Title: PG8-K59 Alpha Site- West beach area
Post by: Mim on September 25, 2013, 02:30:56 AM
The western shores of the immediate Alpha site were only a few bare miles from the base. Tall trees somewhat similar in form to California redwood line the shore almost right down to the five mile long beach. It was quite dense forest underneath the giant trees, there were game trails leading everywhere and plenty of that; the Alpha base personnel had also made a road, hard packed with crushed limestone all the way down to the sandy beach from the main base road. Other than that, the area was simply a pristine seaside place that anyone could spend some time; to that point, there was a superb break on the northern end of the beach and surfing had been a topic of discussion among the younger members of the Alpha Site.

{Ziggesh-Borg} NPC
{Gemog-Borg} NPC
{Hakashk-Borg} NPC

A rustling in the bushes and more birds took to wing. A hushed curse in a guttural language and a another curse which sounded like pain. "Arggh! Gemog ya liddle mongrel, if ye be screaming like that I'll kill ya fer sure" The biggest brute said to a smaller comrade. These were Borg, there was of course a much longer name in their language, but the locals had trimmed it down to simply 'Borg'. All three of them carried what appeared to be Hozgura pulse rifles.

At over six foot something in human terms and almost as wide, the 'smaller' one simpered. "Ya shotted me ya big rat!"

"Yeth, he shotthed ya because ya disturben the birthds." A middle sized one, Hakashk said with an obvious lisp.

"I'm hungry, I gotta eat." Gemog replied, licking at the stub of his missing right forearm.

"If'n ya both don't shut it, I'll eat the both of ya. We're waiting for the oomans' they'll come...the Chief said they will come. So wait." The huge creature told them. Backhanding both of them in one swipe just for the sport of it.

<Saggitta exit ramp>

Flynn and Maria had gone straight from the bridge to the armory. There, they sought advice from a grizzled old veteran Marine Sergeant, the Chief armorer in fact. He supplied them with what would be suitable for two women according to their build, a rather smart guy. Maria being the smaller, carried a lighter pack, Flynn's a little larger. They both had G36K rifles with the M40 grenade launcher attached; both had Zat's and their own choice of side arms. In Maria's case, the venerable 9mm Beretta and both of them had a spare ammunition and some basic overnight rations and water. That was as much as the two of them could carry; not being full time soldiers, in Maria's case, she was a pilot before anything else; but she could handle herself. Three times while serving on the Daedalus under Steven, their ship had been boarded, twice by Wraith and once by the Alliance. The both of them were in the standard issue black BDU's of the SGC. Maria always though she looked ridiculous in a helmet, but the old sergeant insisted.

At the base of the ramp, they were met by a detachment of Marines, that was Linde's doing and Maria was grateful for it. She led them up the incline, back to where her and Flynn stood just a short while ago. From here they could see the gravel road leading to the beach and the heavy woods; that was their path. She turned to the Marine Lieutenant first. "I'll lead down to the tree line Lieutenant, from there I guess your boys can surround us ladies and we'll take it from there. I know this place, once we reach the trees, we have a good twenty to twenty five minute walk to the beach." Maria grinned at Flynn.

"Nervous? I am." She said honestly. "Move out." She gave the order as she had heard it many times and suited her words by leading them to the first line of tall trees.

Flynn had never had to dress in full gear like they were doing now, but she knew each part had its purpose and she wasn't going to argue.  Although she made a slight face at the helmet.  They did look odd, but surely had their purpose as well.  Flynn swung her pack onto her back and followed Maria.

She felt a bit better when she saw the Marines waiting for them.  At least they wouldn't be on their own.  Of course she was sure that her and Maria could stay hidden if need be.  Although she wasn't sending the men away.  Oh no, she was happy with the added protection.  She returned Maria's smile.

"A bit," she admitted.  "Never done anything like this before."  Of course there was a first time for everything.  She stayed close to Maria as they set out toward the trees and beach where they had seen the birds.

"Then we're on equal footing Flynn. The best I can come up with is some rather nasty encounters aboard the Deadalus..we were boarded a few times in the past. Not a thing I want to revisit quickly." As pretty as the forest was and the view from this point of the beach, something about it gave her the creeps. She tapped her radio. "Copy that, we'll keep a sharp eye on things. It is quite thick in the forest"  Maria waited for the Marines to move off, she hoped still, she was doing the right thing.

Flynn shuttered a little at that thought.  "Never experienced that either.  My time here on the Saggitta is my first," she said.  She gripped her gun tighter, not taking any chances.  She hoped it would end up being a false alarm and just some native animal that had gotten the birds going.  "The forest is kinda creepy," she said.  Normally Flynn loved the forest.  She had grown up in the woods after all, but this was different.  Something didn't feel right.

<<four Marine red-shirt NPCs>>

Corporal Danielson nervously looked around him. When the LT had told his four-person team off to escort the XO and the science officer, he thought it would be a nice break. Then he had been told there might be hostiles in the area. No problem, he thought. We've got plenty of firepower. Then he had heard the TACO saying that they couldn't get drone support because the foliage was too thick. "Taggart, take point," he ordered the team's scout, a short slightly chubby brunette. "Aye, aye, corp," she replied as she slipped ahead into the woods. "Garcia, left flank. Bailey, right flank." He didn't like some of the noises he was hearing in the woods. But then he was a farmboy who had grown up on the Kansas prairies who didn't have much experience in the forest.

"I was born and raised in DC and until I went to the Academy, other than the parks in the city, this is my first time in a place like this." Maria replied, getting a shiver up her spine as she looked at the massive trees. She craned her neck back to look up, almost falling backwards from the weight of her pack. "God...I can't even see the tops of them." She whispered, afraid to startle anything. It was quiet, she always imagined forests to be noisy with at least birds. Or was that unnatural?

Falling in the middle of the Marines, Maria did feel a little more at easy. Their professionalism, gave her some confidence at least.

***************

After some walking, at a fairly good pace, they finally reached an opening in the trees, looking at a sparkling sea in the sunset. It was beautiful to say the least. "Lieutenant." She said quietly. "Shouldn't we have seen something? I mean anything at all? Birds, a squirrel....I don't like this at all. Something spooked those birds and if wasn't a danger they would have come back." She knew that much. Marine birds always stayed near the same area unless chased off by something.

Flynn fell into step beside Maria and with the Marines.  She wasn't liking the feeling she was getting from the forest, but she couldn't explain why.  "Normally I like being in the woods," she said, walking with Maria.  "This is different though."  She felt like the trees were watching them, ready to reach out and grab them at any moment.  She shuttered at the mere thought and actually wanted to turn around, but didn't want to seem like a chicken.

"Colonel Aguayo, I grew up in the Wisconsin woods," Taggart said. "Near Lake Michigan. Forests do not get his quiet unless there is something very wrong." Danielson and the other Marines began looking around the party, every sense alert for something. "Ma'am, with all due respect, I suggest we get ourselves back to the perimeter."

Normally Maria wasn't one for allowing nerves to get to her. But this was different, they were on unfamiliar territory, they were a small band, admittedly with a lot of fire power, but for the first reason alone and being so far from safety, Taggart was right in his assumption. "You're both right. I don't like the hairs standing up on my neck as they are. There is something terribly wrong with this picture and I for one don't want to be a part of the canvas. Turn us around elTee, Flynn and I will bring up the rear."

With that, Maria ushered Flynn in behind the Marines a few paces back. The two women were side by side and Maria had the north end of the beach to her left as they faced the pathway back. "I don't want to alarm the Marines, Flynn. I'm supposed to set by example, but to tell you the truth, I feel utterly haunted just standing here and I have no idea why."

Flynn agreed with Taggart.  It wasn't good when a forest was so quiet.  It could mean trouble and being a planet they weren't familiar with wasn't helping.  Flynn turned and fell in step with Maria.  Hopefully they made it back to the ship without any problems.  She certainly felt uneasy.

Flynn glanced over at her friend.  "I know what you mean.  It's an eery, creepy feeling," she agreed.  Like they were being watched.  But by what or who?  She shivered at the mere thought.

{Ziggesh-Borg} NPC
{Gemog-Borg} NPC
{Hakashk-Borg} NPC

The three Borg sat in wait, discontented grumbling all the while, as they waited for the humans the Chief assured them was going to come. the forest was silent, the animals scared off by the Borg, or just wary of them. And finally, their patience was rewarded as they heard the sound of boots walking along the path, headed towards them. Rifles were checked again, as they prepared to move.

