for yourself or just for your money." She keyed her Mike. "Wettin to Morrison. How are those mortars coming?" The reply came quickly. "Just about all set up. Ready to fire some ranging shots. What's up?" "Sending the drones to check out something unusual in the area," she answered. "Wettin to Caldwell. Sending drones to check something in the area. ETA on the drones is about two minutes."

Wiping her face with her sleeve, Maria was grateful for the comfort of her friends, that was something they all did on this crew, support one another, especially the women. They were a close bunch, each and every one of them and rank held no boundaries there. "Linde my dear friend, if any man treated you like that, I would personally shoot them." Maria stood under the taller woman's arm and gently extracted herself.

"I'm fine, just worried. As soon as we can, we need to send a message to the SGC that Craig may be in trouble. I know him and he wouldn't worry me if he could help it. Something is going down in the Pentagon and I can feel it." She moved closer to Flynn. "We have a small window. If something is out there I want to know about it. Linde, call Steven and tell him that Flynn and I are headed down to the beach. If we need those mortars I can line of sight for you. Lets those weapons Flynn....full tactical"

Flynn smiled at her friend.  Hopefully later Maria would get a chance to contact her friend again.  Also, Flynn would have fun asking Maria all about Craig.  She was pretty sure that Craig was more then just a friend, but now wasn't the time to ask.  "Got it," she said, finishing gearing up.  "Let's head out then."  She just had no idea what was waiting for them.

Linde nodded.  After they had gotten on the elevator, she keyed her mike. "Wettin to Morrison. Mortars ready?" "Aye, aye, ma'am. Just getting the radar calibrated now." "Send a team to meet the XO and Dr Flynn at the hatch and have them stick to them like glue." "Aye, aye, ma'am." "Wettin to Caldwell and Chambers. The XO and Dr Flynn, accompanied by Marines, are going to investigate a disturbance between here and the coast. Mortars are emplaced and ready for a fire mission if needed. Recon drones on the way, should arrive any second now." That done, turned to the comms officer. "Genevieve, send this message to SGC Security, flash override. This is Saggitta. Relay to SGC Security, priority Flash Override. Request someone check the status of Colonel Craig Donovan at the Pentagon immediately. He was in communication with Saggitta when his line went dead and communications could not be restored." Hopefully the answer would be something mundane like the phone malfunctioning.

Bella sat in a small ship that soared into the air.
,,Yes, Major, accepted all still is good, it is charming, do not you think?.'' Said Bella Mese with a smile from her question and she ask a new question back. That was all Bella could see, for her, it was charming, loved his job so much. Bella hoped that this will fly several times and more.

Sieglinde was studying viewscreens showing the drones' readouts and was not liking at all what she was seeing. "Scheiss. Wettin to Aguayo and Caldwell. We cannot get a solid reading from the drones. The foliage is too heavy and too damp. It's masking everything, including the IR."

"Copy that sir," Mesa answered.  She turned her sleek little craft back toward the Saggitta.  Something wasn't sounding right.  Especially if there was a disturbance.  She easily landed the ship back inside the Saggitta and jumped out, running to get everyone prepared for air to ground combat.  Oh, this was bad.  Very bad.  She kept her head though as she didn't want everyone worrying and making mistakes.  "With me, Bella.  We gotta get the others ready."

Mesa agreed with Bella, but Bella was equally certain that it's more than amazing.
,,Well, maybe next time something better comes and exciting, but so far there's just so perfect,'' said Bella back Mese, she wanted to suddenly start screaming that it could really enjoy, but she was in the service and not at the party, So he had to restrain..
But Bella was sorry that it will end this.

Bella heard as the ship turned back, when in fact, something happened. There was something wrong, Bella twisted and looked at the boat and tried to figure out what it was. When the ship docked others immediately jumped from the ship, and Bella too. Bella is afraid that it will not be good, but is still hoping whether it's just a little thing.
,,Sure Major,'' now Bella knew she had to be quick, immediately rushed to Major, must be prepared. It's starts, but Bella was not sure what.

Mesa gave the other woman a smile before striding off.  She barked orders every once in a while as she passed ones on her team, wanting to make sure they were ready to go.  No one really seemed to know what they were in for, but they wanted to be prepared for whatever came their way.

Mesa looked up in alarm.  "On it now sir!" she answered, spinning on her heel and racing back to her craft.  She climbed up inside and waited for Bella to join her, ordering the others out ahead of her.  Something serious was  going on.  She tweaked her controls a bit while she tried to home in on Maria's signal.

Linde hit the General Quarters button on the command chair. "General Quarters. Activate the Close In Weapons System. Launch armed drones" She hoped that they would get there in time. All around the outer hull of the Saggitta, gunports opened and the snouts of deadly rapid-fire machine guns and missile launchers poked their way out. This was a final line of defense that could be used against missiles in space or as deadly anti-personnel weapons on the ground. The stream of fire from the machine guns could rip an attacking force apart in seconds.

