"...what are you, 16? Or just that insecure? Wow." James said to Brooke's comment as he pulled open his pack and pulled out the Hardbook, booting it up as the plane touched down and began taxiing to the cargo terminal. He then keyed up the earpiece radio. "Chris, buddy, you ain't the only one who saw combat. This is not my first rodeo by any stretch. Gabby, fine, you can go north."

The personnel at the cargo terminal were all paid off to not ask questions or even look inside the arriving aircraft. A small group of airport security personnel, armed with AKS-74s, were also handy to keep away prying eyes. They also did not stop the cars as they drove out, instead just directing them to the back service gate where another trio of guards who were currently on their side waved them through.

James busied himself with pulling up realtime overhead feeds, pirated off of a couple CIA spy satellites overhead for a while. All of the cars had tracking devices, this would make life very easy to track progress, but it was going to be a little work on their part to locating the target vehicles.

With her hand on the overhead railing, Ash held on as the plane touched down. The rear loading door started to open at one point before as Brooke muttered something about parachuting out of the plane. Personally, Ash would have liked to but at this point, she sided with her. They're not parachuting out at this point.

The opened as Ash released the railing to walk forward to take in the Russian air. It was almost familiar, but it had been awhile. Still far from home, the daughter of de Jaager realized there were far more important objectives to do here. Turning her head slightly behind her, she turned to the group. They were still unfamiliar with each other, which made Brooke's comment to James understandable. With a sigh, she shook her head and responded to counteract James' comment, "Okay. Settle down. We're all unfamiliar with each other. Let's remember that. This mission.".

Looking down, she took out the Beretta from her holster and checked her side arm over. Making sure the safety was on, she removed the magazine checking to see if it was full. Putting it back in, she placed it into her holster and continued, "From what I hear. It's important, so let's just focus on our objectives. Trust that we have each other's back. I don't know about you, but I'm about to make them think twice about crossing my path,"

Looking at Gabby, she nodded, "Like he said. We'll take the north. And anyone who crosses us will pay."

"I'll give you a lesson in Aussie humor some other day." One of many apparently for Brooke, don't put your mouth into gear while your brain is in neutral; a very wise old adage her old man so often quoted. Quite soon after they sorted out who was going where so it was Gabby and Ash with Tom as back up going North with James and herself heading south with Chris as their guardian angel. Once out of the AN-25 and into the streets their immediate destination was a an old trucking garage on the edge of Volzhskiy that had been set aside for their use while they were here. A last minute check of weapons and vehicles with a tyre change for all four cars, going to a all terrain type or at least one that was suitable for the cars without hindering their performance in any great way.

Just outside Volzhskiy soon after they left the garage the two teams made their split, one last radio check and a final satellite check and they were on their way. According to Alice the convoy was traveling at around 60 kmh, or roughly 40 mph. They would have to slow down once they hit dirt but for now both groups had the luxury of around maybe 80 kilometers or so of bitumen to cover and they had a twenty minute head start on them. "We'll see you hopefully at way before the border guys and good luck." Basically that meant whoever managed to finish their mission first had the pleasure of traveling either north or south in between the two main roads, a real cross country challenge.

The harnesses were set, strapped across the bonnet (hood) with a clip, all the rider had to do once he was standing or at least in a kneeling position was to unfasten the clip and use the two ends of the harness to steady themselves. They had practiced it at almost 100 mph so they knew it was safe and would work. "I can't see them yet. How far have we come?" Brooke was not quite yelling but almost as the combined noise from the tyres and engine made normal speaking difficult. Chris would have heard her as well over the radio, so he hopefully was checking the satnav as they tore along the road. Ahead there appeared to be a dust cloud, that was most likely the end of the sealed road.

In response to James' comment, Chris had shrugged in mild indifference, a ghost of a smirk on his face as it was the closest he would come to apologising. Though it was soon that they were revving their engines and driving out of the back of the cargo plane, to Chris' relief that they hadn't blown up mid-flight. He had been taught the art of remaining in a small group of cars, not too close and not so far apart that they were burning fuel to catch back up. Chris was quick to pick up on the fact that he was playing overwatch to the duo of Brooke and James.

He had his pistol on him, concealed by his leg against the door and the other in the glove compartment should he find himself in dire need of duel-wielding or, worse case scenario, out of ammo on his primary pistol. There was also the art of multitasking with the satnav and driving along a road trying to keep eyes on. He pressed a finger to further block out the sounds over the comm as he deciphered what Brooke had asked.