Then the humans came into view, well armed soldiers at the front, while two females in slightly different uniforms brought up the rear. It was apparent that they were wary, but surprise would still be on the Borg's side.

"Alroyt, me an Hakoshk'll take down them soldiers. Gemog, you keep the two pretties in back form runnin," Ziggesh said quietly, the two nodding in agreement as they took aim with their Hozguran pulse rifles.

The first sign the Marines would have that they were under attack was as pulse rifle blasts flew at them, three blasts seeking to take down the Marines now, so this would be easier. Hakoshk and Ziggesh would keep up their suppressing fire on the Marines, and Gemog turned his rifle to the rear, planting a few shots into trees to keep Maria and Flynn from running. The thrill of battle soared through all three of them as they launched the ambush. Now was the time to fight, to win honor and glory, and in doing so, strengthen their people.

It all happened so fast. One moment Flynn and Maria we about to follow the Marines back up the trail, the next moment all hell broke loose and a hail of weapons fire descended on their position. Three of the Marines went down in the first exchange, hopefully the others got into a good firing position, because Maria couldn't see. Her sight was blinded by the flash of an unfamiliar energy weapon and it had forced her and Flynn to fall back even further behind the Marines.

They were cut off, there was no way for them to get back into line with their escort and even as she heard the call from  Steven it was too late. Maria's eyes cleared just a little and she saw the hulking brute with the weapon in among the closest trees. She did what she was taught to do, pulling Flynn down with her. "We're cut off, we need to go around somehow." Maria said as she now crouched close to the ground, pulling Flynn as far as she could away from this brute. Pulling back on the bolt, now on her knees she started firing at the closest beast. So this was the Borg? Her stomach turned over, knowing that her life might end here and now. Two hits registered by the 'puffs' of dust off the thing but he still stood his ground. She grabbed her radio link and looked in dismay to see it snapped in half. Tears welled in her eyes.

One minute Flynn had been talking to Maria about how creepy the forest was and the next she found herself being pulled onto the ground beside Maria.  Her eyes widened as a couple shots hit behind them, keeping them pinned where they were.  She gripped her gun in her hands and realized how much she was shaking.  She had never actually been in real combat like this.  Flynn looked around for their escort, but she couldn't see the marines anywhere, but she hoped that they were alright.

She looked over at Maria as the other woman started to pull her along the forest floor.  "Then we've got to get to cover," she whispered, her voice trembling.  She hadn't spotted the Borg yet as she was concentrating on Maria.  Although when Maria turned to fire Flynn got her first view of the Borg.  And it was not a good thing.  The thing was a monster and could easily snap her and Maria in half.  She crawled up beside her friend to aim her own gun.  "We've got to get to cover and fast," she whispered.

{Hakashk-Borg} NPC

Pulse lasers flew through the sky, a bright counterpoint to the beating fire of P90's as the Marines responded to the Borg attack. But still, the surprise attack had taken down part of the escort, and the ones the Borg could see were important, Maria and Flynn, were cut off, but were shooting back now, though they weren't in cover. Ziggesh glanced over to see Gemog take some hits from the female human, and moved over, elbowing the other Borg out of the way. "Get over there and keep them soldiers busy while I get the homan," he ordered, and Gemog meekly agreed, shifting his fire to the marines.

Of course Ziggesh's motivation was purely self interest, figuring he'd get the greatest reward for bringing back the human, even though is intention wasn't to have the others get killed. But no loss if they did. With a liud roar, he shouldered his rifle to the side, rapidly advancing upon the females, his attention directed to the more annoying one, who was obviously trained in combat. Taking the hits like a warrior, he stomped down to try and knock the gun away, the human rising up now for a better shot. But it didn't matter much as he lashed out with speed she probably wasn't expecting, grabbing Maria and lifting her off her feet as he looked into her eyes with a snarl, before hurling her into a tree, to fall to the ground.

That distraction out of the way, he turned to the other, the one with brown hair who practically reeked of fear, causing his face to crinkle in disgust. This was no warrior, and had no place on the battlefield amongst men. And it appeared she had learned that to her detriment, as she was now trying to escape. But he couldn't have that. So he went after her, catching up with his better knowledge and speed in this terrain before he slammed a fist into the back of her head. Fallen, he, hit her a few more times to make sure she wouldn't be waking up while in transit, and then slung Flynn over his shoulder.

Glancing back at the ongoing firefight, Ziggesh growled before tramping through the forest back to the Chief, prize on tow.

"A million trees and we can't..." Maria began before her eyes widened, the largest of the three had left his position with a speed that defied his immense bulk, Maria tried her best to fire with all her worth but it just wasn't her day. Her bloody rifle misfired twice, and by the time she had cleared the breach and fired again she was being hurled through the air. Slamming against the bole of a tree she went limp as her arm snapped, her weapon falling to the ground and finally to add insult to injury, her head banged so hard against the tree trunk, she was out cold.

Flynn silently searched the area.  Maria was right.  There wasn't anywhere to hide and there was no way to get to the remaining marines so they were on their own.  She turned back around as Maria got to her feet to fire at the Borg.  "Maria!" she shouted as her friend was flung through the air and into a tree.

Flynn's eyes widened as the Borg turned on her.  She couldn't get around him to get to Maria, so she hoped to outrun him and double back to get to her friend.  She took off at a dead run, but the Borg was much faster then she was.  The young woman gasped as she was flung through the air from a powerful blow from his fist.  Before Flynn could even think about getting back up his fist landed on her body again, causing her to groan and slip into unconsciousness.

{Ziggesh-Borg} NPC

Ziggesh thudded away from the firefight, the sound of traded fire fading into the distance as he made his way back towards the camp. Ground shook, sticks snapped, and logs cracked as he bounded through the forest, on strong legs built by years of fighting and training. The human was a burden, but one he could carry, her unconscious form making it all the easier.

Soon though, it began to grow dark. The wind picked up, and the rain came down, first scattered, then hard, pounding, bouncing off thick skin as he moved through the forest. But despite how much harder this made it to move, and slowed him down, he welcomed it. with this kind of rain, their aircraft would be unable to fly, and would make discovery or interception by a rescue team much less likely. And he accepted the sting of the rain, with it's assistance, as he continued towards the camp, slower now, but still inexorable, carrying his prize.

Flynn didn't move or react to anything for quite some time.  When she finally did start to come around she woke to sudden pain through her whole body.  She moaned softly and started to shiver as the rain hit her unprotected body.  She hadn't come prepared for a storm and her clothes were soaked.  "Maria?" she mumbled.  She had no idea where she was or why she was moving so fast.  The last thing she could remember clearly was being with Maria and the marines, heading back to the Saggitta.  She closed her eyes tightly as her head was pounding and she couldn't think straight anyhow.

The flight path of Lucille's little ship took them south for about thirty kilometers, she then turned due west where the trees were lowest, that is if you could call trees that still topped over a hundred feet the lowest. They came across the broad expanse of the beach and by that time, true to the Saggitta's update the storm had reached the coast and the 'Iron Maiden' felt the first brunt of it, as it bucked and rocked under the force of the gale blowing in from the sea. "They'll be near our coast road, I'm certain of that. If they were hit there, they shouldn't be too far into the forest, we should find them easily. I saw Jordan was on her way Steven, so she'll come in from the east." She didn't have a plan right there and then, but at least they should have some fire power if needed. Lucille moved the ship north at wave top level, the inertia dampeners were now compensating for the storm, which made flying that much easier.

Petty Officer Claudia Monroe (NPC)

"I have some gum, Commander," Claudia said reaching into her pocket and taking out a small unopened pack and handing it to Commander O'Neil. "Keep the pack, ma'am; I have more."

Claudia went back to scanning the area as they drove along. She might spend most of her time in the cafeteria making food for the other service men and women, but in her free time she took extra field training exercises for cases just like this. Plus the more she watched and learned from her fellow officers she knew she wanted to be more than just a cook. This was just the test she needed to prove to herself she can handle what comes with the job of being in the field and fighting. Plus she would do anything to save her XO and science officer and their team.

"Hammer, can you pick up anything?" Steven said to the EWO in the seat behind him. The young woman hesitated for a moment, then called out. "Bodies on the ground!" She highlighted the location on Lucy's console. "I've picked Colonel Aguayo's transponder." Unlike the minicoms, the small transponders they all wore were very tough and hard to put out of commission.

Linde's voice came over the circuit. "Iron Maiden, SR-1 is on the way to help secure the area. I've recalled the drones. They can't spot anything in this weather."

