"Good," She grunted in almost a parody of monosyllabic drill instructor and she looked pleased about it to. "- because the people of this world and I mean the native peoples are a matriarchal society, they are led by a woman and ruled by women, to the extent that seventy percent of their armed forces are women and girls." A slight pause. "Cross a women here, or insult one and it could end badly. That is not to say their men are weak, far from it as you'll find out in time. One other thing Colonel, though at first sight these people may look as if they're stuck in a time warp as they appear to be right out of one of Earth's earlier periods in history; they're not. They have technology of their own and medicines we need to learn, they simply choose to live in a more mundane way, much as I suspect like where you came from." Lucille was more than aware of Lee's history.

For a moment she went silent, only because she felt he had to see something and in that she retrieved a photo from her drawer. "This was taken by a helmet cam from one of our Marines last year when he inadvertently said the wrong thing. The woman in this photo in the leader of the El Cavaleiros, the Rainha as they call her, Josile Senatal. I thought you'd find it amusing." She pushed the photo over to him.

Donovan reviewed the picture, arching one brow faintly and set it back on the desk without comment.  He'd seen worse, hell he'd trained worse.  Women were as quick to take offense of their status as any men were capable of, that was not news.  What was news, was that the Alpha site was a co-inhabited world.  He was under the impression that the Alpha site was a secret retreat in case of dire emergency on Earth, not a shared world they had to maintain political alliances with.

As she spoke of duties, he inclined his head for her to continue, his expression and posture remaining stoic and silent.

The first and foremost thing Lucille noticed with Lee was his almost steadfast resolve to talk little and while she would expect this of an enlisted person or more junior officer, she did expect senior officers to be slightly more forthcoming. She could though in respect understand Lee in particular considering his background and the unfamiliarity of his venture into the Alpha Site. "Your primary duties are as per standing orders of the SGC for base executive officers, that is essentially you are the commanders right hand. On top of this, you will be required to oversee the day to day running of SG teams and that I might add will be going up a notch as the SGC transits almost fifty percent of team operations through here. You do of course have the responsibility of your own team as noted in my brief." Lucille flicked over pages, going back and forth to highlight in her own mind everything possible he needed to know.

"Protection of this base will be your top priority. Liaison with the local militia in area defense, overseeing any search and rescue missions that may arise. This is due to essentially maintaining good relations with the Cavaleiros; they have a fairly modern fishing fleet thanks to our assistance and in that, boats do at times get into grief, plus the normal SAR missions that may crop up." She sat back thinking of a few other 'smallish' matters. "Base discipline is strictly under your purview Colonel, but you do have a capable commander of the base police and security branch in Major Phillip Finch US Army. One small thing that may come to your attention under this warrant and that is some of the facilities in Foreston, the first being Judy's bar. So long as the woman maintains a reputable establishment, we turn a blind eye to ninety percent of what goes on down there. The second thing is the 'Spartan Fight Club' in the markets, you will see the occasional black eye on your staff; if that is the worst that comes of it, you don't know it exists am I clear on that?" There were good reasons for that and most of those were to do with base morale, that little club has been an ideal venting place for some time now and in that Lucille has made good use of it.

"This is the current Base roster if you'll care to look it over. It will of course be updated when my tenure expires. Some of those assets will be added to shortly I understand." The General pushed over an A4 sheet of paper for the Colonel's own use.

For a moment Donovan looked over the roster file, leaving the A-4 untouched as he burned the information into memory as he did much of anything he read or saw. It was something all but beaten into anyone from where he was, as writing was restricted to the Book for the most part, and it was only by the grace of Tolmen that he knew how to do either himself.

The muscle of his jaw worked briefly as the General gave a brief and obviously condensed synopsis of his new role, once transitions were completed. When she spoke of local militia he stiffened and straightened further, setting the roster back down and fought not to let the frown cross his stoic face, breathing in slowly and letting it out through his nose in almost imperceptible attempt to calm himself.

"With all due respect, Sir, I was told I was being transferred to replace the flagship team for Alpha Site... the base... not the planet it was on, or any indigenous people.  If they were here before Earth set up a base, then they have their own ways of defense that should suffice, and our two forces should not be intermingled.  I understand there are politics involved, but when you mix military protocol with political endeavors, nothing goes straight. They are two rivers needing their own course, and outlet. "

He shook his head slowly, "As you say, my priority is this base and it's protection.  Part of that protection is it's security and safety." He put a finger on the roster file, "These people can be accounted for, their presence tracked, and recorded.  Transit of SG teams through the Ancestral Ring can be monitored and safeguarded... an unknown, outside influenced group of people I have no direct authority over, or any safe way of keeping track of their movements in and out of this base without potential political backfire, is an unacceptable breach of security."

