Tallellinian Sector: Vanir Home Base
« on: August 18, 2014, 03:52:21 PM »

 Situated in the outer edges of the Tallellinian Sector, this area was more like a mini galaxy within a galaxy with some of the planets as big as suns themselves. The Vanir home world is in fact one of eight moons that rotate about a blue giant known as Elfir, it is 2/3rds the size of Earth and the gravity is about 96% of Earth's so the impact is not felt so much.

 The primary base is located near the upper regions of the moon on a large super island that is more a continent in itself. Moderate in climate except for winters which are harsh and last for nine of the 14 months of one year. The base is sprawled over around 300 square miles of tall spires and structures that in a way mimic much of Atlantis.

<<From Dreadnought>

<Spirit of Liberty>

Rob blinked as they reappeared in a new area. "Cloaking in place now," he said, hitting a sequence of buttons to make sure they weren't able to be detected.  "Ladies and gentlemen, please remained seated as this ride has not come to a complete stop," he said, mimicking the voices he always heard at amusement parks.

<From M35-117>

The jump to hyperspace with the Wildcats had been fairly normal, though Jack and AJ both were reminded of long endurance flights over the Pacific, just without anything to look at but the stars...

"Hobo 1-1, all systems green, nothing on RWR." Jack reported, looking around at the system before them.

"Hobo 1-2, ditto that. Liberty, it's your show, we're just here to smack anyone upside the head who gets out of line." AJ said.

 Blinking lights all green told Alecia that things were....all green, which gave cause for her to smile. "Hobo one and two, Liberty copy. We'll hold here while we do a scan of the place. Our most up to date intel tells us the Vanir are few in number and much of what they do and have is run robotically. So we're likely to come against little to no face to face contact, or at worst a million Genii clones. Major Lorne.." Her eyes were front and center on the planet/moon, the thing was huge but not even a blink compared to the actual giant blue planet that was running this system, almost as big as a small star in itself. "...start a surface sweep, we're looking for any possible large complexes."

 By now she was running through routine check lists, next was the escort's secondary mission. "Hobo, I think at this point your help will be invaluable, we'll need a probe of their defences from all three of us. We have enough EW gear on all three ships to be as good as being cloaked in any case; still these guys are pretty smart we can't deny that...Cadman, Ngyuen, you two aren't just passengers, look in the small locker attached to each side entry door, you'll find in each a pair of high resolution infra red/ night vision binoculars. Those attached to the gimble fitting on the door window so we'll need your mark 1 eyeballs on the job as we make our passes. Maxwell, beside the rear cargo door up back there is a larger locker, open it, you'll find a .50 caliber chain gun that fits into a pressurized port just below either of the rear windows, it has its own sighting mechanism, you can take care of that." Pretty much all tasks assigned now, all they had to do was commit.

 Lastly. "Rob, you'll be flying, I'm going to use my secondary sensors to assist Major Lorne, just so we don't miss anything...are we all ready to rock?"

Maj. Evan Lorne
Lt. Laura Cadman
Sgt. Robert Cheung
Cpl. Doyle Maxwell

"Roger that, Major," Evan said, and he leaned in, fired up the scanners for a sweep.

Maxwell was far too excited at the notion of being a gunner, and he bounced to his feet, headed to the locker to find the .50 cal.

Cadman and Cheung acknowledged Satterfield's orders, heading off to find their equipment and then settling in to be extra eyes.

Evan was tense, knew what the Vanir were capable of, hoped that they really had deserted this place - and that they'd left something behind.

Rob glanced over at Alecia.  Well, it seemed like she had everything in hand and knew just who she wanted to do what.  There was no reason to argue.  It was all very sound logic. "You got it, major," he grinned.  Rob loved flying so he wouldn't argue there at all.

"Liberty, Hobo 1-1. Instead of going hot, which as fun as that might be, the Wildcat upgrades did NOT include a cloaking device, let's try to be more discrete. I was rather clear with the Colonel that we're not doing this for shock and awe." Jack commented with a disapproving tone.

"Hobo 1-2 here. Recommend we stay weapons tight and only go hot if Alpha Romeo Two gets in too deep. Liberty, you can probably be better positioned to track their progress and provide immediate fire support as needed. If needed. Hobo 1, maybe better if we instead take the lead and do overhead flybys first." AJ suggested. She knew Jack was still bitter about losing one of his own during the Genii base assault, only worsened because the tactics used had been fueled by emotion over any operational logic.