{Ziggesh-Borg} NPC

The rain was really coming down now, wind occasionally buffeting Ziggesh to the side as he made his way towards their camp while avoiding the roads the humans liked to use. Being raised to be a warrior, his sense of direction was particularly acute, and their scouts had marked out paths a long time ago, though the markers were hard to see during the storms that could wrack the region.

as he pushed ahead, he could barely make out the human slung over his shoulder stirring, her waking from unconsciousness masked somewhat by the noise and violence of the storm. He didn't know who this 'Maria was', but as long as she didn't make herself too bothersome, he would let her stay awake.

Flynn's head was pounding.  She kept her eyes firmly closed and fought back tears.  She didn't know where she was or where her friend had gone to.  She remembered seeing some of those ugly Borg things attacking them, then Maria getting flung toward a tree.  Then everything had gone black.  "Where am I?" she asked, her body aching too much to try moving yet.  Not until she knew exactly where she was. "Where are you taking me?"

Ziggesh kept moving, not wanting to give the humans, with their unfair luck, a chance to stumble upon him. The human was speaking now, though she was asking stupid questions that should have been obvious, and an answer wasn't worth the breath it would take, so he focused on running, drawing ever nearer the camp. The hit on the head must have scrambled her brains, since where they were was easy to see, and it wouldn't be that hard to figure out where they were going.

Quickly, Lucille hit the door control, both rear loading ramp and side doors opened with a hiss of air, she was then unbuckled and out of her seat, but had to wait for those behind her to move first. "We don't have time to waste." She told them, her voice a little cracked from breathing the O2, even for just that short period. When she heard the relay about the Pentagon, she shivered, if there are attacks that close to home, it was something to worry about, not that she could do anything from here. Lucille put that out of her mind for the moment. "If Maria and the others are injured, we need to move fast. Bleeding here in this forest can attract all kinds of parasites, the worst are leeches." By the time they got there, Jordan should be in place as well, hopefully they were only going to find wounded, there already had been too much death for the sake of this god forsaken planet.

The news from the Pentagon had disturbed him. An attack right there in one of the world's most secure facilities. What was worse was that he was going to have to be the one to tell Maria. He hit his harness release and ran over to Maria as soon as the way was clear, drawing his pistol as he moved. He knelt down to check her vital signs. "She's alive!" He looked around for the others. One of the Marines was moving weakly. He counted. "Flynn's not here."

The storm was  getting worse as was Flynn's shivering.  She remembered being at Alpha Site and her and Maria going to check out a disturbance.  She had also figured out that one of those ugly creatures had a hold of her, but she didn't know where they were going and apparently he wasn't going to say anything.  "Put me down!" she demanded, pounding on his back.  She had lost her weapons and the only thing she had was the knife that she carried in her boot.  "And what have you done with Maria?"  She wasn't exactly being smart as he was much bigger then her and still had his weapon, but at least she could go down swinging.

Mesa was  getting antsy as they got closer.  She feared for her two friends as she didn't know what they may have gotten into.  she also didn't want to have to tell Guy that something had happened to Flynn.  "Jordan, how much further?" she asked, looking around.  She had never been to the Alpha Site so she didn't know her way around at all.

((OOC: figured they were probably on their way.  Hope I was right.  Tell me if it's different Mel))

Taking the gum from Claudia, Jordan stuffed two sticks in her mouth and began chewing furiously, then she spat out half realising she had put way too much in."Thanks Monroe, that will help fine." The humvee bolted down the track, it was a rough ride as it was only meant for walking, or at best a slow drive, but there was no time for being kind to the vehicles chasis right now.
It only took a bare few minutes to traverse the distance and with the 'Life signs detector' stuck to the dash, Jordan was able to see what they were up against before they even arrived. "Two minutes Mesa..." But it was less than that and Jordan's eyes opened wide. Both Steven and Lucille were already there and so to were two unfriendlies off to the right side of them in the trees. "Damnit! Monroe, open up that MG, clean that area out to the right of the Generals and please don't hit them." There was no time to call out, they would simply have to duck. Jordan pulled the Humvee up as close as she could without spraying the others with debris, so far the Borg hadn't reacted, they were slow like that sometimes.

((OOC there are two Borg still alive. Please wait for Gate Girl and her character to clear them out with the .50 MG :D))

"I'm on it, ma'am!"  Claudia yelled back as she got on the MG. "I got this!" Making sure the MG was loaded, she cocked and started firing. She prayed to the high heavens that she didn't hit any of their men. She didn't want that on her conscience for the rest of her life.

Jordan watched the LSD closely and within seconds of Claudia's burst, the two red dots blinked out. She reached up behind her and tugged on the other woman's trouser leg, she had to shout into her coms, such was the racket of both gun and shells raining down. "Cease fire....Claudia CEASE FIRE!" The gun went silent and Jordan was out of the vehicle in a flash. The other two girls would have to follow as best as they could.

Running over to join the others, the first thing she did was apologise. "Sorry for the racket Generals, you were under a threat. Its gone and done now." She kneeled down beside Maria, seeing her left arm and the blood coming from her head. "She is alive at least. How are the others?" Jordan looked around, she didn't know at this point that Flynn was missing. "I think her arm is broken. We really need a medic down here sir...ma'am." She felt helpless. The Marines didn't fair any better either. But at least those responsible were done for, that was some consolation.

For a single moment as Lucille joined Steven at Maria's side, all was quiet and tranquil. It didn't even dawn on her that the enemy was still here, not when Steven mentioned that his science officer was missing. The first thought that occurred to her, was that they had taken a captive, as they so often do and then bolted. Most of the time, the captives had returned unharmed, to tell of harrowing tales from their time with the Borg and the sport those creatures made and so often those people who had returned felt they would have been better off dead, rather than deal with the post traumatic stress from their ordeal. But that moment of silence was broken in a heart beat with the deafening sound of a heavy calibre machine gun, which seemed to be right inside Lucille's head. Instinctively she placed her body over Maria's. When it was done and Jordan had joined them, she wrinkled her nose and gave her XO and approving nod.

"We'd be dead otherwise Jordan, no need for the apology." She stood and looked around, there wasn't much they could do now, other than move the wounded back to base and then organise a search for Flynn from there. "We can get the injured into the 401 Steven if you wish, it would be more expedient for them at least. I'll give Joselle a call and see if we can get some of her trackers down here, we'll never find your girl with our own resources, as you have already found, this forest resists our rather more advanced detection methods."

Okay, now the human was getting annoying. It was one thing to essentially run back through the forest, on a journey that would tax his stamina and endurance even if he didn't encounter one of  his brothers along the way while in the middle of a monsoon. It was another to do it with a protesting human. and the fists on his back would get annoying, even if they were ineffective. And as such, they needed to be ended.

With a grunt, he came to a stop, removing Flynn from his shoulder, and dropping her to the ground as he stood still, despite the buffeting of the wind, tall and menacing. He then went into motion, implacably stepped forward to grab Flynn, a crushing grip on her shoulder before he lifted her up by her neck, slamming her against a tree as well.

"You are my prisoner," he grunted in the halting version of the Tau'ri's language the Borg had learned. "No resist, no get knocked out." His eyes shone black with the seriousness of his statement.

Mesa jumped out of the humvee as soon as it was safe and darted over to where she had seen Maria.  Her eyes scanned the territory around them.  "Where's Flynn?" she demanded, fear in her voice.  Surely she was just overlooking the younger woman.  She had to just be overlooking her.  Flynn couldn't be gone.

Flynn winced as she was dropped to the ground and found herself looking at a pair of legs.  Her eyes widened as she followed the legs up to the top of his head.  Oh shoot!  She was done for.  No weapons, no one around.  How was she ever going to get out of this one?  Flynn gasped and cried out softly as her back met the tree, knocking all breath from her lungs.  Her legs dangled under her as she weakly struggled to get air into her lungs.

"Why...me?" she managed to gasp out.  What would the Borg want with her?

"My thanks, Jordan," Steven said. He moved to set up the fighter to transport the injured back to the main base. Major Durutte arrived in a Humvee with SR-1. Caldwell returned his salute. "Mon general, we came as soon as we could," said the French paratrooper. "Alain, start a sweep of the area to see if you can find any trace of Doctor Hart. A word of warning. The hostiles are extremely woodwise and may not leave many traces to us to follow. General Chambers has friendly relations with the locals and will get them to help. They know the area much better than we do."