A dark grey Humvee, with a ringed topped .50 MG mounting on top, came bouncing and bounding down the incline from the direction of the base. At the wheel was Jordan O'Neil. She pulled up at the loading ramp of the Saggitta and jumper out, she had a loud hailer in her hands of all things.

"Attention Saggitta crew, one of your recon teams has been compromised, I need four volunteers!" That was all she needed to say.

Mesa heard Jordan's call before she had left.  "Bella take the controls.  I'm gonna help the Commander from the ground."  She jumped out of the plane and headed over to where Jordan was.  "I'll come," she said.  "Do we know the others status?"  She was worried for her friends.  Although she didn't know who all was out there still, but they were all team mates.

<<From Command Centre>>

Once outside, taking the same route they had come by, elevators and out the huge steel doors; Lucille wasted no time in commandeering one of the parked Humvees. Where the Saggitta had been landed, was right alongside the aircraft bay of the bases 401 squadron. The 302's they had, were some thousand meters further away within a similar excavated bowl shaped landing area; each of the ten aircraft withing their own revetment. With Steven aboard the Humvee, the base Commander took only a little under five minutes to reach her own personal 401, dark grey, not camouflaged like the rest of the fleet. Adorned across the nose on either side, was a stylised motif, much like those seen on World War two bombers; it was a woman dressed in armor, riding a rocket. Underneath was the words 'Iron Maiden'.

Parking alongside, Lucille noticed that one of Steven's own 401's had returned to his ship, she could also see Jordan near the cargo ramp. Putting those two things out of her mind, she jumped out of the vehicle and went immediately to the side door of her 401, pressing a button under a panel, opened the door and the air stair lowered automatically. "Mine is a recon version Steven, but she still packs a decent punch. The advantage she has over the other birds is her surveillance suite. Her infra red can penetrate much deeper than the conventional ones we have on both drones and satellites and she has passive audio listening as well."

Lucille clambered up into the cockpit, taking her left hand seat at the controls, going through a rapid pre-flight. She had managed to get that down to less than a minute. Engines began the whine and a small dust cloud started to cloud the immediate area. "If your CAG is grounded for whatever reason, we should poach at least one of her crew to fill in as our weapons officer, but I'll leave that option up to you."

Steven swung himself into the co-pilot's seat and started running through his part of the check list. He looked up and saw that one of the fighters was grounded and her crew waiting impatiently to get it going. "Hammer! Get over here. We need someone to fly weapons!" A short brunette grabbed her helmet and dashed over, clambering into the craft in a trice. He listened as she started running through her own checklist. "Ready to lift," he told Lucy.

Mesa's eyes widened briefly.  Flynn was out there?  Oh God, how would she ever explain to Guy if something happened to his baby sister?  She hadn't thought about Steven needing to find another pilot.  Of course that was why she had told Bella to take over her craft although she would probably get a very stern talking to later.  She wouldn't worry about that now.  Not with Flynn out there and Maria as well.  "Got it," she said, moving quickly to grab what she needed.

Both rear loading door and side entry closed with a rather loud hydraulic whine and 'thump' as they were sealed; Lucille calling up the Flight Controller in her CIC. "FC, this is Alpha Charlie zero six lifting off for West Beach area."

There was always a little interference with radio traffic at this time of the year, it was due to sun spot activity, so there were moments when you thought you might have been talking to a frog, such was the sound coming via the coms scramblers.

"Alpha Charlie zero six you are clear. No immediate warnings General, there is a storm coming in due in about four hours from the North West."

Lucille looked at her new crew, her face went pale even with her dark skin. "Copy that. Buckle up tight please, I'm not going to be treating my girl like a baby. We'll be flying across the top of the trees." She pushed the vector knob forward, the thrust from the four downward nozzles easily lifting the twenty plus ton weight. Once she was free of the ground and flying forward and up over the trees, Lucille banked left and headed west at a lazy 150 knots. "Before we go too much further, Steven, I would like to point out we're on the verge of the monsoon. Its a drought breaker if it does happen, that storm may well pass us by. But if it doesn't, nothing moves on the ground for up to six weeks. You will have 100 kilometer winds and up to three inches of rain in an hour."

Well, that looked to be about it, maybe she wasn't loud enough. Jordan shrugged and climbed back into the Humvee. "Mesa, sit shot gun with me, Claudia, you can climb up into the gun ring." She waited a moment for the two of them to join her and as soon as  the other door was closed, she shifted the gear stick and gunned the engine. "Either of you have gum? "I heard that," Linde said. "Recon sats show that it's moving faster than that. You'll have a limited time over the target before it gets really nasty, Alpha Charlie Zero Six." She looked over the shoulders of the techs monitoring the armed drones that were now searching the area. "The drones don't detect anything." She turned to Genevieve. "Anything from the XO and Dr Hart?" "No commander, just silence." Linde would have dearly loved to go hunting for them herself, but her duty was here.

