< Waiting area >

Tim looked up when the footsteps stop in front of him and his gaze followed the pant legs of a flight suit until he met Mike’s concerned eyes.
Mike help out a mug of steaming coffee towards him, “Hint of milk and no sugar, right?”
Tim accepted the mug with a quiet, “Yeah, thanks,” pulled in the scent of it and then took a small sip of the hot beverage.
A small groan escaped Mike as he slowly sat down in the arm chair apposite the medic. “What’s up? You look like something the dog dragged in…”
Tim remained silent for another minute before replying, “Says the man who looks like he’s gone two rounds with Tyson. Have you looked yourself in a mirror lately Mike?”
“Nice shade of purple, right?” Mike said as he touched the left side of his face, “It was a zombie, but who am I to tell the difference?” He took a sip of his black coffee and made a motion with his chin towards the SF. “So what’s with the body guard?”
Tim raised a brow at the mention of a zombie, but kept quiet nonetheless.
“Tim?”
The man remained silent for a while and leaned back in the arm chair before replying, “It’s escort service from the Gate room. I finally got on a team the other day, SG-9, and from the looks of things our second mission went just as FUBAR as it possibly could. Kidnapping, imprisonment by another race and a daring escape, but still just crap in the end! But what else to expect with no intel and a team with a rookie and Bionic woman on steroids. If I’d at least had know about her, this mission might have ended differently.”
Tim looked down on the mug resting between his hands in his lap. “I just don’t get it, why didn’t they let us know about her?” he said quietly.
Mike replied just as quietly, “I take it you’ve been introduced to Airman Heckman?”
“You knew about her, didn’t you?"
“Yeah”
“All the time?”
“Yes, from the very beginning. Ever since her Meidvac from the Hammond.”
Tim nodded slowly, “Great! Seems like everybody knew about this except the folks she was supposed to work with.”
“You’ve been doing this longer than I have Foster. You know the big brass never tells us everything. ” Mike continued in the same low voice as before.
“But if I had known… Maybe I could have…”
Mike held up a hand, “Tim. Stop it. What’s done is one, ok? It’s not going to help you beating yourself up like this.”

Tim put down the mug on the table and rubbed his dirty face a couple of times before looking back at Mike.
“How long have you known Captain Hughes? You’re pretty close aren’t you?”
Mike nodded, puzzled about the sudden change of subject. “Sort of. We’ve know each other for a while. We go back to when I was stationed on the Alpha site a couple of years ago. Why?”
“He was my CO up until today.” Tim took a deep breath before going on, “I saw his ship get blown in to pieces today Mike. I’m so sorry, but he didn’t make it back home. He’s gone.”
Mike stared back at the man opposite him for a good 10 seconds before the meaning of Tim’s words had sunken in and he slowly shook his head and closed his eyes. He slumped back in the arm chair with a quiet, “Oh crap...”
“Yeah, so now you know why I blame my self like do…” Tim whispered.

<Nurse's Station>

He gave her a smile.  "I will be as quick as I possibly can."  He didn't want to be away from Bonnie.  They did have a lot to talk about.  His blue eyes widened at her words and he glanced at Taylor.  He wouldn't want to make Bonnie mad.  He nodded. "Got it."  Bryan headed down the hall toward the room she had gestured to.  He was not looking forward to this.

<<From Colorado Springs Via Air Force Ambulance>>

<Triage>
 Two hours ago Kim was watching her daughter do some routines in their walking yard, a few small jumps had been set up to suit her age group, none higher than four poles and a couple of small fences. It had been going quite well until a siren in the distance had spooked Sophie's little pony, she balked at a two pole jump throwing the girl over the top to land some distance away in a small crumpled ball. Even though she had been taught to anticipate such a fall, it happened so quickly Sophie never had a chance to react, with her only barely protecting her head as she tumbled over.

 Luckily for the plucky eight year old, her helmet did a pretty good job of saving her from any serious head injury, although she was knocked unconscious from the fall. Her biggest problem and Kim’s biggest worry was the broken ulna and radius just above the wrist on her right arm. It was bent in such a peculiar angle Kim knew immediately she had suffered some major damage; the small piece of bone protruding only added to her confirmation.