Claudia helped with the injured as best as she could. She was just a mere cook and knew nothing about medicine, but hopefully just her words of encouragement helped the injured and gave them some hope at least. She grabbed some extra ammo off the injured officers and stuffed them in her pockets as she found Commander O'Neil and walked over to her asking, "What's next, Commander?"

Ziggesh grunted, a heavy, dark sound that was what he used for a mocking laugh. "Weak," he growled, baring his teeth as his grip tightened almost imperceptibly around her throat, as if sensing her fear. "But smart. The Chief wants yer help. And yah better not say no." He hefted a blade, one of the many he had in his possession at the moment, as a sign of exactly how bad  it would be for her.

Help had arrived and it was welcomed; not the rain though. It began with a soft patter on the broad leaves of the trees, a westerly, cold and blustery added to the misery and before anyone could ask 'Is that rain?'; the downpour came not in buckets, but in barrels. With that, the wind blew the rain almost horizontal and soon after it was howling, leaves and debris began falling from above and it was all the demure Lucille could do to stand. Water hit her face with a sting, it may well have been hail, yet it wasn't; she had to shout to be heard.

"STEVEN! THERE ARE SIX LITTER STRETCHERS IN THE BACK OF MY AIRCRAFT AND A FULL MEDICAL OUT KIT." She could barely hear her own words as the wind and rain whipped around her head. She looked up for a bare moment, to see the light they had a moment ago, now almost blacked out by the thunder heads. At this hour, the sun would stay up another forty minutes or so; if they could see it. Lucille grunted as she had to move her head quickly to avoid a falling branch. "GET THESE PEOPLE INTO THE 'MAIDEN' NOW! LEAVE THE VEHICLES, WE'LL COME BACK FOR THEM LATER. JORDAN! WE NEED TO CONTACT JOSELLE IMMEDIATELY, HAVE HER MEET US IN THE BUNKER WITHIN THE HOUR."

It was madness, why did it always come upon her when drama was at their door. It was the same last year, one of their airman had gone missing at the same time the monsoon hit. It took them eight days to find him, starving and hidden in a cave not two kilometers from the base. "MOVE IT! ALL OF YOU. WE CAN'T STAY HERE MUCH LONGER." She looked down at Maria, she would have to be moved first.

They got the injured on board the 'Iron Maiden' as quickly as they could, then everyone clambered on board and the aircraft lifted off for the base. Sitting in the co-pilot's seat Steven contemplated two things. The first was how to how to secure Alpha Site once and for all. The second was how to tell Maria that her man was probably dead. He did not look forward to that task.

Once Lucy gave the order, things happened fast and smoothly. No one seemed to be bothered by the storm and the torrential wind swept rain, hard rain at that; which followed. Jordan at least was used to it, all part of her training, years of grueling exercises doing retrievals and evacs in all kinds of weather..this was no different. After some of Roberts people had raced to the 401 and brought back the stretchers, Maria was gently lifted first, the wounded Marines came after her, each one secured within the rear of the small ship either side. Only perhaps Jordan had any effective field first aid training, so she put that to good use; making the Saggitta's XO comfortable and placing a temporary 3 piece emergency cast on the woman's arm. She bathed her head wound, it was naasty and by the time that was done, the last of the Marines and everyone else was aboard.

Plugging into a radio socket on the side of the 401 near where she stood, Jordan called her Commander, at the same time hitting the door closed button. "All on General Chalmers, whenever you are ready." She sat on the side seating, looking at the others, this was not a good day at all. You could see everyone felt it.

"We'll get her back." Jordan said to Mesa, but in essence she was telling everyone.

Flynn was losing air fast and she couldn't hide her fear even though she could see that the Borg was feeding on it.  When he hefted the blade in his hand her eyes widened and she just managed not to whimper.  "Help?" she gasped, her breath coming fast and uneven.  The wind was howling and making her shiver.  Her clothes had long since been drenched and now clung to her slim body.  "Cold," she managed through chattering teeth.  Okay, fine, maybe that made her weak, but she was freezing.

Mesa helped where she could getting everyone loaded.  She kept glancing around, hoping and praying that Flynn would show up running out of the woods, claiming she had just gotten separated.  Looking at the marines and Maria though she knew that wouldn't happen.  Her friend was out there somewhere and Mesa couldn't do a thing about it.  She slipped onto the ship after everyone else and sat across from Jordan.  "We have too," she whispered.

To Lucille, the whole thing was a mess from the getgo. Maria and Flynn, should never had been allowed to venture out from the base when they did, even with their Marine escort, those numbers simply didn't stack up and the purpose for them coming out here was at best futile. After it was all done, with Lucille back where she belonged, at the controls of her beloved 'Iron Maiden' she dusted off the moment she heard the rear cargo door sealed. She said nothing, she was seething inside that something so simple as following the rules of engagement could be flaunted by experienced officers, once Maria was well enough, and back home, she would be most likely looking at charges, at best, a demotion in rank.

Ziggesh snorted, not feeling like trying to explain this to the human, when the Chief could do so much more of a better job at it. How was he supposed to explain to her that she was going to be instrumental in restoring their race to it's feared status, and make them conquerors again. as well, now he had to deal with her being cold in this rain. As much as he would love to ignore it, he had been told to bring back a live human, so he couldn't risk her, you know, dying.

Almost with a sigh, he dropped Flynn to the ground so she could breathe, though he kept his imposing presence near as he scanned the surroundings for a place he could put her to ride out the storm, or just warm her up.

Flynn continued to shiver, rather from fear or the cold was anyone's guess.  She coughed a bit though as the Borg dropped her onto the ground and she huddled in on herself.  Now would be a good time to try to run, but she had no idea where she even was or how far from help.  In this weather she was smart enough to know that she wouldn't make it far.  Instead she just looked up at the Borg with stormy gray eyes eyes, wondering what he was going to do with her.

Ziggesh didn't pay much attention to the struggling Flynn, knowing she wouldn't run for it in this weather. She was smart enough to know that she'd probably fall victim to the weather before she could get back, so she wouldn't go for it. Finally, his eyes spotted a possible place, amongst the blowing trees, flashes of lightning the split the sky with thunderous crashes, and driving rain. Reaching down, he hauled Flynn to her feet and set off, assisting the human in not getting blown away in the course of their trek.

Finally reached it. Most likely a den for some wildlife that had been vacated, it was more of an indent in the hillside than a cave, but it would suit in keeping them dry, though not miserable. Ziggesh took up guard near the entrance to make sure nothing found them and Flynn didn't try running for it, while leaving her to figure out how to make a fire from the scraps left over in the den.

Flynn stayed perfectly still.  There was no sense in making this Borg angry when she couldn't escape.  If the storm passed maybe she could make a break for it.  She had some survival skills from growing up on a ranch and she was more likely to get father without the wind blowing every which way.  She gasped softly as he grabbed her arm and hauled her to her feet.  Flynn wrapped her arms around her waist, shivering badly.  If she only ended up with a cold from this she would be lucky.

Her eyes brightened just a bit when she saw the hole in the hillside.  At least it would be a bit of shelter.  Flynn crawled inside while Ziggesh stayed outside.  Fine, whatever he wanted to do.  She was freezing and had to get so warmth back in her body.  She looked around the cave, managing to find some dead leaves that weren't too wet.  She made a pile and found a couple rocks.  Guy had always been better as this, but Fred had shown her a few times too and after a good three or four tries she managed to get a little fire going.  The young woman shed her jacket and shirt, leaving her in a tank top.  Yes, it wasn't warm, but her clothes were drenched clear through and only making her colder.  What she would love was a blanket to wrap up in so she could get out of her drenched pants as well and give her clothing a chance to dry.

Finally, after an indeterminate length of time, at least for Flynn, since the Borg would tell her the passing of time. Before Flynn was completely dry she found herself thrown over the Borg's shoulder once again.  She had tried to protest and even tried to slip around him, but to no avail.  He was quick for his size and he had been able to block her escape.  In the end she was back in the position she had been in before, being trapped on the Borg's shoulder with no idea of where she was going.

<<From Landing Area>>

At the divide in the road, just outside the natural bowl of the landing area, Josile spoke to her second in command, a young flame haired man, upon a large bay stallion. She gave him orders and with a slap of the fist across his chest, the bulk of her army headed North by the inland road. Hopefully, if they did not meet any opposition, they would be in place to ride upon the camp of the Borg King, well before the tracking party found their quarry.

After the division, she led the remainder down the wet but hard packed road to the beach area and stopped with her hand up at the point where Flynn and Maria were attacked. She dismounted, hands on hips and looked up at the others.