"You'll only have a couple of hours, David. Big storm headed our way. Linde, get the ship battened down." As large as she was Saggitta would ride out the storm easily, but reasonable precautions were not amiss. "Caldwell to Aguayo, come in please. Talk to me, Maria." He turned to Lucy. "Let's lift and get over there."

With one eye on the radar and another on her HUD, Lucille grunted. "Copy you Saggitta, I'll take a swing south and come directly up the coastline, a slight detour." Her message would be heard by the bases flight controller as well, nothing like broad coverage. Without moving her head, she spoke to Steven. "Last year it turned into a tropical hurricane; worst I've ever seen. The locals tell me we'll get three of these in a row and then ten years of relatively normal weather patterns. It has something to do with the movement of the second moon. I've never seen it, but they say it will appear at the end of the month and stay visible for a year. It'll look like a small globe beneath the major moon."

She remembered reports of storms similar to what they were expecting at Atlantis, she was quite sure that the Daedalus had been there at the time; it would appear to be a common element on alien worlds. Those were her thoughts as she pushed the throttle forward, made a smooth banking turn to port and headed due south.

Linde recalled the drones, they couldn't function in this type of weather. Looking out the huge windows of Saggitta's bridge, she could see Major Durutte and SR-1 getting into their vehicles and heading out towards the beach. "Iron Maiden, SR-1 is on the way to help secure the area. I've recalled the drones. They can't spot anything in this weather."

Genevieve pointed to a side console away from the others. Puzzled, Linde went over, then keyed in her code. She gasped as the text scrolled over the screen.

For Commander Wettin. Relay to Generals Caldwell and Chalmers. There was a terrorist attack on the Pentagon. One presumed fatality, Colonel Craig Donovan. Early reports indicate the explosive used was El Aenir in origin.

"Mein Gott. Heilige Maria, Mutter Gottes." My God. Holy Mary, Mother of God. She wasn't normally religious but she needed the comfort of the ancient ritual now.

"Linde, what is it?" she heard from Caldwell. She had forgotten that her mike was open. She keyed it to cut out everybody but the two generals. "Message from the Pentagon, Generals. There was a terrorist attack at the Pentagon. Colonel Donovan is believed dead. The El Aenir are responsible."

{Flight Sergeant Kyle Lincoln RAF} NPC

Kyle was Saggitta's chief aircraft handler, it was his job, just like that on an aircraft carrier, to ensure the safety and movement of both people and aircraft within the Saggitta's great hangar deck. He kept everyone clear and stopped all movement while the young Lieutenat Sheppard parked the CAG's bird. Once she had shut down the engines, he signalled the all clear and people went back to their duties. He ran to the side and opened the door, not going all the way in, just poking his head inside.

"Lieutenant Sheppard ma'am, you're wanted in the Alpha Site command centre asap ma'am." He was always very proper, polite and digified, that came from his few short years of working under Colonel Abe Ellis on the Apollo and he wouldn't have it any other way.

"TACO, find out everyone on the ship who can rise a horse and have them report to me here. That includes you. Turn over command to Lieutenant Larson and get over here. The terrain is too bad for our drones and recon sats, so we'll search for Doctor Hart the old fashioned way."

"Jawohl, Herr General," Linde answered. She flipped a switch on the command chair. "Any one who can ride a horse meet me at the landing ramp. Draw small arms, body armor, backpacks with food and other necessities for several days and sleeping bags from the armory. We're going to find Doctor Hart the old-fashioned way." She rose from the chair and went to the arms locker on the bridge, strapping on her own body armor and weaponry. She would pick up a sleeping bag and a backpack with supplies on the way out.

Jordan went directly from the briefing, to her rooms, then the armory and finally, at a decent run she made good time to the landing site. She didn't take a humvee, it was useless in the amount of sodden ground they now had; as good as they were, the soft deep soil they had around here would sink them up to their wheel arches in good time once they were off the hard roads. Just at that moment she got there, beneath the huge open side door of the Saggitta, she caught the words of the airman to young Sheppard. "Belay that Sergeant, she is coming with us. Lieutenant Sheppard, go get yourself ready, you have 5 minutes, light travel and weapons. I hope you can ride a horse girl." The SEAL officer herself was wearing local clothes. Leathern pants, shirt and black jacket. Her weapons were in a sling, to be carried off the saddle. On her back she carried a pack, not too big, enough for what she needed.

Bella had finished parking the 401in the hangar and the shut down the engines; all the while a little humming through her teeth, one of her favorite songs, and that she had many. But she was careful so that no one not caught. She was about to leave when first one of the mechanics called to her, but before she could reply, Commander O'Neil from the Alpha base had spoken to her directly.

"Sorry Kyle, you're a little late." She said as she climbed down the stairs, facing the tall Naval officer. "Yes ma'am. Just give me three minutes and I'll meet you outside." Then she was off to change and gear up.