Lowering his hand, he folded it in his lap, back and shoulders straight and face impassive as his tone had been.  While anyone looking or listening to him would assume calm and composed, anyone looking into those flint blue eyes would see the intensity that had put him in the position of leading tens of thousands of warriors in the past.

The General raised an eyebrow at Lee's response to her introduction, it wasn't a very pleased eyebrow at that, she did feel though that she needed to quantify some of points. "First and foremost Colonel the correct address is Ma'am or General, never sir. I've not had a sex change recently and I don't intend to. Secondly, I did say 'area' defence; in other words if and when Foreston or any other of the Cavaleiros' towns and settlements are threatened we have and will continue to offer support and protection for them. Their safety and continued prosperity is to our advantage as I am sure you can understand as we are after all their guests here. The Stargate is still officially their property, we're simply making use of it, though I do see your immediate question as being logical. You have nothing to fear, they rarely have a need to use it and when they do, its generally when one of their conscripts are attached temporarily to one of our SG teams."

There were several other topics Lucille needed to address, though she wished to meet his first concern. "You will in fact be creating the Flag ship team as in the past all SG teams transiting through here have been under the Command of the SGC, but as I indicated earlier that is changing so in effect your team will be the first permanent team to be based here. We envisage at least five teams to begin with." So far most everything had been covered except one small detail.

"Last but not least, the mining operation here. It runs itself essentially without our interference and they do have their own security set up. If they're in trouble, they'll call you. I think that is about all for now, there may be other smaller details which I am sure you'll get up to speed on as time passes."

He mentally sighed a moment.  Outwardly, all he did was blink slowly, and when she was done speaking he stood and inclined his head and partially his upper body in a gesture that closely resembled when Jaffa bowed to one another, his eyes no longer on her, but on the far wall behind her as he straightened.

"If there's nothing else, General, I need to establish my own registration, and rest before Colonel Davis arrives for debrief." It was becoming clear why he and his team were assigned here, even though she'd said he'd been hand picked from a short list for specific reasons, said reasons were not specified unless he'd missed something.  In either case it didn't matter, he was here, and he'd do his job.  He stood at attention ignoring the fatigue from the Hong Kong mission still fresh on his mind, and waited dismissal or further dress down.

She could see the look on the man's face, a look she had seen all too often over the last three and half years and here she was only an hour or so ago trying to impress upon Jaworski and McFearson that she had changed somewhat. Still the old Tigeress was around every now and then to assert her authority, but it never hurt to ease off a little. "You'll do well Donovan, I've read your file inside out and back to front." Her use of the familiar was necessary, she'd learned from the best in both Landry and O'Neill, some days you have to put the cast iron in the cupboard and lock it away for a while. "I'll see you again shortly, but yes for now go and do what you need to do. Unfortunately Commander O'Neil won't be back until tomorrow sometimes, she's presently conducting a training exercise on the gun range. What I will do is find one of our old hands to show you around." That would either be Ovrachenko or MacGregor, possibly both of them; something to keep them busy.

The change in tone and tact wasn't lost on him, letting him know his face and composure wasn't as blank as he'd thought.  Something to work on.  He wasn't sure what to make of her commentary of reading his file so thoroughly, slang euphemisms sometimes got past his comprehension even after all this time. When she mentioned being escorted, he debated putting it off, but thought better of it.  Compliance served better.

"As you wish General." Again the slight dip and incline of head and upper body, and then straightening, waiting for her to call said escorts or send him where he would find them.

"I'll see who's free at the moment to show you around, being Sunday we only have duty personnel on the base with a few visiting from the Dreadnought. Give me a moment." As she spoke Lucille did two things, one she went through the attendance roster and secondly she was scrolling through the CCTV video feeds. In doing that she saw Hughes, Ovcharenko and Commander Wettin heading back in from topside. She also noticed Annie Horowitz walking back to her office from the ladies room on that level, so it was a coin toss. While the first two were no longer base staff, they did know the Alpha site better than most and it was highly probable they knew places even Lucille wasn't aware of, despite her three years plus in being here; as well they both looked a little bored, so her coin toss went one way. "I have two for you." That was more or less a spoken thought as she leaned forward to press the base PA switch on her console.