"No eyes on yet. Anyone else, Brooke, Jim, you seeing the dust cloud ahead? Or is my windscreen fogging up?"

Gabby rolled her eyes.   Apparently not everyone had a sense of humor.  She was quite grateful to have Ash instead of James.  James was a good leader but it seemed way too easy to tick off.  Of course she didn't really know him or the others well enough to pass any judgment.   And her father had always told her not to judge.

She grinned at Ash and Tom.  Okay yes the mission was very serious but at the same time getting to drive her car cross country was always a good thing.  "Careful out there, " she said to the other team.  "And see you soon."

Gabby headed her car north.  Now they would need to keep their eyes open.  "Anything?" She asked her team as she looked around.

<Northern Road>

All this for the old red, white and blue, freedom, liberty and all that. Then again Tom could be enjoying a nice retirement on some remote Pacific island if he had wanted to and what? Total, complete boredom after he'd landed one or three Marlin, or wiped himself out on some tropical brew. No even at his age he craved excitement and what they were getting into now was right up his tree it had to be said.

With Gabby's car in front of him, he kept a reasonable distance to enable him to see ahead of them. After the split with the other team he kept his radio quiet to the only absolute necessary messages; he didn't have too much faith in the supposed secure channels they were given. Passing through Maksima was uneventful, a patrolling Russian police vehicle, much to Tom's surprise being a Chevy Silverado, even escorted them to the outskirts of the town and then it was on to Put'll'cha. He was still boggled as to how that was pronounced.

This town saw a marked difference from earlier passings; the people for one showed more of a Islamic influence and it didn't take too much wisdom to notice the unpleasant looks the cars received as they drove sedately through. The local speed signs showing a passive forty kmh limit. As they cleared the last of the ramshackle houses the road ahead became clearer, albeit the hard bitumen and concreted surface soon dwindled to packed sand and stone. "Heads up Gabby, push it out a bit now girl. Nothing on visual but I am checking our satellite feeds and I think our target might be about seven miles or so ahead of us. There appears to be five vehicles traveling at around thirty to thirty five miles an hour heading east."

<Southern Road>

"Alright people, show time." James said as the vehicles were closing into view. He pulled on his plate carrier over his shirt, and then pulled the MPX out of his pack. This he racked with the AR-style bolt handle, flicked the safety into place and secured over his back before climbing out the window.

The vehicle up ahead was a Kamaz, a common vehicle in the Russian Army so it would not attract much notice. What he wasn't expecting were the GAZ Tigr truck in the middle of the convoy, armed with a Kord 12.7mm HMG. That would be a problem as he grabbed one of the straps. The flap of the rear Kamaz's cargo area flipped open, and a soldier in khaki combat fatigues and a black balaclava stuck out a customized AKM that he was bringing to shoulder.

James wrapped his left hand around the strap for better stability, before using his right to pull up his Glock 34. The AK let out a familiar chatter, bullets zipping past him or flattening harmlessly against Brooke's car. He brought his pistol up in a modified one handed grip version of his usual shooting stance, the pistol was at an angle and closer to him for better recoil control, and then fired several shots. One finally found its mark, and the mercenary's head snapped back as his body fell into the truck.

"Get me closer. Before more come out." James urged. As soon as she did so, James released his grip on the strap, holstered his Glock, and jumped up onto the back, rolling over the tailgate and into the compartment. A mercenary shouted at him in Farsi as he jammed the custom muzzle brake of his AKM in James' face. James pulled the barrel away, kicked the soldier's left leg, and then pulled the soldier on top of him. He rolled to the side, drew his Glock, and began firing. AKs and pistols, CZ-75 P07s, responded, but the bullets were striking their compatriot or his vest. James's fire was much more accurate, and after one final bullet to put his shield out of his misery, James reloaded and saw he was clear.

Northern Road

They had practiced a lot before the mission, so Ash felt like she was ready to do this. Being strapped to the hood of the car seemed easy till you start climbing out the window and clinging to the car going a hundred miles per hour. With so much wind pressure against you, you'd have to be sturdy enough to fight against it.

Geared up and ready, Ash placed herself near the window of the car. Looking ahead of them as she listened to the radio, she squinted till she saw the fine lines of the objects coming over the horizon. The car seemed to be going fast enough as she spoke, "I'm ready to do this. Just let me know when. Keep her steady, Gabby."