Mesa had never packed so quickly in her life.  Once she was sure the others that were coming knew what they needed to do she grabbed her things and jogged down to the landing site.  She wanted to be there as quickly as possible.  She had a small duffel swung over her shoulder along with the weapons Jordan had said to bring.  "Now what, ma'am?" she asked Jordan as she caught sight of the other woman.  Did they just wait now?  She was not going to be good at that at the moment.

"We wait Mesa, but not long I think. How many from your ship are coming with?" Jordan had a vague idea and Josile did say no more than a dozen. The SEAL officer in Jordan tended to agree with her as well; the smaller the party, the less likelyhood they would be detected. She also knew Steven's will, to send a large force as well, that was in hand but that group would go via the North East pass. It would probably be better if those, could be taken by the ship and dropped off at Delgins Wood, just a little to the East of the pass. Thunder could be heard not too far away, but it wasn't the thunder of the heaven's, this was different. "Watch, over there." She pointed to the gap in the bowl of the landing area where there was a small rise in the road leading to the outer settlements. First a dark shadow could be seen, the setting sun casting a long black line; then figures could be seen on horse back, those grew and soon the gap was filled with riders, hundreds of them. "Answer your question?"

Mesa sighed softly.  It hadn't been what she had wanted to hear, but it was what she expected to hear.  "I do believer we have five coming," she answered.  She knew others had wanted to come, but not many could ride and they only needed a small group..  Mesa looked over as Jordan pointed out toward the mountains.  Her eyes widened as she watched the horses approach.  It was a gorgeous scene and she knew both Flynn and Guy would appreciate it.  Right now though, neither were there.  "It does," she said with a small smile.

The thunder reached a crescendo, it was deafening as steel shod hooves cantered over the hard packed road, they were six abreast and many more behind each forward line; it would seem that Josile had meant to make a statement. "Hail Jordan! Well met my friend!" The woman was shouting, and well she should over the noise following close behind her. Josile pulled her black charger up almost at the feet of the others and slid off in one fluid motion.

Almost to a one, every horse was dark, either black, dark brown or bay. There wasn't a light coloured horse to be seen. Each bore a unique saddle, not unlike the western style of the US, only the cantle was higher and no pommel for a rope. There was provision behind the saddle for a pack and a bedroll was already attached. On the right side, was a special holster for a shock lance, an extendable weapon, which worked on a similar principle to a Zat. Three settings, only these you did not fire, you simply brought the tip into contact with your target. A very effective weapon, at full extension it was eight feet long.

"What? How?" Jordan stuttered, she expected Josile to bring only those horses and people for the search party, she never envisioned that the whole damned army would come, not at this point at least.

"We've been preparing for this for sometime my friend, we knew it would happen eventually."Josile replied.

Jordan gathered her wits at that point. "Josile, you know Mesa. The girl is Claudia Monroe, we have three or four others joining us shortly."

"Well met Claudia Monroe." The tall woman said in her well rounded tone. "They had best hurry then, we have very little light left and we need to be on the coast before dark. The bulk of the army will head north by east." She replied.

"They won't be long." Jordan assured her.

Mesa actually found herself smiling as she watched the horses.  She had always thought they were such majestic creatures. And to see so many in one spot was amazing in itself.  If you looked closely you could pick out little features about each one even though their coats were pretty much the same color.  She turned thought when Josile dismounted.  It was easy to see by Jordan's face that this was not expected at all.

"Do you think the Borg will hurt Flynn?" Mesa found herself asking.  She was worried sick about her friend.  She wanted to get going right this instant, but knew it would be foolish.  She didn't know her way around here and would only end up as another casualty.

A firm grip held Claudia's hand, one that had been used to hard work and years of being at the front of the Cavaleiros's battles. Since she was not more than fourteen summers, Josile had been both riding and using her bow to good effect in her peoples contests with the Borg and Goa'uld. Only once in their histories had they been defeated and that was by treachery many generations ago. "It is indeed my pleasure to meet with you as well. These are essentially wild but willing horses, they will do as they are bidden, they work with us and defend our lands as their own, but we do not own them. I ask you all to treat them as you would a brother or sister and they will repay you in kind." She turned her head, looking at the low sun. "Jordan, on whom do we wait?"

"Oh my goodness!" Bella said the moment the horses appeared. She had already gone back to the ship twice now, only this time she came back a little more prepared. When Steven spoke up as she returned, Bella held her small pack and rifle aloft for him to see, hopefully Mesa would as well, she did want to make a good impression after all. Looking around at the animals, there was one individual, a dark chestnut mare that took her eye, she walked towards it and the young woman holding the bridle and reins, sitting upon an equally wonderful looking horse let the reins drop at Bella's feet. She bent to pick them up and as she did so, the horse snorted softly in approval. "Hello there." She said softly and looked at the woman. "Does she have a name?"

"Estreal." The other said simply. "It means sunset in the old tongue."