"Lieutenant Colonel Ovcharenko and Squadron Leader Hughes to the CO's office STAT." She realised earlier she had still been referring to Catherine by her maiden name, somethings were hard to change. "While we wait for them Colonel, do you have any questions?"

Donovan remained standing a moment as she used the PA to call in people.  He didn't know or recognize either name, but then again, he didn't really interact with anyone he wasn't assigned to do so with.  All the better to avoid potential pitfalls with social quirks he didn't understand.

When she asked if he had questions, he shook his head faintly, and folded hands behind his back, moving from attention to at ease with a practiced fluidity, as well as taking a half step back from the chair to move out of the line of sight of the doorway.

<<From gate room>>

Being who and what she was, the ever ready runner, Cate was first to arrive ahead of her CO. As she approached the partially open door of General Chalmers, she could detect or smell another presence close by. Opening the door slowly, Cate only let her dark maned head in just enough for the general to see her and for Cate to see who was standing there; she was pleasantly surprised to see the ex Ori Lieutenant Colonel Lee. "You wanted to see me ma'am?" Cate wondered what it could be about, with him there, had she done something wrong? Her eyes drifted to his still form just for a moment only, then back to Chalmers.

<<From Gate Room>>

Colonel Ovcharenko was right on Cate's heels. She indeed preferred not to run if she could, but if there was a need, she still could prove that the Russian Officer Corps is still up to a physical contest or two. Elena flew up the stairs leading from the Gate Room to the Chalmer's office, skipping two-three steps a time, and came to a grinding halt right next to her XO. Lena's look got a little suspicious as she noticed that Catherine, very unusual for her, is not bursting in the room but peeks through the door. Lena stood beside her, and waited, also securing eye contact with Chalmers.

The base CO stood from her desk upon Hughes and shortly after, Ovrachenko's arrival, she walked the few paces to stand near Lee, her face not giving a hint of what she expected of them and nor should she. "Not specifically Catherine. Lieutenant Colonel Elena Ovcharenko, Squadron Leader Catherine Hughes, this gentleman is Commander O'Neil's replacement. Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Lee, these two are perhaps the best guides you can of the base given the day and circumstances." She took a step or two back, for no other reason than to create a little more space. "He needs his base registration completed, his cabin allocation and a general tour of the base which I am sure you are both more than capable of." There was no requirement on her part to elaborate further, between all three they could work it out. "That will be all thank you."

Cobalt eyes settled on the first head to pop through, hands still loosely clasped behind him, otherwise still and silent as when he'd moved.  When the general made introductions, his head and most of his upper body shifted forward in that slight bow/salute.  There was something about the first woman, Catherine she'd been called, that made him pause just a moment.  A familiar sense, and one he hadn't thought he could or would notice this side of the galaxy, but he dismissed it as soon as he thought he'd felt it.

Instead, when the general dismissed him summarily, he inclined his head in silent farewell, and turned his attention to his latest assignment; making it through this first impression.

He stepped quietly out into the hall, facing the two.  His first impression of both was almost exact opposites, but his expression and body language revealed nothing.  His face was composed in a serene if stoic masque, and he did what he did best...Stand and stare with that odd intensity he managed to do.

The dark haired woman with the streak of white backed out the very instant Chalmers dismissed them, she said nothing, Cate had nothing to say and even though she knew that the General was well aware she was supposed to be dead, it was something of a let down in that she said nothing to see an apparent ghost standing there before her. Cate had heard Chalmers had mellowed, but the fact was to her she couldn't tell the difference between her attitude now and that of three years ago when she sent the 'gang' packing to all corners of Stargate Command.

Back in the hallway outside was a completely different matter, her blue green eyes met those cobalt blue eyes; she knew exactly who he was and where he came from, that at least was no secret. Yet he looked at her as if he knew her, even though she couldn't ever recall passing him in the SGC or anywhere else...that familiarity lingered though. "Cate." She said abruptly holding out her right hand. "Your appearance matters not," She said, "Only the truth of spirit in your heart." Why she said that and why she said it in his own language escaped her, the words simply sprang from her mouth. "I'm sorry, I have no idea sometimes lately what I'm saying." The apology was sincere and so was the blush on her cheeks.