 With a security blanket hanging over all Air Force personnel of late due to some leftist groups targeting them both personally in the open, on social media  and even physically, over some incident that happened in the Middle East a few months earlier; it was decided over a quick phone call to Anne MacGregor to bring Sophie into the SGC directly.

 The instant the gurney carrying the little girl came into Med Bay, Kim rounded up the first nurse she saw, who just happened to be Taylor as it was her afternoon shift. She’d been informed by the Air Force paramedics who had attended to the scene so she was pre-prepared to an extent; but not for an over wrought panicky mother who despite knowing the drill, couldn’t hide her emotions.

“Where’s Anne? I called her a while ago.” The lines on her face made her look haggard, not at all like the CNO everyone was used to, always smiling for everyone.

  Taylor went straight to the gurney, telling to orderlies to move Sophie into pre-op immediately then she went to Kim placing her hands on the taller woman’s shoulders. “She’ll be here shortly Kim, don’t worry. Look just go and wait in the lounge and we’ll take care of Sophie for you, you know she’s in good hands.”

 Kim was having none of it, shaking her head before replying. “Yes she will be, mine. I’m going to scrub up and be there with her.”

 “Um, no Major. You know policy, she’s family and we’re not to be involved. You can watch from the clean room, but I’m sorry you know Anne won’t allow it.”

 Knowing she was defeated before she even began, Kim slumped in the nearest chair with her head down. Taylor put a comforting arm around her. “She’ll be fine, she takes after her mom doesn’t she? A tough as nails.”

<<Princess Ríoghnach Aoibhell, Keltic Ambassador to Earth, NPC>>

<<AVM Linda Fraser, Commander, SGC>>

"Thank Her Majesty for reining in her hotheads," Linda told Ríoghnach as they followed Anne to the entrance to the Medical Unit. "What some of them wanted to do would have started World War III in a heartbeat."

<<From Commander's Office>

"Thank heaven's for sane wiser older heads Linda. I swear that girl gave me all the grey hairs I'm sporting today." She looked intensely over her glasses at her two companions. "Surely it is supposed to be our male offspring who cause that?" That was how it should be at least in her mind, it was the way life turned, the boys cause you grief, the girls give you joy.

Three steps into med bay, Anne was right into it. "Linda would you sit with Kimberly for a moment while I see what we have with her daughter." She sped passed her CNO with a touch to her shoulder. "Sophie will be well lass, try to think of how happy she'll be to have a nice new pink cast on her arm for her friends to sign." Stargate command's chief surgeon had implemented coloured casts for kids way back in her early days at home in Sydney, it had caught on and she was pleasantly surprised to see it being used here in the US when she first arrived.

Her steps then took her to the gurney, she looked down on little Sophie, feeling first her arm very gently, then the bump on her head. At least her vitals were good, that was a start. "Taylor, prep her for a cranial CT scan just to be sure. I'll see who is on our roster today to assist."

 "Thank god you're here Anne." Kim looked up at her boss for just a second, wiping away a stray tear. She knew the moment Anne arrived her baby would be safe and in the best hands that ever held a MD degree. While she knew Anne never sang of her own achievements, everyone knew that if she was taking care of them or a loved one, no better care could be found.

"Yes ma'am." Taylor responded with her typical no nonsense military precision, while giving a cursory glance to the new CO and an obvious guest or observer. As Anne directed Linda to comfort Kim, Taylor spoke to the other woman. "Excuse me ma'am, would you mind assisting me with getting Sophie into radiology." She didn't want to take the orderlies being mindful that they'd be undressing the girl once they were inside.

<<Princess Ríoghnach Aoibhell, Keltic Ambassador to Earth, NPC>>

<<AVM Linda Fraser, Commander, SGC>>

Linda led Kim to a seat and sat down beside her, giving her a quick hug. "She'll be fine. My son did the same thing at that age," she said quietly. "He was the most popular boy in the school showing off his blue cast. And his twin sister fell out of a tree. She had a pink cast."

"Of course," Ríoghnach said as she moved to assist. At her six and a half foot height the small girl was no burden at all. "I am Doctor Aoibhell."