"It suits perfectly." Bella replied, then walked to the side of the horse, ran her hand around the girth strap and smiled. She was marvelous. "I ride so so, not great but I will keep up." She said placing one boot in a wide unfamiliar stirrup and mounting with ease.

Both Jordan and Josile watched as Bella found her horse, or perhaps it was the other way around. Certainly the young woman gave a lie to her 'so so' remark as Josile could see by her familiarity around the animal, she had more than enough experience. "Thank you General Caldwell, you missed my remark earlier. We do not own these horses, they are free spirits who chose to work with us." As has been for thousands of years. "The horse you chose, for the duration of your company, will bond to you as a friend. I ask all of you to consider that in kind."

There was nothing else to do now. Jordan herself had found the mount she had ridden before on her 'lessons' a fine bay gelding, not to tall or wide across the back; just right for her abilities. In quick time she was mounted and pulled up alongside Josile.

"Twelve of us will ride west and find the trail. The bulk of Josile's people will take the North East road. Hopefully by the time we have found Flynn, a confrontation won't be necessary." She began. "But if we should come against any numbers of Borg, I can only say this once, they are fast and almost as fast as the horses. They will try to jump on the back of your animal, keep that in mind. The lance by your side in most circumstances is your close range friend, you'll be shown how to use it as we travel." Jordan looked at Steven. "Anything to add sir?"

"No. Nothing to add," Steven said. He loosened his pistol in its holster and saw Linde do the same. "I will take care of your companion."

Mesa listened to the final instructions before swinging up into the saddle.  She ran her hand along the horse's muscled neck, feeling right at home.  she had loved horses since she was little and she also knew that Flynn would love this sight.  Hopefully her friend would get a chance to see these magnificent creatures.  She nodded as she listened.  "I'll do my best to help protect you," she whispered to her mount.  The mare seemed to understand as her ears twitched.  "You watch my back and I'll watch yours," she smiled.

With nothing more to be said, Josile lifted herself from her saddle, standing tall and yelled aloud, her voice echoing across the bowl of the landing area. "Cavaleiro! Nós lutamos por nossas terras e nosso povo. Montar!" She wheeled her mount around and led the troop to the hill behind.

Jordan's slim grasp of the local tongue, knew enough to know this was it, no more talking, no more planning. The seed had been sown. With a 'hiyaah' to her horse she almost spun in a complete circle before gaining control, her face going red with embarrassment. "I'm a sloppy rider!" She shrugged, but then she capably took off after Josile.

Steven and Linde nudged their steeds. They needed no further encouragement, just the site of their herdmates spurred them on. Steven felt exhilarated. It's been far too many years since I've had a chance to do this. I should get home a lot more often.

Linde felt a wide smile forming on her face. Her family had insisted that she learn how to ride. Practical riding, not riding for show and competition. There were still places, even in the long-settled lands of Europe, where there was country that had yet to be tamed. More than once her and her siblings had accompanied her father to put down a boar or a bear that had turned to ravaging crops and killing farm animals, or harvest a deer population that had grown too large for the local habitat. Her more effete acquaintances had sneered and called her a barbarian. To Linde, it was just one of the things you had to do. You had a responsibility to the land and you had a responsibility to the people who lived on it.

Mesa gave Jordan a smile as the other woman had to rein her horse around in a circle.  "You're doing fine," she assured the other woman.  Every horse was different, just like every rider was.  She patted her own mount's shoulder and turned her to follow the others.  She wasn't looking forward to a confrontation at all, but she wanted to get Flynn back.  Who knew what her friend was going through at the moment.

<<Lieutenant Genevieve Larson, RCN>> (NPC)

Genevieve swung out of her bunk, dressed quickly and headed for the bridge. Sliding into the command chair, she hit the general quarters alarm. "Prepare to lift ship in ten minutes." Flipping another switch on her chair arm, she activated the outside speakers. "You have ten minutes to clear the area. All of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, back on board now." Flipping another switch. "Larson here. Pilots, man your craft. Crew chiefs, configure for air-to-ground operations. We will launch as soon as we get one thousand meters in altitude. You will receive a full mission briefing then." She brought up a map of the planet and traced a line. "We'll take her here, just out of sight of the Borg camp. Nap-of-the-earth and full stealth." She watched as the clock counted down. "Lift ship."

Lucille didn't expect anyone to greet her when she arrived. She was though taken aback when she found the place so quiet and the Saggitta had left and it was as if it hadn't even been there for the exception of the huge gouges in the earth where it had stood. Kneeling and feeling the ground, she told herself the ship had only departed minutes ago, such was the heat still present. Sighing, Lucille went to the command bunker nearby and began going over her own options in the event things went south with the Borg.

It had been almost an hour since anything had happened. One of her Marines came to report that the Saggitta had broken orbit and that the search for Flynn would be taking a new direction. Lucy was also told that two ships left the planet from somewhere in the Borg region; that little piece of news soured her stomach. She thanked the Sergeant and promptly left for the main base, leaving behind a few red faces with her choice of expletives when she had heard the news.