"Concur, 1-2. Liberty, we are not here to light up the base, we are here on recon. Alpha Romeo Two is doing the leg work, we are only here to provide cover, and in your case, get them in and get them out. That does not happen if you turn the volume up to 11 and light the place up like Baghdad at midnight during the Gulf War before they're even boots on the ground." Jack added, "Find an LZ, we're going to break atmo and run for terrain masking altitude to do some recon. 1-2, let's go."

Jack banked his fighter towards the surface, with AJ off of his starboard wing going trail. The two fighters easily penetrated the atmosphere and raced for the ground. The two former Hornet pilots pulled up in sync just before they would hit the ground, and their fighters were now only a couple of thousand feet off the ground at this point. They then banked around and started towards the last known location of the Vanir base.

<Spirit Of Liberty>

 The youngest member of the team was still suffering the awe and shock of the 401's take of procedure then the subsequent jump into hyper space. This was effectively her first beyond planet space adventure since she arrived at Atlantis via the gate and had only ever been beyond that in a Puddle Jumper surveying the mainland from orbit. So this was something completely out there for her; despite her initial reaction she was liking it.

 "Copy that Major." Her small voice went over the internal radio as she followed Laura's lead, swinging the mechanism into place over the side door window. The hi-res binoculars fitted into place perfectly and she found she could move them around roughly 30 degrees either side as well as vertically both ways. She played around with the settings for a moment until it was correct for her eyes, focusing on one of the 302's to begin with. She could almost see the stitching on AJ's flight suit. Amazing! Was her best reaction.

 "Recon only Hobo. We follow the Scouts rule book on this one. When and only when we feel we can safely put AR-2 down we will do so after we make that decision jointly." Alecia pushed the 401 down after the two fighters keeping a distance of about three kilometers behind them. "Right people we're going down low and slow, eyes on the ball, we have one chance and one chance only. Any sign of immediate danger, we bug out." She glanced over at Rob, nodding to him. "Hold her steady Rob, center line flat at six hundred knots relative to the surface; we'll keep to ten thousand on the first sweep, then drop to a thousand when we've found a suitable place that looks inviting. We can assume the main area we need to find will most likely be the biggest." She twisted around for a moment. "Evan, keep a watch on the alarm system, as soon as you even see a red glow on the warning panel shout very loudly."

Rob rechecked his headings.  He didn't want to waver even a bit.  At least not until they needed to.  He glanced out the window though, wondering just what they were getting themselves into.  It was a bit eerie if he thought about it.

"Holding steady.  Everything still seems normal," he commented.  Except for the uneasiness in his stomach that was.

Maj. Evan Lorne
Lt. Laura Cadman
Sgt. Robert Cheung
Cpl. Doyle Maxwell

"Roger that, Major." Evan kept an eye on his panel. He glanced at Henschel. "Is it just me, or is it unnaturally quiet down there? Even if they abandoned the place, unless they took the care to shut down every single light and fan as it were, shouldn't one of us see...something? And they'd be fools not to leave security up. Plus they seem kinda spiteful, like they'd leave security up just to mess with whoever comes after them. But it seems awfully...dead. Or maybe cloaked."

Maxwell found the .50 cal and got it set up with quick, steady hands, a bounce in his step.

He reported in to Satterfield and Lorne. "Ready, Major." Two birds, one stone.

Cadman, with Nguyen on her heels, found the goggles and suited up, ready to assist.

She reported in to Satterfield and Lorne. "Ready to get my eyes on the prize, Major."

"Hobo 1-2 here, looks like we've got something at my location." AJ reported, "FLIR is picking up what looks like a concentrated structure partially concealed here. Going to call it a bunker if I had to guess."

From 3,000 feet, the site wouldn't have stuck out to the naked eye. But infrared scans were showing an unusual mass of heat in the middle of nowhere, like an orange blob in a field of purple.

"Anything else out there, 1-2?" Jack asked, checking both his own FLIR scans and visuals, just to be sure there wasn't some kind of weapons emplacement or hidden hostile force waiting to ambush them.

"Negative, 1-1. Matches the site that was found by friendlies back a few years ago, so I'd say we have a winner. Liberty, I'm seeing several good LZ sites nearby, both to beam down and to land." AJ replied, marking the site with an electronic waypoint marker for all to pick up on.

"Confirmed. Liberty, begin your approach. Once you're in position, we'll return to orbit to watch for any activity." Jack said. Something did not feel right about this mission, but he had to figure it was its own paranoia talking, not the actual conditions.