<Pre-op>

While the others went about their business getting things organized, Anne was frantically on the phone trying to find an anaesthetist to assist her. She had tried the logical names on her list, most of those drawn from the Academy hospital, but so far she had come up blank with the two regulars both attending cases there and the third on leave. She may well have to go back and ask Kim herself who else was attending but she'd put that off for as long as possible while she continued her search.

<Nurses Station>

 Grateful for the human contact, Kim leaned into Linda's shoulder as if she were her own mother. She took deep comfort in that one small human act of kindness. Slowly sucking back the sobs she began to speak. "I'm not overly worried about her popularity, she has that in spades, too much of it in fact. What I am concerned about ma'am are the talking heads; you know those women at the PTA who wrap their kids in cotton wool, not allowing them to be kids then condemning you as a bad mother because for the simple act of nature that your own kid was being herself in getting a broken arm." Those people were also the most vindictive types, Kim avoided going to the school meetings with as many excuses as she could muster, most often having her own mother take care of those duties. She sat up straight composing herself. "I simply won't have those b*tchy women telling me something I don't need to hear; they have no idea at all the life we live through the Stargate program and how hard it is to be a 'normal' parent do they?"

<Radiology>

"Very pleased to meet you Doctor Aoibhell, I'm Lieutenant Taylor Kubowlski USN, assistant trauma nurse here at the SGC." All that while slipping off Sophie's clothing as gently as she could possibly manage. A clean ward robe quickly replaced those garments so she could allow Aoibhell to let the girl down again. Keeping up a little chatter while working helped both of them, as medical staff the world over and indeed the galaxy over as she had found, were keen to bond with one another 'on the job'. "Your name ma'am, its Celtic isn't it?" She reached over to turn the C-T scanner on, the hum of the machine a comforting sound.

<<Princess Ríoghnach Aoibhell, Keltic Ambassador to Earth, NPC>>

<<AVM Linda Fraser, Commander, SGC>>

"Oh believe me, dear" Linda said, "they are no different on the other side of the pond. When I was a young divorced mother with two small children and a military career I was constantly berated and sneered at for not being a proper mum. Especially when I let my two go out and play in the dirt and climb trees and ride horses and get muddy like we used to do at that age. Then there were those who got their knickers in a twist because I sent the twins to regular schools and had them associate with regular kids their age. Their children were too good to associate with the common, or so I was told. My response to that was extremely rude, I'm afraid."

"Yes, it is," Ríoghnach answered. "My first name is Ríoghnach."

{Doctor Sarah Edelstein} NPC
<<From the cafeteria>>

Sarah had gotten the call while she was in the middle of a bowl of cereal in the cafeteria and now said bowl had wheaty o's going soft in the milk with the spoon tossed on the table next to it. For the on call doctor it was her eighteenth hour on shift and that had been her first meal during that time. To say she resented leaving it was an understatement, but she was also very professional as well.

The moment she heard it was a child she was to be assisting on any resentment evaporated. If anything later she'd feel guilty for it - who resented patients over a bowl of wheaty o's anyways?!

"Doctor Edelstein, Sophie's in Radiology with Taylor." One of the nurses at the nurse's station told her. Taking the chart from the desk she perused it while asking Kim what had happened. She knew she'd be assisting but she also wanted to know as much about the patient as possible. Anything could happen and she needed to be ready to step up, just in case. They had time, there was always time to do it right...

<Pre-op to Radiology>

Right on the verge of pulling out a few more of her greying hairs Anne turned about with a shrug of dismissal bound for where she had left Kim out in the Nurses station. The very instant her left foot hit the hallway her eyes fell on the one person she had totally forgotten about due to fact that since Carrie had been away, Anne found almost every second day she was behind in updating the staffing rosters. "God you're getting old woman." She bitterly reminded herself.

Anne intercepted the much taller woman half way between pre-op and radiology, cutting her off before she had ventured too far for her to catch. "Sarah." Anne's voice generally had the effect of bringing an entire squad to a halt. "Your timing is excellent lass, I suppose you saw my random paging messages pop up? I had no idea who to call since the very person I needed to ask was our patients mother, so as you can imagine that was my last resort. Honestly, I think I am quickly becoming far too old for this." Her head was shaking slowly from side to side, giving rise to her thoughts a while back that her self confidence was ebbing like the tide with her years.