Flynn was certainly ready to get outside.  And being with one that she considered a very good friend now made it even better.  Her eyes widened as they stepped outside.  "It really is pretty," she whispered, leaning on her crutches.  When she had first been here her and Maria hadn't gotten a chance to really enjoy the scenery.  They had been caught up with that strange sounds which had led to both of them being badly injured.  She would have to see how Maria was.  "Rachel, has anyone heard anything about Maria?"  Yes, there were still things that were very hazy in Flynn's mind, but she remembered everything that had happened to her unfortunately.

Elevators, hallways and a few stairs, Flynn seemed to take it in her stride now after only a few hours, including the day before. Rachel was more than proud of her, somewhat proud of herself as well, for being able to have helped. Now they were standing outside the main entrance, the vistas from here were superb as your eyes took in the mountains that surrounded the valley the base was located in. It was a mix, something like Colorado in some ways if you looked north, and then much like the mountainous areas of the Himalayas south, with the added tropical feel to it. The highest mountain here, was Elberous, some ninety miles south east. At 32,000 feet, you could see its snowy top from here, and the jagged mountain ranges that marched north and south.

Rachel breathed in the clean air, it was always best at morning. "She was sent back to the SGC, just as you were in theatre. And I might add, too early as well, she should have had more recovery time." Rachel sighed. "She was in worse shape than you Flynn....come on, lets go see the stables shall we?"

Flynn took a few minutes to just enjoy the view.  She felt right at home as it reminded her of her own ranch back in Montana.  It was certainly soothing to the soul to see a place like this.  The fresh air had to be good for the body as well.  Even if it had left her a bit winded by going up the stairs and everything else to get here.

Flynn was surprised by that.  "They sent her back?"she asked.  And her friend was more injured then herself?  She couldn't remember what had happened to Maria exactly but she was sure it wasn't good.  "Alright.  Let's go," she agreed, needing to see the horses.

"Beautiful isn't it Flynn." Rachel said, pointing to Elberous sitting on the far horizon like a warning beacon covered in snow and mist. She walked slowly, to allow her companion to take it all in, something Rachel herself needed to do now and then to bring her back to reality. "Our MO is not the most exacting guy, he's out of his depth here and as far as I am concerned too old for the job. Yes he did well in putting you back together, but as far as I am concerned that...hopefully was his last surgery here. I'll be talking with General Chalmers about his replacement soon. Sad, because he is a really nice man." She lamented.

They walked further, passing some locals and Flynn received some admiring glances along the way. Unlike the men of Earth, there were no wolf whistles, no lewd comments. Just appreciative looks and nods. The base stables soon came into view, a tall building some 30 odd feet wide and as much as perhaps 200 feet long. Rachel opened a small door set in the large double front doors and stepped in. The sight to behold, was rows of stalls, stable hands going about their business of course and the smell of hay and horse. A little overpowering at first.

Every single one of them was a trained warhorse. Trained to obey the rider with leg inputs and trained to fight as well. But these animals were extremely intelligent also, being able to understand voice commands, even if they had never heard it before, they were remarkable and the Cavaleiros, regarded them as family. Rachel led Flynn to the third stall on the left, within was a beautiful chestnut mare some 16 hands tall. She eyed the visitors with an uncanny kindness. "This is Rixa, I thought she would be perfect for you.....wait a minute." She paused, looking further down some 2 stalls. "That's Jordan's horse, she must have slipped in overnight."

Flynn took a minute to truly enjoy the scenery.  It was really gorgeous here.  As long as one didn't think about what was in those words.  "It is," she whispered.  "Wish I had my camera."  She took her time walking by Rachel, not wanting to miss anything or chance tripping.  "Oh, I don't really remember much about him," she admitted.  She had been in and out during that time.

The young woman felt her face flushing as she received some appreciative looks from the locals.  She wasn't used to men really paying any attention to her.  Although she loved the outfit she had been given.  Yes, she was a jeans and boots kind of girl, but the outfit she was wearing now was so comfortable.  Her eyes widened though when they reached the barn, a smile touching her lips.  She had missed this.

Flynn stayed with Rachel as they walked down the aisle way.  The horses were gorgeous and it made her think of home.  A smile lit her face when they stopped in front of one particular stall.  "Rixa?  Well, it is a pleasure to meet you, Rixa," she crooned, holding a hand toward the mare to let her sniff.  She glanced over at Rachel.  "Jordan?  I recognize the name."

"Like I said Flynn, nice guy but a bit passed it." Rachel chuckled, allowing Flynn to take it all in. She herself loved being here and Rixa, the mare responded to Flynn's greeting with a blowing of the nostrils and a gentle shaking of the head. You could see the kindness in her eyes, but there was a fire to them as well; she would take you into battle and protect you, even if it meant her own death. "Commander Jordan O'Neil, the base XO, she was on the same mission as you." Rachel reminded her friend. "Dark hair, tall and a little on the butch side." She laughed.