"I see there were three of the brutes, this much is clear. The one we seek is carrying his burden, look here." She pointed to muddy boot tracks that seem to be slightly heavier in print than at an earlier point. Even Jordan could see that.

Jordan moved her mount over and looked down, she agreed. But what use was that information at this point other than to ask. "Will that give us some advantage Josile? Will it slow him down at all?" She gazed at the prints and then looked at her companions. "It will be dark within the next 15 minutes, at that point it will be almost impossible to track through the forest."

"To answer your question, no it won't. A large mountain Borg such as this one, can carry a great load at speed for quite some time. To the second, we will ride parallel to the forest by sea for as far as we can. Within two to three hours, we will turn into the forest but at that point, it is thinner and sparser as we reach the foothills. "

"General, what do you think? We proceed, nightfall or not?" Jordan asked, hoping she wasn't leading her friends into yet more trouble. Jordan gave Mesa and Claudia an apologetic look.

Steven looked at Josile. "We will follow Josile's lead. She knows this terrain and this enemy and we don't. We have night vision devices in our packs, but they won't work very well in this terrain and weather. I personally would like to ride all night, but getting there exhausted and hungry won't do us a bit of good."

Mesa was trying hard to hold it together.  When she saw the footprints though and knew that Flynn had definitely been taken prisoner she nearly lost it.  She closed her eyes tightly and counted to ten, knowing it wouldn't do her any good to lose her temper.  It wouldn't bring Flynn back and it might just get her sent back to the ship.

She turned to Steven when Jordan asked what they would do.  She wanted nothing more then keep riding, but knew that he was right too.  If they were exhausted it wouldn't do them any good.  And Josile knew this area better then any of them, so it would be wise to follow her.

The young woman's words spoke of someone who could be of use, perhaps the two of them could track while the rest of the party rode along the beach. That way at least they would have better coverage and if their quarry had diverted either way, at least someone would know. "I appreciate the offer Bella, if you can ride as well as I have just witnessed, your 'so-so' remark was taken lightly." She looked at Jordan and the others. "General Caldwell, Jordan. With your leave, I will take young Bella with me through the forest paths, we can continue tracking until that point we meet again north. We shall be within hailing distance though."

Mesa looked around the forest.  She had no doubt that this was the way Flynn had been taken.  Her poor friend.  She gently nudged her horse's sides, so that she could be closer to Josile and Bella.  "If you would approve, I would like to join the two of you.  I have a little tracking experience and I will not slow you up."  She had ridden horses enough to know how to keep up.  And she would let them take the lead as Josile knew this forest and it seemed Bella knew a bit about tracking as well.

He checked once again to make sure that his pistol and knife were ready for action, then lifted his minicom to his lips. "Caldwell to Saggitta. "We'll make camp as soon as we can, but I wish to keep going for as long as possible." Josile told them. "Keep as close to the shelter of the forest as you can Jordan, you know how quickly the tide can change and I don't think we're done with the weather either."

"Make it two hours Josile. We should be at the end of the beach or near to it by then. We can camp at Suttlers Rock." With that Jordan turned her horse around and beckoned the others to follow her further down the path to the sandy foreshore. She knew that Josile was warning her more about 'other' things that can come out of the sea at night, so her party would ride as close as they could to the trees.

Once Jordan had turned her horse, Josile spoke to Claudia before she to rode off. "We will be fine Claudia Monroe, it is your group that will be at risk the most. Watch the tide, and watch for air blows in the surf, with a full moon, you will see them. If they move ashore, get into the forest and don't move. Understand?" She waited before moving her search team off, Josile needed to know they all knew what could happen. "General Caldwell, take care of Jordan, she is a fine woman, but bull headed and will take unnecessary risks."

Mesa was thankful that Steven didn't see a reason for her to stay behind.  At least if she was helping Josile she felt like she was helping Flynn as well.  She just prayed that her friend was still safe.  She turned her horse to follow Josile.  It sounded like her other friends were going to have to be very careful as well.  And she had  to admit, she was wondering how Maria was doing as well.  If she had been awake she might have been able to tell them a bit more about what had happened.

The party sped off down the beach. As much as Steven would like to have gone to a full gallop, he knew full well that wearing out their mounts would not be a good thing. He looked at Linde and she nodded. She has also caught the hint from Josile and was watching the beach warily. Steven checked to make sure that his pistol was loose in it's holster and that his rifle was ready to come out of its boot on the saddle. He really didn't want to be taken by surprise by some amphibious beastie.

Night fell quickly in the forest; although the light of the setting sun filtered through the trees, it was gloomy and the silence made it all the more so. "Mesa, I will lead, keep young Bella in between us, but don't stray too far behind. No more that a pace or two gap." Josile's voice was soft, but it carried as if on an echo. "Bella, keep close to me girl and make sure you watch the upper branches of the trees. That for now is where our most likely threat might come. I will follow this Borg's trail, so far he hasn't tried to hide his path."

The pace was a little more than a canter, the initial thrill of the ride had settled down and Jordan, following Josile's instructions, kept to the forest side of the wide sand. But with each few hundred meters they passed, she could see the tide slowly creeping in. The earlier storm had abated, but she knew all too well, that was only the introduction so to speak. More and worse was to come; not to mention that she as well as a few others from the Alpha Site had seen what can crawl out of the sea when the moons were high. "Don't bunch up!" She called out over her shoulder. "But don't get to near the water line either. I don't want to alarm you, but lets just say, some of the things that feed at night from the sea, are rather big." Big, nasty, teeth, and the ability to get up a momentum that would carry them a hundred feet up the sand.

Mesa nodded as she listened to Josile's instructions.  "Got it," she said as she pulled up on the reins a bit.  Her mount slowed and they soon slipped in behind Bella, making sure not to leave much of a gap between them, but enough.  Mesa kept looking around, shivers going up and down her spine. Everything about this forest was making her a bit jumpy.  And the fact that her younger friend was out here wasn't helping.  "Do you think we'll find them?" she asked softly.

Fading sun from the sky as quickly but surely falling, falling down still, as breathtaking sight it can be. With the upcoming day comes night.
Bella walked with Josie and Mesa in the forest, in which was the silence, it sounded so comfortable, although on the other side of scary. Josie did not want to lose Bella, after all, They should then worry about more work, and in the forest they would remain even longer, plus you could not afford it.
,,That's okay, I keep up with you, do not worry, also I can go first. I'll keep an eye on those branches, always inject in the face, it happened sometimes to you Major? Josile, Rainha? It's uncomfortable.'' Bella said to Josel, jibe with a little laugh. Bella was brave and it was impossible to say whether Bella should really fear does sometimes.
,,What do you think that we find?'' Bella was a interested, she went with her companions and nice branches by branches.

"That is my plan Mesa McCaffry, I do not intend to allow these Borg to get the upper hand upon us at any time." Josile replied, leading them up a small incline. Her eyes, ears and all her senses were attuned to the forest, it was her home, where she grew up and survived as did all the Cavaleiros. Plainsmen originally, but forced into living a forest life ages ago with the horses when the first Goa'uld showed up, that was Nirtii, then Camulus. Both of them failed though in trying to subdue them, both tried to do more, only to be turned back by the Asgard. "Bella, high in the trees is a species of ape, with a tail, I believe in your world you call them monkeys. These are not such as those, they eat meat and are scavengers, they will attack without cause, but they are cowardly to. If you see one, shoot it, the others will fall back." She rode on, following the trail.

Mesa managed a weak smile.  Her eyes kept darting back and forth as she wasn't used to the different sounds of this forest.  she imagined her friend was probably scared out of her wits.  "I just don't understand why they would take Flynn," she admitted.  Mesa shuttered as Josile told them about the monkeys.  Well, those certainly weren't like monkeys back home.  Of course she had never really liked monkeys and this was just one more reason to not like them.

Petty Officer Claudia Monroe (NPC)

Claudia was alarmed by Jordan's comment and her eyes immediately went to the water. She heard the stories in the cafeteria, but just thought the officers were trying to scare those who didn't get out much. Hearing it from her commander now she knew it was no tale. She used her night vision goggles to scan the water and saw some steam blowing off the top of the water. She pulled her horse to a stop and caught a glimpse of something riding with the waves and waited a few seconds to make sure it was actually there then yelled, "Commander, there's something in the water! I don't know if its something like earth's whales or something worse!"

