Polar Day Question
« on: February 26, 2017, 06:13:18 AM »

Okay, folks, creativity time. Here's the boundary conditions of our new problem:

  • We have been suddenly translocated beyond the polar circle, and in the other time as well - we know the latter for certain, but we have absolutely no idea about the exact date and time we are now in.
  • The Sol would not go down beyond the horizon in 24 hours, ergo it is the Polar Day.
  • We can distinguish some mountains or mountain ranges in distance on the horizon, no matter where exactly. It still is ambiguous because Antarctica has loads of mountain ranges, and beyond the Northern Polar Circle we have Cordillera, Uralus, Siberian mountain ranges, Far East mountain ranges, Scandinavia, Iceland and even Greenland with mountains or at least the mountain looking highlands. Thus we can not use that fact to pick between Arctic and Antarctic.
  • Due to the item 1 on the list, our knowledge of the day from which the trip occured is useless - we have no idea what date it is now, thus we cannot pick between Arctic and Antarctic based on the polar day event in its own.
  • Due to the item 2 on the list, we cannot see the stars on the sky to immediately distinguish between the hemispheres of the Earth, nor we have a telescope to look at the sky to see some even during the day time.
  • We have no clock on us, nor compass, cannot use them to figure out the hemisphere by watching the sun move from lowest to highest point on the sky relative to the magnetic poles, taking note of the time when it hits zenith and nadir, and make a decision from that.
  • Finally, we're just in the middle of an ice wasteland. We have no bloody idea where the shore could be, so we cannot just go there and look if there's a penguin or a polar bear fishing in the ocean.

Question to the public: how in the hell can we tell now, where are we, Arctica or Antarctica?

What is the meaning of these questions?
You would probably be dead before you had time to worry about where you were in the world lol.

Regardless there are notable differences between the two.. however I am a bit confused as to what you are specifically asking for is the question of arctic or Antarctic your only question?

Whether I'd be dead or not is completely irrelevant. Suppose I have fur clothes, fire and food, so I will survive.

The only thing I ask is where am I, North or South?

And no, Red, no auroras during the day time unless I went in space, which I did not.

Still best to know, is it north or south - very different ice ages. Besides, entire Earth was iced only once or twice, in Pleistocene there were tropical rainforests and lush rivers and deserts untouched >:D

Easy, do you find Santa's workshop or a science research base?

Jules, like I've said, the question of clothing, food and what not is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the question of the sides of the world.

Troy, like hell it's gonna help - there bases up north too.

I could probably deduce from the highest and lowest points of the Sun on the horizon the location of the south-north line, but without the compass it is impossible to say where exactly is which, alas...

I don't think it would particularly matter in this instance. Eventually you'll hit the coast where animals thrive so you can keep up food stocks. Follow the coast and you'll eventually hit a human facility of some kind if the elements haven't killed you yet.