Flynn sort of remembered the doctor.  a lot of that time was still very fuzzy to her.  Which was probably a good thing considering what they had had to do.  She giggled softly though as Rixa blew warm air over her hand.  She sure missed her horses.  It was nice to be back among them though.  A thought seemed to niggle in the back of her mind.  Something about a nice ride with someone who she couldn't quite put a face with at the moment.  Or why she was with him.  It was a him.  She knew that for sure.  She sighed softly, not liking that she couldn't remember.  Flynn turned her attention back to Rachel though.  "Oh, I remember her," she answered, managing to remember who Jordan was now.

"She's the kind of woman who would save your butt any day Flynn, then slap you across the face for being stupid and getting into the situation in the first place." Rachel continued. "Not hard to miss. Now, I think its way to soon for you to ride, but.....here's the kicker. Flynn had to laugh at that.  'Then I'm sure she wouldn't be happy with what Maria and I got ourselves into," she said, an actual smile on her face.  It was always good to know someone had your back though.  Flynn sighed softly, knowing Rachel was right.  With her leg she wouldn't be able to sit a horse yet.  Her eyes lit up though at the next words.  "Ooh, that sounds like fun," she exclaimed.  She had never been in a sulky before.

A very deep hearty laugh burst from Rachel's throat, principally because she knew only too well of Jordan's rather 'unique' personality when it comes to being stupid. She had to pull Rachel out of the lake last summer, the former not being the best of swimmers. After dressing her down and yes, giving her a slap; the woman hugged her later on. Go figure.

"Come on, then this way Flynn, you're going to love this." She led her down the stalls, past the beautiful and at times rather fearful warhorses, each of them eying the women carefully as if they were weighing up their courage. Finally they came to within the end of the stable, a long walk indeed. There parked within its own little stall was there ride. "Well? What do you think?"

Flynn smiled when Rachel laughed.  She would have to meet Jordan sometime.  Especially if she had been in the same group as herself.  Maybe she would be able to tell Flynn more of what had happened.  Everything was starting to blur together.  Not to mention she didn't know what happened with the others after Ziggesh captured her.  Flynn quickly pushed that thought to the side though, not wanting to think about her capture.

Instead, she turned her attention to following Rachel.  She wanted to gawk at all the horses, but the crutches wouldn't allow her to.  If she let down her guard or lost her concentration she would be on her butt pretty quickly.  She was still getting the hang of the crutches after all.  Flynn's eyes widened when they reached the end.  "ooh, it's so pretty!" she exclaimed.  "I've never rode in one before."

Two fingers went to Rachel's lips and she let out the most surprising and quite loud whistle. "Yo Flamer, you around?" She called just as loudly. "Old man, almost deaf but such a sweety." She said to Flynn. "Pull up a hay bale and sit, this will take about 20 minutes." She added.

"Ah'm here me girl." An old gravely voice replied from behind them. Flamer Dann had been mucking out one of the stalls right near them and they missed him. Short, bent, snow white hair and he was possibly around 80, but tough as old boots. "Ello' there miss, ya'all must be the one we heard give some stick to the Borg." He asked Flynn. "Yer pretty much the ero' round this parts ya know." He turned back to Rachel. "Taking her to town missy?"

"That's the idea Flamer. Flynn this is Flamer Dann, our horsemaster. Flamer, this Flynn." She winked at Flynn, taking note of the old man's words.

He tugged his forelock. "A pleasure Flynn, nice name to, ya have." He stepped back, looking over the sulky. "I'll have it set up fer ya in no time. Besdada should be fresh." He pointed to a sweet looking bay stallion nearby. (The Cavaleiros do not geld horses), the horse in turn whinnied at them.

***************

Just as he told them, in less than 20 minutes it was done. Besada stood there obediently, waiting for them. "Now if ya'll excuse me ladies, the misses needs me to feed the foul. Have a lovely day." He tugged his forelock again and hobbled out.

"Such a dear, I wish my grandad was like him." Rachel said to Flynn when he left. "Ready?" She added.

Flynn winced as Rachel whistled.  She had never heard such a loud whistle before.  "ah, I see" she laughed, thinking about her own grandfather who was partially deaf.  Flynn didn't argue and slid down onto a hay bale.  Standing for too long on her leg was still quite painful.

She smiled though when Flamer appeared.  Her face flushed though at his words.  "I am?" she asked in surprise.  That was not what she had expected to hear.  Yes, the Borg were certainly mean and she didn't figure she could have fought her way out of there.  Thankfully she hadn't had to though.  She glanced at Rachel, wondering if the other woman had known she was the talk of the town.  "Pleasure to meet you, sir," she smiled.  She could see liking him very easily.

Flynn sat back and watched while Flamer got the horse and sulky ready.  She had to admit, she was getting excited.  She had never ridden in a sulky so this would be a new experience.  She smiled as he trotted off to head home.  "He is a sweetie," she smiled.