"What?" Jordan stopped her horse, she heard the loud steam noise before she saw anything, flipping down her NVG's she looked towards the waves. "Ride! Ride like the devil is on your arse and head for those high sand hills." She ordered. Two hundred metres north of them, was a ridge line of sand, quite high. What Jordan saw, was basically your worst night mares come true. She had read about Kraken in stories, and she had seen what would be the closest thing to them here. Part whale, part giant squid, 75 tons of teeth and tentacles.

She spurred her mount forward, the sand made it harder, but her heart was racing faster. Then there was the scream, Jordan pulled up so violently she almost came off; she saw, as one long slimy black arm whipped both horse and rider away into the sea, she barely saw who it was, but at the last moment she recogised the face of one of her own, a young Marine, Wayne Maxwell. "Sh*t!........."

Claudia and her mare made their way up the sand hill as fast as they could. When they got to the top Claudia turned them around to look. She heard the screams of the man behind her as they ran, but didn't have time to look. She got a good look at the creature and couldn't believe what she was seeing. It looked like a giant...whale squid.

"What the--?!" Claudia exclaimed. "What in the name of Hades is that? It looks like something out of one of those bad science fiction movies."

"The Borg rarely take your people, its very rare Mesa, so there must be a reason behind it" Josile tried to explain. "Whenever they have taken ours, it has always been at times of drought, when game is scarce. So they take a child or two and demand in return grain or some of our cattle. That would be a single tribe or even a lone family of them. They are savage, but they are not cannibals, of that I can assure you." She moved a little further on, studying the ground in the fading light. "They stopped here, it would seem there was a struggle between them. But there is no blood and his tracks became heavier again, so he is still carrying her. "

Mesa wasn't sure if that made her feel better or not.  Flynn had never been to the Alpha Site before, so what under the sun could the Borg want with her?  Oh, this wasn't good at all.  She frowned slightly.  Okay, that made sense, but who would they ransom Flynn too and for what purpose?  Mesa shuttered a bit.  "That's good at least."  At least she knew her friend wasn't going to become dinner for those monsters.  She pulled her horse up and looked at where Josile was pointing.  "Good Flynn.  She's a spitfire."  She just hoped that Flynn didn't get herself in trouble.

Linde's head whipped around at the scream and saw the huge beasties pulling one of the Marines into the water. She reigned in her mount and slipped off, bringing her rifle into firing position and firing three-round bursts, aiming for the huge eyes, taking care not to hit the poor man being dragged into the water.

Steven, hearing the scream and the shots, pulled up his horse and jumped off and started towards the beast, firing as he ran. He was aiming for the soft body, hoping that pain and shock would induce the critter to give up it's prey and retreat back to where it came from.

"It's all we have for now." The huntress replied quietly, her eyes and every sense attuned to her surroundings. Suddenly her head whipped around, looking due west. The other group were in trouble, the sound of the sea beast's roars made that much obvious, but from where Josile and her small group were, there was little to nothing they could do about it. All they could do was ride on and pray to whatever gods they worshipped that no one was injured. "We'll ride another hour, by that time we should meet with Jordan and her group. As the light fades, you will need to be aware more of your hearing and smell. Anything unusual, tell me immediately." It wasn't as if she wouldn't notice it first; but you can never tell with these things.

The great beast roared in pain, it threw its large head back, opened its black maw and swallowed marine and horse as one, a swirl of blood filled the dark waters as it slipped below the waves. Its eye would heal and it would be back, it had the sent of these miniscule pests now and it was implanted in its memory.

Jordan watched in horror from her vantage point, it was surprisingly quiet now. She said a few words for Maxwell and hung her head. "Worse than that Monroe, much worse." She stood in her saddle and whistled loudly to the rest of her group. "General, don't hang around sir. There's nothing we can do." She said sadly.

Mesa nodded.  She knew until they actually found the Borg they wouldn't know if Flynn was truly alright.  She could be injured, but at least the sign of no blood was a good thing.  She turned her saddle when she heard the shouts, her face paling.  Mesa glanced at Josile, knowing they would never get to their friends in time.  She closed her eyes and bowed her head.  This couldn't be happening.  "Let's go then," she said softly.  There was no time to waste.  She nodded.  "Got it.  Rely on our ears and nose instead of our eyes."  She knew that would be harder then it sounded though.

Satisfied both young women were up to it, Josile pressed onwards, with the trail starting to rise. They were now in the foothillls of the mountains and before they went too much further they would have to make camp for the night. At that point they would rejoin the other group, but for now, while the trail was still fresh, Josile wanted to get as far as they could, while they could. Mesa had to admit, if they weren't trying to find Flynn the forest would actually be pretty.  Although a lot deadlier then the forests she was used to back home.  She turned as Josile dismounted her horse like she had been born to the saddle.  Of course, growing up here she just may have been.  Mesa gently pulled back on the reins of her own mount.  "Whoa," she said softly, but firmly before swinging out of her own saddle.  She walked over to where Josile was knelt, leaving her mount ground tied.  She figured Bella would join them soon.  "What did you find?" she asked.

"See how the prints are wide, if you were not watching, you could miss that. Linde galloped on, getting out of reach of that horrible, vicious creature that had snuffed out the life of a Marine in just a split second. She hoped that they would join up with the other group soon, she felt naked with so few people around. She wondered what her father would think of all this. No doubt he would be astonished, and pleased, that his eldest child was galloping around on an alien planet thousands of light years from Earth. She wondered how he was doing. She knew that he had been recruited to run for the Bundestag after his retirement and that the election was only in a few days. Her mother would be equally fascinated. If she were here she would also be continuing her campaign to get her married off to some suitable man and provide her with her first grandchild. She supposed that she would someday, but that day would have to be soon. She wasn't getting any younger.

Looking up at the now rapidly fading light, Josile arched her back. They would have to wait about four hours before both moons were up, granting them yet more light, albeit a soft glow, with which to travel. The best plan was to rest when they could and travel when it was easier. "Borg move fast, roughly cantering speed of our best horses. Your friend would only slow him down." Josile explained. They were losing light fast and Mesa didn't like it.  she knew they would have to slow up before long as the going got dangerous.  But each minute that passed put them farther away from Flynn.  "Oh," she said in surprise.  "Didn't realize they moved that fast."  No wonder the Borg had chosen to carry Flynn.  There was no way any of them could run that fast.  She shook her head a bit, trying to let that sink in.  These creatures were certainly interesting and something that Mesa had never dealt with before.

"Lead on," Steven said to Jordan. They spurred their horses forward, making for where they would meet Josile and the others. Riding on, they soon caught up with the other group. The light was fading and they had reached the point where they would lose the trail if they kept going in the dark. Steven and Linde dismounted and immediately started rubbing down their horses, making sure that their precious mounts were cared for before anything else. Others were seeing to the making of campfires and cooking a meal. Josile had her people setting up a perimeter. Linde went up to one of the novice riders who was reeling from exhaustion. "Lay down on the ground so I can massage your legs. Josile, do you have any liniment or any other kind of salve? Otherwise those without much experience at distance riding will be suffering tomorrow morning."

*time jump + 30 minutes*

The two groups met up at the appointed time and place, a small alcove nestled under a large overhanging rock, some two hundred metres or so back from the sea shore, just slightly within the tree line. It had started to rain again, only this time for the moment it was light but steady. Two small warming camp fires had been started, just enough to dry clothes and heat some food. Jordan went off to sit by herself, taking it all in, just a couple of hours and already one was lost.

Josile spoke quietly as she dismounted, to both Bella and Mesa. It would seem the younger of the two hadn't really been paying attention, still focused on an earlier event. Not that Josile minded, she was sure Bella had absorbed the second lesson just as well. "I've seen moving pictures of your monkeys young Bella, though these are possibly somehow related, they are carnivores and fill a different niche in our world. They live both in the forests and the plains." She looked purposefully at Mesa. "Do you have creatures in your world, that are more for the want of a better word, scavengers? Those that wait for larger animals to kill the prey?"

While she waited for an answer Linde spoke to her. "Yes I do. In my saddle bags, you will find all you need. Look for the jar with the red top; that will do exactly as you require."

Mesa turned back to mount her horse, knowing they needed to get going.  She was starting to worry greatly for her friend.  "Yes, we do have scavengers," she answered Josile once they met up with the others.  She swung off her horse to take care of the mare while they moved around.  she knew they couldn't get moving again until Josile gave them the okay.  It was too dangerous to go out on your own.