 "Copy that Hobo. We're in the pipe five by five." Satterfield confirmed the marker, then switched the control from Rob's position to hers. "You're in observation mode now Rob, keep an eye out the side for clearance, it'd be a hell of a time to hit something now."

 Bringing the ship down once they had stopped over the target reminded Alecia all too much of the old Star Wars films with Luke flying through the structure of the Death Star; this looked far much like that, the primary difference being this was real. "Hobo, Liberty. LZ confirmed, going down." She initiated the wing fold, which effectively brought up the outer 60% length of the 401's wings to lay across the top. Using the vectoring nozzles she brought Liberty down gently with a firm bump once they had hit a solid surface.

 Twisting in her seat she left the engines on idle, speaking to Lorne. "Give me two minutes to check the atmosphere Major." That would be really dumb if they couldn't breathe here. After that amount of time it was confirmed the atmosphere was breathable, quite good quality in fact. One small issue was gravity, it was around 0.85 of what they were used to. "Confirmed. Don't try anything super athletic though, you're going to be feeling much lighter than expected here."

 "Dayam!" Lou exclaimed. "If I were any lighter I'd disappear into oblivion." She was barely 45 kg's as it was now.

 The whine of the hydraulics was heard clearly as the rear door dropped down. "Major Lorne, you're on." Alecia told him. Then to Rob. "We'll wait until they've found an entry point, then rejoin Hobo. I'd rather be up there, than here like a sitting duck."

"Thank you, Major," Evan said, rising up. He called over his shoulder, "AR-2, suit up, do a comm check, and then let's go." At Nguyen's comment, he added, "Maybe put some stones in your pockets so you can keep your traction when we're out there on the ice, as it were."

It wouldn't hurt to bring extra supplies to an unknown environment.

It was Maxwell who scampered over to another cupboard and found a bunch of extra ammo clips. He distributed them with a cheerful grin. "All for one and one for all."

It was Cheung, who tended to mother-hen his teammates, who made sure they had their extra ammo secured properly in their tac vests and webbing. "Here," he said to Cadman, hands deft on one of the side pockets of her tac vest. "Let me get that for you."

Cadman said, with no small trace of amusement, "Thanks, mom."

Once everyone was ready, Evan had them assemble at the rear hatch.

"AR-2, Major Satterfield, do you copy?" Evan asked.
"I copy, sir," Cadman said. "Ma'am, do you read me?"
"Copy, sir," Cheung said. "Do you read me, ma'am?"
"Check, sir," Maxwell said. "Spirit of Liberty, do you copy?"

Once their radios checked out, the stepped off of the shift. Evan took point, trusted Carman to have their six.

Rob pulled a face, his blue eyes dancing.  "I like a challenge as much as the next guy, but getting my wings torn off is not in the agenda for the day.  I'll play lookout."  He certainly didn't want to see anything happen to anyhow.

Rob glanced back at the others as they prepared to step off the ship.  "Careful out there," he warned them.  "We'll have our ears on." He prayed that things would go smoothly, but one never knew. This planet gave him the creeps if he was honest.

<Spirit Of Liberty>

 The sudden noise of the rear door opening made Lou start, she wasn't expecting things to happen so quickly, she didn't even really feel the landing. Still she was able to recover enough to take a hint from from Lorne enough to go foraging in the arms locker herself; not that she wouldn't be weighed down enough with her pack but you never know. Finding four reasonably heaving frag grenades, she checked to see that the pins were secured firmly, then she clipped them onto her tac vest. "I think these will do fine sir." After that the bigger than Lou pack was hoisted on her back and she fell in behind Robert, turning around to Laura. "All set Lieutenant? You can watch my pretty backside from your position as we hi ho off to work we go." She did the radio thing. "One two, one two radio check."

 Up front despite the seriousness of the situation Alecia could only but chuckle at AR-2's willingness to at least try to lighten things up. She tapped Rob on the back of his gloved hand. "We're going to have to make sure this little circus troupe come back in one piece Rob or we'll loose our entertainment." Pressing the coms button at her throat she replied to all across the one channel. "Liberty radio check. Now get going will you, and radio in when you can as often as you can. We have no idea what we're walked into." She'd give them five minutes to be clear before she lifted off again.

 Out in the open it was cold and Lou pulled her parka closer. Air was good and clean but she was to be truthful shaking in her size 5 boots. Here they were sneaking into an Alien facility to who knows what; yes she was scared, who wouldn't be. She pressed closer to Maxwell for safety if nothing else as Evan led them along a gantry and hopefully a way in.