"Kind of old guy I wished I could have had for a granddad Flynn, both of mine were much like everyone else in out town. Boozed out or making it. Not the most enviable environment to grow up. I'm only glad that I was sent here, best thing that ever happened to me." Rachel said quietly. In truth, she had to admit in the short time she had gotten to know the locals, she had really fallen in love with them and the life they led here. Hopefully, the Air Force would forget she was here and the rest of her days could remain as they were. Possibly a false hope as far as the Air Force goes.

"Both him and Mrs Dann are really remarkable and lovable folks...its funny isn't it. I know his first name but not hers. Older women around here command a lot of respect, so its always Mrs or their official title unless they tell you otherwise." She had to chuckle at that, as even back home it was first name basis with everyone; which Rachel thought was a little too informal.

"Come on then, days a wasting. Lets get you up okay?" She stood by the side of the sullky, just to make sure Flynn didn't fall backwards getting into the frail looking contraption.

Flynn nodded.  "He did seem very kind."  She looked over at Rachel, not having known the other girl had had it so rough as a youngster.  Flynn hadn't had it that way.  "I never knew my one grandpa, but my other was always around and lots of fun."  She couldn't imagine it any other way.  She knew that not everyone was like that but it was still hard to think about.

Flynn giggled a bit.  "I shall remember that.  I don't want to accidentally offend anyone."  Of course her parents had always insisted that she call others by sir or ma'am, so it shouldn't be too hard to remember.

She looked at the sulky, wondering just how she was going to do this.  She had done stairs, but this was going to a bit different.  It took her a couple of tries to finally get on and by then she was hurting a bit as she used muscles that were still very sore.

"Steady there Flynn." Rachel said rather gently, helping her new friend up into the vehicle. "It's a little wobbly until we get going, great springs so at least it'll be a nice ride for you. You can relax now...at least for a while." Once that was done, Rachel skipped around to the opposite side and climbed in quickly. "You wouldn't believe the guffaws I made when I first met them. I think my face was permanently red for about a month." She laughed, clicked her tongue and flicked the reins. Besdada moved off smoothly, no jolt, no hijinks, just a smooth movement of muscled limbs. "Flamer and his wife are two of the best people I know here, apart from their grandson that is." She wasn't about to let on just yet, but the grandson was her fiance'. You could probably bet Flynn saw it in Rachel's eyes when she mentioned it though.

"Where to first? The market stalls or the shops? Oh and by the way.." She reached into her jacket pocket as the horse settled into a decent canter and handed Flynn an Amex card. "This is yours now." It had all Flynn's details on it. "Pin number is on the slip of paper clipped to it."

Flynn was grateful for Rachel's helping hand.  She certainly wasn't as steady as normal without being able to use both legs.  It felt good to sit down though and she carefully stretched her leg out a bit.  Not that the sulky was huge, but at least she had a little room and she wasn't tall after all.  She laughed a bit.  "that must have been interesting.  Flamer seems very nice."  She hadn't met his wife yet.  Flynn glanced over at Rachel, catching the look in her eye.  "Grandson, huh?  and what aren't you saying, Rachel?"

Flynn settled back into the sulky.  "Hmm, how about the stalls?" she said, but looked over as Rachel handed her something.  "Oh cool," she grinned.  Now she truly could shop.  This would be fun.  And she was curious what types of wares they had here.

"Yes, Captain. Give me a moment while I relay the question to the Alpha Site base commander. Go ahead and land on the designated coordinates set for your ship."

Aleksei detected an Australian accent, but other than that didn't know anything about the person on the other end of the radio transmission.
"Thank you sir, we'll see you soon. Hermes out."

As the pilot maneuvered the freighter over the specified coordinates, Aleksei opened a ship wide comm channel.
"Attention all hands, this is the Captain speaking. We have arrived at the Alpha site, and have been given landing clearance. Please make appropriate preparations. Captain out."

As the ship came in for a landing, Aleksei couldn't help but notice the various gun emplacements in the area. What they were protecting against he wasn't sure, but was glad for their presence as long as they weren't pointed at his ship. During re-entry the radio signals were obscured, but once they entered the lower atmosphere on final approach a second message came in to meet the base Commander in the Gate Room.

"Captain Babienko, would you care to join myself and the General Guderian in meeting General Chalmers? Major Avdeyev can handle the ship in the interim."

Upon receiving a response from his XO, Aleksei contacted Guderian.
"General, we have orders to meet the Alpha Site's CO in the Gate room. If you'll meet me at Airlock One we can head out."

"Thank you, Captain, I shall be right there," Margit said. She turned to her XO. "Eric, get the troops ready to disembark. We have a lot to do in a very short time." She and her staff had drawn up a list of things to do when they got to their destination. Putting up temporary quarters was the first on the list. She left to join the ship's captain in Airlock One.