"Thank you," Linde said as she accepted the medicine. She directed the novice riders to lay down and so she could massage their legs. If she didn't, they wouldn't even be able to move in the morning. She had noticed that any number of them were walking stiffly. Then she had them removed their trousers so she could massage the salve into their leg and thigh muscles. She noticed some of them, mostly Americans, were blushing furiously. She shrugged it off.  People sunbathed completely nude in public parks and beaches all the time in Germany. She nodded in approval and saw that some of the more experienced riders were imitating her action. They all had to work together here. She would have to do this again tomorrow morning before they mounted.

Steven quietly checked the perimeter, He liked what he saw. It was obvious that Josile's people had everything well in hand. They were rigging shelters from the rain and had cookfires lit, preparing a hot meal. Others were keeping watch. They were well-hidden, even knowing where they were it was hard for Steven to spot them. He walked over to where Josile was standing, ready to answer an questions she might have.

Jordan's mind was intently going over the events, not only of the last few hours, but the last months, weeks, since she had been here. Everything, from the destruction of their mining sites, to the death of many of her friends had been at the hands of the Borg. Not withstanding the war with the Hozgura, the Borg were responsible for the majority of her problems on this backwater planet. She wasn't going to shed any tears over the number of them she was planning to kill.

"Then you will know then, that they will take opportunities as I suspect those same type of creatures on Earth will want to do." Josile told Mesa quietly, not wishing to alarm any of the other people from Earth. Her world was still a dangerous and wild one, a place not to be taken lightly.

She watched with some amusement at Linde's ministrations to the others and some of the reactions. Her own people were not so ashamed of their bodies, many a time, much to her humour, when some of the base personnel had visited the outlying villages, they had spent time in the sweat tents, totally naked as was the customs. Women, men, children and village elders would all be there laughing hilariously at the discomfort of their Alpha base friends. When Robert approached her she smiled. "I see that your people have yet to overcome their sense of self shame General Caldwell."

Mesa looked at Josile in surprise.  Oh that wasn't good at all.  "Think I'm gonna keep my gun close," she whispered back.  there certainly wouldn't be any sleeping with those types of creatures in the the woods.  Not to mention the Borg themselves.  She did manage to smile a bit though as she watched the others as Linde helped them with their stiff muscles.  They would appreciate it later even if right now they felt embarrassed.

Petty Officer Claudia Monroe (NPC)

Claudia helped some of the locals cook up a hot meal for everyone since she was a cook first and foremost and looked at her fellow officers. She had to laugh at their bashfulness as they got their stiff muscles massaged. She had no shame as far as that was concerned. She came from a long line of massage therapists and was taught not to be ashamed of your body because people were walking around naked for many years long before clothes were invented.

"Well, at least we have some entertainment tonight despite the bad going on."

Steven laughed. "Different cultures, Josile. Linde comes from Europe, where casual nudity on the beaches and public parks in good weather is taken for granted. America, on the other hand, was settled by religious refugees from Europe who wanted religious freedom. Their definition was religious freedom for them and not for others. They were also very prudish and reactionary. Their attitudes rubbed off on many of the others coming over from the old country."

He looked around appreciatively. "This is beautiful country. I grew up on a ranch in Colorado, not far from Colorado Springs. Up in the lower slopes of the Rocky Mountains. It was close to wild country that you could get to in my part of the country. I grew up with horses. Did a lot of hunting and fishing to help keep the family fed. We weren't poor, but we weren't exactly rich, either." He smiled wistfully. "My parents are long gone, now. Nobody lives there full time, but we have a caretaker to look after it, and my sisters and I like to spend holidays there when we can. The house started out small, but as we prospered we kept adding more and more. I am looking forward to getting back into that kitchen again!"

He looked at Josile again. "Do you need any of my people to help stand guard duty? You know the area best, and I don't want my people to get into the way."

Earthern's were talkative, Josile had learned that long ago on first meeting them. Her people went about their lives in stoic silence, except for those times when either debate occurred, a sitting of the council, or feasting and of course bathing. Trying to engage in all three or four of them at a time, was much like village disputes, Josile as leader had to have more than one set of ears. Yet she did well.

"I would yes keep your weapon's close Mesa, not that we should have any difficulties here. My Rangers patrol these woods frequently and will alert us if there be any trouble, no matter what form it should take." She smiled widely at Claudia, giving her a knowing look.

"Your wonderful people, Claudia have provided us with some six years of continuous laughter and joy. I pray that it continues that way." She turned to Steven. "This is true, some of our trading partners through the Ancient ring, have many inhibitions in that way. There is one clan, who dress from head to toe, fully covered, winter or summer. So I do understand."

She listened to him intently as her told of his homeland. Though she had visited Earth twice now, she had not gone beyond the confines of the SGC. "It would indeed be my pleasure to see your beautiful home General. And, I would be grateful if some of your people could stand with mine on guard. We shall only stay four hours, no more. But each and every one of us should be fresh to ride thereafter."

Mesa nodded.  That was good to know at least.  She got back to her feet, her rifle in hand and looked for Jordan.  She was surprised when she finally spotted the other woman.  Jordan seemed a bit off at the moment.  She left Josile with Steven and walked over to Jordan.  "Hey commander," she said gently.  'Everything alright?"  She knew they had all been thrown into quite a mess, but she was thinking there was more to Jordan's attitude then just Flynn's capture.

She was still staring into space when Mesa approached her, Jordan was by now, sitting on a large rock, her face turned towards the North; her mind going over and over her plan of destruction. For a moment she didn't answer and when she did, her voice was as hard as the stone she sat on and colder.

"Twenty two years I've been in the Navy, Major. Twenty two frakking years and I have been in some nasty places before, but.." She paused, turning her head. "...I've never let the enemy get to me. I thought I could get passed that, but not this time." Her hands came up to her face, wiping away invisible tears. "In the next day or so, whatever you see me do, that is beyond regulations, please just look away."

Mesa waited quietly for Jordan to decide if she wanted to answer or not.  Although the answer she got was not what she had been expecting.  Mesa knelt beside the other woman, staring into the woods.  "It's amazing how one thing can get to us and put that crack in our shell that we thought was indestructible."  Mesa nodded with a slight smile.  "I will remember that, but please, if you need to talk, don't be afraid to find me.  It will help take my mind off where Flynn might be at this very moment."

It seemed that they needed to beat quietly and not to make any strong and loud noises.
,,Sure, someone is showing you it? I would think that you would not be interested in seeing anything out of the our country. Why simply you not exterminate them?
Seriously, it might work, simply just get rid of all of those evil animals. Although I'm not sure whether they are evil, they are carnivores, like the dinosaurs. Do you know dinousaury Josile?
They are creatures who lived long ago in our world. They were the first, they were carnivores but also the vegetarians. Maybe these are just a monkey who they were born, and you have to recognize that every living being has to eat. But it would be a paradox indeed, what would happen if they ceased to exist these carnivorous apes? After all...'' Bella said in Mesa, was fascinated by this conservation.
,,We could split up and look around, but I'm not sure whether it was a good idea, it is best to stay together.'' Bella worried about it.

In the short few hours Jordan had known Mesa, she had proved to be a good companion and she had wisdom as well, which was rare these days. "I allowed it to happen Mesa, its all on my head. I won't allow it to happen again. I would rather resign my commission than go through this again." She was still seathing, but a little less so now.

Mesa listened quietly.  She understood how Jordan was feeling.  She felt like it was her fault that Flynn had been captured.  She hadn't known her friend was headed out, but she still should have found someway to stop her.  "Learning from our past mistakes is the best thing, even if the mistakes hurt deeply.  Some are with us the rest of our lives," she said gently.  She liked Jordan and the woman seemed like a good friend.

To have someone volunteer was refreshing, not even her own people would normally stick their necks out like that; sleep to all humans was important, especially coming off a three day ride from the outer holdings. Josile was glad for the offer and accepted it gracefully. "Good, we shall stand together Claudia Monroe. I doubt we will be troubled in that time and two hours on our feet or merely passing the time getting to know one another could be a good thing." She told her. Raising her voice a little she spoke to the whole camp. "Finish your food and get some sleep all of you, we will have a hard ride when we set out again."

"You know what my problem is Mesa?" Jordan said, it wasn't a question. "I care too much, maybe too much for my own good. Its almost got me killed twice. Perhaps if I cared a little less, I wouldn't end up with these long suffering heart aches that eat my soul away." There was something in that, what Mesa said about mistakes, Jordan had made a few, they were wrong choices really, but she had planned to make up for it and very soon. Then she heard Josile's call.