<South Road>>

That's one. The moment James landed, Brooke waited for a few seconds to see that he was okay, even if he was getting shot at from her position there was very little she could do. He was okay and that was all that counted right now, so she tapped the brake pedal quickly to bleed off some speed then pulled sharply to the left (her car being RH drive), accelerating hard she sped past that last in line truck while looking at the blackened marks that were left imprinted on the bonnet of the Monaro; close, so damned close: one of her wiper blades was missing.

When she drew near the front of that last vehicle, she wasn't expecting what she saw next. A type of IMV with a frigging gunner on top and what looked like a 12.7mm MG. The Gunner's eyes were elsewhere though, off to his own left as he watched what was going down in Jame's truck possibly waiting for his moment to pick her partner off. Damn that was an irritation! While driving there were very few choices open to her except one; do a very very insane thing, that being holding the wheel with her knees as she reached for the ACR, flicking it over her shoulder first. Grabbing the wheel again as she tried to match speed with the last truck, she flicked the safety off to auto. Holding the wheel again with her knees she sped up a little to just barely in front, her heart beating faster and faster as the last thing she needed now was for the driver of that truck to see her. Luck held out as she drew the weapon up and out of the window, sweat now pouring off her as this was not going to be aiming with precision, there was no way she could sight her target. Squeezing off a quick burst she hit the armor shield protecting the gunner. That drew his attention to her as he swung in her direction; Brooke's heart almost stopped as her eyes met his. She fired again, her rounds hitting him in the neck; he fell forward as she dropped the weapon onto the passenger seat, grabbed the wheel again to speed forward to the front of the five truck convoy. "James you're clear. IMV gunner scratched, I'm heading for the lead truck." She told him over the radio then answered Chris. "We've got em Chris. James has mounted the last in line, I'm moving up. Pull in to cover him from his rear. Steeler out."

<<South Road>>

Chris went about unholstering his Glock 17 when the vehicles came into view, lowering the window as he saw the rear flip open on the Russian vehicle and a figure with an AK popping their head out the side. He had fired off a couple shots, but it seemed James had managed it on his own. It was the driving that he needed to focus on, as he glanced at his dash before they went back to the vehicle that they were following.

"Roge, moving into position now." Chris replied, drifting over so that he was more capable of covering James from the rear. He placed his pistol in the side pocket of his car. "How's it looking in there, James?"

<<North Road>>

Gabby kept her car headed straight.  The territory was certainly boring to look at, but it also made it easier to catch sight of their target.  She tried not to draw attention to themselves though as they passed through a couple tiny towns.

"Got it, Tom.  Nice and steady. " A grin crossed her face as she pressed her boot to the floor.  The car rumbled under her.  Now this was going to be good.  She kept the car straight and steady though.   "Almost there. "

Gabby soon saw the cars Tom had mentioned.  They were moving fast.  There was no doubt there.  "Just about there, Ash.  Get ready. And be careful."

Expect the unexpected, that was Tom's motto for life and the enemy they faced decided to deliver that right there and then when he checked his laptop screen and the satellite feed. Three small blips coming at them fast due north about a kilometer away. Too small for cars, Tom felt he had to check it out. His problem was, even with the off road tyres and the slight spring lift to his car, was the Nissan capable of handling the dirt? He was wishing he had of opted for the big Chrysler right now, so he was about to find out the hard way.

"Gabby, Ash, go for it. I have three contacts due north and I need to check it out. I'll be as quick as I can." Dropping back a gear he swung off the hardened dirt road to his left with the car bouncing to an almost airborne state the moment his wheels hit a slight rise in the undulating surface. The first two hundred meters or so were similar to the road itself but then it changed rapidly to a very rough typical red desert flat, rock strewn ground. He could hear and feel the change with the sound of something like a machine gun going off beneath the car as stones pelted the belly of the Nissan, a large dust cloud swirled up behind him. If he wasn't a feature on the landscape before he certainly was now.

Spotting his 'blips' a minute or so later he could see exactly what they were, large dirt bikes of the type used in the Dakar Rallies. From where he was they appeared to be possibly Suzuki 650 XT's, all three had pillion passengers and all passengers were holding what he felt were Uzi's. That was going to be a disaster for them all if he didn't do something about it.