"You'd better get some food and rest. I'm not hungry, but I could use a couple of hours sleep."

Mesa  shook her head.  She knew just what Jordan meant.  "But if we stop caring then we're just a weapon and a robot.  Don't stop caring," she said gently.  "The pain may be great, but in the end everything is worth it."  She looked toward where Josile was standing.  "You may not be hungry, but I'm getting you something anyhow.  You need your strength as much as we do.  I'll be right back."  Mesa got up and went to get them both something to eat before catching some rest.

Jordan found that indeed she was hungry once she had smelled the food the Cavalieros had prepared. A local version of the veritable meatballs, marinated in a rich sauce and accompanied with baked vegetables and camp bread. Mesa had brought enough for them to share and soon after they had finished, the two of them found a comfortable spot right where they ate, about the only place in the camp that the stars could be seen. Although it was warm and humid, from their position facing the sea, a pleasant breeze washed over them and soon sleep found them.

For Claudia and Josile, perhaps the only two who were quite fresh to begin with, they kept watch for three of the four hour rest, only being relieved because one of the older Cavalieros was rather miffed by the fact two women had kept watch over them all, while everyone else rested. He would not have even seen them, but for the fact he had to get up for a pee.

Steven did manage to get what rest he could, leaning against a convenient tree, his head pillowed by pack and his rifle close to hand. Having a hot meal didn't hurt, either. He would have to keep an eye on Jordan, she looked close to losing it. He awoke to a careful hand touching his shoulder lightly. "Time to go?" "Just as soon as we get some more food in us, we'll need the energy," Linde said. Steven took care of some personal needs, then headed over to get in line for chow. He spoke into his minicom. "Caldwell to Sagitta." "Saggitta here, Lieutenant Simpson speaking." "What's the weather report?" Steven asked. "The skies should clear by the end of the day, sir." "Good. As soon as you can start getting some satellite shots and download them to me. Also be looking for some spots where we can land supplies and personnel."

Mesa was glad that Jordan hadn't argued about eating after she had brought the food.  She knew how hard this life could be on people, but she didn't want to see Jordan slide into a dip she couldn't get out of.  The young woman was grateful for a much needed sleep as well as she curled up against her pack, wanting to get an early start, so they could hopefully find Flynn.

It was now 0130 hours, local time, as far as the people from Earth were concerned. The twin moons were now fully up above them and though not quite daylight, more of a bright gloom as opposed to the pitch of dark. Josile was up and about, getting her own few riders up, some were already saddling their mounts. She moved silently over to Steven and Linde. "I mean to move out in twenty of your minutes General Caldwell. Know this, we will be in the high passes within an hour and hopefully before day break, we should have either found your friend, or be at the Borg camp. If that comes to pass, we will see my riders join us from the eastern road. Pray to your God, that we find Flynn first." The last thing Josile wanted was yet another war between her people and the Borg; yet every moment they drew closer to them, that likelihood was becoming inevitable.

Jordan awoke as sullenly as she went to sleep. Her mind was awash with memories of her past, friends who had died, both here and back home and all she could think of was vengeance for all those wrongs. Silently she saddled her horse and arranged her gear, keeping her eyes down lest someone saw her mood. A storm cloud on two legs.

Steven nodded and brought his minicom to his lips. "Caldwell to Saggitta. I need to speak to Lieutenant Larson at once." His listened as the call was relayed to Genevieve's cabin. "Jenny, I need you to lift ship at once. Configure all fighters to air-to-ground mode and launch them as soon as you get high enough." He pressed a button on his com. "I've relayed the location of the Borg camp to you. Fly nap-of-the-earth in stealth mode. I want you just beyond detection range, ready to give us fire support if we need it. Caldwell out." As he strode toward his horse he noticed Jordan and Josile listening as he gave orders. He mounted up and spoke into the device again. "Caldwell to Britannia." "Britannia here." He sent up the location of the Borg camp. "Maintain position over this area. Intercept any craft that lifts from that area if they're not Saggitta's." "Aye, aye, sir."

It was time to move. Josile had everyone in place, she was already mounted allowing her horse to find a new trail out of the camp. Just as she reached the edge of the clearing, she noticed that Jordan appeared to be in somewhat of a mood. That would not bode well if they came to any type of difficulty, not only with the unknown of what or who might be waiting for them, but the terrain as well. She rode over to her, seeing Mesa there as well. "Are you well Jordan O'Niel? If you are still suffering from the tragic loss of your friend, perhaps you should return. The paths ahead will not be kind to you if you mind is not sound." The woman was not exactly being unsympathetic towards the Navy SEAL, she was only making sure everyone was in the same frame of mind for what lay ahead.

"I'm perfectly fine!" Jordan said with just a tinge of anger as she pulled up the saddle strap, then promptly mounted, saying no more. Josile moved out of the way, to go back to the lead. As she passed Mesa she spoke out of the corner of her mouth.

"Mesa, take care of her. If she so much as places one foot wrong, have the General send her back do you understand?" She said. "Jordan could jeopardise the safety of everyone."

Petty Officer Claudia Monroe (NPC)

As she saddled up her horse, Claudia listened to the exchanges being made. She really wasn't an eavesdropper, but sometimes she just couldn't help herself. She didn't know Jordan as well as the others did, she only saw her around base camp since they've been here with no interactions, but she was worried about her since the night before. She did want to offer her Commander some words of encouragement and let her know she was here if she needed to talk or vent, but decided against it at that particular moment after hearing the anger in her voice. So she just finished getting her horse ready and made sure everything was secure then mounted and waited to move out.

Mesa quietly saddled her mare back up.  Thankfully the mare seemed to understand the need to hurry and stood still for her.  Not that the woman hadn't had her share of pacing snorting horses before.  This was a nice change though.  She looked up as Josile walked past her.  "Will do," she promised, glancing toward Jordan.  The other woman still seemed really uptight.

Mesa swung onto the mare's broad back and gently nudged her sides to get her up beside Jordan.  "Ready for day two?" she asked, hoping it wouldn't go on any longer than that/

Steven mounted, looking around to see if anyone else was ready. He exchanged looks with Linde and made a furtive nod in Jordan's direction. They would keep watch and he would send her back immediately if her behavior jeopardized the mission in any way. Hopefully they would catch up with Flynn's abductors soon.

When Josile was satisfied that everyone was mounted and ready to leave, no trace of the camp left as well; (that was something the Cavaleiros were very good at, hiding their passing through any terrain), she moved to the head of the small column, now one less and began the upward climb into the mountains. "Keep a minimum distance of three paces between each of you!" She called, just loud enough for the last rider to hear, and that was Jordan. "Once we are passed these elms, we shall be in the Beech forest and the trail will narrow significantly. I do not need to tell you to be on your guard, some of the canyons we pass are almost a mile deep." She spurred her mount with a deft touch, within several paces, the path started to climb.

Somewhat over her initial moods, Jordan gave both Bella and Mesa and sign that she was okay, with a quick thumbs up. Of course it was a ruse, she had began planning the moment Josile started the next part of their search. She swallowed hard when the Cavaleiros leader mentioned the depth of the passes, Jordan was only an average rider and as tough as she was, that one comment scared the life out of her.

Mesa wasn't sure she believed Jordan's sign that she was alright, but she wasn't going to push the other woman.  She would just keep an eye on her like Josile had asked.  They could use all the help they could get, but it wouldn't be worth another person's life.  She turned her horse and gently nudged the mare's sides.  She grimaced as Josile talked about the canyons.  "Perfect," she mumbled under her breath.  She wasn't a terrible rider, but she certainly wasn't one of the best and the canyons sounded quite dangerous.  "Hang on Flynn," she whispered.  "We're coming."

Bella slept fitfully during the two hours allotted to her; she was so excited to be a part of this little group, going in search of a friend and shipmate. When she was awoken for her turn at watch, she didn't need much shaking at all, one of Josile's men tapped her lightly on the shoulder, but she was already awake, her eyes starring up at the beautiful stars. "Thank you." She said to him softly and in moments she was on her feet, boots back on and her assault rifle across her arms, watching and walking around the camp, listening to the snores and moans of those sleeping.

At the end, Josile called for them all to re-saddle their horses and make ready to leave. Bella saw and took note of Jordan's behaviour, it was unusual for one so senior in her mind, to behave in such a way. Now another pair of eyes would be watching the commander. Once on her horse and the group filed out, she listened to Josile's explanation of what was to follow. Bella swallowed hard, this was not going to be easy.
